Sunday At The Society When the tug Gwendoline Steers left New York City at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, December 30th, 1962, the weather was fair and the water calm. By the midafternoon, however, the temperatures had dropped more than 40 degrees, and the wind had picked up to almost 60 mph. The captain of the tug contacted the Coast Guard Station at Eaton’s Neck at 4:30 p.m. to report the tug was taking on water, but her pumps were handling it. Just an hour later, the Coast Guard was unable to reach her, and the weather had deteriorated so much that they were unable to launch any rescue craft. By that evening, news reports announced she was missing, and over the subsequent days and

months, the bodies of her crewman washed ashore. All told, nine men lost their lives that day, and 50 years later, questions still remain as to the c i r c u m s t a n c e s surrounding the tragedy. On Sunday, September 9th, the Northport Historical Society will attempt to answer some of these questions when Gerard Thornton shares his PowerPoint presentation, The Wreck of the Gwendoline Steers, a look at the some of the details of the last voyage of the 98-foot tug. Mr. Thornton is the owner of a New York tugboat company and has captained ships throughout the area’s waterways for over 20 years. His presentation was created with the help
Steve Knox, the son of one of the lost crewmen, and local history author Edward Carr. It is part of an effort to memorialize the sinking of the tug with an eye toward a 50th anniversary memorial service. The program will begin at 3 p.m. at Northport Historical Society’s Museum, located at 215 Main Street in the Village of Northport. The presentation is free for members and $5 per person for non-members. The Museum’s regular hours are TuesdaysSundays from 1 to 4:30 p.m. For more information on this or other events, please call 631.757.9859 or visit the Historical Society’s website at northporthistorical.org.

Taking Time By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I like being busy. It makes time go by faster, and gives you a sense of productivity otherwise lost on being complacent. And this summer has certainly been a busy one. The only problem is when you pause just long enough to look at the calendar and realize – it’s almost over. Labor Day is just around the corner and, while fall is technically over three weeks away, we all know that everyone’s mental clocks reset the second the last “official” barbeque of the season is over. Back to school, back from vacation… quick, close the pool and pack up the lawn chairs! Stick a fork in summer – it’s done. On the one hand, I would love to squeeze in just one
jlynn@theneighbornewspapers.com www.facebook.com/instepwithjamie more afternoon at the beach (or two or three), and, after all, a good old-fashioned grilled hot dog knows no season. Is it really time to pack up the white accessories, along with all the skirts and pastel-colored linens? But what if it’s still warm out?? Face it, transitioning isn’t easy. But on the other hand, there’s something exciting about fall too. It has its own perks and pleasures – the cool, crisp air, the upcoming Fall Festivals and Homecoming celebrations… football, postseason baseball… winery tours, pumpkin picking, Halloween… It’s definitely not all bad. Plus, it gives me an excuse to go “back to school” shopping for some new clothes! Every season arrives with
eager anticipation. But then, about halfway through, we’re already waiting for the next round. We’re impatient like that. And then we complain that time has flown by too quickly for us to fully appreciate each and every day. Can’t have it both ways. Like it or not, a new season – and a new mentality – is just around the corner. But what we choose to do with it, and how quickly we choose to react, is up to us. My calendar says we still have three and a half weeks left of summer, even more if the weather holds out. But if you’d rather dig out the boots and scarves from the back of the closet and get on line from now for Halloween candy, well that’s up to you. Just don’t complain that time is flying by too quickly.

New Ribbon To Support those who desire, breast reconstruction provides closure and a new wholeness allowing a woman to put the disease behind her at last. “The traditional ‘pink ribbon’ has branded breast cancer ‘awareness, education and research’ but overlooks a huge population of underserved survivors that live with scars and a constant reminder of the disease,” founder Alisa Savoretti said. “There are hundreds
of breast cancer groups in America focused on prevention and finding a cure, while the need for breast reconstruction has flown under the radar of the ‘pink ribbon.’” The colors in the breast reconstruction ribbon transition and transform, just like the survivors My Hope Chest helps to become whole again. The ribbon goes from pink the original breast cancer color, to white - known as the “light” or the power of
healing. The white blends to yellow, the color of hope, sunshine and new beginnings. The Breast Reconstruction Awareness Ribbon symbolizes transformation and closure from the disease. My Hope Chest hopes this new symbol will help others recognize this need and shine the light on this epidemic for thousands who have sacrificed a piece of themselves to save their life.
Founded in 2003 by Alisa Savoretti, My Hope Chest services pick up where other breast cancer organizations leave off providing “final step of breast cancer treatment” and helping women become whole again. Savoretti knows from first-hand experience how breast reconstruction after cancer helps restore not only the body but also transforms and heals the mind and spirit. She founded the organization

Sister Sanaa Nadim, the Muslim Chaplain for The Interfaith Center at Stony Brook University, attended the annual Iftar dinner hosted by President Barack Obama at the White House. Iftar is the meal when Muslim families and communities gather together after sunset to break a day of fasting during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. During his remarks at the dinner, the President reflected on the importance of religious freedom and the important role Muslims have played throughout our country’s history. He talked about the extraordinary courage of Muslim and MuslimAmerican women, including Sister Sanaa. “They are faith leaders like Sanaa Nadim, one of

the first Muslim chaplains at an American college - a voice for interfaith dialogue who’s had the opportunity to meet with the Pope to discuss these issues. We’re very proud to have you here,” said President Obama, according to an official White House transcript. “It was a real honor being recognized by President Barack Obama,” said Sister Sanaa. “He truly values the religious diversity that forms the fabric of our nation. Being at the White House where our founding fathers fought many years ago for the freedoms we enjoy today, reminded me of the importance of working to build bridges between groups divided by ethnic, cultural or religious differences. We are truly blessed to have a president
who appreciates the beauty of interfaith collaboration, and I feel so lucky to have had the opportunity to have spent time with him.” Sister Sanaa established the Stony Brook Muslim Student Association and works toward its constructive growth, which was reflected by an American interfaith survey that noted Stony Brook has the largest Muslim Student Association in the nation. Her current agenda involves working with different religious and cultural organizations as well as private and public institutions to continue building bridges among different faith groups to positively enhance the image of Islam through unity and understanding.

Dear Readers,
1.
Creighton did, however, take great issue when I used the words “killed” or “slaughtered.” Unbelievably, he kept “correcting” me and saying the cats were “euthanized.” So here, especially for the Councilman, is the definition of Euthanasia: the act or practice of killing or permitting the death of hopelessly sick or injured individuals (as persons or domestic animals) in a relativly painless way for reasons of mercy. Councilman Creighton also suggested I contact Supervisor Pat Vecchio, and I think that’s a great idea. Readers, if you are as upset and outraged as I am, if you feel the need to be a voice for these little voices who will never be heard again, please call Supervisor Vecchio at 631.360.7600 and let him know how you feel. After all, he can’t make the necessary corrections at the shelter if he doesn’t know you want change! Please visit a shelter and adopt. Remember, Your Best Friend Is Waiting...

I am outraged! It is beyond comprehension that one of our Long Island animal shelters would kill 15 cats in one day, yet that is exactly what happened at the Smithtown Animal Shelter. Unfortunately, by the time I started receiving tips about the cats, it was too late - they were already dead. I called and spoke with shelter director George Beatty, who confirmed that the cats had been killed. I’m sorry to tell you he was less than polite on a personal level, and also mumbled something about some of the cats being there for two years or more and unadoptable, which makes this even more horrible. Imagine the sense of terror and betrayal these poor little beings felt as a needle was jabbed into them and they felt their lives draining away! I want you to know Readers, that I asked EVERY rescue organization I know of and NOT ONE was contacted by the Smithtown Shelter or George Beatty and asked to take even one cat.
As a matter of fact, here’s what some of them had to say: “Not a good shelter at all”...“I was never contacted by the Town of Smithtown Animal Shelter in regards to rescuing any cats at the shelter”...“It’s unfortunate that shelters here on LI still resort to killing rather than reaching out for help.” Readers, I have made it known to shelter director Beatty that I would post pictures and write stories about animals at the shelter, but he has never submitted one picture. I have featured blind ten year-old cats, crippled animals, deaf animals...and our readers have always come forward and adopted. There is absolutely no excuse for not reaching out in every way possible to save the lives of these cats. This is an example of the very worst and least progressive in animal sheltering. By the way, Readers, I also reached out to Smithtown Councilman Robert Creighton, who I was told was the town “animal shelter liaison.” I checked the Councilman’s bio and found nothing even remotely related to pets or animals in general, which would explain his less than sympathetic attitude during our phone call. professionals such as doctors, nurses, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, dentists and pharmacists can help smokers by bringing up the subject with patients. To assist with that, Legacy and Pfizer have developed a downloadable, userfriendly guide for health care providers to help them discuss smoking and tobacco use with their patients. Here are hints to help: • Talk openly about smoking. Ask every patient if they smoke. This may open the door to successful intervention. • Be positive and encouraging. Smokers are often dealing with shame or fear of quitting. Congratulate the smoker on the decision to quit and reiterate how you are there to help them on their journey. • Encourage smokers not to give up. Smoking is a chronic, relapsing medical condition; the average smoker tries to quit 6/9 times in their
lifetime. Remind smokers that quitting is difficult, but can be attainable. • Make sure smokers understand smoking for what it really is: a treatable medical condition. • Suggest patients consider evidence-based treatments, such as overthe-counter or prescription medications, and refer them to counseling to help them quit. Patients can call the national toll-free quitline, (800)-QUIT-NOW, for free counseling or seek help from no-cost websites such as www.BecomeAnEX.org. • Arrange follow-up contact as necessary to try to prevent relapse. More than 45 million Americans currently smoke and an estimated 70 percent of them want to quit, but lack the tools to do so. Committing to quit is the crucial first step toward becoming smoke free. Speaking with your health care provider can help you during this process.
GROWN ON LONG ISLAND - On Friday, August 17th, Suffolk County farmers celebrated Grown On Long Island Day, an event to recognize and show appreciation for Long Island’s role in the agricultural industry. Helping Your Pets Take A Bite Out Of Poor Health (NAPSI)—Dog owners who think a dog’s mouth is cleaner than a human’s are barking up the wrong tree—and they are not alone. In fact, according to a recent survey, many pet owners have beliefs about their pet’s health that are not accurate or grounded in science. For example, the study—commissioned by the Greenies brand, the maker of dental chews and treats for pets-found that almost half of pet owners believe that dogs’ mouths are cleaner than humans’ and that any type of chewing is good for a dog’s teeth. It also found that about 40 percent thought it was normal for their pets to have stinky breath. About one-third of pet owners believed that a dog’s saliva was capable of curing human wounds. “There is a lot of misinformation out there regarding a pet’s oral health,” said veterinary dental expert Dr. Jan
Bellows, incoming president of the American Veterinary Dental College. “Dogs’ mouths are certainly not cleaner than a human’s. Dogs often carry a variety of germs and bacteria in their mouths that stem from buildup of plaque and tartar that can potentially make humans sick through contact with saliva.” The Right Kind of Chewing “Many pet owners also believe that any type of chewing is good for their dogs, but tooth fractures are a common occurrence in pets because teeth can only withstand a certain amount of pressure from hard objects before they break. When pets chew on inflexible items, such as bones, ice cubes or nylon toys, it can put them at risk for breaking a tooth. And while smelly breath in pets is common, pet owners who believe this is normal may be missing the signs of poor oral health or potential dental
disease,” Dr. Bellows said. A Healthy Mouth Is Key A healthy mouth is essential to the overall well-being of pets, but misguided information about pet oral health can affect more than just your pet’s mouth. For proper pet oral health, veterinarians advise daily brushing or giving of Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC)?approved dental treats, and at least annual oral exams by a veterinarian with professional cleanings as recommended. “Pet owners who are knowledgeable about their furry companions’ oral health will avoid the pitfalls of commonly held myths and enable the best care for everyone’s wellbeing,” said Dr. Bellows. To learn more about commonly accepted pet oral health myths and how to keep your pets’ mouths healthy, visit www.Facebook.com/green ies.

(NAPSI)—To help protect you and your family from tobaccorelated death and disease, researchers from Legacy®, a national public health organization dedicated to building a world where anyone can quit smoking, recommend two actions: stop smoking or never start. If you do smoke or use tobacco, speak to your doctor about quitting smoking. A survey of more than 3,146 adults in the U.S. conducted by Legacy discovered that more than one in 10 smokers have concealed their smoking status from a health care provider—nearly half of them stated it was because they are ashamed that they smoke. Another reason for not disclosing this important information to a medical professional: two-thirds surveyed who did not disclose their smoking status reported not wanting to be lectured about smoking. Fortunately, health care
