The Babylon Citizens Council on the Arts’ 23rd Annual Judged Art Show was held at Old Town Hall in Babylon Village on June 15th and 16th. It was an exciting show, and the evening reception on June 15th was well attended by artists and friends. BACCA Board President Shawn Cullinane, along with Town of Babylon Town Council members Anthony Martinez, Lindsay Henry and Thomas Donnelly, presented awards to the winners. Trust me, we all need one, if for no other reason than to reinvigorate ourselves, to find that motivation to make all those longput-off changes…and to find that elusive sense of fulfillment and happiness we are all continually in search of. Sure, a clean slate can start on any day, at any point in time that we see fit. But there is just something about a brand new birthday year that just goes with a brand new you, isn’t there? Of course, this doesn’t mean I am necessarily overjoyed to turn 30, mind you. There is

still something… icky about that number for me, something less-than-appealing about rolling over that hill, so to speak. Just like there are those who would rather remain teenagers forever, or 21, or 49, or whatever the case may be – I’m content to be “Forever 29” for the foreseeable future – at least at heart. So here’s to the last (official) day of being 20-something. And here’s to tomorrow, and the next day, and every day after that. May they each bring new and exciting milestones much bigger than a mere number on a birthday cake.

Long Island Cruizin’ For A Cure is an annual antique and classic car show started seven years ago by prostate cancer survivor, Sandy Kane to raise awareness of the disease and spread the word about the importance of early detection. Attendees at the event are invited to take advantage of free prostate cancer screenings provided on site by North Shore LIJ Health System volunteers. The event is organized entirely by volunteers. All profits go to support prostate cancer research and to encourage screenings. Stony Brook University announced that the Motorola Solutions Foundation, the charitable arm of Motorola Solutions, Inc., has once again funded the Long Island STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & M a t h e m a t i c s ) Collaborative with a $100,000 grant as part of their Innovation Generation National Partnership program. Through the grant, the STEM Collaborative will provide resources and facilitators for the creation of four STEM Tech clubs and the continuation of the successful TechPREP program. This past year the grant served more than 300 students from high-needs school districts. STEM clubs are located at the Brentwood Freshman Center in Brentwood, William Floyd Middle School in Moriches, Harrison Hale Community Educational

Resource Center in Middle Island and the Girl Scouts of Suffolk County headquarters in Commack. STEM Tech will run throughout the 2012-2013 academic year with students preparing service learning projects culminating with a conference where they will present projects addressing some of the regional environmental issues currently affecting Long Island. In addition to STEM Tech, the grant provides for a fifth year of support for the TechPREP program beginning in March 2013. TechPREP is a multi-track program that introduces technology fields to girls in sixth through eighth grades. It provides 90 hours of educational and experiential learning for middle school girls in the areas of computer science, mathematics, physics and engineering. “This grant will allow TechPREP and STEM Tech to continue developing

opportunities for students to learn about science, technology, engineering and mathematics while meeting a variety of role models from the community, industry and the university,” said Carrie-Ann Miller, Director of Stony Brook’s Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) and Co-Director of STEM Tech and TechPREP. “Students learn first-hand about innovation, project development and the potential they have to impact the future.” Paul Siegel, an Adjunct Lecturer and STEM Smart administrator in the Department of Technology and Society at Stony Brook and Co-Director of STEM Tech and TechPREP, observed that the support from Motorola Solutions also provides a way for Stony Brook University and the Long Island business community to spread some of their intellectual capital and entrepreneurial acumen

Cremation is not the final disposition of the deceased. The Church plainly states cremated remains should be buried in a grave or entombed in a mausoleum or columbarium. The practice of scattering cremated remains on the sea - from the air or on the ground or keeping cremated remains in the home of a relative or friend of the deceased are not the reverent disposition that church requires. Paella perfect for last summer soiree When autumn is on the horizon and temperatures are about to take a turn for the colder, many families prefer to enjoy one last fiesta outdoors before calling it quits on the outdoor entertaining season. The following recipe for "Vegetable Paella" from Deb Roussou's "350 Best Vegan Recipes" (Robert Rose) makes a great dinner on the deck with family and friends.

Vegetable Paella

As I’ve said many times, the first step to having a No Kill Shelter is to get rid of the shelter directors who believe that adoptable animals have to be killed to control the shelter population. I’m currently gathering data on those Long Island Shelters with the highest rate of killing, and I’ll report my findings to you in an upcoming column. Meanwhile, please remember that no shelter employee has the right to come to your home and demand that you turn your pet over to them without a court order, even if your dog has bitten someone. They must have a court order issued by a judge. Just because they are wearing a uniform and hold the title of animal control officer, they are NOT law officers.
