Forever 29 By: Jamie Lynn Ryan It’s here. The last day of my 20’s. The beginning of the next stage of life, that magical, as yet unknown frontier known as my 30’s. What will this next decade bring? Normally, a birthday is just another year. A flip of the daily calendar. No real difference. But this year, it seems different. This year, I find myself using my milestone as a benchmark, as an evaluation of where my life has taken me thus far and where I want to take it from this point forward. Is it what I expected? No, not at all. Is that a bad thing? Nope, not necessarily. Since when did anything go according to plan?

jlynn@theneighbornewspapers.com www.facebook.com/instepwithjamie Birthdays are exciting to me, in that they signify a great opportunity for a fresh start, even if you didn’t think you needed one. Trust me, we all need one, if for no other reason than to reinvigorate ourselves, to find that motivation to make all those longput-off changes…and to find that elusive sense of fulfillment and happiness we are all continually in search of. Sure, a clean slate can start on any day, at any point in time that we see fit. But there is just something about a brand new birthday year that just goes with a brand new you, isn’t there? Of course, this doesn’t mean I am necessarily overjoyed to turn 30, mind you. There is

still something… icky about that number for me, something less-than-appealing about rolling over that hill, so to speak. Just like there are those who would rather remain teenagers forever, or 21, or 49, or whatever the case may be – I’m content to be “Forever 29” for the foreseeable future – at least at heart. So here’s to the last (official) day of being 20-something. And here’s to tomorrow, and the next day, and every day after that. May they each bring new and exciting milestones much bigger than a mere number on a birthday cake.

To be continued next week, on the flip side of 30…

www.buytfc.com, and LICADD will receive $112.50 per ticket each time a participant enters the code 2IRON at checkout. “This is an incredible opportunity to raise unlimited funds for the participating charity and there are absolutely no costs to the organization,” said The Barclays Executive Director Peter Mele. “Fans will get to witness the very best the PGA TOUR has to offer and generate revenue for charities in New York and New Jersey during a time when these organizations need our help more than ever. We’d like to invite charities throughout the area to join us in enhancing and enriching our local communities by participating in TICKETS Fore CHARITY.” Long Island is currently in the midst of a public health epidemic, as our communities are devastated by the senseless loss of life as a result of heroin overdoses,

drunk-driving fatalities, and prescription drug abuse. Participants who purchase tickets with the code 2IRON can enjoy the Playoffs knowing that proceeds of their ticket cost are directly supporting LICADD’s many education, prevention and support programs for children and families struggling with alcohol and drug addiction, that work to end this cycle. With offices in Mineola, Ronkonkoma and Riverhead, LICADD offers an extensive array of programming and services, including screenings, brief interventions, referrals to treatment and relapse prevention services to individuals and families impacted by substance abuse. The agency also conducts evidence-based prevention programs, community outreach initiatives, runs a mentoring program for children of incarcerated parents, and advocates for

responsible public policy related to addiction. To purchase tickets to The Barclays, please visit www.buytfc.com and enter 2IRON in the promotional code field. For more information about how you can support LICADD and its life-saving programs, please call 516.747.2606 or visit www.licadd.org today.

According to the state’s new APPR mandate, districts that do not have approved plans in place by January 17th, 2013 could possibly face the loss of financial aid increases totaling millions of dollars. The APPR submission deadline was originally set in place so that the Department of Education would have ample time to review the performance review plans and to send back any individual district modifications. Board Vice President Peter Porazzo informed the district’s trustees that the state Department of Education

The Levittown School District has met the state mandated deadline for submission of its Annual P r o f e s s i o n a l Performance Review (APPR) plan to evaluate teachers and administrators. On Long Island, only 65 districts out of 128, or 51 percent, forwarded plans to the State Department of Education by the July 2nd, 2012 deadline. The Department of Education also reported that only 23 percent of districts statewide, or 164 out of 715 districts, submitted evaluation plans on time. Levittown Board of Education President Michael Pappas stated that the district should be proud of its ability to construct a plan and work out agreements with the various constituents. “The district’s ability to successfully negotiate agreements between the

Fifty high school students from Westbury and Hempstead today celebrated their completion of Project GRAD Long Island’s Summer Institute at Hofstra University at a ceremony held on Hofstra’s campus. The students’ summer college experience culminated in the presentation of their Public Service Announcements (PSA) focused on the Institute’s theme, “STEMulating Sustainability,” allowing them to offer their perspectives on improving and sustaining the natural resources in our environment. The students were joined at the closing ceremony by program educators and supporters: Dr. Herman Berliner, Hofstra University Provost & Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs; Sybil Mimy-Johnson, Executive Director of Project GRAD Long Island; and Professor Bentley Whitfield, Farmingdale State College. Project GRAD Long Island’s Summer Institute at Hofstra University was supported by Bethpage Federal Credit Union, National Grid Foundation, New York Community Bank Foundation, Farmingdale State College and Hofstra University. This year’s Institute required four hours of instructional time each day on Hofstra University’s campus focused on environmental studies, biology, and film

documentary. During the four-week program, students – all rising 9th and 10th graders from Westbury and Hempstead High Schools – worked in teams with their instructors to create PSAs. “We are so pleased to see the smiles on our students’ faces as they present their PSA projects that they’ve worked so hard on for the past four weeks. They should be proud of what they’ve accomplished, and for their efforts to prepare themselves for higher education,” said Sybil Mimy Johnson, Executive Director, Project GRAD Long Island. “Over the past couple of years, we’ve seen the positive effects that our program has on students in their exams and graduation rates. We look forward to seeing great success from these students in the future.” “The National Grid Foundation is pleased to provide support for the Project GRAD Long Island Summer Institute which introduces students to the college environment - and gives them the confidence that a college degree is an attainable goal,” said Bob Keller, President, National Grid Foundation. “Bethpage is proud to support Project GRAD Long Island to help students in low income Long Island communities realize the importance of getting a college education,” said Kirk Kordelski, President and CEO, Bethpage Federal Credit Union. “By

participating in the summer institute, these 50 students will undoubtedly be more prepared and ready for their successful academic careers.” Project GRAD Long Island is a non-profit organization whose mission is to provide quality education to e c o n o m i c a l l y d i s a d v a n t a g e d communities so that high school graduation rates increase and students are prepared to enter and succeed in college. The Summer Institutes are a key element of the GRAD program because they allow students to experience a college campus, working with college facility and mentors and utilizing the resources available to them at Hofstra University. Project GRAD Long Island graduates have earned scholarships to institutions such as Penn State College Park, Long Island University – C.W. Post, NY Institute of Technology, Adelphi University, SUNY Stony Brook and Hofstra University, among others. In Project GRAD’s original cluster of schools, it has increased the number of high school graduates by 94%, raised the number of students going to college by 400%, and generated a college completion rate 70% above the national average. Cruizin For A Cure

Long Island Cruizin’ For A Cure is an annual antique and classic car show started seven years ago by prostate cancer survivor, Sandy Kane to raise awareness of the disease and spread the word about the importance of early detection. Attendees at the event are invited to take advantage of free prostate cancer screenings provided on site by North Shore LIJ Health System volunteers. The event is organized entirely by

volunteers. All profits go to support prostate cancer research and to encourage screenings. CSHL cancer scientists Lloyd Trotman and Jim Hicks receive a $10,000 donation from Sandy Kane, chair of Long Island Cruizin’ For A Cure, for their collaboration on a research program that aims to advance the effectiveness of prostate cancer diagnoses and treatment. Of the 250,000 American men who will

be diagnosed with prostate cancer this year, about 1% will develop lethal, metastatic disease. Finding a way to distinguish between this small cohort and the majority of patients who will develop non-lethal prostate cancer is a key focus of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) scientists Lloyd Trotman and Jim Hicks. The team, in collaboration with clinical scientists at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center,

studies the evolution of human prostate cancer using highly faithful, patient-specific prostate cancer mouse models. The team has shown that deletion of certain phosphatase genes could be a marker for advanced disease. Additionally, the team is working toward devising a diagnostic tool based on single cell sequencing so that cancer cells with metastatic potential can be identified and treated with a tailored cocktail of

drugs that halt or prevent lethal spread of the disease. This year’s Cruizin’ For A Cure will be held on Sunday, September 9th, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Sears Automotive Center on Routes 106/107 in Hicksville (LIE exit 41 South; Northern State exit 35 South). The show, Long Island’s largest, will feature hot rods, custom cars, muscle and classic cars as well as specialty vehicles, motorcycles and antique fire apparatus.

The show is geared toward family entertainment with food, vendor booths, an afternoon doo-wop concert and a “Kids Fun Zone” including a radio controlled model racecar track and fingerprint ID program. For more information about Long Island Cruizin’ For A Cure, contact Sandy Kane at info@licruizinforacure.c om, 888.LICRUIZ (542.7849) or visit www.licruizinforacure.co m

Nathan Winograd, who heads up the No Kill Nation movement, states the following: How did Allegany County, MD go from an 85% kill rate to a 94% save rate? They did it with a highly effective, three step process: 1. Stop the killing. 2. Stop the killing. 3. Stop the killing. They also got rid of their regressive director, embraced the community and have focused on adoptions. How did Austin, TX go from killing an animal every 12 minutes to a 92% save rate? The same way. How did Marquette, MI go from a 64% rate of killing to a 93% save rate? The same. The number of No Kill communities is increasing rapidly. And, for those who defend killing based on the myth of pet overpopulation, the jig is up. As I’ve said many times, the first step to having a No Kill Shelter is to get rid of the shelter directors who believe that adoptable animals have to be killed to control the shelter population. I’m currently gathering data on those Long Island Shelters with the highest rate of killing, and I’ll report my findings to you in an upcoming column. Meanwhile, please remember that no shelter employee has the right to come to your home and demand that you turn your pet over to them without a court order, even if your dog has bitten someone. They must have a court order issued by a judge. Just because they are wearing a uniform and hold the title of animal control officer, they are NOT law officers. They’re just regular shelter employees wearing a uniform. Save-A-Pet: 631.473.6333
