I don’t get it. Why is it that, more and more, parents insist on taking their young children to movies that they have no business seeing at hours of the night when they would be better served settling in for a bedtime story? Nearly every movie that I’ve seen in the last few months has featured the background noise of a screaming, crying young child, pretty much from the opening credits onward. Seriously folks? My last movie outing had to be the best (or worst, if we’re being literal) by far. No sooner had we settled in to watch the previews when a little girl – who couldn’t have been more than three or four years old mind you – began rocking back and forth in her chair, kicking the seat in front of her (you guessed it… mine) and whining about how she wanted to get ice cream, RIGHT NOW. This little performance continued for the next three hours. Seriously. At one point, I was startled by what I thought was something crawling on me. But no, it was the tiny hand of the child, attempting

to catapult herself over the seat next to me into my row. This was shortly followed by the pitter-patter of little feet running back and forth down the aisles, all the while singing at the top of her lungs. Now, don’t get me wrong. Children are adorable and cute and all that – just not at a 10:30 movie screening of a film that clearly only the parental units were interested in seeing. And the “adults” who I assume were with her for supervision seemed unfazed by it all, simply staring straight ahead at the screen, paying no mind to the dozens of dirty looks from those in the surrounding seats. The only admonishment was the occasional, “Now if you want ice cream, you better be good honey!” Good? Honey?! It was at this point that I looked around for a hidden camera, convinced I must have been a part of the latest episode of “What Would You Do?” or some other prank show. Because, truly, there was no way that two people could be that inconsiderate of an entire movie theater full of people, right? Apparently wrong. At a certain point, my exasper-

ation turned to anger, enough so that I turned around and snapped, “Are you kidding me right now? Ever heard of a babysitter?” That seemed to quiet things down momentarily, as the two women just stared blankly back and halfheartedly told the child to sit down and behave. That lasted for all of about 10 minutes. By the end of the three hours, in between straining to hear the dialogue and being jostled in my seat by the incessant kicking, the whole situation was so absurd that it had somehow become hysterically funny. After all, this had to be a joke. On the way to our cars, we had the good fortune to run into this same trio, this time with the child galloping through the parking lot whining about – you guessed it, ice cream. As I walked by them, I just couldn’t resist. “Wow, if this is her being good, I wouldn’t want to see it when she doesn’t behave! Glad she’s getting that ice cream – sugar should make the situation much better!” Once again, I was met with a pair of blank stares. Next time, get a babysitter. Seriously.

Luge Slider Search How do members of the U.S. National Luge Team get their start in the Fastest Sport On Ice?... through the Norton USA Luge Slider Search, which targets boys and girls ages 9 to 13. On Saturday and Sunday, September 15th16th, young athletes who want to experience the thrill of luge and train under the guidance of USA Luge national team coaches and athletes can do so when the Norton USA Luge Slider Search rolls into Farmingville in Suffolk County. The event will be held at Bald Hill Park near the Brookhaven Amphitheater. Clinics will take place each day from 9 a.m. to 12 noon, and 2 to 5 p.m. Participants can register for the one clinic of their choice on either day and all clinics are free. During a Norton USA Luge Slider Search clinic, USA Luge coaches and athletes teach youngsters the basics of riding a luge sled, including position, steering and stopping. Armed with the basics, the young athletes make several runs down a paved street on wheeled sleds. Finally, the youngsters measure their physical skills through a battery of fitness tests. Those who show the most promise at the clinics are invited to train in Lake Placid, N.Y. at the U.S. Olympic Training Center and will be considered for selection to the U.S. Junior Development Luge Team. The Search produced reigning women’s World

Champion Erin Hamlin along with eight members of the 2010 US Olympic Luge Team. The event is free and participants will also receive a USA-Luge Tshirt. For complete information and to register for the USA Luge Slider Search, call 1.800.USA LUGE ext 105 or visit www.usaluge.org. Long Island athletes on the current USA Luge National Team include brothers Matt and Joe Mortensen of Huntington Station and Junior National Team member Aidan Kelly of West Islip. USA Luge uses the Slider Search, now in its 27th season, as its primary means of athlete recruitment. U.S. Luge athletes have captured over 560 international medals since 1994. Included in that total are silver and bronze medals during the 1998 and 2002 Olympic Winter Games, 25 World Cup victories, four overall World Cup doubles crowns, 18 Junior World Championship titles and 12 Senior World Championship medals. Playing For Peace Despite periods of torrential rain, the 4th Annual Play for Peace Soccer Tournament took place last Saturday at the Patchogue-Medford Youth Soccer Complex on Sipp Avenue in Medford. Fourteen teams gathered on the fields in high spirits, practicing in the downpour as a way to kill time until the delayed opening ceremonies and the first game could begin. Within an hour, the rain abated enough for the three divisions to begin play. In the Unity Division were the four women’s teams; in the Peace Division were six men’s recreational teams; and in the Pride Division were four men’s competitive teams. Teams organized locally but also came from as far as Nassau County and beyond to participate. Each team was guaranteed three games at the end of which ‘Soccer Mafia’ sponsored by Bridgehampton National Bank won the women’s Unity Division; the Unathletics sponsored by AVOICE won in Division Peace, the men’s recreational division; and the Pita House sponsored

by the same won in Division Pride, the men’s competitive division. Sportsmanship awards went to team YMCA in the men’s recreational division; team Bellport Blasters in the men’s competitive division; and team Saved the Tourney in the women’s Unity division. “Despite lousy weather, we had a great tournament. So many of the players embraced the true goal of the day, to promote tolerance and acceptance of all cultures. And thanks to our generous sponsors, we will be able to make a sizeable contribution to the Patchogue-Medford Library for their numerous cultural awareness and assimilation programs,” said Leg. Calarco. “Gershow Recycling is pleased again to support this year’s “Play for Peace.” We salute former Legislator Eddington for establishing this event and Legislator Calarco for continuing it, as an effort to bring members of our diverse communities together and build understanding through

sports, ” said Kevin Gershowitz, President, Gershow Recycling. “Bridgehampton National Bank is proud to be part of this initiative to bring the Patchogue community together in friendship and support. As a community bank, we have seen how local people working together can make a difference, this tournament is a wonderful example of a successful partnership,” said Howard H Nolan, Chief Financial Officer, Bridgehampton National Bank. “We are happy to offer our support to Legislator Calarco and pleased to be a small part of the Play for Peace Soccer Tournament in an effort to help bring culturally diverse communities together supporting peace, unity and sportsmanship.” Rob Loscalzo, Chief Operating Officer, TRITEC Real Estate Company, Inc.

July 27th. “If we can ease the pain and worry in some small way, we are honored to do so - it is our privilege to help in any way we can,” stated Healthy Sundays Volunteer and St. Catherine’s Nurse Recruiter Sharon Cash. Healthy Sundays exemplifies the mission of Catholic Health Services (CHS) to care for those in need and is one of the system’s most prolific outreach efforts. Started in 2005, the Healthy Sundays program provides preventive health screenings and education to members of underserved communities

on Long Island. The Healthy Sundays program is designed to identify, control, treat and prevent medical conditions that are most prevalent in these communities, such as tuberculosis, obesity, diabetes, cholesterol and hypertension. The program aims to improve the underserved population’s quality of life, by decreasing morbidity and mortality. of Long Island’s premier courses, but it has also become so much more. Event Co-Chair, Jeffery Capazzi explained the appeal of R. Brinkley Smithers, “It is wonderful to be involved in organizing this event, especially when the need for proven drug and alcohol support is so evident and continues to escalate each year.” Prizes will be awarded in team and individual categories, and participants will have their chance to “Beat the Pro.” With a silent auction, live auction, and dozens of raffle prizes, everyone will feel like a winner, even if their scores are well over par. The live auction boasts playing opportunities at some of the country’s top courses, while the raffle features golf and vacation packages to the far-away destinations of Scotland and Southern California. “Rest assured this is not your run-of-the-mill golf tournament,” explained Executive Director Dr. Jeffrey Reynolds. “It is an opportunity to provide hope and healing to atrisk individuals and the families who support them.” The annual fundraiser offers several participation

and sponsorship opportunities. Tournament Sponsors will be featured in multimedia presentations at the tournament, receive sponsor level signage on the course, a pin flag/tee sign package and great exposure on our high traffic website. Each sponsorship package comes with playing opportunities at one of Long Island’s most popular charity golf tournaments. Not a golfer? Not to worry, tickets are available for the Diamonds in the Rough Dinner, to be held at 5:30 p.m. at The Creek. “R. Brinkley Smithers has earned a reputation as one of Long Island’s most popular charity golf tournaments- how fitting that it is dedicated to raising critical funds to address the area’s most prevalent problems,” remarked Event Co-Chair Michael Brennan. Foursomes and individual tickets are already on sale and expected to sell out before the event. Two weeks ago, the volunteers of St. Catherine’s Healthy Sundays Program were contacted to help a local family in need. After reading through a letter about a young man in his last days, suffering with ALS and unable to provide for his family, including four children, the volunteers initiated their mission to help in anyway they could. They started by running a week-long clothing and food drive throughout the medical center. The staff was eager to answer the call to help and a car full of donations were delivered to the family’s home on Friday,

Sparkles was all awiggle with anticipation. Her toys were packed and she was freshly groomed, her little heart pounded with love and joy...she was going home. The wonderful people at Massapequa Pet’s Vet who saved her life when her owner decided he’d rather go on vacation than pay for Sparkle’s surgery had told her about the wonderful loving couple who would come for her. The pain from her injuries and the heartbreak of being abandoned by the person 2. she loved was behind her now. Sparkles was more than willing to devote her whole being to her new owners and to allow her broken heart to heal. Little Shelter: As the hours went by, Sparkles would 631.368.8770 blink and snuff the air every time she heard DEMI footsteps. “Was it them? Would she be going young female Calico, home now?” Sparkles found it hard to wait. Domestic Short Hair At the end of the day, Sparkles finally heard FLO the footsteps coming to her cage - this was female Maltese it, her new people had arrived to take her home. But instead it was her old Massapequa Pet’s Vet friends. “We’re sorry, Sparkles girl, they’re not coming... They changed their minds.” They carefully unpacked her toys and gave her a hug; then they shut the lights and Sparkles was alone in the dark. She sighed as she circled her cage, and then she lay down on her bed with her head on her paws...waiting. Readers, I was told that the reason the wonderful couple did not come for Sparkles was because they were heartbroken. Their beloved Rottweiller had died, and the gentleman could not bring himself to open his heart to another dog. Everyone deals with loss differently. My poor heart has been broken so many times with the loss of a beloved pet. I understand the pain. For me, the only way I can cope is to open my heart and welcome another pet to help me heal. Without that special healing love, I would find the pain of loss very difficult to deal with. I would like to ask that couple to reconsider, to honor the memory of their dearly loved dog by allowing Sparkles to love them and help them heal. But meanwhile, Sparkles is still waiting. Please consider calling Massapequa Pet’s Vet at 516.797.8387 so you can meet Sparkles. Perhaps you’re the special loving person she’s been waiting for. I’m aching to write a happy ending to this story. Every living creature deserves to give love and be loved in return, don’t you agree?
