They say you are only as old as you feel, and I feel fairly young. And, if you ask any lotto seller or movie theatre employee, apparently I look even younger than the accepted 17/18 years of age permitted to purchase scratch-offs or see an Rated-R movie unaccompanied by a guardian. Pretty laughable, if you ask me. But supposedly I should take all these perceived insults as compliments, savor them for as long as I can… blah, blah. I’ll try to remember that the next time I’m rummaging

through my wallet for ID. I think the best affirmation of this fact, though, was a recent statement by my niece, all of six years old, as she remarked incredulously, “You’re 29?! You look like a teenager! You’re not even tall enough to be that old!” And that was that, as far as she was concerned. Simple logic, simple conclusion. I have to say, I kinda liked it. If only we could all adopt a little of that attitude. So, yes, my 20’s may be “almost” over. My 30’s may be just beyond that faint, yet fastapproaching, horizon. But my future… well, that’s not nearly determined and done. And that’s the only thing that counts.

“Enjoying Gardening” physical activity, a good warm up is essential for preparing your body for the task ahead. Start gradually by walking briskly around your garden. This will allow you to assess what needs to be done while helping raise your pulse and body temperature.

Roll your shoulders and arms backwards, gently rotate your trunk and pelvis, and squat down to the ground while keeping your back straight. Repeat these motions for a few minutes before you start digging holes and pulling weeds.

Never lift anything by simply bending over. Instead, let your leg muscles do most of the work. Grip the object while squatting, and then lift by raising your entire body, keeping your weight over your legs. Only rake and dig for brief periods of time. Take frequent rest breaks and mix up your gardening chores so that you do not overtire one part of your body.

Resident Graduation A group of 31 residents at Island Nursing and Rehab Center - age 61-96 recently graduated from Suffolk County Community College’s Faculty Association Community Outreach Program. This was the third year in a row that the program has taken place, this year featuring Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Shaun L. McKay and Assemblyman Dean Murray as the speakers, along with Daniel Linker, Assistant Professor of English and the College’s Program Chair and Coordinator of the Faculty Association Professors on Wheels program. Through the Professors On Wheels program, Suffolk County Community College professors donate their time to come to the nursing home to speak to

the residents on a variety of educational topics. The graduation ceremony was held for residents who attended the complete series of classes over the course of the year. Residents were adorned in caps and gowns, receiving their graduation certificate with family member, fellow residents and college professors in attendance. Additional speakers included David Fridkin, Administrator/CEO of Island Nursing and Rehab Center, along with the facility’s Director of Therapeutic Recreation, Lorrie Prescott, who coordinated the program at Island Nursing. Mr. Fridkin stated, “This program is so wonderful because our residents never want to stop learning. They very much appreciated the content of the lectures and are grateful that they are

recognized as intelligent adults who still have a quest for knowledge.” This year’s educational topics in the series included Senior Fitness, Sports, Fashion, and the Liberation of American Women 1860-1940; Psychology and Memory; Caring for the Caregiver, Guided Imagery; Travel to Iceland; The History of Veteran’s Day, and more. Learning on large screen televisions and computers, the residents were exposed to the latest technology.

Senator Owen H. Johnson recently joined with Assemblyman Phil Boyle in presenting a New York State Legislative Resolution to Master, The Worshipful Edward T. Bartels, commemorating the 125th Anniversary of the Babylon Lodge No. 793, Free and Accepted Masons. An official celebration took place with a Black Tie Dinner Dance on April 29, 2012 at the Babylon Lodge in Babylon. The Free and Accepted Masons are the oldest fraternal organization in the world dating back some 3,000 years. The Babylon Lodge has continuously been a great influence in the community by providing leadership, a principled way of life deeply rooted in a system of values, social benevolence, emphasis on individual excellence and serving as a stabilizing force in the community.

The history of Masonry in the Village of Babylon has prevailed unbroken for 125 years and is deeply rooted in the American Revolutionary era. From its introduction in 1887 to the present day, Freemasonry has been an important influence at work in the development of the Babylon community. The members of the Babylon Lodge No. 793 are dedicated to supporting their community. Each year they host a Holiday Party for the AHRC in Bohemia and buy gifts for over 120 special-needs children. They also donate food baskets to local churches to help feed the needy, host blood drives, donate their building and time to different organizations such as the Babylon Arts Council, the Babylon Historical Society, and the Babylon Beautification Society. Recently, Babylon

Once upon a time, Richard H. Johnston became a funeral director, married Irene Happ, and moved to the village of Lindenhurst from New York City. Then came World War II, and he was drafted into the U.S. Navy where he worked as a funeral director at the Brooklyn Navy Yard Morgue. In 1958, Richard H. and Irene Johnston opened the funeral home. They moved above the funeral home with their three children to be readily available to families at any hour. About ten years later, Richard H. and Irene retired to Florida, and their son, Richard, who was now home from service in the U.S. Air Force in Germany during the Vietnam War, took over the business. Final Dates Set

The August dates (and final for this year) for the series of FREE organic gardening classes held by the Town of Babylon Farmer’s Market Project have been set for August 13th, 20th and 27th. All dates are on Mondays. Classes are scheduled to start at 7 p.m. and will last till 9 p.m. each evening. The topics will generally cover organic gardening principles for growing vegetables. These classes are available free of charge to all Town of Babylon residents. The overall instructions will cover

such topics as soil preparation, crop selection, crop scheduling, crop rotation, plant spacing, inter planting, companion planting, growing from seeds, growing from starter plants, growing in pots, succession planting, as well as many other topics relevant to this time of year and this phase of the planting and growing season. Perhaps the most important topic for this time of year is how to “winterize” your garden and prepare it for next spring’s growing season.

Reference material will be disseminated to all participants. The location for the classes is at the Fellowship Hall facilities of the Christ Covenant Church at 67 Scudder Avenue in Copiague.
