The High Holy Days of the Jewish faith, also known as the Days of Awe, are a time for reflection and prayer among Jews. The High Holy Days are comprised of Rosh Hashanah, known as the Jewish New Year, and Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. Rosh Hashanah, for Jews worldwide, marks a time of personal reflection, prayer, and repentance. Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the year for Jews, is a fast day. On Yom Kippur, Jews pray to atone for both personal and community sins and pray to be “included in the book of life” for the upcoming year. Though a solemn time, the High Holy Days are also marked by a beautiful liturgical service with prayers sung to beautiful, old and often haunting melodies. As such, Sinai Reform Temple is pleased that Cantor David Mannes will join Rabbi LosbenOstrov, Sinai Reform Temple’s Rabbi, in leading our congregation during this holy time. Cantor David Mannes is a member of the American Conference of Cantors and holds both a B.Ed. and M.Ed. from the University of Alberta. He received his cantorial training through

the ACC and Hebrew Union College, as well as studying with his late father Cantor Fred S. Mannes. He has served both Reform and C o n s e r v a t i v e congregations in Canada and the United States. In addition to his Cantorial duties, he has been the principal of three religious schools. A former English and Art teacher, Cantor Mannes also worked as a film producer and director/scriptwriter. He is the author of two books of fiction: Nahanni (2007) and Creature Feature (2010). He is married to Dr. Sandra GhitterMannes and they have two grown children and one grandson. Cantor Mannes has a lyric tenor voice with a baritone range that invites congregational participation. For the High Holy Days he will bring traditional liturgical music as well as newer compositions to Sinai Reform. Services for the High Holidays begin on the evening of Sunday, September 16th and continue on Monday, September 17th. Yom Kippur services start the evening of Tuesday, September 25th and continue on Wednesday,

September 26th, then end with a community break fast the evening of the 26th. For more information or to attend High Holy Day services at Sinai Reform Temple, please contact the Temple office at 631.665.5755 or e-mail srtoffice@gmail.com. Everyone is also welcome to attend their Sabbath services. They are held every Friday evening at 7:30 p.m., except for the family service, which is held the first Friday of the month, at 6:30 p.m. Sinai Reform Temple welcomes everyone seeking to explore the richness and tradition of Judaism. Our congregational family is dedicated to worship, spirituality, education, celebration, and social action. Together they practice Tikkun Olam, making our local and worldwide community a better place. As a member congregation of the Union for Reform Judaism for over sixty years, they have been and will continue to be a welcoming, supporting, caring, and diverse congregation. Sinai Reform Temple is located at 39 Brentwood Road in Bay Shore.

It’s not often that things work out perfectly, from beginning to end. But, if ever there was a time and a place – and a day – for an exception to that rule, I am happy to say that my 30th birthday came awfully close. I suppose, when you start with the love and thoughtfulness of two parents who would do anything to make their “little girl’s” day one fit for a princess – well then, how could you possibly go wrong? From morning til night, everything fell into place perfectly, making for a day full of magic and memories for me. Months ago, when asked what I wanted to do for the big day, my initial response

jlynn@theneighbornewspapers.com www.facebook.com/instepwithjamie was, “Take off from work.” That being a given, my next wish was to spend that day off in my favorite place (so far), Manhattan. I’m one of those people for whom the city never gets old. No matter how many times you visit, there is always something new to see and a unique experience waiting around the next corner. This time, it was heading to Broadway to see Jersey Boys (finally!) and dining at Patsy’s, an old favorite of the one and only Frank Sinatra, among countless others. Phenomenal, on both fronts. That was the plan, anyway. What to do with that small window of time before dinner and the show though… Let me explain something here… EVERY time we have visited the city, for as far back as I can remember, I have wanted

to take a carriage ride through Central Park. Call it my very own Cinderella fantasy or whatever you’d like, but there is something magical about seeing those horses strolling the streets of New York City, no matter the season. And so, on this day – my day – I got to be Cinderella. How awesome is that? Thank you to everyone who made my 30th birthday – and the days leading up to and following it – more special than words alone can express. But above all, thank you to my parents for making a milestone I had approached with mixed emotions into a weeklong succession of presents and festivities, culminating in just one – emotion, that is – happiness. Complete and utter happiness. Like I said, perfection.

hamlet of Southold, The Reichert Family Center will allow the Society to expand its offerings of exhibitions and programs to the public. The building was purchased from the estate of Society life member, Robert W. Gillispie III, in 2011. “We are simply delighted to be adding this resource to our community,” stated Geoffrey K. Fleming, Director of the Society. “We hope that this addition will enable the Society to not only share more of its own collection, but to also exhibit objects loaned from private collections and other institutions,” he continued. The building, which dates to the 1840s, was purchased in 1864 to house the dry goods business of Captain Sherburne A. Beckwith (1822-1896), who hired local carpenter William H. Corwin to build his new home just west of the store building. Following

Dear Readers, In the interest of providing correct information rather than mindless reconstituted filler, here are some true facts about raccoons: 1. Myth: Raccoons are all carriers of rabies. Fact: The majority of Raccoons DO NOT CARRY RABIES, and if a raccoon contracts rabies it will soon die, just as a dog or a human would. It is not “a carrier” that lives out its lifetime carrying rabies and potentially infecting humans or pets. 2. Myth: Raccoons carry ticks and fleas Fact: That potential exists just as it does with cats and dogs. 3. Myth: Raccoons are strictly nocturnal, so if you see a raccoon in the daytime, it is rabid. Fact: Although in this part of the country raccoons are more active at night, they will come out during the day looking for food...especially the females looking for food to feed a litter of babies. 4. Myth: Raccoons are members of the rodent family. Fact: Raccoons are members of the Procyonidae family, which is part of the order Carnivora, to which the cat and dog families also belong. Among the raccoon’s closest relatives are the coatimundis, ringtails and red pandas. Readers, did you know that raccoons are sold as pets in some pet stores in Florida? And it is not unusual to find raccoons visiting picnic areas during the daytime hours in Florida, where picnickers delight in their adorable antics. I visited a friend in Florida who has had a pet raccoon for thirteen years. The raccoon litter box trained herself and participates in the household just as a beloved, affectionate dog would. As a matter of fact, my friend’s dog and raccoon are best buddies. When I picked the raccoon up, it was like snuggling with a live teddy bear! This raccoon was originally found injured outside on the back deck. Here at home in Nassau and Suffolk, each county has very different laws governing the treatment of raccoons from one county to the next. Ah, our uninformed, head-in-the-sand local politicians. But you already know how I feel about most of them. Please note that I am not suggesting Readers run out and invite the nearest raccoon home with them. Please visit a shelter and adopt. Remember, Your Best Friend Is Waiting...

Beckwith’s death, the store was leased to and occupied by Frank T. Wells, who ran his own dry goods enterprise from the building in the early 20th century. During the mid-20th century, the shop was subdivided into two spaces, with Capt. Beckwith’s grandson, Joseph Beckwith Hartranft (1890-1982), using his portion as a painting studio and gallery. Hartranft was a very successful local painter, continuing a tradition that began during the 19th century with the arrival of many other artists to the area. This tradition will be continued through a partnership with the respected Grenning Gallery of Sag Harbor. The gallery is known for featuring emerging artists who are reviving old masters' techniques but use contemporary subject matter. “This is a perfect partnership for us as the Grenning Gallery honors

the century old tradition of patronizing artists that come to the East End to painting ‘en plein air’ in the summer,” stated Fleming. The Society will work with the gallery during the summer and early fall each year while featuring its own collections during the late fall through late spring months. “Plein Air Paintings, Here and Now” will be the first of many collaborations between the Grenning Gallery and the Southold Historical Society. This exhibit will feature plein air local landscapes Nelson H. White, Ramiro Sanchez, Ben Fenske, Marc Dalessio, Melissa Franklin Sanchez, Joe Altwer, Leo Mancini-Hresko, James Daga Albinson, as well as a few bronzes by the sculptor Chad Fisher. A classically trained sculptor, Fisher (b 1987) will sculpt a portrait head in the new space to christen the new,

culturally-alive venue. Anchored by Nelson H. White, and his long time artistic and family ties with Shelter Island and the North Fork, a new group of mostly young painters has formed in and around the Grenning Gallery over the past 14 years. These artists spend the winters painting in their studios, mostly in Florence Italy, and then flock to the East End for the light in the warmer season. The Reichert Family Center and Cosden Price Gallery will be open Thursday through Saturday, from 1 to 4 p.m. through October 6th. The building is located at 54127 Main Road (Route 25), Southold, just west of Jeni’s Main Street Grill. For information on this press release or other Society activities, please contact the Society at 631.765.5500 or visit us online at www.southoldhistoricalso ciety.org.

Kickstands are set to be up by 10 a.m. A rain date has been set for September 30th. “This event is all about coming together as a community and helping those who cannot help themselves,” said co-chair of the event Charley Hudson. “It is heartwarming to have talented individuals enthusiastically lend themselves to help benefitthousand of fellow Long Islanders.”

Autism is the most common condition in a group of developmental disorders known as the autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and is typically diagnosed before the age of three. According to the Centers for Disease Control, the alarming rate of autism is 1 in every 88 births and a child is diagnosed on the spectrum. ASDs occur in all racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic groups and are four times more likely to occur in boys than in girls. When autism is detected earlier and appropriate intervention is taken, children with ASD can become more functional and learn to adapt to the world around them. No matter the age of the diagnosis, children and adults with ASD are constant learners and significant improvements can be made at any age. WOODLOCH IS HONORING

Nestled In The Picturesque Northeast Pocono Mountains Lake Region

“That’s a ‘healthy’ return on investment, and one that we hope will inspire participants to take up walking regularly using American Heart Association Walking Paths and Walking Clubs.” Heart Walk participants will experience three “communities” that feature relevant resources and activities. The “My Heart” community will: • Foster hope by bringing together people with similar experiences, sorrows and fears. • Allow people to acknowledge their losses and pay tribute to loved ones. • Provide an opportunity to honor survivors and individuals whose family and friends

have been impacted by heart disease and stroke. • Give survivors hope that they can influence their own and their loved ones’ destinies by connecting risk factors to a personal loss. The “My Life” community will: • Inspire participants to make changes in their daily behavior that reduce risk for heart disease and stroke, such as increasing physical activity and making heart-healthy choices a part of daily life. • Inspire participants to make a long-term commitment in the fight against heart disease and stroke by volunteering for the American Heart Association. The “My Community” area will: • Celebrate individuals

Red Caps & White CapsAll Heart Disease Survivors Receive a Red Cap! Stroke Survivors receive a White Cap! Research has shown walking is the single most effective form of exercise to achieve heart health. The benefits of walking and moderate physical activity for as little as 30 minutes each day can help reduce the risk of heart disease. “We want people to know that it is never too late to start down a healthier path,” said John R. Buran, Chairman of the Heart Walk. “Our hope is that the Heart Walk will help jump start a culture of healthy living among participants and increase passion for supporting the lifesaving work of the American

Heart Association.” The annual success of the Long Island Heart Walk is due in part to national sponsors, Subway and Jenny Craig, presenting sponsor Flushing Bank, and Long Island businesses such as Astoria Savings Bank, Allstate, Geico, WinthropUniversity Hospital, Deloitte, J.H. Cohn LLP, MSC Industrial Supply Co., St. Joseph’s College and Stony Brook University Medical Center. For information on participating in the Heart Walk, call the American Heart Association at 516.450.9126 or visit www.longislandheartwalk .org.

The Need To Develop A Retirement Plan (NAPSI)—Preparing for retirement can be a challenging process— and emerging trends are not helping matters. Fortunately, developing a retirement plan can help. That’s the word from experts who say changes in employee benefits,

longer life spans, uncertainty with Social Security and Medicare and the rising cost of health care have made funding retirement more difficult. With most of the responsibilities for financial aspects of

retirement now falling squarely on the shoulders of individuals, the key, according to Insured Retirement Institute President and CEO Cathy Weatherford, is to have a comprehensive plan that addresses both retirement income and

expenses-including health care. National Retirement Planning Week was created to remind consumers of the importance of having a plan for funding their retirement. For those needing help,

Setting The Stage (NAPSI)—With a flood of real estate listings on the market, sellers continuously search for ways to stand out. The process is called staging. Done correctly, it can make a house look bigger, brighter, cleaner, warmer and make homebuyers want to buy it. To help, here are some tips: • Curb Appeal: The exterior of the house is the first thing potential buyers see; make sure it’s bright, clean and inviting.

• Clean: Clean from top to bottom, getting rid of clutter and organizing the space. Don’t forget the ceilings and fans. • Brighten Up: Do what you can to help buyers envision living in the space. Make sure windows are streak free. Hide personal pictures. Instead, decorate with fresh flowers. • Living Space: Choose neutral tones for the walls and furniture. Slipcovers are an inexpensive way to spruce up old furniture. Add pillows for pops of

color. • Dining Area: Set your dining room or kitchen table. Use brightly colored plates and napkins. • Master Bedroom: You can make the space appear larger by limiting furniture to essentials; a bed and dresser will do. Working closely with a licensed real estate agent can often help sellers achieve the best results. For more staging and DIY tips, visit www.Homes.com's Idea Gallery.

Common Car Seat Mistakes Parents Should Avoid driving a mile from home, so my son doesn’t need to be secured in his car seat since it’s a short trip.” Reminder: You should buckle up properly on every trip—no matter the distance—especially since most crashes occur close to home. Shortcut: “I’m picking up several kids after soccer practice and I’m going to put my 8-year-old daughter in the front seat so all the children can fit into the car.” Reminder: All children under age 13 are safest when riding in the backseat and properly restrained in a car seat, booster seat or seat belt. Shortcut: “We will be driving more people in our car than we have seat belts. Since it’s a short trip, it’s not a big deal for someone to ride on another person’s lap.” Reminder: It’s never safe to ride on another person’s lap. Each

passenger should be properly restrained on every trip. Shortcut: “My son is 10 years old and 4’6” tall. He’s big enough to use a seat belt now.” Reminder: The American Academy of Pediatrics now recommends children continue to use beltpositioning booster seats until they are 4’9” and the seat belt fits properly. Help For Parents Fortunately, AAA experts are available to help parents with car seat installation. Visit an AAA club, go to www.seatcheck.org or call (866) SEATCHECK [(866) 732-8243]. Easy Tiling Ideas (NAPSI)—Renovations don’t have to be costly, messy and time consuming. There are ways to avoid the headaches often associated with home upgrades. Tiles are a great way to add a punch of personality to your home and many tiling projects can be completed in just one day. With a few tools and some elbow grease, you can breathe new life and flair into any room. Get creative inspiration with simple tiling projects

you can use to liven up your home: 1. Call attention to one wall of a room with a bold tile accent. Be daring with patterns, or make it modern with subway tiles. 2. Tile the kitchen backsplash to add color and protect the wall from cooking messes. Bondera TileMatSet, a doublesided, peel- and-stick tiling adhesive is a great tool to use instead of mortar and mastic, eliminating the mess and allowing you to grout

immediately after positioning the tiles. 3. Modernize old trivets by using the tile adhesive to create a custom tiled pattern that pops against tableware. 4. Explore your creative side by designing a charming tile pattern on an old tabletop, which will add pizzazz to lunches and evening drinks. For more on these and similar projects, visit www.bonderatilematset.co m.

Hearing Instrument Advantages More baby boomers are staying in the workforce longer. Between 2006 and 2016, the number of older people in the workforce is expected to soar, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Workers between the ages of 55 and 64 are expected to increase by 36.5 percent. The number of workers between 65 and 74 is expected to climb by a staggering 83.4 percent, and even the number of workers who are 75 and older is expected to grow by 84.3 percent. By 2016, the BLS says, workers age 65 and over are expected to make up 6.1 percent of the total labor force - a steep jump from their 3.6 percent share in 2006. This means that individuals need to take charge of their health -

including hearing health so they can maximize their chances for success on the job. Along with maintaining a healthy lifestyle, it’s important that boomers routinely get their hearing checked - and that they address any hearing loss so it doesn’t undermine their efforts on the job or their quality of life. Consider this: According to the Better Hearing Institute (www.betterhearing.org) more than 34 million Americans suffer from hearing loss - about 11 percent of the U.S. population - and 60 percent of them are below retirement age. Research shows that the use of hearing aids reduces the risk of income loss by 90 to 100 percent for those with milder hearing loss, and from 65 to 77 percent

for those with severe to moderate hearing loss. More good news: Today’s employers recognize the changing demographics of the modern aging workforce and increasingly are making efforts to hold onto their older workers. Employers value the experience that mature employees bring to the job - along with the strong work ethic and other positive attributes that older workers tend to possess. More and more companies, in fact, engage in workplace wellness programs to help keep their employees in good health. And hearing health - including hearing checks - is increasingly included in these programs. For information on this topic, visit www.hearingcheck.org.
