In an effort to optimize nutrition and promote healthy lifestyles, the Massapequa School District joins those across the country in serving up a new and improved lunch menu to its students this year. The revised menu, available in all cafeterias throughout the district, offers a broader variety of healthful meal options that align with the U. S. Department of Agriculture’s first revamp of school nutrition standards in 15 years. Advocated by first lady Michelle Obama, the new menu standards were made official with the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 and were unveiled last January by President Barack Obama and Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack. They include additional offerings of both fruits and vegetables on a daily basis, whole-grain foods, fat-free flavored or low-fat unflavored milk, limited calorie requirements based on the age of children being served, and reduced amounts of saturated fats and sodium.
To introduce the new menu, the district’s elementary school cafeterias are offering the “five star meal” program. Elementary students can become “stars” of good nutrition by choosing food options available in the “five star meal.” Each star represents a different part of the new food plate, which includes protein, grains, vegetables, fruits and dairy. Students will select foods from three stars, one of which must be from the vegetable or fruit category, and reap the benefits of eating a wholesome, nutritionpacked meal. “Massapequa School District has been ahead of the curve when it comes to nutrition,” said Kathie Martin, assistant school lunch director. Over the past five years we’ve been increasing the number of fruits, vegetable and legumes on the menu and, for a long time, we’ve only offered 100 percent fruit juice. We are hopeful that parents will share our enthusiasm in providing even more nutritious meal options for their children

and will support this important initiative to teach healthy eating habits.” Students will still be able to purchase lunch at the same low price of $2.25 at the elementary level and $2.50 at the secondary level. To keep costs down, the district is a longtime member of the Long Island School Nutrition Director’s Association, a bidding cooperative of 45 school districts that secures more competitive prices on food and supplies through large volume bidding. Additional savings will come from the new legislation, which reimburses school districts that meet the meal standards 6 cents per lunch served. The lunch menu is posted on the district website at www.msd.k12.ny.us. For more information on the new food plate or the national standards for school meals, visit www.myplate.gov or www.fns.usda.gov/cga.

You may be asked to supply a waiver if your photo is selected. “The Town of Oyster Bay is a photographer’s dream, and the remaining summer and start of fall will provide countless opportunities to take beautiful pictures,” Councilman Macagnone said. “In addition to our many parks and beaches, the Town of Oyster Bay boasts a wealth of historic sites, museums and other places of interest that could be the subject of a great photo. So, whether photography is your passion, your hobby, or just an occasional pastime, grab your camera, go outside and start snapping.”

It’s summertime, with all its possibilities, including countless opportunities to take great photos, according to Oyster Bay Town Councilman Anthony D. Macagnone. If you have a photo taken in any season, you are invited to submit it for consideration for use in a Town publication. “Just flip through the pages of the 2012 Town Calendar and Summer Program to view some of the many great photos submitted by our residents,” Councilman Macagnone said. “I encourage everyone to start taking pictures, or go through photos you’ve already taken, depicting the people, places, community events and scenery throughout the Town of Oyster Bay for use in upcoming Town publications.” The Councilman went on to say that photos must

It’s here. The last day of my 20’s. The beginning of the next stage of life, that magical, as yet unknown frontier known as my 30’s. What will this next decade bring? Normally, a birthday is just another year. A flip of the daily calendar. No real difference. But this year, it seems different. This year, I find myself using my milestone as a benchmark, as an evaluation of where my life has taken me thus far and where I want to take it from this point forward. Is it what I expected? No, not at all. Is that a bad thing? Nope, not necessarily. Since when did anything go according to plan?
Birthdays are exciting to me, in that they signify a great opportunity for a fresh start, even if you didn’t think you needed one. Trust me, we all need one, if for no other reason than to reinvigorate ourselves, to find that motivation to make all those longput-off changes…and to find that elusive sense of fulfillment and happiness we are all continually in search of. Sure, a clean slate can start on any day, at any point in time that we see fit. But there is just something about a brand new birthday year that just goes with a brand new you, isn’t there? Of course, this doesn’t mean I am necessarily overjoyed to turn 30, mind you. There is
still something… icky about that number for me, something less-than-appealing about rolling over that hill, so to speak. Just like there are those who would rather remain teenagers forever, or 21, or 49, or whatever the case may be – I’m content to be “Forever 29” for the foreseeable future – at least at heart. So here’s to the last (official) day of being 20-something. And here’s to tomorrow, and the next day, and every day after that. May they each bring new and exciting milestones much bigger than a mere number on a birthday cake.
To be continued next week, on the flip side of 30…

Locks Of Love
Amanda was born with a rare form of Cerebral Palsy, causing her to have to walk with leg braces. Six months ago, she was at religion class, where her teacher, Ms. Grandma, came in wearing a hat. She then told the kids she has cancer and had lost her hair due to the treatments for it. Amanda is 12 now and knows all too well about
cancer from the many times she spent in the hospital where she was with children who had cancer. She has lost her Nana, Pop and Grinka (Grandpa) to cancer over the course of two years. Ms. Grandma commented, “Oh Amanda, I wish I had hair like you.” Amanda replied, “Okay, I will donate it in your name for whoever needs it.” She said, “I may not be able to do a lot of things that other kids do, but I sure can grow my hair!” She is an amazing girl, often helping out other kids who have more disabilities than her. She sings and plays baseball on a Challenger team in Massapequa Park. Her dad coaches and her sister buddies with other special needs kids. Amanda is an inspiration to everyone she meets!

Panera Bread, in partnership with WALK 97.5 who is getting the word out, will donate 25 cents for every Pink Ribbon Bagel sold in its 22 Long Island bakery-cafes. “The initiative continues to grow each year,” says Greg George, Vice President of Operations for Doherty Enterprises, Inc., franchisee for Panera Bread. “WALK 97.5 makes a big push in the fall to educate and inform listeners about breast cancer prevention, screening and treatment.” He adds, “WALK Radio brings awareness and Panera brings the funds to
help sustain critical groups here on Long Island.” To give the fundraising a healthy head start, Panera is kicking off its campaign with POWER OF PINK DAY on Monday, October 1st, more than quadrupling its donation by contributing 100% from each bagel sold to the fund. George urges businesses, organizations and individuals to call their local Panera bakery now to reserve Pink Ribbon Bagels for October 1st. According to George, every Pink Ribbon Bagel or baker’s dozen of 13 Pink Ribbon Bagels sold that day or preordered for pickup on October 1st will provide a 100% donation to the designated breast cancer organizations. After two to three years of other dance studios, I can truly say I’m honored to select a dance studio that looks upon expression of feminine innocence through dance. It warms my heart and opens my mind to the beauty that is within us all! With a tearful joy of appreciationthank you!”

Long Island Cruizin’ For A Cure is an annual antique and classic car show started seven years ago by prostate cancer survivor, Sandy Kane to raise awareness of the disease and spread the word about the importance of early detection. Attendees at the event are invited to take advantage of free prostate cancer screenings provided on site by North Shore LIJ Health System volunteers. The event is organized entirely by volunteers. All profits go to support prostate cancer research and to encourage screenings. CSHL cancer scientists Lloyd Trotman and Jim Hicks receive a $10,000 donation from Sandy Kane, chair of Long Island Cruizin’ For A Cure, for their collaboration on a research program that aims to advance the effectiveness of prostate cancer diagnoses and treatment. Of the 250,000 American men who will be
diagnosed with prostate cancer this year, about 1% will develop lethal, metastatic disease. Finding a way to distinguish between this small cohort and the majority of patients who will develop non-lethal prostate cancer is a key focus of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) scientists Lloyd Trotman and Jim Hicks. The team, in collaboration with clinical scientists at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, studies the evolution of human prostate cancer using highly faithful, patientspecific prostate cancer mouse models. The team has shown that deletion of certain phosphatase genes could be a marker for advanced disease. Additionally, the team is working toward devising a diagnostic tool based on single cell sequencing so that cancer cells with metastatic potential can be identified and treated with a tailored cocktail of

The event will be preceded by a youth clinic featuring players and coaches from C.W. PET’S PLACE BY SHARON HUBBARD - Sharonadoptpet@aol.com • avoiceforanimals.org
On a happier, lighter note, both The Little Shelter and Forgotten Friends will be hosting great events next week:
Dear Readers, Nathan Winograd, who heads up the No Kill Nation movement, states the following: How did Allegany County, MD go from an 85% kill rate to a 94% save rate? They did it with a highly effective, three step process: 1. Stop the killing. 2. Stop the killing. 3. Stop the killing. They also got rid of their regressive director, embraced the community and have focused on adoptions. How did Austin, TX go from killing an animal every 12 minutes to a 92% save rate? The same way. How did Marquette, MI go from a 64% rate of killing to a 93% save rate? The same. The number of No Kill communities is increasing rapidly. And, for those who defend killing based on the myth of pet overpopulation, the jig is up.
FOR MORE INFORMATION CALL: 631-226-2636 - WWW.THENEIGHBORNEWSPAPERS.COM
As I’ve said many times, the first step to having a No Kill Shelter is to get rid of the shelter directors who believe that adoptable animals have to be killed to control the shelter population. I’m currently gathering data on those Long Island Shelters with the highest rate of killing, and I’ll report my findings to you in an upcoming column. Meanwhile, please remember that no shelter employee has the right to come to your home and demand that you turn your pet over to them without a court order, even if your dog has bitten someone. They must have a court order issued by a judge. Just because they are wearing a uniform and hold the title of animal control officer, they are NOT law officers. They’re just regular shelter employees wearing a uniform. Save-A-Pet: 631.473.6333
