It’s not often that things work out perfectly, from beginning to end. But, if ever there was a time and a place – and a day – for an exception to that rule, I am happy to say that my 30th birthday came awfully close. I suppose, when you start with the love and thoughtfulness of two parents who would do anything to make their “little girl’s” day one fit for a princess – well then, how could you possibly go wrong? From morning til night, everything fell into place perfectly, making for a day full of magic and memories for me. Months ago, when asked what I wanted to do for the big day, my initial response

jlynn@theneighbornewspapers.com www.facebook.com/instepwithjamie was, “Take off from work.” That being a given, my next wish was to spend that day off in my favorite place (so far), Manhattan. I’m one of those people for whom the city never gets old. No matter how many times you visit, there is always something new to see and a unique experience waiting around the next corner. This time, it was heading to Broadway to see Jersey Boys (finally!) and dining at Patsy’s, an old favorite of the one and only Frank Sinatra, among countless others. Phenomenal, on both fronts. That was the plan, anyway. What to do with that small window of time before dinner and the show though… Let me explain something here… EVERY time we have visited the city, for as far back as I can remember, I have wanted
to take a carriage ride through Central Park. Call it my very own Cinderella fantasy or whatever you’d like, but there is something magical about seeing those horses strolling the streets of New York City, no matter the season. And so, on this day – my day – I got to be Cinderella. How awesome is that? Thank you to everyone who made my 30th birthday – and the days leading up to and following it – more special than words alone can express. But above all, thank you to my parents for making a milestone I had approached with mixed emotions into a weeklong succession of presents and festivities, culminating in just one – emotion, that is – happiness. Complete and utter happiness. Like I said, perfection.

PET’S PLACE BY SHARON HUBBARD - Sharonadoptpet@aol.com • avoiceforanimals.org
Dear Readers, In the interest of providing correct information rather than mindless reconstituted filler, here are some true facts about raccoons: 1. Myth: Raccoons are all carriers of rabies. Fact: The majority of Raccoons DO NOT CARRY RABIES, and if a raccoon contracts rabies it will soon die, just as a dog or a human would. It is not “a carrier” that lives out its lifetime carrying rabies and potentially infecting humans or pets. 2. Myth: Raccoons carry ticks and fleas Fact: That potential exists just as it does with cats and dogs. 3. Myth: Raccoons are strictly nocturnal, so if you see a raccoon in the daytime, it is rabid. Fact: Although in this part of the country raccoons are more active at night, they will come out during the day looking for food...especially the females looking for food to feed a litter of babies. 4. Myth: Raccoons are members of the rodent family. Fact: Raccoons are members of the Procyonidae family, which is part of the order Carnivora, to which the cat and dog families also belong. Among the raccoon’s closest relatives are the coatimundis, ringtails and red pandas. Readers, did you know that raccoons are sold as pets in some pet stores in Florida? And it is not unusual to find raccoons visiting picnic areas during the daytime hours in Florida, where picnickers delight in their adorable antics. I visited a friend in Florida who has had a pet raccoon for thirteen years. The raccoon litter box trained herself and participates in the household just as a beloved, affectionate dog would. As a matter of fact, my friend’s dog and raccoon are best buddies. When I picked the raccoon up, it was like snuggling with a live teddy bear! This raccoon was originally found injured outside on the back deck. Here at home in Nassau and Suffolk, each county has very different laws governing the treatment of raccoons from one county to the next. Ah, our uninformed, head-in-the-sand local politicians. But you already know how I feel about most of them. Please note that I am not suggesting Readers run out and invite the nearest raccoon home with them. Please visit a shelter and adopt. Remember, Your Best Friend Is Waiting...

The Huntington Historical Society is pleased to offer tours of the Van Wyck-Lefferts Tide Mill. The mill, which was built in 1795, is owned by the Nature Conservancy and is the only surviving mill in Huntington. This historic site provided a way for farmers to transform their oats, wheat and corn into flour, which made the mill an extremely important part of the local agricultural past. In addition, it is one of
the best preserved 18th century tide mills in the country. This is an unusual and terrific way to enjoy Huntington’s rich heritage. These private tours are accessible by a short boat ride only. Please not that neither the boat nor the mill is handicapped accessible. This trip is not available to children under age twelve. Advanced registration is required. Contact 631.427.7045, extension 403 in order to register, and
for further information. The dates and times are as follows: September 14th, at 9:30 a.m. September 28th, at 9:30 a.m. October 5th, at 2:15 p.m. October 19th, at 1:45 p.m. October 30th, at 10:30 a.m. November 5th, at 2:15 p.m.

Huntington Supervisor Frank P. Petrone joined family, friends and members of the Cold Spring Harbor Soccer Club on August 9th in unveiling a statue of the late Brianna “Breezy” Titcomb at the Town park named in memory of the 13-year-old who was killed by a drunk driver while on vacation with her family in Texas several years ago. The sculpture by artist Michael Alfano was commissioned by Breezy’s parents, Dawn and John Titcomb, and depicts the teen in her soccer uniform, kicking a soccer ball. Massachusetts-based Alfano has several additional works on display on Long Island, including anti-drunk driving sculptures at Farmingdale State College and Eisenhower Park. In his remarks, Supervisor Petrone noted that the sculpture
completed the park, which includes two synthetic athletic fields, a practice area, a playground and a comfort station and concession building. The Supervisor said he hoped the sculpture would serve as an inspiration to the youth soccer players who use the park as well as make a statement about the effects drunk drivers can cause. Joining supervisor Petrone at the ceremony were Dawn and John Titcomb, their son, Brett, Cold Spring Harbor Soccer Club president Michael Fleischer and Councilman Mark Mayoka. Council Members Mark Cuthbertson, Susan Berland and Eugene Cook sent their regrets at not being able to attend. Following the ceremony, several teammates and friends of Brianna participated in a scrimmage in her
memory. Breezy Park was built on the site of the former Mohlenhoff property. The property originally was slated to become a bus depot and repair yard for the South Huntington School District. But thanks to dedicated and caring residents and a tireless effort by the Cold Spring Harbor Soccer Club leadership, the Huntington Town Board was able to acquire the property in partnership with Suffolk County through its Open Space Preservation Program. It was the Cold Spring Harbor Soccer Club’s idea to name the new park in honor and memory of Brianna. The park was constructed with a combination of Town funds and a $1 million private donation from Joe and Nikki Gregory.

opportunity to be able to go to Chaminade was amazing because it was one of the only places where I could really let my talents shine, and skills that I have learned in scouting come out and be used,” said Ryan. Ryan will be attending Loyola University in Maryland in the fall and will be majoring in Psychology. He commented, “The skills and life lessons that I have learned through Boy Scouting will be ones that will stay with me forever. Scouting has shown me that no matter what, I should always be true to myself and do what is the best for everyone I encounter.” The newest Eagle Scout is the son of Andy and Venise Mulé-Glass, and brother of Kristen and Dan. The Glass family resides in Dix Hills.

Ryan began scouting in first grade as a Tiger in Cub Scout Pack 125, where he went on to earn his Arrow of Light Award, the highest award in the Cub Scout program. During his seven years as a member of Troop 125, he held several positions including Assistant Senior Patrol Leader, Patrol Leader, Assistant Patrol Leader, Den Chief and Chaplain’s Aide. While in Boy Scouts, Ryan achieved many certifications including BSA Lifeguard, CPR Certification, Firem’n Chit and National Youth Leadership Training. He is an Ordeal member in the Shinnecock Lodge Nissequogue Chapter of the Order of the Arrow, Scouting’s National Honor Society and has been awarded all of the religious emblems of his Roman Catholic faith: Cub Scouts - Light of Christ and Parvuli Dei; Boy Scouts - Ad Altare Dei and the Pope Pius XII. In addition to being a Boy Scout, Ryan is also a Sea Scout with Ship 460 based out of Northport (where he earned the Apprentice and Ordinary Ranks) and part of Venture Crew 333 out of Nassau County (where he earned his 3-year pin and the Bronze Award). Ryan attended Holy Family Regional School from Pre-K through 4th grade. He then attended Commack Middle School where he earned the Golden Wildcat Award all three years. As a 2012 graduate of Chaminade High School, Ryan was active in many extracurricular activities while in school, including the Drama Club, Speech and Debate, Glee Club, Emmaus (a volunteer organization), Catholic League, Math Team, Chamber Ensemble, Sodality and Music Club. “Just the overall

Chaminade graduate Ryan Glass became Boy Scout Troop 125’s (Commack) 89th Eagle Scout on April 3rd and recently celebrated his achievement on August 4th during his Eagle Court of Honor, held at the Commack United Methodist Church. For his Eagle Leadership Service Project, Ryan built a prayer garden behind Holy Family Regional School at Christ the King Church. The project consisted of digging 7-13 inches in the area, taking down the fence around it, placing recycled concrete aggregate, sand, and the pavers, replacing rotted railroad ties, and cleaning out the surrounding gardens. This area will be used by the school, church, parishioners and the nuns and priests living at Christ the King. This garden will service many generations of students and visitors for years to come. A total of 582 hours were logged into the project from the planning stage through its completion by Ryan and 19 others. The funds necessary to complete the project were raised during a car wash at Sunshine Physical Therapy in Commack, which is owned by Ryan’s mother, Venise Mulé-Glass. Ryan commented, “I chose to do my project at Holy Family Regional School at Christ the King Roman Catholic Church because of my fond memories and the basis of religion that I learned as a student there. Without my religious values, I would not be the person I am today. These values truly help me to live out the scout oath and law, mainly in being true to myself and to the people around me.” Ryan earned a total of 66 Merit Badges (21 of which are necessary to obtain the rank of Eagle)
