Almost Over? By: Jamie Lynn Ryan

Summer is not almost over. It’s half over, in terms of school vacation time. It’s one third over, in terms of actual seasonal equinox time. And it’s not nearly over, in terms of my time. And that’s all I have to say about that. On to bigger and more important things, such as the fact that today, August 1st, heralds the start of my birthday month. Not a day, not a week, but an entire month of drawn out celebration. Why? Because I want to. Perhaps it will make my little mini-milestone slightly less traumatic. Everyone has those “special” birthdays that make him

or her cringe ever so slightly. The transition from fun-loving teenager to responsible twenty-something, the age of AARP eligibility, the BIG -- …insert an age of your choice. They say you are only as old as you feel, and I feel fairly young. And, if you ask any lotto seller or movie theatre employee, apparently I look even younger than the accepted 17/18 years of age permitted to purchase scratch-offs or see an Rated-R movie unaccompanied by a guardian. Pretty laughable, if you ask me. But supposedly I should take all these perceived insults as compliments, savor them for as long as I can… blah, blah. I’ll try to remember that the next time I’m rummaging

through my wallet for ID. I think the best affirmation of this fact, though, was a recent statement by my niece, all of six years old, as she remarked incredulously, “You’re 29?! You look like a teenager! You’re not even tall enough to be that old!” And that was that, as far as she was concerned. Simple logic, simple conclusion. I have to say, I kinda liked it. If only we could all adopt a little of that attitude. So, yes, my 20’s may be “almost” over. My 30’s may be just beyond that faint, yet fastapproaching, horizon. But my future… well, that’s not nearly determined and done. And that’s the only thing that counts.

School Supplies Sought

During the month of August, United Way of Long Island is inviting companies to collect school supplies on behalf of children in underserved school districts. The supplies will be donated to local districts as part of United Way’s 4th Annual Stuff-A-Bus Campaign. Last year, tens of thousands of school supply items on behalf of children in the underserved school districts of Copiague, Central Islip and Brentwood. Buses were donated by both Educational Bus Transportation Inc., and Suffolk Transportation Service, Inc. Five hundred

backpacks and name tags were donated by the Make It Count Foundation and United Way also secured a $10,000 grant from the Target Foundation. Long Island companies are asked to collect the following school supply items: backpacks, lunch boxes, notebooks, pocket folders, pens, pencils, washable markers, pencil cases, crayons, glue/glue sticks, scissors, rulers and hand wipes. Items will be collected at individual companies and at United Way of Long Island’s office in Deer Park from August 1st to August 31st. According to the Long Island Index 2011, “while overall poverty levels on

Long Island are lower than New York at large, there are many schools where more than 50 percent of the children receive free lunch.” Hardworking families struggle to pay necessary bills and many are unable to afford school supplies for their children. As part of United Way’s focus on education initiatives, the Stuff-A-Bus campaign aims to help students from these families to prepare for school and succeed academically. For more information or to get involved, visit www.unitedwayli.org or call 631.940.3731.

Survivors Offering Assistance in Recovery (SOAR) Program. “Survivor’s Offering Assistance in Recovery is offered by The Phoenix Society for Burn Survivors, as a program to provide training to burn survivors or their family members who want to volunteer to help others whose lived have been touched by a burn injury,” stated Ms. Pakes. “The NUMC hospital-based program is intended to help burn survivors and their families cope with and overcome the difficult challenges they encounter following a burn injury. It makes it easier for burn centers to work with volunteers in providing peer support to patients as peer support assists individuals in adapting to burn injury through sharing similar experiences.”

According to information provided by the Phoenix Society for Burn Survivors, “Many people who successfully recover from a burn injury find purpose and meaning by helping others make the transition from burn victim to burn survivor. Those who recover successfully have learned a lot through trial and error and hope to make the road easier for others. The SOAR training program empowers volunteers with information and skills needed to provide appropriate forms of support.” The Nassau County Firefighter’s Burn Center at NUMC treats approximately 200 burn patients per year in the burn center and over 1000 patients in their outpatient treatment center.

Smartphone Safety: What You Need To Know ( N A P S I ) — Smartphones make life so much more convenient, but if they are lost or stolen, your personal information may be exposed. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to protect your information. Here are a few tips from CTIA—the international w i r e l e s s telecommunications association: Take steps to prevent theft. Before a phone is lost or stolen, protect your information by using passcodes and applications. Passcodes—Use a passcode to make it harder for a thief to access your smartphone if it is lost or stolen. Apps—Use apps that can track or locate a lost or stolen smartphone. Some apps may also enable you to remotely

wipe a device or emit a loud alarm. If your device is lost or stolen, contact your wireless provider immediately to suspend your service. CTIA and its members always want America’s wireless users to be safe. Together with the Federal Communications Commission and major city police chiefs, CTIA and participating wireless companies have agreed to take steps to help protect consumers and their private information on smartphones. Paramount to preventing smartphone thefts is educating consumers about the tools and features that carriers, device manufacturers and app creators already offer. By using these passcodes and apps, consumers can protect themselves and

their personal information on their wireless devices. In addition, participating carriers have agreed to implement and deploy databases to prevent thieves from reactivating stolen smartphones in the U.S. and, when appropriate, internationally. By using a smartphone’s unique identifying number, wireless providers will help prevent smartphones that are reported by their customers as stolen from being activated and/or provided service on their own networks. The U.S. wireless industry has always been dedicated to advancing public safety and enhancing the security and protection of its customers. For more information, visit www.ctia.org.

The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) is excited to announce its newest program: SHINE (Siblings Helping to Identify Needs of Each other). When the program kicks off in midAugust, SHINE will be the first of its kind on Long Island to offer siblingfocused, rather than traditional parentfocused, support interventions. Designed for individuals between the ages of 10-21 with a brother or sister with a substance use problem, SHINE will offer an overview of the disease of addiction, as well as an opportunity to interact and receive support from group members facing similar difficulties. Participants will learn to recognize how their sibling’s addiction may be affecting them and their families, and how to protect their own health. “It is about empowerment.” LICADD’s Student Assistance Program (SAP) Coordinator, Lisa Ganz, LMSW, explained the idea behind SHINE, “all too often, siblings become

stuck in the shadow of their brother or sister’s substance abuse. This program is focused on bringing them into the spotlight and allowing them to be heard.” “I have met far too many students who have voiced concern for a brother or sister who is a substance user,” Clinical Director Steve Chassman, LCSW, stated, “and now those individuals will have access to a safe environment where they can feel supported.” LICADD currently offers Too Good for Drugs, an evidence-based drug and alcohol prevention program for K-12 grade students. For teens and young adults, Start2Stop is a weekly support group for individuals who have some drug and/or alcohol use, but may not yet be ready to seek treatment or live a substance-free life. The group is also perfect for those who are awaiting placement into inpatient or outpatient chemical dependency treatment. For young people who may be abusing drugs and alcohol, Teen Intervene provides an opportunity for them to recognize the

negative effect their habits may be having on themselves, their health, and their relationships with their friends and family, while seeking effective and personalized treatment options. “We have known for a long time that the disease of addiction negatively affects more than just the addict; it leaves family members feeling distraught, powerless, and also more likely to become addicted themselves.” LICADD Executive Director Jeffrey L. Reynolds, Ph.D., CEAP, SAP, continued, “SHINE will seek to end this cycle and create a supportive community for young people that might otherwise feel isolated by a sibling’s addiction.” If you are between the ages of 10 and 21, and have a brother or sister who is struggling with alcohol or drug addiction, SHINE is here for you. Please contact Lisa Ganz, LMSW, at lganz@licadd.org or at 516.747.2606 for more information about meeting times and locations.

Operation LIVE UNITED

Cut Energy Cost (NAPSI)—Warmer weather can be a terrific time for homeowners to undertake projects to spruce up their house or landscape. When the AC bills shoot up, it’s also a time many look for ways to increase their home’s energy efficiency. Fortunately, saving energy doesn’t have to mean sacrificing comfort. There are a number of simple ways to conserve energy and save money in the long run: Ideas To Try • Check furnace or air conditioner filters each month. If the filter looks dirty, change it. A dirty filter makes it harder for

air to circulate, causing it to work harder to produce clean air. • Close vents in empty rooms to heat or cool only the rooms you use. • Replace lightbulbs with compact fluorescent lightbulbs. • Find and seal leaks around doors and windows. • Install heat-rejecting window film. This additional way to save on energy is often overlooked. A leading manufacturer of window films, 3M, offers several varieties that can help reduce energy costs and glare, as well as block UV rays. Lightly tinted films

are available that are designed to reject heat but not change the appearance of windows. Moderately tinted varieties block a greater amount of light from coming in the windows, while still providing clear views. Additionally, a film specially made for night vision can give homeowners extra privacy and heat rejection during the day while allowing easier viewing outside at night. Learn More For further information on window films, homeowners can visit www.3M.com/windowfilm s.

BREAST CANCER GALA - Breast Cancer Help, Inc. celebrated 20 years of the Long Island Breast Cancer Mapping Project at its 17th Annual Gala at the Island Hills Country Club in Sayville on June 29, 2012. President Lorraine Pace awarded Senator Owen H. Johnson a Certificate of Appreciation for his efforts and support of the Breast Cancer Mapping Project. The project began in West Islip in 1992 and created a scientific evaluation of a survey created to map the incidence of breast cancer. This mapping project aids in determining the causes of breast cancer and has since spread across the nation and also to other countries such as England, Australia and Japan.

More than $90,000 was raised during United Way of Long Island’s Operation LIVE UNITED event in support of Long Island’s military families. On Flag Day, June 14th, thousands of Long Islanders proudly wore an Operation LIVE UNITED tee shirt to salute the men and women who fight for our freedom, and their families. Proceeds from Operation LIVE UNITED will benefit United Way’s Military Family Assistance Project, which partners with local nonprofit organizations, to provide emergency financial aid, case management and job training/employment assistance to military personnel who have served in Iraq or Afghanistan. Bethpage Federal Credit Union - Operation LIVE UNITED’s Admiral Sponsor, raising more than $75,000 since 2010 kicked off the effort by offering tee shirts at its Jones Beach Air Show during Memorial Day Weekend.

New York has the most consecutive National Guard activations in the country since September 11, 2001. Military personnel are forced to leave their families behind, overwhelmed by fewer resources and myriad other personal stresses. When discharged, they return home faced with physical, emotional and financial struggles as they transition back into civilian employment. United Way’s Military Family Assistance Project helps address the emergency needs of local military personnel and their families living through multiple deployments. Partner agencies include Clubhouse of Suffolk/SC United Veterans, Family Service League, Hope for the Warriors, Mental Health Association of Nassau County, Transitional Services of New York for Long Island and United Veterans Beacon House. More than 90

companies participated in Operation LIVE UNITED this year and included: National Grid, Suffolk Transportation Services, Inc., Eastern Suffolk BOCES, Travelers, Teachers Federal Credit Union, Garfunkel Wild, P.C., RWDSU Local 338, Newsday, and many more. For a complete list of p a r t i c i p a t i n g organizations, visit www.unitedwayli.org/liveu nited. The Operation LIVE UNITED shirt signifies a cohesive effort to better our community by reaching out a hand to those who fight for our freedom. The uniformity of this movement across Long Island sends a message of people coming together, living united, to make a difference and inspire hope. To see event photos or to find out more about how your company can run an Operation LIVE UNITED campaign in honor of Veteran’s Day, v i s i t www.unitedwayli.org/liveu nited.

(NAPSI)—Parents of young children need to be better educated in order to avoid making potentially dangerous safety mistakes when they are on the go. The Problem Automobile crashes remain a leading cause of death for children and it’s important that parents consistently and correctly use the appropriate car seat to keep their child passengers safe. Shortcut: “I’m picking up several kids after soccer practice and I’m going to put my 8-year-old daughter in the front seat so all the children can fit into the car.” Reminder: All children under age 13 are safest when riding in the backseat and properly restrained in a car seat, booster seat or seat belt. distracted driving, www.distraction.gov, cites multiple statistics on the dangers of this careless behavior: • Using a mobile phone while driving, whether it’s handheld or hands-free, delays a driver’s reactions as much as having a blood alcohol concentration at the legal limit of .08 percent. • Driving while using a mobile phone reduces the amount of brain activity associated with driving by 37 percent. • Drivers who use handheld devices are four times as likely to get into crashes serious enough to injure themselves as those who don’t. • An estimated 11 percent of drivers are talking on cell phones while driving at any point during the day. The Steps 1. Impress upon teens the need to not text or talk on the phone while driving by not doing so yourself. Beyond providing an example of responsible behavior, this creates a safer driving environment. 2. Explain to your teens the seriousness of the situation and let them know that it is important to have a plan in order to avoid temptation. For example, have them always keep their cell phone off while driving or

(NAPSI)—There are steps parents and others can take to drive down the dreadful rate of traffic injuries and fatalities. An estimated 6,000 people are killed and 500,000 people are injured annually because someone was texting, e-mailing or talking on a mobile phone while driving. The Facts Dr. Joel Haber, a clinical psychologist and LG Text Ed council member, explains that for teens, texting and driving is an even bigger problem than it is for adults. First, kids text more. Texting is their preferred mode of communication. According to a recent LG Text Ed survey conducted by LG Mobile phones, while half of all teens admit to texting while driving, only 4 percent of parents are aware of this. Second, teens are inherently novices when it comes to driving. They especially need to focus on the road to compensate for any lack of driving skill or experience. Third, teens can literally be driven to distraction. If a teen is caught up in a dramatic or tense texting conversation, it could be too enticing to focus on the phone instead of the road.
