assau County Legislator Joseph Belesi recently joined together with Town of Oyster Bay Councilman Anthony Macagnone to attend the Over The Hill Gang Softball League’s Annual Fundraiser honoring this year’s beneficiary, Jimmy Ossenfort. The event was hosted at Ellsworth Allen Park in Farmingdale. Jimmy was being a friend, serving as designated driver and seeing his friends safely home, when he had a tragic, terrible accident. Long Island Cruizin’ For A Cure is an annual antique and classic car show started seven years ago by prostate cancer survivor, Sandy Kane to raise awareness of the disease and spread the word about the importance of early detection. Attendees at the event are invited to take advantage of free prostate cancer screenings provided on site by North Shore LIJ Health System volunteers. The event is organized entirely by volunteers. All profits go to support prostate cancer research and to encourage screenings. CSHL cancer scientists Lloyd Trotman and Jim Hicks receive a $10,000 donation from Sandy Kane, chair of Long Island Cruizin’ For A Cure, for their collaboration on a research program that aims to advance the effectiveness of prostate cancer diagnoses and treatment. Of the 250,000 American men who will be diagnosed

Finding a way to distinguish between this small cohort and the majority of patients who will develop non-lethal prostate cancer is a key focus of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) scientists Lloyd Trotman and Jim Hicks. The team, in collaboration with clinical scientists at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, studies the evolution of human prostate cancer using highly faithful, patient-specific prostate cancer mouse models. The team has shown that deletion of certain phosphatase genes could be a marker for advanced disease. Additionally, the team is working toward devising a diagnostic tool based on single cell sequencing so that cancer cells with metastatic potential can be identified and treated with a tailored cocktail of drugs that halt or

Forever 29 By: Jamie Lynn Ryan It’s here. The last day of my 20’s. The beginning of the next stage of life, that magical, as yet unknown frontier known as my 30’s. What will this next decade bring? Normally, a birthday is just another year. A flip of the daily calendar. No real difference. But this year, it seems different. This year, I find myself using my milestone as a benchmark, as an evaluation of where my life has taken me thus far and where I want to take it from this point forward. Is it what I expected? No, not at all. Is that a bad thing? Nope, not necessarily. Since when did anything go according to plan?
Birthdays are exciting to me, in that they signify a great opportunity for a fresh start, even if you didn’t think you needed one. Trust me, we all need one, if for no other reason than to reinvigorate ourselves, to find that motivation to make all those longput-off changes…and to find that elusive sense of fulfillment and happiness we are all continually in search of. Sure, a clean slate can start on any day, at any point in time that we see fit. But there is just something about a brand new birthday year that just goes with a brand new you, isn’t there? Of course, this doesn’t mean I am necessarily overjoyed to turn 30, mind you. There is

still something… icky about that number for me, something less-than-appealing about rolling over that hill, so to speak. Just like there are those who would rather remain teenagers forever, or 21, or 49, or whatever the case may be – I’m content to be “Forever 29” for the foreseeable future – at least at heart. So here’s to the last (official) day of being 20-something. And here’s to tomorrow, and the next day, and every day after that. May they each bring new and exciting milestones much bigger than a mere number on a birthday cake.

W.C. Mepham High School will be celebrating its 75th Anniversary! It was September 1937 when Mepham’s doors first opened. Come celebrate not just a beautiful building, but the long line of students and faculty who provided the basis for many personal memories. After 75 years, the lovely library with its Greek-style wooden columns and friezes showed wear and tear. The W.C. Mepham Alumni Association is proud to have provided funds (thanks to the generous alumni) for p r o f e s s i o n a l preservationists to restore the columns, shelving and other wood surfaces. Saturday, September 8th: Kicking off the celebrations will be the All Class Pirates’ Picnic Reunion, held at Wantagh State Park (Merrick Road, next to Wantagh Pkwy ramp – once you are in the Park, look for the Alumni banner), from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Charcoal and ice are supplied – you bring the food (no hard
liquor). Celebrate the start of Mepham’s 75th Anniversary! Sunday, September 9th: Starting at 1 p.m., a program in the auditorium including musical selections, stories about some programs and innovations taking place now at Mepham; recognition of some original alumni and Who’s Who honorees along with a chance to see the fullyrestored giant map of Long Island (funded by the W.C. Alumni Association) as well as the resident pirate who now makes his home in the library, standing guard over all the resources. Tours of the school will be led by student guides.
See the changes that have taken place, and what is still there. Light refreshments will be served in the gym. NOTE: The following week will be School Spirit Week, concluding with the Homecoming Parade on Saturday, September 15th at 11:30 a.m. (beginning at the Bellmore RR Station and ending at Mepham, football game (Mepham v. Kennedy) starting at 1:30 p.m., followed by activities and rides for all on the field. Come and show your Mepham pride! your family a "world view" of a different culture, according to host dad Tim McMahon, whose family has hosted five AYA students. “The result is that my children have made friends and traveled around the globe,” McMahon said. “My children have visited several of our students on their own and have made extremely close and personal friendships. In fact, our entire family has visited the families of two of our exchange students and developed close friendships between the families.” There are several key elements to the hosting experience. For five or 10 months, host families must provide their student with two meals a day and a place to sleep and study. Most importantly, they must welcome their student
into their home as if they were a son or daughter. To help facilitate the exchange experience, host families will receive full support from an AYA Local Coordinator located in their community. AYA is a not-for-profit organization designated by the U.S. Department of State to offer J-1 visas to international students. AYA is sponsored by the American Institute For Foreign Study Foundation, which was founded with the assistance of the late Robert F. Kennedy. To learn more about hosting an exchange student with AYA, call Stella at 800.322.4678, extension 5164 or e-mail aya.info@aifs.org. Visit AYA on the web at www.academicyear.org.

Hillary Rutter, the director of the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program, recently announced that her program will be a recipient in the 11th annual Panera Bread 2012 Pink Ribbon Bagels campaign. The Pink Ribbon Bagel campaign, to date, has raised well over $100,000 to benefit Long Island breast cancer organizations. In addition to the Adelphi Breast Cancer Program, Pink Ribbon Campaign funds will be donated to Prevention Is the Cure and the Breast Cancer
Pink Ribbon Support Research Program at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. Panera Bread, in partnership with WALK 97.5 who is getting the word out, will donate 25 cents for every Pink Ribbon Bagel sold in its 22 Long Island bakery-cafes. “The initiative continues to grow each year,” says Greg George, Vice President of Operations for Doherty Enterprises, Inc., franchisee for Panera Bread. “WALK 97.5 makes a big push in the fall to educate and inform listeners about breast cancer prevention, screening and treatment.” He adds, “WALK Radio
brings awareness and Panera brings the funds to help sustain critical groups here on Long Island.” To give the fundraising a healthy head start, Panera is kicking off its campaign with POWER OF PINK DAY on Monday, October 1st, more than quadrupling its donation by contributing 100% from each bagel sold to the fund. George urges businesses, organizations and individuals to call their local Panera bakery now to reserve Pink Ribbon Bagels for October 1st. According to George, every Pink Ribbon Bagel
HEALTH FIRST - The Elmont Public Library recently hosted the HealthFirst Art Contest - Semifinalists. Every year, HealthFirst sponsors an art contest for the surrounding communities’ children. Hundreds of local schools’ students participate. The final winner will be announced at the Elmont Health Center on Saturday, August 11th. The Elmont Family Health center staff was available to meet with the contestants and their parents and answer any health questions that they might have.
or baker’s dozen of 13 Pink Ribbon Bagels sold that day or preordered for pickup on October 1st will provide a 100% donation to the designated breast cancer organizations. On POWER OF PINK DAY, Panera will contribute $1.25 for each bagel, $9.99 for each baker’s dozen. For those who have yet to taste a Pink Ribbon Bagel, it’s a Cherry Vanilla Bagel - a brown-sugar sweetened, wholesome cranberry-cherry chip bagel - that is shaped into iconic “pink ribbons” as a symbol of hope in support of local breast cancer help organizations. WALK 97.5’s Linda
Healy, herself a breast cancer survivor, spearheads the radio station’s breast cancer advocacy efforts and reminds us that POWER OF PINK DAY provides the perfect excuse to plan a bagel party at work or with friends on October 1st. Throughout the remainder of October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, each Long Island bakery-cafe will continue to contribute by donating 25 cents from every Pink Ribbon Bagel sold as well as $1.00 from each and every Power of Pink Baker’s Dozen - any assortment of 13 bagels -
that is sold that month. Last year, in partnership with WALK 97.5, Panera Bread’s Pink Ribbon Bagel campaign raised more than $26,000 over the course of the month-long campaign, including $10,000 on kick-off day. This year, the Long Island Panera Bread bakery-cafes are hoping to do even better - and they are counting on individuals and groups to make that happen. Anyone who is worried about breast cancer should call the Adelphi Breast Cancer Hotline for help at 800.877.8077. You are not alone.

PET’S PLACE BY SHARON HUBBARD - Sharonadoptpet@aol.com • avoiceforanimals.org
On a happier, lighter note, both The Little Shelter and Forgotten Friends will be hosting great events next week:
Dear Readers, Nathan Winograd, who heads up the No Kill Nation movement, states the following: How did Allegany County, MD go from an 85% kill rate to a 94% save rate? They did it with a highly effective, three step process: 1. Stop the killing. 2. Stop the killing. 3. Stop the killing. They also got rid of their regressive director, embraced the community and have focused on adoptions. How did Austin, TX go from killing an animal every 12 minutes to a 92% save rate? The same way. How did Marquette, MI go from a 64% rate of killing to a 93% save rate? The same. The number of No Kill communities is increasing rapidly. And, for those who defend killing based on the myth of pet overpopulation, the jig is up.
FOR MORE INFORMATION CALL: 631-226-2636 - WWW.THENEIGHBORNEWSPAPERS.COM
As I’ve said many times, the first step to having a No Kill Shelter is to get rid of the shelter directors who believe that adoptable animals have to be killed to control the shelter population. I’m currently gathering data on those Long Island Shelters with the highest rate of killing, and I’ll report my findings to you in an upcoming column. Meanwhile, please remember that no shelter employee has the right to come to your home and demand that you turn your pet over to them without a court order, even if your dog has bitten someone. They must have a court order issued by a judge. Just because they are wearing a uniform and hold the title of animal control officer, they are NOT law officers. They’re just regular shelter employees wearing a uniform. Save-A-Pet: 631.473.6333
