Wells, who ran his own dry goods enterprise from the building in the early 20th century. During the mid20th century, the shop was subdivided into two spaces, with Capt. Beckwith’s grandson, Joseph Beckwith Hartranft (1890-1982), using his portion as a painting studio and gallery. Hartranft was a very successful local painter, continuing a tradition that began during the 19th century with the arrival of many other artists to the area. Dear Readers, In the interest of providing correct information rather than mindless reconstituted filler, here are some true facts about raccoons: 1. Myth: Raccoons are all carriers of rabies. Fact: The majority of Raccoons DO NOT CARRY RABIES, and if a raccoon contracts rabies it will soon die, just as a dog or a human would. It is not “a carrier” that lives out its lifetime carrying rabies and potentially infecting humans or pets. 2. Myth: Raccoons carry ticks and fleas Fact: That potential exists just as it does with cats and dogs. 3. Myth: Raccoons are strictly nocturnal, so if you see a raccoon in the daytime, it is rabid. Fact: Although in this part of the country raccoons are more active at night, they will come out during the day looking for food...especially the females looking for food to feed a litter of babies. 4. Myth: Raccoons are members of the rodent family. Fact: Raccoons are members of the Procyonidae family, which is part of the order Carnivora, to which the cat and dog families also belong. Among the raccoon’s closest relatives are the coatimundis, ringtails and red pandas. Readers, did you know that raccoons are sold as pets in some pet stores in Florida? And it is not unusual to find raccoons visiting picnic areas during the daytime hours in Florida, where picnickers delight in their adorable antics. I visited a friend in Florida who has had a pet raccoon for thirteen years. The raccoon litter box trained herself and participates in the household just as a beloved, affectionate dog would. As a matter of fact, my friend’s dog and raccoon are best buddies. When I picked the raccoon up, it was like snuggling with a live teddy bear! This raccoon was originally found injured outside on the back deck. Here at home in Nassau and Suffolk, each county has very different laws governing the treatment of raccoons from one county to the next. Ah, our uninformed, head-in-the-sand local politicians. But you already know how I feel about most of them. Please note that I am not suggesting Readers run out and invite the nearest raccoon home with them. Please visit a shelter and adopt. This is the third part of a four part series about the changes in the Catholic funeral rites as they relate to cremation. There are two points on which I would like to focus in this article. The first is the adamant statement made by the Church that cremated remains of a deceased Catholic must be treated the same as the human body and that cremation is NOT the final disposition. Therefore, some final resting place for the Cremated Remains must be made. The scattering of ashes over land or sea is NOT an acceptable practice for deceased members of the Catholic Church nor is leaving them in the care of the funeral home nor is it acceptable to keep Cremated Remains at home on the mantle or in the garage. The Cremated Remains of a person should be interred in the ground or entombed in a niche (a mausoleum for cremated remains) in a suitable urn. The second point on which I would like to focus is cremation does NOT mean there isn’t any wake or religious service prior to the cremation. It simple means that instead of burial or entombment in a mausoleum the deceased is cremated. But first you can have a wake if desired, religious services and a funeral mass before the cremation. While promoting the values that underlie the Church’s preference for burial of the body, the Church must exercise sensitive pastoral judgment concerning the choice that nearly 20 percent of Catholics are making in favor of cremation. Economic, geographic, ecological or family factors on occasion make cremation the only feasible choice. TO BE CONTINUED 240511N0822

On July 15th, 2010, the West Babylon Union Free School District entered into an energy performance contract with Ameresco, an energy efficiency company that identifies energy-saving opportunities in schools and other government buildings. Upon conducting an energy absorption audit in an effort to better understand the district’s level of energy consumption, Ameresco made recommendations to the district. The work of identifying and installing new and upgraded energyefficient equipment in West Babylon began a month later. The projected completion date of this contract is October 2012. Ameresco will absorb the costs of the energy upgrades until the contract is completed. At that time, a portion of the

overall cost savings will be used to reimburse the company, while the remaining savings will be kept by the school district. Reduced spending on increasing energy costs leads to additional funding for educational programs. Throughout the duration of the contract, a myriad of energy-saving measures have been implemented. The district began realizing the efficiencies of these improvements as the energy conservation measures were being installed. The initial year savings, after all installations have been completed, are estimated to be approximately $272,087. Ameresco has projected that the guaranteed savings to the district over an 18-year period will be approximately $6,561,888. In addition, the district
