At midnight the building will complete its journey across the Caroll and Henrietta Swezey Medical Pavillion, down West Avenue to the southeast corner of the county court property, a temporary location. The goal is to place the library on the northwest corner of the court property. The process to pry the building from its foundation, place it on girders and then wheels is

In committing to move this library rather than tear it down, in finding a new use for it we are preserving the cultural history of Patchogue Village,” said Legislator Calarco.

Stony Brook University announced that the Motorola Solutions Foundation, the charitable arm of Motorola Solutions, Inc., has once again funded the Long Island STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & M a t h e m a t i c s ) Collaborative with a $100,000 grant as part of their Innovation Generation National Partnership program. Through the grant, the STEM Collaborative will provide resources and facilitators for the creation of four STEM Tech clubs and the continuation of the successful TechPREP program. This past year the grant served more than 300 students from high-needs school districts. STEM clubs are located at the Brentwood Freshman Center in Brentwood, William Floyd Middle School in Moriches, Harrison Hale Community Educational Resource Center in Middle Island and the Girl Scouts of Suffolk County headquarters in Commack. STEM Tech will run throughout the 2012-2013 academic year with students preparing service learning projects culminating with a conference where they will present projects addressing some of the regional environmental issues currently affecting Long Island. In addition to STEM Tech, the grant provides for a fifth year of support for the TechPREP program beginning in March 2013. TechPREP is a multi-track program that introduces technology fields to girls in sixth through eighth grades. It provides 90 hours of educational and experiential learning for middle school girls in the areas of computer science, mathematics, physics and engineering. “This grant will allow TechPREP and STEM Tech to continue developing opportunities for students to learn about science, technology, engineering

Suffolk County Legislator John M. Kennedy, Jr. and the Nesconset Chamber of Commerce completed their 2012 Free Summer Concert Series Tuesday night with Full House rocking the final show this season. This year the Series featured musical acts such as Songs In The Attic, Rocket Man, Liverpool Shuffle and That 70’s Band, who kicked off this year’s wonderful series. In addition, Legislator Kennedy had the honor and privilege of recognizing several Hometown Heroes who are wonderful role models for our young people and our entire community. Concert Series Success

By: Jamie Lynn Ryan It’s here. The last day of my 20’s. The beginning of the next stage of life, that magical, as yet unknown frontier known as my 30’s. What will this next decade bring? Normally, a birthday is just another year. A flip of the daily calendar. No real difference. But this year, it seems different. This year, I find myself using my milestone as a benchmark, as an evaluation of where my life has taken me thus far and where I want to take it from this point forward. Is it what I expected? No, not at all. Is that a bad thing? Nope, not necessarily. Since when did anything go according to plan?

Christopher Mustakas, who was on leave from a tour in Afghanistan, was honored for his dedicated service to this Country as a member of the United States Marine Corps. While Corporal Kurt Kusterbeck, also of the United States Marine Corps was honored for his service as a Marine Airborne Specialist and a Combat Lifesaver. All three of these Hometown Heroes are role models that our entire community are proud to and honored to have as neighbors. Furthermore, Legislator Kennedy, in conjunction with Long Island Cares, was able to raise a recordsettiing $718 and 801 pounds of food for the Harry Chapin Food Bank, for stocking local food pantries, through the generosity of the entire community. In addition, the community and local businesses raised over $2,500 to help send Maria

Michta’s family to London to cheer her on as she goes for the gold. This year, the Concert Series provided a forum for local community groups to spread the word regarding their services and operations such as credit unions and green power. Legislator Kennedy would like to thank all those who helped make the Concert Series the success it was this year. The series could not have been the safe family event it was without Ron Schneider and his men and women from the Auxiliary Police and the Nesconset Fire Department. Of course, the Concert Series could not have been the phenomenal event it was week after week without the tireless effort of the Nesconset Chamber of Commerce led by Gina Coletti, Norma Dispenza and Jim Delahanty.

Trust me, we all need one, if for no other reason than to reinvigorate ourselves, to find that motivation to make all those longput-off changes…and to find that elusive sense of fulfillment and happiness we are all continually in search of. Sure, a clean slate can start on any day, at any point in time that we see fit. But there is just something about a brand new birthday year that just goes with a brand new you, isn’t there? Of course, this doesn’t mean I am necessarily overjoyed to turn 30, mind you. There is

still something… icky about that number for me, something less-than-appealing about rolling over that hill, so to speak. Just like there are those who would rather remain teenagers forever, or 21, or 49, or whatever the case may be – I’m content to be “Forever 29” for the foreseeable future – at least at heart. So here’s to the last (official) day of being 20-something. And here’s to tomorrow, and the next day, and every day after that. May they each bring new and exciting milestones much bigger than a mere number on a birthday cake.

With a focus on promoting reading and literacy, the New York Knicks and Cablevision’s Power To Learn today brought the Knicks Read to Achieve @powertolearn.com 2012 Summer Reading Program, presented by Kia Motors (Official Vehicle of the New York Knicks), to the Longwood Public Library. Participating in the event were Brookhaven Town Supervisor Mark Lesko and former NBA superstar John Starks. After welcoming remarks, Cablevision officials spoke about the program and thanked Kia Motors for their involvement. Brookhaven Town Supervisor Lesko and former Knicks superstar John Starks then discussed the importance of literacy with regard to achieving one’s goals in life. They also read aloud from the popular book, Cam Jansen and the Basketball Mystery by David A. Adler. Following the reading, the children took part in a fun “Knicks Postcard Club” quiz about the book and participated in raffles and autograph signings. “Cablevision, the New York Knicks and Kia Motors have done a terrific job in helping to promote literacy by bringing this innovative summer reading program to the children in our community,” said Brookhaven Town Supervisor Lesko. “Research has shown that children who read during the summer months entered the school year with a positive attitude

Long Island Cruizin’ For A Cure is an annual antique and classic car show started seven years ago by prostate cancer survivor, Sandy Kane to raise awareness of the disease and spread the word about the importance of early detection. Attendees at the event are invited to take advantage of free prostate cancer screenings provided on site by North Shore LIJ Health System volunteers. The event is organized entirely by volunteers. All profits go to support prostate cancer research and to encourage screenings. The following recipe for "Vegetable Paella" from Deb Roussou's "350 Best Vegan Recipes" (Robert Rose) makes a great dinner on the deck with family and friends.

Vegetable Paella

Nathan Winograd, who heads up the No Kill Nation movement, states the following: How did Allegany County, MD go from an 85% kill rate to a 94% save rate? They did it with a highly effective, three step process: 1. Stop the killing. 2. Stop the killing. 3. Stop the killing. They also got rid of their regressive director, embraced the community and have focused on adoptions. How did Austin, TX go from killing an animal every 12 minutes to a 92% save rate? The same way. How did Marquette, MI go from a 64% rate of killing to a 93% save rate? The same. The number of No Kill communities is increasing rapidly. And, for those who defend killing based on the myth of pet overpopulation, the jig is up. As I’ve said many times, the first step to having a No Kill Shelter is to get rid of the shelter directors who believe that adoptable animals have to be killed to control the shelter population. I’m currently gathering data on those Long Island Shelters with the highest rate of killing, and I’ll report my findings to you in an upcoming column. Meanwhile, please remember that no shelter employee has the right to come to your home and demand that you turn your pet over to them without a court order, even if your dog has bitten someone. They must have a court order issued by a judge. Just because they are wearing a uniform and hold the title of animal control officer, they are NOT law officers.
