LARGE REGULAR PIE

LONG ISLAND – A new report has just been released which reveals 7 costly mistakes that most homeowners make when selling their home, and a 9 Step System that can help you sell your home fast and for the most amount of money. This industry report shows clearly how the traditional ways of selling homes have become increasingly less and less effective in today’s market. The fact of the matter is that fully three quarters of homesellers don’t get what they want for their home and become disillusioned and - worse - financially disadvantaged when they put their home on the market.

Continued failure to pay all taxes levied against the property could result in your loss of the property.” In September, the Nassau County Treasurer will be mailing notices to all property owners with taxes in arrears. Receiver Stefanich advises homeowners who fall under those circumstances to contact the Nassau County Treasurer at 516.571.2090 to determine the amount in arrears. They may also visit the Treasurer’s office at 1 West Street, Mineola. Receiver Stefanich noted, “I want to make sure that all Oyster Bay property taxpayers whose taxes are in arrears do not jeopardize their home ownership because they were unaware of the consequences of not responding to notices from the Town or County.”

Community Keeps On Giving Last fall, the Massapequa community was ravaged by Hurricane Irene. Families in many Long Island towns were evacuated from their homes. Streets, homes, basements and yards flooded. We lost power, many families for a week or more. However, within a day or two the tides subsided, roads were

passable, schools and hospitals remained open and functional. In all, our infrastructure was intact. Many communities were not so fortunate. Many towns in upstate New York and parts of New England lost everything, including homes, jobs, and all the basic necessities of life. Immediately after the

hurricane Governor Como spoke in the town of Pratsville, N.Y., hit particularly hard by Irene. The Governor emphasized the devastation across the state and called on New Yorkers to rally together and lend their support. The Siani Family of Massapequa Park answered the call and Continued On Page 11

and showed their school spirit with a daily theme such as crazy hats, team jerseys, pajamas, mismatched clothing and crazy hair. East Lake and Unqua Elementary schools, added their support by providing likenew coats from their own annual coat drives. Throughout the holidays, the Massapequa community continued their support with a holiday toy drive. In early December, more than 300 toys and 150 coats were delivered by Patient Airlift S e r v i c e s (http://www.palservices.or g), which donated their services, as did the pilots. In fact, pilots of the two planes had to climb over the mountain of donated goods to reach the cockpit. More recently, a book drive was held to help the K-12 school in this rural community expand and update their library and allow students Continued On Page 12

lives near Pratsville and volunteers in the neighboring town of Conesville as a fire department EMT. This area of NY was not expected to be hit hard by they hurricane and, as a result was under prepared for the level of damage it sustained. After the hurricane, local and external communication was cut off. Like many Long Island residents with families in affected regions, Ms. Sinai and her sister could not contact each other for two days. After the initial emergency drive, Ms. Siani continued to organize communitybased relief efforts. Birch Lane Elementary supported the “Rebuild Gilboa” fund, established to support children and families in the Gilboa Conesville Central School district. Birch Lane School hosted a “Spirit Week” fundraiser. Students donated $1 a day

Continued From Page 10 launched an emergency donation drive requesting personal hygiene items, food, water, clothing and other support. With great compassion, this Long Island family rallied the community, which wasted no time taking action. In just two days enough supplies were collected to fill a U-Haul cargo van and one mini-van to capacity and were delivered to Gilboa Conesville Central School, just outside of Prattsville. Those affected by the hurricane were shuttled to the school in the days that followed to pick up supplies and clothing. “It was heart-warming to see the amount of donations at the school, fire house, and command center in town,” said Kerin Siani. “But, it was also very sad to think of the overwhelming need that they represented.” Ms. Siani has local ties to the area. Community Keeps On Giving Continued From Page 11 to take books home over the summer. “While toys and books may not be a necessities in life, they go a long way toward maintaining and building the spirit of the children and families who lost everything to raging flood waters,” said Ms. Siani. “It also represents the ongoing commitment our community made to helping this area with continued building following the initial reaction to the disaster.” As a testament to the

Massapequa community, no committees or task forces were created to organize this effort. Ms. Sinai relied on oldfashioned grassroots support and word-of mouth to spread the word to family, friends, local PTAs and Pack 696 Scouting connections. “As with all good networking, one contact led to another,” said Ms. Siani. “There were amazing people I communicated and became acquainted with along the way who wanted

to help.” The effort continues, almost a year later. The Siani’s made additional trips to the region in March and April to deliver more than 4,000 used books that were donated in the February book drive. These books will help rebuild the Gilboa Central School library. Today, the Rebuild Gilgoa fund is now an IRS recognized 501(c)3 public charity entitled "Giving Children Community Support.”

End-Of-Summer Food Drive Thirteen year-old Hampton/NYC resident, Grant Andreas had an idea to collect the leftover food from the summer months to feed the struggling families of Long Island. Thanks to help of Strong’s Marine and Hall Lane Movin & Storage, Move For Hunger is turning Grant’s idea into a reality wit the

first annual Hamptons End of Summer Food Drive. Over 320,000 people on Long Island, including 118,000 children, live on incomes that put them at risk for hunger. The collections from th End of Summer Food Drive will directly benefit the food supply of Long Island Cares-The Harry Chapin

Food Bank; the organization that provides hunger relief for struggling families in Nassau and Suffol counties. Collection boxes will be set up all Labor Day weekend long, September 1st through September 3rd at Strong’s Marine, conveniently located along

I like being busy. It makes time go by faster, and gives you a sense of productivity otherwise lost on being complacent. And this summer has certainly been a busy one. The only problem is when you pause just long enough to look at the calendar and realize – it’s almost over. Labor Day is just around the corner and, while fall is technically over three weeks away, we all know that everyone’s mental clocks reset the second the last “official” barbeque of the season is over. Back to school, back from vacation… quick, close the pool and pack up the lawn chairs! Stick a fork in summer – it’s done. On the one hand, I would love to squeeze in just one

more afternoon at the beach (or two or three), and, after all, a good old-fashioned grilled hot dog knows no season. Is it really time to pack up the white accessories, along with all the skirts and pastel-colored linens? But what if it’s still warm out?? Face it, transitioning isn’t easy. But on the other hand, there’s something exciting about fall too. It has its own perks and pleasures – the cool, crisp air, the upcoming Fall Festivals and Homecoming celebrations… football, postseason baseball… winery tours, pumpkin picking, Halloween… It’s definitely not all bad. Plus, it gives me an excuse to go “back to school” shopping for some new clothes! Every season arrives with

eager anticipation. But then, about halfway through, we’re already waiting for the next round. We’re impatient like that. And then we complain that time has flown by too quickly for us to fully appreciate each and every day. Can’t have it both ways. Like it or not, a new season – and a new mentality – is just around the corner. But what we choose to do with it, and how quickly we choose to react, is up to us. My calendar says we still have three and a half weeks left of summer, even more if the weather holds out. But if you’d rather dig out the boots and scarves from the back of the closet and get on line from now for Halloween candy, well that’s up to you. Just don’t complain that time is flying by too quickly.

has helped reduce costs associated with planning and implementing the programs, district officials said. The popular summer fine arts program, which typically includes musical theatre and classes for band and orchestra students, expanded its jazz band program from one to two weeks and a muchanticipated visual arts component was added,

nearly 1,400 students were immersed in arts and crafts, games, sports and trips. Several one-week sports camps, ranging from baseball to wrestling enhanced the performance of young athletes in grades 1-12. For those who preferred to give their brains a workout, Camp Invention gave participants opportunities to come up with creative solutions to real-world problems using science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), and the LEGO Robotics Camp enabled students to design and build robots. Conducted by Coach Brian Vanek, FIRST Lego League Award Winning Coach 20082012, the camp also gave students the opportunity to participate in a mock FIRST Lego League Competition.

Sulc. “Our summer programs keep students sharp and productive, and allow them to develop skills in interests that are important to them.” Through its partnership with Nassau BOCES, the district has been able to expand the number of summer programs for its residents while realizing substantial savings. The partnership qualifies the district for BOCES aid and

and receiving instruction in a more intimate setting. The art classes also offer more individualized attention in a concentrated form. The BOCES partnership was also effective in delivering academic programs at the elementary and secondary levels. At McKenna Elementary School, K-6 students from around the district were busy strengthening their math and English/language arts skills using SMART Boards and interactive computer software, while, at Berner Middle School, secondary students took advantage of a competency and Regents review classes in subjects across the curriculum. In addition to these programs, the district offered its six-week Summer Recreation programs at each elementary school where

offering students the opportunity to explore drawing and painting, 3 dimensional art, and printmaking and collage. Of the 219 enrolled in fine arts programs, 89 took visual arts classes, an indicator that these programs will likely continue next year. Jessica Wyman, band director and summer fine arts coordinator, said, “This year we offered smaller, shorter classes to accommodate parents’ schedules, which enabled them to enroll their children in multiple classes. Our hope is to expand the program further to include instruction in piano or guitar.” Wyman said the band and orchestra classes provide opportunities that students may not normally get during the school year, such as performing solos or duets

My Hope Chest, a Florida-based non-profit, is proud to introduce the Breast Reconstruction Awareness Ribbon, the first ribbon to support uninsured and underinsured breast cancer survivors. This new ribbon speaks to the

New Ribbon To Support closure and a new wholeness allowing a woman to put the disease behind her at last. “The traditional ‘pink ribbon’ has branded breast cancer ‘awareness, education and research’ but overlooks a huge population of underserved survivors that live with scars and a constant reminder of the disease,” founder Alisa Savoretti said. “There are hundreds of breast cancer groups in America focused on prevention and finding a cure, while the need for breast reconstruction has flown under the

radar of the ‘pink ribbon.’” The colors in the breast reconstruction ribbon transition and transform, just like the survivors My Hope Chest helps to become whole again. The ribbon goes from pink - the original breast cancer color, to white - known as the “light” or the power of healing. The white blends to yellow, the color of hope, sunshine and new beginnings. The Breast Reconstruction Awareness Ribbon s y m b o l i z e s transformation and

closure from the disease. My Hope Chest hopes this new symbol will help others recognize this need and shine the light on this epidemic for thousands who have sacrificed a piece of themselves to save their life. Founded in 2003 by Alisa Savoretti, My Hope Chest services pick up where other breast cancer organizations leave off providing “final step of breast cancer treatment” and helping women become whole again. Savoretti knows from first-hand experience how breast

reconstruction after cancer helps restore not only the body but also transforms and heals the mind and spirit. She founded the organization after her own struggle with breast cancer. About My Hope Chest My Hope Chest is a national non-profit organization that provides breast reconstruction for uninsured and underprivileged breast cancer survivors. I am outraged! It is beyond comprehension that one of our Long Island animal shelters would kill 15 cats in one day, yet that is exactly what happened at the Smithtown Animal Shelter. Unfortunately, by the time I started receiving tips about the cats, it was too late - they were already dead. I called and spoke with shelter director George Beatty, who confirmed that the cats had been killed. I’m sorry to tell you he was less than polite on a personal level, and also mumbled something about some of the cats being there for two years or more and unadoptable, which makes this even more horrible. Imagine the sense of terror and betrayal these poor little beings felt as a needle was jabbed into them and they felt their lives draining away! I want you to know Readers, that I asked EVERY rescue organization I know of and NOT ONE was contacted by the Smithtown Shelter or George Beatty and asked to take even one cat.

As a matter of fact, here’s what some of them had to say: “Not a good shelter at all”...“I was never contacted by the Town of Smithtown Animal Shelter in regards to rescuing any cats at the shelter”...“It’s unfortunate that shelters here on LI still resort to killing rather than reaching out for help.” Readers, I have made it known to shelter director Beatty that I would post pictures and write stories about animals at the shelter, but he has never submitted one picture. I have featured blind ten year-old cats, crippled animals, deaf animals...and our readers have always come forward and adopted. There is absolutely no excuse for not reaching out in every way possible to save the lives of these cats. This is an example of the very worst and least progressive in animal sheltering. By the way, Readers, I also reached out to Smithtown Councilman Robert Creighton, who I was told was the town “animal shelter liaison.” I checked the Councilman’s bio and found nothing even remotely related to pets or animals in general, which would explain his less than sympathetic attitude during our phone call. Councilman

1.

Creighton did, however, take great issue when I used the words “killed” or “slaughtered.” Unbelievably, he kept “correcting” me and saying the cats were “euthanized.” So here, especially for the Councilman, is the definition of Euthanasia: the act or practice of killing or permitting the death of hopelessly sick or injured individuals (as persons or domestic animals) in a relativly painless way for reasons of mercy. Councilman Creighton also suggested I contact Supervisor Pat Vecchio, and I think that’s a great idea. Readers, if you are as upset and outraged as I am, if you feel the need to be a voice for these little voices who will never be heard again, please call Supervisor Vecchio at 631.360.7600 and let him know how you feel. After all, he can’t make the necessary corrections at the shelter if he doesn’t know you want change!
