PET’S PLACE BY SHARON HUBBARD - Sharonadoptpet@aol.com • avoiceforanimals.org
Dear Readers,
For More Information Call: 631-226-2636 - www.theneighbornewspapers.com
I am outraged! It is beyond comprehension that one of our Long Island animal shelters would kill 15 cats in one day, yet that is exactly what happened at the Smithtown Animal Shelter. Unfortunately, by the time I started receiving tips about the cats, it was too late - they were already dead. I called and spoke with shelter director George Beatty, who confirmed that the cats had been killed. I’m sorry to tell you he was less than polite on a personal level, and also mumbled something about some of the cats being there for two years or more and unadoptable, which makes this even more horrible. Imagine the sense of terror and betrayal these poor little beings felt as a needle was jabbed into them and they felt their lives draining away! I want you to know Readers, that I asked EVERY rescue organization I know of and NOT ONE was contacted by the Smithtown Shelter or George Beatty and asked to take even one cat.
As a matter of fact, here’s what some of them had to say: “Not a good shelter at all”...“I was never contacted by the Town of Smithtown Animal Shelter in regards to rescuing any cats at the shelter”...“It’s unfortunate that shelters here on LI still resort to killing rather than reaching out for help.” Readers, I have made it known to shelter director Beatty that I would post pictures and write stories about animals at the shelter, but he has never submitted one picture. I have featured blind ten year-old cats, crippled animals, deaf animals...and our readers have always come forward and adopted. There is absolutely no excuse for not reaching out in every way possible to save the lives of these cats. This is an example of the very worst and least progressive in animal sheltering. By the way, Readers, I also reached out to Smithtown Councilman Robert Creighton, who I was told was the town “animal shelter liaison.” I checked the Councilman’s bio and found nothing even remotely related to pets or animals in general, which would explain his less than sympathetic attitude during our phone call. Councilman
1.
Creighton did, however, take great issue when I used the words “killed” or “slaughtered.” Unbelievably, he kept “correcting” me and saying the cats were “euthanized.” So here, especially for the Councilman, is the definition of Euthanasia: the act or practice of killing or permitting the death of hopelessly sick or injured individuals (as persons or domestic animals) in a relativly painless way for reasons of mercy. Councilman Creighton also suggested I contact Supervisor Pat Vecchio, and I think that’s a great idea. Readers, if you are as upset and outraged as I am, if you feel the need to be a voice for these little voices who will never be heard again, please call Supervisor Vecchio at 631.360.7600 and let him know how you feel. After all, he can’t make the necessary corrections at the shelter if he doesn’t know you want change! Please visit a shelter and adopt. Remember, Your Best Friend Is Waiting...

I like being busy. It makes time go by faster, and gives you a sense of productivity otherwise lost on being complacent. And this summer has certainly been a busy one. The only problem is when you pause just long enough to look at the calendar and realize – it’s almost over. Labor Day is just around the corner and, while fall is technically over three weeks away, we all know that everyone’s mental clocks reset the second the last “official” barbeque of the season is over. Back to school, back from vacation… quick, close the pool and pack up the lawn chairs! Stick a fork in summer – it’s done. On the one hand, I would love to squeeze in just one
Fall gin s Be Classersday Thu mber e t p e S 6th
more afternoon at the beach (or two or three), and, after all, a good old-fashioned grilled hot dog knows no season. Is it really time to pack up the white accessories, along with all the skirts and pastel-colored linens? But what if it’s still warm out?? Face it, transitioning isn’t easy. But on the other hand, there’s something exciting about fall too. It has its own perks and pleasures – the cool, crisp air, the upcoming Fall Festivals and Homecoming celebrations… football, postseason baseball… winery tours, pumpkin picking, Halloween… It’s definitely not all bad. Plus, it gives me an excuse to go “back to school” shopping for some new clothes! Every season arrives with
eager anticipation. But then, about halfway through, we’re already waiting for the next round. We’re impatient like that. And then we complain that time has flown by too quickly for us to fully appreciate each and every day. Can’t have it both ways. Like it or not, a new season – and a new mentality – is just around the corner. But what we choose to do with it, and how quickly we choose to react, is up to us. My calendar says we still have three and a half weeks left of summer, even more if the weather holds out. But if you’d rather dig out the boots and scarves from the back of the closet and get on line from now for Halloween candy, well that’s up to you. Just don’t complain that time is flying by too quickly.

(NAPSI)—You may be able to find a great used car online—if you heed a few hints: • You can search millions of used cars for sale online if you go to sites like Autotrader.com and Cars.com. • To narrow your search, consider and compare price, photos of the cars and their descriptions. • Consider the seller. Is the person or company reputable? Is it a dealer or a private seller? If it’s the latter, has this person been recommended to you by someone you know and trust? • Before you buy any used car, it’s a good idea to check the vehicle’s history with a Carfax Vehicle History Report. These can help you make better decisions about used cars. Visit www.carfax.com to get a report and learn more.

items can be packed in carry-on and which are best left in checked suitcases. You can also learn size requirements for toiletries that are allowed on planes and then find properly sized items in stores.
As a final tip, remember that all carry-on gels, liquids and aerosols need to be placed in a 1-quart, single zip-top, clear plastic bag. For more information and tips, visit www.shave.com.

Sea Tow’s Automated Radio Check service also aids the U.S. Coast Guard by reducing none m e r g e n c y communications on VHF Channel 16, freeing the channel up for distress call activity. “We are happy to be able to provide the free Automated Radio Check service to local boaters and all other mariners passing through the area," said Carl Darenberg, President of
Montauk Marine Basin. “A working VHF radio is one of the most important pieces of safety equipment on any boat.” The first and only service of its kind in the U.S., Sea Tow's Automated Radio Check repurposes existing technology in an innovative way by utilizing marine operator channels that are no longer needed for voice transmissions. Automated Radio Check is broadcast via VHF channels 24-28, depending on the region.
