Forever 29 By: Jamie Lynn Ryan It’s here. The last day of my 20’s. The beginning of the next stage of life, that magical, as yet unknown frontier known as my 30’s. What will this next decade bring? Normally, a birthday is just another year. A flip of the daily calendar. No real difference. But this year, it seems different. This year, I find myself using my milestone as a benchmark, as an evaluation of where my life has taken me thus far and where I want to take it from this point forward. Is it what I expected? No, not at all. Is that a bad thing? Nope, not necessarily. Since when did anything go according to plan?

Just like there are those who would rather remain teenagers forever, or 21, or 49, or whatever the case may be – I’m content to be “Forever 29” for the foreseeable future – at least at heart. So here’s to the last (official) day of being 20-something. And here’s to tomorrow, and the next day, and every day after that. May they each bring new and exciting milestones much bigger than a mere number on a birthday cake.

Birthdays are exciting to me, in that they signify a great opportunity for a fresh start, even if you didn’t think you needed one. Trust me, we all need one, if for no other reason than to reinvigorate ourselves, to find that motivation to make all those longput-off changes…and to find that elusive sense of fulfillment and happiness we are all continually in search of. Sure, a clean slate can start on any day, at any point in time that we see fit. But there is just something about a brand new birthday year that just goes with a brand new you, isn’t there? Of course, this doesn’t mean I am necessarily overjoyed to turn 30, mind you. There is

As this report uncovers, most homesellers make 7 deadly mistakes that cost them literally thousands of dollars. The good news is that each and every one of these mistakes is entirely preventable. In answer to this issue, industry insiders have prepared a free special report entitled “The 9 Step System to Get Your Home Sold Fast and For Top Dollar”. To hear a brief recorded message about how to order your free copy of this report, call 1-877-263-6397 and enter ID #1000. You can call anytime, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week . Of Us At

Greenlawn, Huntingto n, Huntingto n Station,

LONG ISLAND – A new report has just been released which reveals 7 costly mistakes that most homeowners make when selling their home, and a 9 Step System that can help you sell your home fast and for the most amount of money. This industry report shows clearly how the traditional ways of selling homes have become increasingly less and less effective in today’s market. The fact of the matter is that fully three quarters of homesellers don’t get what they want for their home and become disillusioned and - worse - financially disadvantaged when they put their home on the market.

Treasurer Carpenter was honored to be at the 5th Annual Wounded Warrior Soldier Ride, which was sponsored by the Village of Ocean Beach, and the Ocean Beach Fire Department. Andy Miller, the co-

chair of the committee, was very instrumental in bringing this project to fruition, along with Ian Levine of the Ocean Beach Fire Department. The soldiers arrived on the ferry and were honored at a dinner at the

Ocean Beach Fire House. A successful fundraiser was held at the Community House and had the generous participation of all of the local restaurants from Ocean Beach, with all proceeds going to the Wounded Warrior Project. This event brings out the best of a very special community. The Village, its employees, the members of the Ocean Beach Fire Department, and the men and women of the Ocean Beach Police

PET’S PLACE BY SHARON HUBBARD - Sharonadoptpet@aol.com • avoiceforanimals.org

Dear Readers,

On a happier, lighter note, both The Little Shelter and Forgotten Friends will be hosting great events next week:

For More Information Call: 631-226-2636 - www.theneighbornewspapers.com

Nathan Winograd, who heads up the No Kill Nation movement, states the following: How did Allegany County, MD go from an 85% kill rate to a 94% save rate? They did it with a highly effective, three step process: 1. Stop the killing. 2. Stop the killing. 3. Stop the killing. They also got rid of their regressive director, embraced the community and have focused on adoptions. How did Austin, TX go from killing an animal every 12 minutes to a 92% save rate? The same way. How did Marquette, MI go from a 64% rate of killing to a 93% save rate? The same. The number of No Kill communities is increasing rapidly. And, for those who defend killing based on the myth of pet overpopulation, the jig is up. As I’ve said many times, the first step to having a No Kill Shelter is to get rid of the shelter directors who believe that adoptable animals have to be killed to control the shelter population. I’m currently gathering data on those Long Island Shelters with the highest rate of killing, and I’ll report my findings to you in an upcoming column. Meanwhile, please remember that no shelter employee has the right to come to your home and demand that you turn your pet over to them without a court order, even if your dog has bitten someone. They must have a court order issued by a judge. Just because they are wearing a uniform and hold the title of animal control officer, they are NOT law officers. They’re just regular shelter employees wearing a uniform. Save-A-Pet: 631.473.6333

Little Shelter’s 15th annual PET-A-PALOOZA will be held on Saturday, August 18th and Sunday, August 19th, at 33 Warner Road in Huntington, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Featuring hundreds of adoptable animals looking for a home, plenty of activies for the kids, a HUGE Chinese Auction, Live Entertainment, Terrific BBQ, Rescue Groups and more. Have a great time, and help support Little Shelter at the same time. Forgotten Friends Summer Fair Garden Of Eve Organic Farm will be held on Saturday, August 18th, at 4558 Sound Avenue in Riverhead, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (Rain Date: Sunday, August 19th). Featuring lots of fun activities for everyone, including vendors, artists and crafters, artisanal food producers, on-the-spot portraits, Henna art, Belly dancing, colored hair extensions, dogs and cats for adoption, handmade jewelry, raffles/auctions with awesome prizes and much more.

Please visit a shelter and adopt. Remember, Your Best Friend Is Waiting...

Come celebrate not just a beautiful building, but the long line of students and faculty who provided the basis for many personal memories. Making Strides Kickoff

On Wednesday, August 1st, Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker joined American Cancer Society representatives at East Wind Caterers for the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer kick-off breakfast. This year, the Making Strides walks will be held Sunday, October 14th at the Brookhaven Campus at Dowling College, and Sunday, October 21st at Fields 4 and 5 at Jones Beach State

Park. “I am honored to be a part of this important event,” said Legislator Anker. “The walk is a wonderful way to raise funds while bringing increased awareness to the fight against breast cancer. Having lost a loved one to cancer myself, I continue to strongly advocate for cancer research until a cure is found.” Since 1993, 8 million

walkers across the United States have raised more than $460 million through Making Strides events. In 2011 alone, 1 million walkers collected more than $60 million to help fight this disease. For more information or to register for the event, call 1.800.227.2345 or visit the Making Strides website at cancer.org/stridesonline.

Paella perfect for last summer soiree When autumn is on the horizon and temperatures are about to take a turn for the colder, many families prefer to enjoy one last fiesta outdoors before calling it quits on the outdoor entertaining season. The following recipe for "Vegetable Paella" from Deb Roussou's "350 Best Vegan Recipes" (Robert Rose) makes a great dinner on the deck with family and friends.

Vegetable Paella

onion and fennel and cook, stirring frequently, until vegetables begin to soften, 4 to 5 minutes. Add garlic and cook, stirring frequently, until onions and fennel are lightly browned, 3 to 5 minutes. Mix in rice, lightly coating all grains with oil. Stir in water, paprika, wine, salt, saffron, artichoke hearts and sun-dried tomatoes. Gently shake pan to distribute rice evenly. Reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes.

toward the end of the browning process.

PET’S PLACE BY SHARON HUBBARD - Sharonadoptpet@aol.com • avoiceforanimals.org

On a happier, lighter note, both The Little Shelter and Forgotten Friends will be hosting great events next week:

Dear Readers, Nathan Winograd, who heads up the No Kill Nation movement, states the following: How did Allegany County, MD go from an 85% kill rate to a 94% save rate? They did it with a highly effective, three step process: 1. Stop the killing. 2. Stop the killing. 3. Stop the killing. They also got rid of their regressive director, embraced the community and have focused on adoptions. How did Austin, TX go from killing an animal every 12 minutes to a 92% save rate? The same way. How did Marquette, MI go from a 64% rate of killing to a 93% save rate? The same. The number of No Kill communities is increasing rapidly. And, for those who defend killing based on the myth of pet overpopulation, the jig is up.

FOR MORE INFORMATION CALL: 631-226-2636 - WWW.THENEIGHBORNEWSPAPERS.COM
