Record Crowds Expected The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) is pleased to announce its upcoming 32nd Annual R. Brinkley Smithers Golf Invitational. This landmark charity tournament will take place on Wednesday, September 19th, and participants will have their choice of teeing off at Piping Rock at noon, or
at The Creek at 12:30 p.m., both in Locust Valley. This year’s tournament will posthumously honor past Board Chair Michael Schaffield, whose leadership and dedication to LICADD supported the organization to meet its mission. Named for LICADD Founder, R. Brinkley Smithers, the tournament’s proceeds
ensure that the services LICADD provides - from screening, intervention and referral services, to recovery support, an Employee Assistance Program and mentoringall remain accessible to the individuals and families who are most affected by drug and alcohol abuse on Long Island. This high energy, fastpaced event offers a
challenging round on two of Long Island’s premier courses, but it has also become so much more. Event Co-Chair, Jeffery Capazzi explained the appeal of R. Night At The Movies By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I don’t get it. Why is it that, more and more, parents insist on taking their young children to movies that they have no business seeing at hours of the night when they would be better served settling in for a bedtime story? Nearly every movie that I’ve seen in the last few months has featured the background noise of a screaming, crying young child, pretty much from the opening credits onward. Seriously folks? My last movie outing had to be the best (or worst, if we’re being literal) by far. No sooner had we settled in to watch the previews when a little girl – who couldn’t have been more than three or four years old mind you – began rocking back and forth in her chair, kicking the seat in front of her (you guessed it… mine) and whining about how she wanted to get ice cream, RIGHT NOW. This little performance continued for the next three hours. Seriously. At one point, I was startled by what I thought was something crawling on me. But no, it was the tiny hand of the child, attempting

to catapult herself over the seat next to me into my row. This was shortly followed by the pitter-patter of little feet running back and forth down the aisles, all the while singing at the top of her lungs. Now, don’t get me wrong. Children are adorable and cute and all that – just not at a 10:30 movie screening of a film that clearly only the parental units were interested in seeing. And the “adults” who I assume were with her for supervision seemed unfazed by it all, simply staring straight ahead at the screen, paying no mind to the dozens of dirty looks from those in the surrounding seats. The only admonishment was the occasional, “Now if you want ice cream, you better be good honey!” Good? Honey?! It was at this point that I looked around for a hidden camera, convinced I must have been a part of the latest episode of “What Would You Do?” or some other prank show. Because, truly, there was no way that two people could be that inconsiderate of an entire movie theater full of people, right? Apparently wrong. At a certain point, my exasper-

ation turned to anger, enough so that I turned around and snapped, “Are you kidding me right now? Ever heard of a babysitter?” That seemed to quiet things down momentarily, as the two women just stared blankly back and halfheartedly told the child to sit down and behave. That lasted for all of about 10 minutes. By the end of the three hours, in between straining to hear the dialogue and being jostled in my seat by the incessant kicking, the whole situation was so absurd that it had somehow become hysterically funny. After all, this had to be a joke. On the way to our cars, we had the good fortune to run into this same trio, this time with the child galloping through the parking lot whining about – you guessed it, ice cream. As I walked by them, I just couldn’t resist. “Wow, if this is her being good, I wouldn’t want to see it when she doesn’t behave! Glad she’s getting that ice cream – sugar should make the situation much better!” Once again, I was met with a pair of blank stares. Next time, get a babysitter. Seriously.

Artistic Adventure talents.” The one thing summer academy students do not experience is ennui. The burgeoning artists work collaboratively, crossing over from program to program and applying their interests in new and innovative ways. Creative writing students, for example, work with musical theater students to develop original productions, giving writers time in the spotlight and performers a stint in the director’s chair. Musicians create original compositions for dance productions, to which dancers eventually perform. Young artists also have the opportunity to hone their craft on state-of-theart equipment, such as the audio lab where musicians can arrange their own cinematic scores to actual movie scenes, or the digital lab that allows young composers to create using leading-edge software. Students also get a taste of what professionals are currently doing, with trips to shows, museums and the like. The final week of the academy is a showcase of what the students have learned. The big finale includes a major art exhibit, the publication of a journal and an extravaganza of performances, from plays to cabarets.

More than 160 middle school students (grades 612) from 24 school districts across Nassau and Suffolk counties enjoyed an exceptional experience in the arts this July. The annual Summer Arts Academy at Nassau BOCES’ Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) pairs aspiring artists with distinguished professionals for a rare educational opportunity. LIHSA’s accomplished faculty is home to Emmywinners, film and televisions actors, published poets and playwrights, Broadway performers, master musicians and dozens of other successful artists. Choosing from coursework in the visual arts, dance, drama, musical theater, creative writing, instrumental music, vocals and digital media, students work with these professionals in their chosen interests for the entire four-week program. “The program opens up all sorts of educational opportunities that many of these students may not have experienced,” says Andrea Schubach, principal of the Summer Arts Academy. “It helps young artists to gain confidence in what they are doing and to try things they never have before, all while immersed in an environment that is supportive of their

Those who show the most promise at the clinics are invited to train in Lake Placid, N.Y. at the U.S. Olympic Training Center and will be considered for selection to the U.S. Junior Development Luge Team. Gene Kurzrok and John Levitt of AXA Equitable recently presented Nancy Mariano, Regional Director of Friends of Karen, with a check for $2,500 for their involvement in an AXA Day of Service, a national volunteer program in which AXA employees spend time and dedication helping not-for-profits in their communities. The day of service underscores AXA’s ongoing commitment to Friends of Karen, an organization that provides emotional, financial and advocacy support to families with a child

diagnosed with cancer or another life-threatening illness. “We are so grateful for the generosity, energy and commitment that AXA employees have shared with us,” said Mariano. “To be able to partner with Friends of Karen and spread our mission with others is such a special opportunity and benefits not only our families but our larger communities as well.” Friends of Karen, with offices in Port Jefferson, Manhattan and Westchester, New York, assisted 1,308 children with services in 2011
alone. Friends of Karen began in 1978 when family friends came to the aid of a couple and their 16-year old daughter, Karen, who was terminally ill. A fundraising campaign for medical and other costs enabled Karen to spend her precious last days at home surrounded by loving family and friends. Karen, and the mission of Friend of Karen, which is to provide financial, emotional and advocacy support to families of children with lifethreatening illnesses, has never been forgotten.

Astoria Federal Savings’ 13th Annual Kids Tools for School collection drive will take place throughout August to help prepare children for the start of the new school year. The program provides local students whose families struggle to afford school supplies with the muchneeded educational tools to excel and perform well in the classroom. Starting August 1st, the community is invited to participate by bringing their donations of new school supplies or cash to purchase supplies to any one of Astoria Federal Savings’ 85 branches in Nassau, Suffolk, Brooklyn, Queens and Westchester. COMMUNITY RELATIONS - On Wednesday, July 25th, Southside Hospital’s community relations team visited the Gerald Ryan Outreach Center at Our Lady of Miraculous Medal in Wyandanch. The community relations team was provided a tour of the facilities before distributing re-useable water bottles to the children of the summer camp. Southside Hospital also generously donated $1,000 to the program fund of the outreach center.
Healthy Sundays
In a July 26th meeting of the Board of Directors, Suffolk County Association of Municipal Employees President Daniel P. Farrell honored Suffolk County security guard James Sodergren for his recent heroism. Sodergren, accompanied by his family, was presented with a proclamation, praised by Farrell and received a standing ovation. Earlier in the week, Sodergren found and assisted a man who had attempted suicide at the South West Department of Social Services Center in Deer Park. Sodergren, who has been a Suffolk County security guard for more than 24 years, is one of the 30-plus security
guards County Executive Steve Bellone is trying to replace with outside contractors. “We are proud to have someone of Jim Sodergren’s experience and skill among our ranks,” said President Farrell. “He responded like he was trained to do and his quick, knowledgeable actions helped save a man’s life.” “We’ve argued from the start that public safety would be jeopardized by replacing our well-trained and seasoned security guards with low-bid contractors, and here’s your proof,” Farrell said. “They will never fill Jim’s post with anyone with his credentials, experience, training, and commitment
to serving and protecting the people of Suffolk County.” “I was notified that someone was bleeding in the men’s room and when I went in, I saw blood all over the floor,” Sodergren said. “I radioed another guard to call 911 and pried open the stall. It looked like he was trying to take his own life, but I wasn’t going to let that happen,” said the security guard, who is also a 36-year fireman and commissioner with the Central Islip Fire Department. Sodergren was also named the first AME "Member of the Month," a new feature started by union leadership.

Successful Outing
Two weeks ago, the volunteers of St. Catherine’s Healthy Sundays Program were contacted to help a local family in need. After reading through a letter about a young man in his last days, suffering with ALS and unable to provide for his family, including four children, the volunteers initiated their mission to help in anyway they could. They started by running a week-long clothing and food drive throughout the medical center. The staff was eager to answer the call to help and a car full of donations were delivered to the family’s home on Friday,
July 27th. “If we can ease the pain and worry in some small way, we are honored to do so - it is our privilege to help in any way we can,” stated Healthy Sundays Volunteer and St. Catherine’s Nurse Recruiter Sharon Cash. Healthy Sundays exemplifies the mission of Catholic Health Services (CHS) to care for those in need and is one of the system’s most prolific outreach efforts. Started in 2005, the Healthy Sundays program provides preventive health screenings and education to members of underserved communities
on Long Island. The Healthy Sundays program is designed to identify, control, treat and prevent medical conditions that are most prevalent in these communities, such as tuberculosis, obesity, diabetes, cholesterol and hypertension. The program aims to improve the underserved population’s quality of life, by decreasing morbidity and mortality. Brisman of Neurological Surgery, P.C., the largest private neurosurgery practice on Long Island and in the New York
Tristate area, which has been a sustaining sponsor of the Golf Classic, and has provided generous ongoing support for all of The Friends major fundraising events for many years. Proceeds from this event will support Mercy's Level III Neonatal
Intensive Care Unit (NICU), the only such facility on the south shore of Nassau County. Volunteers Needed Sunday, September 23rd at Lido Beach. “Life’s not over after a spinal cord injury,” says Joe Testaverde, who lost the use of his legs and has limited use of his hands after a backyard diving accident and in whose honor the Testaverde Fund was established. “With the help of volunteers, these paralyzed athletes will get out of their wheelchairs and prepare for the most exhilarating ride of their lives. It’s about getting out and riding a wave. It’s about enjoying life and not letting a disability cripple you.” Wheels 2 Water, a project of the not-for-
profit Testaverde Fund for Spinal Cord Injury, provides specially equipped surfboards with handles and leg bumpers. Two wheelchairs with dune buggy tires transport the athletes from the boardwalk across the sand to the sea and each participant wears a special life vest with attached scuba tanks for safety. The goal of Wheels2Water is to help provide physically disabled individuals with the opportunity to enjoy the recreational and therapeutic benefits of water sports in order to improve their overall quality of life and health.

I don’t believe that I would be where I am today without learning what I did as part of the school’s theater department and Camerata performing group,” stated 2004 alumna Sara Morabito, who is currently a freelance actor. Sparkles was all awiggle with anticipation. Her toys were packed and she was freshly groomed, her little heart pounded with love and joy...she was going home. The wonderful people at Massapequa Pet’s Vet who saved her life when her owner decided he’d rather go on vacation than pay for Sparkle’s surgery had told her about the wonderful loving couple who would come for her. The pain from her injuries and the heartbreak of being abandoned by the person 2. she loved was behind her now. Sparkles was more than willing to devote her whole being to her new owners and to allow her broken heart to heal. Little Shelter: As the hours went by, Sparkles would 631.368.8770 blink and snuff the air every time she heard DEMI footsteps. “Was it them? Would she be going young female Calico, home now?” Sparkles found it hard to wait. Domestic Short Hair At the end of the day, Sparkles finally heard FLO the footsteps coming to her cage - this was female Maltese it, her new people had arrived to take her home. But instead it was her old Massapequa Pet’s Vet friends. “We’re sorry, Sparkles girl, they’re not coming... They changed their minds.” They carefully unpacked her toys and gave her a hug; then they shut the lights and Sparkles was alone in the dark. She sighed as she circled her cage, and then she lay down on her bed with her head on her paws...waiting. Readers, I was told that the reason the wonderful couple did not come for Sparkles was because they were heartbroken. Their beloved Rottweiller had died, and the gentleman could not bring himself to open his heart to another dog. Everyone deals with loss differently. My poor heart has been broken so many times with the loss of a beloved pet. I understand the pain. For me, the only way I can cope is to open my heart and welcome another pet to help me heal. Without that special healing love, I would find the pain of loss very difficult to deal with. I would like to ask that couple to reconsider, to honor the memory of their dearly loved dog by allowing Sparkles to love them and help them heal. But meanwhile, Sparkles is still waiting.
