At midnight the building will complete its journey across the Caroll and Henrietta Swezey Medical Pavillion, down West Avenue to the southeast corner of the county court property, a temporary location. The goal is to place the library on the northwest corner of the court property. The process to pry the building from its foundation, place it on girders and then wheels is

a finely tuned operation long perfected by Wolfe House & Building Movers from Bernville, PA. “This has been a long time in coming and a project that takes Patchogue back to its roots. In committing to move this library rather than tear it down, in finding a new use for it we are preserving the cultural history of Patchogue Village,” said Legislator Calarco.

and mathematics while meeting a variety of role models from the community, industry and the university,” said Carrie-Ann Miller, Director of Stony Brook’s Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) and Co-Director of STEM Tech and TechPREP. “Students learn first-hand about innovation, project development and the potential they have to impact the future.” Paul Siegel, an Adjunct Lecturer and STEM Smart administrator in the Department of Technology and Society at Stony Brook and Co-Director of STEM Tech and TechPREP, observed that the support from Motorola Solutions also provides a way for Stony Brook University and the Long Island business community to spread some of their intellectual capital and entrepreneurial acumen into areas of need. Members of the STEM Collaborative include: Stony Brook University’s Department of Technology & Society, Stony Brook’s Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) program, Stony Brook’s Science and Technology Entry Program (STEP), Girl Scouts of Suffolk County, the Long Island Regional Service Learning Network and ConnectToTech, a consortium of industry representatives. The Motorola Solutions Foundation's Innovation Generation program is designed to inspire students to learn about science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). Innovation Generation funding equips students with the skills essential to both their lives today and their future success through funding, employee volunteers and intragrantee collaboration. This year, the program will provide $4.9 million in grants to 87 organizations, including STEM Tech and TechPREP, to support hands-on, innovative after-school programs,

Stony Brook University announced that the Motorola Solutions Foundation, the charitable arm of Motorola Solutions, Inc., has once again funded the Long Island STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & M a t h e m a t i c s ) Collaborative with a $100,000 grant as part of their Innovation Generation National Partnership program. Through the grant, the STEM Collaborative will provide resources and facilitators for the creation of four STEM Tech clubs and the continuation of the successful TechPREP program. This past year the grant served more than 300 students from high-needs school districts. STEM clubs are located at the Brentwood Freshman Center in Brentwood, William Floyd Middle School in Moriches, Harrison Hale Community Educational Resource Center in Middle Island and the Girl Scouts of Suffolk County headquarters in Commack. STEM Tech will run throughout the 2012-2013 academic year with students preparing service learning projects culminating with a conference where they will present projects addressing some of the regional environmental issues currently affecting Long Island. In addition to STEM Tech, the grant provides for a fifth year of support for the TechPREP program beginning in March 2013. TechPREP is a multi-track program that introduces technology fields to girls in sixth through eighth grades. It provides 90 hours of educational and experiential learning for middle school girls in the areas of computer science, mathematics, physics and engineering. “This grant will allow TechPREP and STEM Tech to continue developing opportunities for students to learn about science, technology, engineering

Suffolk County Legislator John M. Kennedy, Jr. and the Nesconset Chamber of Commerce completed their 2012 Free Summer Concert Series Tuesday night with Full House rocking the final show this season. This year the Series featured musical acts such as Songs In The Attic, Rocket Man, Liverpool Shuffle and That 70’s Band, who kicked off this year’s wonderful series. In addition, Legislator Kennedy had the honor and privilege of recognizing several Hometown Heroes who are wonderful role models for our young people and our entire community. We held a Send-Off Rally for Maria Michta, our Olympian, who is currently in London preparing to compete in the 20K Race Walk as part of the American Olympic team. Lance Corporal

Concert Series Success

By: Jamie Lynn Ryan It’s here. The last day of my 20’s. The beginning of the next stage of life, that magical, as yet unknown frontier known as my 30’s. What will this next decade bring? Normally, a birthday is just another year. A flip of the daily calendar. No real difference. But this year, it seems different. This year, I find myself using my milestone as a benchmark, as an evaluation of where my life has taken me thus far and where I want to take it from this point forward. Is it what I expected? No, not at all. Is that a bad thing? Nope, not necessarily. Since when did anything go according to plan?

Christopher Mustakas, who was on leave from a tour in Afghanistan, was honored for his dedicated service to this Country as a member of the United States Marine Corps. While Corporal Kurt Kusterbeck, also of the United States Marine Corps was honored for his service as a Marine Airborne Specialist and a Combat Lifesaver. All three of these Hometown Heroes are role models that our entire community are proud to and honored to have as neighbors. Furthermore, Legislator Kennedy, in conjunction with Long Island Cares, was able to raise a recordsettiing $718 and 801 pounds of food for the Harry Chapin Food Bank, for stocking local food pantries, through the generosity of the entire community. In addition, the community and local businesses raised over $2,500 to help send Maria

Michta’s family to London to cheer her on as she goes for the gold. This year, the Concert Series provided a forum for local community groups to spread the word regarding their services and operations such as credit unions and green power. Legislator Kennedy would like to thank all those who helped make the Concert Series the success it was this year. The series could not have been the safe family event it was without Ron Schneider and his men and women from the Auxiliary Police and the Nesconset Fire Department. Of course, the Concert Series could not have been the phenomenal event it was week after week without the tireless effort of the Nesconset Chamber of Commerce led by Gina Coletti, Norma Dispenza and Jim Delahanty.

jlynn@theneighbornewspapers.com www.facebook.com/instepwithjamie Birthdays are exciting to me, in that they signify a great opportunity for a fresh start, even if you didn’t think you needed one. Trust me, we all need one, if for no other reason than to reinvigorate ourselves, to find that motivation to make all those longput-off changes…and to find that elusive sense of fulfillment and happiness we are all continually in search of. Sure, a clean slate can start on any day, at any point in time that we see fit. But there is just something about a brand new birthday year that just goes with a brand new you, isn’t there? Of course, this doesn’t mean I am necessarily overjoyed to turn 30, mind you. There is

still something… icky about that number for me, something less-than-appealing about rolling over that hill, so to speak. Just like there are those who would rather remain teenagers forever, or 21, or 49, or whatever the case may be – I’m content to be “Forever 29” for the foreseeable future – at least at heart. So here’s to the last (official) day of being 20-something. And here’s to tomorrow, and the next day, and every day after that. May they each bring new and exciting milestones much bigger than a mere number on a birthday cake.

To be continued next week, on the flip side of 30…

Power To Learn

With a focus on promoting reading and literacy, the New York Knicks and Cablevision’s Power To Learn today brought the Knicks Read to Achieve @powertolearn.com 2012 Summer Reading Program, presented by Kia Motors (Official Vehicle of the New York Knicks), to the Longwood Public Library. Participating in the event were Brookhaven Town Supervisor Mark Lesko and former NBA superstar John Starks. After welcoming remarks, Cablevision officials spoke about the program and thanked Kia Motors for their involvement. Brookhaven Town Supervisor Lesko and former Knicks superstar John Starks then discussed the importance of literacy with regard to achieving one’s goals in life. They also read aloud from the popular book, Cam Jansen and the Basketball Mystery by David A. Adler. Following the reading, the children took part in a fun “Knicks Postcard Club” quiz about the book and participated in raffles and autograph signings. “Cablevision, the New York Knicks and Kia Motors have done a terrific job in helping to promote literacy by bringing this innovative summer reading program to the children in our community,” said Brookhaven Town Supervisor Lesko. “Research has shown that children who read during the summer months entered the school year with a positive attitude

about reading, enjoy improved reading achievement and are more confident in the classroom.” “Motivating children to read through programs such as this can lead them to be more involved in their studies and be better prepared for the future,” said Tim Chaney, director, m a r k e t i n g communications, KMA. “Kia Motors is pleased to present the Knicks Read to Achieve @powetolearn.com summer reading program for the fifth consecutive year to open the door to lifelong achievement.” “Cablevision is committed to developing creative programs that take advantage of time outside the school year to help children learn and develop academically,” said Trent Anderson, Cablevision’s Vice President of Education. “Thanks to Kia Motors America and the New York Knicks, we are able to bring this Knicks Read to A c h i e v e @powertolearn.com summer reading event to the Longwood Public Library. Enhancing reading skills through events such as this has the potential to open the door to lifelong achievement.” Targeted to children ages 6-12, the summer reading event is implemented through participating libraries in Connecticut, New York and New Jersey. The literacy event encourages reading through the use of incentives and is highlighted by book giveaways, raffles, free tshirts and read-aloud

events with Knicks alumni and elected officials at select locations. For more information, parents and children can log onto www.powertolearn.com.

Park. “I am honored to be a part of this important event,” said Legislator Anker. “The walk is a wonderful way to raise funds while bringing increased awareness to the fight against breast cancer. Having lost a loved one to cancer myself, I continue to strongly advocate for cancer research until a cure is found.” Since 1993, 8 million

walkers across the United States have raised more than $460 million through Making Strides events. In 2011 alone, 1 million walkers collected more than $60 million to help fight this disease. For more information or to register for the event, call 1.800.227.2345 or visit the Making Strides website at cancer.org/stridesonline.

Lending A Helping Hand

brings awareness and Panera brings the funds to help sustain critical groups here on Long Island.” To give the fundraising a healthy head start, Panera is kicking off its campaign with POWER OF PINK DAY on Monday, October 1st, more than quadrupling its donation by contributing 100% from each bagel sold to the fund. George urges businesses, organizations and individuals to call their local Panera bakery now to reserve Pink Ribbon Bagels for October 1st. According to George, every Pink Ribbon Bagel or baker’s dozen of 13 Pink Ribbon Bagels sold that day or preordered for pickup on October 1st will provide a 100% donation to the designated breast cancer organizations. On POWER OF PINK DAY, Panera will contribute $1.25 for each bagel, $9.99 for each baker’s dozen. For those who have yet to taste a Pink Ribbon Bagel, it’s a Cherry Vanilla Bagel - a brown-sugar sweetened, wholesome cranberry-cherry chip bagel - that is shaped into iconic “pink ribbons” as a symbol of hope in support of local breast cancer help organizations. WALK 97.5’s Linda

Healy, herself a breast cancer survivor, spearheads the radio station’s breast cancer advocacy efforts and reminds us that POWER OF PINK DAY provides the perfect excuse to plan a bagel party at work or with friends on October 1st. Throughout the remainder of October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, each Long Island bakery-cafe will continue to contribute by donating 25 cents from every Pink Ribbon Bagel sold as well as $1.00 from each and every Power of Pink Baker’s Dozen - any assortment of 13 bagels that is sold that month. Last year, in partnership with WALK 97.5, Panera Bread’s Pink Ribbon Bagel campaign raised more than $26,000 over the course of the month-long campaign, including $10,000 on kick-off day. This year, the Long Island Panera Bread bakery-cafes are hoping to do even better - and they are counting on individuals and groups to make that happen. Anyone who is worried about breast cancer should call the Adelphi Breast Cancer Hotline for help at 800.877.8077. You are not alone.

Fire Island Lighthouse Events People’s Alliance Federal Credit Union, Leviton Manufacturing Company and GE Aviation have provided support and volunteer services to PalO-Mine Equestrian, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing therapy and recreation to children and adults with disabilities. Each corporation worked on a different volunteer project to help improve and maintain the equestrian facilities at Pal-O-Mine. Each year Pal-O-Mine receives support from local corporations to help

with various projects on its property. Volunteers are essential to the success of Pal-O-Mine programs and behind the scenes operations. This summer, three local corporations have worked on volunteer projects to build, revamp, and improve facility equipment as well as the grounds and amenities at Pal-O-Mine. People’s Alliance Federal Credit Union painted new PVC poles to be used in therapeutic lessons. Leviton Manufacturing Company stained the mounting ramp, built two

mounting blocks, an off side block and five new hay boxes for the therapeutic horses. GE Aviation stained the boardwalk and chairs, painted the gazebos and built a new shed to hold grain for the horses. For more information on having your corporation volunteer at Pal-O-Mine or to learn more about Pal-O-Mine’s programs and services, please call 631.348.1389 or visit at www.pal-omine.org.

Hillary Rutter, the director of the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program, today announced that her program will be a recipient in the 11th annual Panera Bread 2012 Pink Ribbon Bagels campaign. The Pink Ribbon Bagel campaign, to date, has raised well over $100,000 to benefit Long Island breast cancer organizations. On a happier, lighter note, both The Little Shelter and Forgotten Friends will be hosting great events next week:

Dear Readers,

FOR MORE INFORMATION CALL: 631-226-2636 - WWW.THENEIGHBORNEWSPAPERS.COM

Nathan Winograd, who heads up the No Kill Nation movement, states the following: How did Allegany County, MD go from an 85% kill rate to a 94% save rate? They did it with a highly effective, three step process: 1. Stop the killing. 2. Stop the killing. 3. Stop the killing. They also got rid of their regressive director, embraced the community and have focused on adoptions. How did Austin, TX go from killing an animal every 12 minutes to a 92% save rate? The same way. How did Marquette, MI go from a 64% rate of killing to a 93% save rate? The same. The number of No Kill communities is increasing rapidly. And, for those who defend killing based on the myth of pet overpopulation, the jig is up. As I’ve said many times, the first step to having a No Kill Shelter is to get rid of the shelter directors who believe that adoptable animals have to be killed to control the shelter population. I’m currently gathering data on those Long Island Shelters with the highest rate of killing, and I’ll report my findings to you in an upcoming column. Meanwhile, please remember that no shelter employee has the right to come to your home and demand that you turn your pet over to them without a court order, even if your dog has bitten someone. They must have a court order issued by a judge. Just because they are wearing a uniform and hold the title of animal control officer, they are NOT law officers. They’re just regular shelter employees wearing a uniform. Save-A-Pet: 631.473.6333
