LINDY’S TAXI
here was a sea of people helping Angela’s House at their recent annual Fishing Fundraiser. More than 200 people came to support this event, where the goal is to raise money for medically frail children by setting sail out of Captree State Park. They filled three boats - the Fish Tale, Yankee III and Dixie II. This fishing trip was a great way to help medically frail children and have a fun evening at the same time! Thanks to all who came out to show their support.

You may remember last year’s Miss Long Island Teen 2012, Sabrina Mastrangelo of Bellmore, went on to win that 2012 New York State title, and Long Island is certainly hoping for a repeat this year with their two newest queens! “The inner and outer beauty of the 2013 queens is certain to make Long Island proud this year,” says Lori Thomas, LI Pageant Executive Director. “Their commitment to volunteering all throughout the LI community and their passion to be the best role models they can be is a

Taking Time
Common Car Seat Mistakes Parents Should Avoid driving a mile from home, so my son doesn’t need to be secured in his car seat since it’s a short trip.” Reminder: You should buckle up properly on every trip—no matter the distance—especially since most crashes occur close to home. Shortcut: “I’m picking up several kids after soccer practice and I’m going to put my 8-year-old daughter in the front seat so all the children can fit into the car.” Reminder: All children under age 13 are safest when riding in the backseat and properly restrained in a car seat, booster seat or seat belt. Shortcut: “We will be driving more people in our car than we have seat belts. Since it’s a short trip, it’s not a big deal for someone to ride on another person’s lap.” Reminder: It’s never safe to ride on another person’s lap. Each
passenger should be properly restrained on every trip. Shortcut: “My son is 10 years old and 4’6” tall. He’s big enough to use a seat belt now.” Reminder: The American Academy of Pediatrics now recommends children continue to use beltpositioning booster seats until they are 4’9” and the seat belt fits properly. Help For Parents Fortunately, AAA experts are available to help parents with car seat installation. Visit an AAA club, go to www.seatcheck.org or call (866) SEATCHECK [(866) 732-8243]. eager anticipation. But then, about halfway through, we’re already waiting for the next round. We’re impatient like that. And then we complain that time has flown by too quickly for us to fully appreciate each and every day. Can’t have it both ways. Like it or not, a new season – and a new mentality – is just around the corner. But what we choose to do with it, and how quickly we choose to react, is up to us. My calendar says we still have three and a half weeks left of summer, even more if the weather holds out. But if you’d rather dig out the boots and scarves from the back of the closet and get on line from now for Halloween candy, well that’s up to you. Just don’t complain that time is flying by too quickly.

(NAPSI)—Parents of young children need to be better educated in order to avoid making potentially dangerous safety mistakes when they are on the go. The Problem Automobile crashes remain a leading cause of death for children and it’s important that parents consistently and correctly use the appropriate car seat to keep their child passengers safe. Many parents may be unknowingly endangering their children as three out of four car seats are not used correctly, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Some Answers Busy parents and caregivers may be tempted by safety shortcuts when transporting children. AAA offers simple reminders to protect parents’ most precious cargo. Shortcut: “I’m only
more afternoon at the beach (or two or three), and, after all, a good old-fashioned grilled hot dog knows no season. Is it really time to pack up the white accessories, along with all the skirts and pastel-colored linens? But what if it’s still warm out?? Face it, transitioning isn’t easy. But on the other hand, there’s something exciting about fall too. It has its own perks and pleasures – the cool, crisp air, the upcoming Fall Festivals and Homecoming celebrations… football, postseason baseball… winery tours, pumpkin picking, Halloween… It’s definitely not all bad. Plus, it gives me an excuse to go “back to school” shopping for some new clothes! Every season arrives with

I like being busy. It makes time go by faster, and gives you a sense of productivity otherwise lost on being complacent. And this summer has certainly been a busy one. The only problem is when you pause just long enough to look at the calendar and realize – it’s almost over. Labor Day is just around the corner and, while fall is technically over three weeks away, we all know that everyone’s mental clocks reset the second the last “official” barbeque of the season is over. ( N A P S I ) — Smartphones make life so much more convenient, but if they are lost or stolen, your personal information may be exposed. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to protect your information. Here are a few tips from CTIA—the international w i r e l e s s telecommunications association: Take steps to prevent theft. Before a phone is lost or stolen, protect your information by using passcodes and applications. Passcodes—Use a passcode to make it harder for a thief to access your smartphone if it is lost or stolen. Apps—Use apps that can track or locate a lost or stolen smartphone. Some apps may also enable you to remotely wipe a device or emit a
loud alarm. If your device is lost or stolen, contact your wireless provider immediately to suspend your service. CTIA and its members always want America’s wireless users to be safe. Together with the Federal Communications Commission and major city police chiefs, CTIA and participating wireless companies have agreed to take steps to help protect consumers and their private information on smartphones. Paramount to preventing smartphone thefts is educating consumers about the tools and features that carriers, device manufacturers and app creators already offer. By using these passcodes and apps, consumers can protect themselves and their personal information on their

Intrepid Performance
For the third year in a row, the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 22-7 Band from Ft. Salonga provided the musical entertainment at the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum on Sunday August 5th, in honor of Coast Guard Appreciation Day. The performance immediately followed the annual cutting of the cake, which commemorated the 222nd birthday of the U.S. Coast Guard. The oldest and youngest members of Coast Guard Sector were present as Captain Gordon Loebl, Captain of the Port
of NY and NJ, sliced through the cake with his ceremonial sword. Captain Loebl personally thanked and complimented the Band on their performance as well as for the Band’s performance six weeks earlier at the Change of Command where Captain Loebl was made Commanding Officer for Coast Guard Sector New York. The Band performed two musical sets. Each set was begun with the Coast Guard song Semper Paratus, followed by a variety of classic marches,
military theme songs, and nautical tunes. The Band also performed an abridged version of Dvorak’s New World Symphony and Lassus Trombone, a popular trombone rag written by Henry Fillmore. The program closed with the Stars & Stripes Forever, the official march of the United States. The Band celebrates its fifth birthday this year. It has doubled its membership from its initial 22 plank owners to its present roster of 44.

They also welcomed Dr. Joy Bulger from Brookhaven Lab for a joint lecture with Dr. Joe Valero on depression and the brain. Dr. Rubman noted, “I am so proud of the Ammerman Campus’ Psi Beta Chapter. The students in this chapter have shown an interest and ability in Psychology that is refreshing and that goes well beyond the classroom to extend a helping hand to the community at large.”
Volunteer Retires
For the past twentythree years Shirley Borrillo has kept the senior citizens of Smithtown moving! Shirley originally joined the Smithtown Senior Citizen Center as a participant because of her love of dance. She quickly became an important part of the Center as a volunteer and teacher of both exercise classes and line dancing – twice a week for over twenty years! Not only did Shirley donate her time and
energy but she also choreographed her own line dances and created videos and music CD’s for the classes she taught. Her talent also led her to participate in the Center’s yearly Talent and Fashion Shows. A group of Shirley’s friends and students recently gathered at the Senior Center to honor and thank her for her many contributions. A proclamation from the Town of Smithtown presented by Supervisor Vecchio was read to
Shirley thanking her for her years of service. According to Laura Greif, Program Director at the Smithtown Senior Citizen Department, “Shirley’s passion inspired countless seniors to get and stay active. She will be sorely missed and we all wish her well in her retirement.” For more information about the Smithtown Senior Citizen Department come visit us at 420 Middle Country Road in Smithtown, call 631.360.7616 or visit www.smithtowninfo.com.
New Radio Host Station Sea Tow Services International, Inc., the nation's leading professional marine assistance provider, announces that Montauk Marine Basin is now a Sea Tow Automated Radio Check host station. Boaters in Long Island’s Montauk Harbor and the surrounding areas of Block Island Sound can take advantage of this vital boating safety service free of charge by calling Channel 26 on their VHF radio. Sea Tow’s Automated Radio Check service, which is provided in association with MariTEL, lets boaters quickly and easily check that their vessel’s VHF radio is in good working order. To use the service, they simply tune the VHF to
the local Automated Radio Check channel, key the mic, and request a radio check. They will hear an automated response and their call will be played back to them, confirming that the radio is operational and allowing them to assess transmission strength, a crucial safety check. Sea Tow’s Automated Radio Check service also aids the U.S. Coast Guard by reducing none m e r g e n c y communications on VHF Channel 16, freeing the channel up for distress call activity. “We are happy to be able to provide the free Automated Radio Check service to local boaters and all other mariners passing through the area," said Carl Darenberg, President of
Montauk Marine Basin. “A working VHF radio is one of the most important pieces of safety equipment on any boat.” The first and only service of its kind in the U.S., Sea Tow's Automated Radio Check repurposes existing technology in an innovative way by utilizing marine operator channels that are no longer needed for voice transmissions. Automated Radio Check is broadcast via VHF channels 24-28, depending on the region. To find the dedicated Automated Radio Check channel in a particular area, all a boater needs to do is visit w w w. s e a t o w. c o m / a r c , enter their city, state or zip code, and find their location on the interactive map.

End-Of-Summer Food Drive Thirteen year-old Hampton/NYC resident, Grant Andreas had an idea to collect the leftover food from the summer months to feed the struggling families of Long Island. Thanks to help of Strong’s Marine and Hall Lane Movin & Storage, Move For Hunger is turning Grant’s idea into a reality wit the first annual Hamptons End of Summer Food Drive. Over 320,000 people on Long Island, including 118,000 children, live on incomes that put them at risk for hunger. The collections from th End of Summer Food Drive will directly benefit the food supply of Long Island Cares-The Harry Chapin Food Bank; the organization that provides hunger relief for struggling families in Nassau and Suffol counties. Collection boxes will be set up all Labor Day

Dear Readers,
For More Information Call: 631-226-2636 - www.theneighbornewspapers.com
I am outraged! It is beyond comprehension that one of our Long Island animal shelters would kill 15 cats in one day, yet that is exactly what happened at the Smithtown Animal Shelter. Unfortunately, by the time I started receiving tips about the cats, it was too late - they were already dead. I called and spoke with shelter director George Beatty, who confirmed that the cats had been killed. I’m sorry to tell you he was less than polite on a personal level, and also mumbled something about some of the cats being there for two years or more and unadoptable, which makes this even more horrible. Imagine the sense of terror and betrayal these poor little beings felt as a needle was jabbed into them and they felt their lives draining away! I want you to know Readers, that I asked EVERY rescue organization I know of and NOT ONE was contacted by the Smithtown Shelter or George Beatty and asked to take even one cat.
As a matter of fact, here’s what some of them had to say: “Not a good shelter at all”...“I was never contacted by the Town of Smithtown Animal Shelter in regards to rescuing any cats at the shelter”...“It’s unfortunate that shelters here on LI still resort to killing rather than reaching out for help.” Readers, I have made it known to shelter director Beatty that I would post pictures and write stories about animals at the shelter, but he has never submitted one picture. I have featured blind ten year-old cats, crippled animals, deaf animals...and our readers have always come forward and adopted. There is absolutely no excuse for not reaching out in every way possible to save the lives of these cats. This is an example of the very worst and least progressive in animal sheltering. By the way, Readers, I also reached out to Smithtown Councilman Robert Creighton, who I was told was the town “animal shelter liaison.” I checked the Councilman’s bio and found nothing even remotely related to pets or animals in general, which would explain his less than sympathetic attitude during our phone call. Councilman
1.
Creighton did, however, take great issue when I used the words “killed” or “slaughtered.” Unbelievably, he kept “correcting” me and saying the cats were “euthanized.” So here, especially for the Councilman, is the definition of Euthanasia: the act or practice of killing or permitting the death of hopelessly sick or injured individuals (as persons or domestic animals) in a relativly painless way for reasons of mercy. Councilman Creighton also suggested I contact Supervisor Pat Vecchio, and I think that’s a great idea. Readers, if you are as upset and outraged as I am, if you feel the need to be a voice for these little voices who will never be heard again, please call Supervisor Vecchio at 631.360.7600 and let him know how you feel. After all, he can’t make the necessary corrections at the shelter if he doesn’t know you want change! Please visit a shelter and adopt. Remember, Your Best Friend Is Waiting...

prevention and finding a cure, while the need for breast reconstruction has flown under the radar of the ‘pink ribbon.’” The colors in the breast reconstruction ribbon transition and transform, just like the survivors My Hope Chest helps to become whole again. The ribbon goes from pink the original breast cancer color, to white - known as the “light” or the power of healing. The white blends to yellow, the color of hope, sunshine and new beginnings. The Breast Reconstruction Awareness Ribbon symbolizes transformation and closure from the disease. My Hope Chest hopes this new symbol will help others recognize this need and shine the light on this epidemic for thousands who have sacrificed a piece of themselves to save their life. Founded in 2003 by Alisa Savoretti, My Hope Chest services pick up where other breast cancer
organizations leave off providing “final step of breast cancer treatment” and helping women become whole again. Savoretti knows from first-hand experience how breast reconstruction after cancer helps restore not only the body but also transforms and heals the mind and spirit. She founded the organization after her own struggle with breast cancer. About My Hope Chest My Hope Chest is a national non-profit organization that provides breast reconstruction for uninsured and underprivileged breast cancer survivors. the first Muslim chaplains at an American college - a voice for interfaith dialogue who’s had the opportunity to meet with the Pope to discuss these issues. We’re very proud to have you here,” said President Obama, according to an official White House transcript. “It was a real honor being recognized by President Barack Obama,” said Sister Sanaa. “He truly values the religious diversity that forms the fabric of our nation. Being at the White House where our founding fathers fought many years ago for the freedoms we enjoy today, reminded me of the importance of working to build bridges between groups divided by ethnic, cultural or religious differences. We are truly blessed to have a president
who appreciates the beauty of interfaith collaboration, and I feel so lucky to have had the opportunity to have spent time with him.” Sister Sanaa established the Stony Brook Muslim Student Association and works toward its constructive growth, which was reflected by an American interfaith survey that noted Stony Brook has the largest Muslim Student Association in the nation. Her current agenda involves working with different religious and cultural organizations as well as private and public institutions to continue building bridges among different faith groups to positively enhance the image of Islam through unity and understanding.

My Hope Chest, a Florida-based non-profit, is proud to introduce the Breast Reconstruction Awareness Ribbon, the first ribbon to support uninsured and underinsured breast cancer survivors. This new ribbon speaks to the r e s t o r a t i o n , transformation and the completion from the cancer journey that many survivors seek through reconstructive surgery after mastectomy. For those who desire, breast reconstruction provides closure and a new wholeness allowing a woman to put the disease behind her at last. “The traditional ‘pink ribbon’ has branded breast cancer ‘awareness, education and research’ but overlooks a huge population of underserved survivors that live with scars and a constant reminder of the disease,” founder Alisa Savoretti said. “There are hundreds of breast cancer groups in America focused on

WOUNDED WARRIOR VISIT - Suffolk County Legislator Steve Stern joined the Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team, which is composed of nearly 20 young, competitive athletic veterans and active-duty soldiers who have lost limbs while serving our great nation. The WWAST recently visited Suffolk County as part of a nation-wide tour to raise awareness of the sacrifices and resiliency of our military and demonstrate that through extensive rehabilitation and training amputee athletes are able to perform at the highest level. WWAST competes through exhibition and celebrity softball games.

Why Shoppers Want One-Owner Vehicles (NAPSI)—One is the luckiest number when it comes to pre-owned cars—one owner, that is. Many car buyers prefer cars that have previously had only one owner. Shoppers tend to pay more for these cars because they think they are more reliable and a better value—and they
may be right. While cars with multiple owners can be a good deal, one-owner cars generally tend to have better trade-in value. Either way, when it comes to buying used cars, the more you know, the better decisions you can make. It’s important to find out all you can about the car’s ownership
history. The two easiest ways to do that are to get an inspection and check the Carfax Vehicle History Report. You can also look for the Carfax 1-Owner Vehicle symbol when you shop to help identify cars with only one previous owner.
Caring For Granite Countertops ammonia—based products-or cleaners containing vinegar, lemon or orange—on your granite countertops. Avoid abrasive cleaners such as dry or soft cleansers. Don’t use cleaning products that contain acid such as bathroom, grout, or tub and tile cleaners. Specialty granite cleaners can be used, but they can be expensive. There’s a way to stretch your dollars. • Mind your budget: JAWS Glass & Hard Surface Cleaner (www.jawscleans.com) cleans granite countertops, stainless steel appliances, glass and even your flat-screen TV. It’s also non-toxic and costs less than most other cleaners because each
JAWS product is actually two bottles in one. (The cartridge refill is attached to the bottle.) There are also some other basic preventive measures you can take to protect your granite countertops: • Use coasters: Place a coaster under all glasses, particularly those containing alcohol or citrus juices that can etch or dull the surface of many stone countertops. • Use trivets or mats: They’ll protect your granite countertop from hot dishes and help avoid scratches. Granite countertops can really add spark to a kitchen or bathroom. Proper care will keep them looking beautiful.
GROWN ON LONG ISLAND - On Friday, August 17th, Suffolk County farmers celebrated Grown On Long Island Day, an event to recognize and show appreciation for Long Island’s role in the agricultural industry. Pictured: Assemblyman Dan Losquadro, Long Island Farm Bureau President Frank Beyrodt and his two children, Long Island Farm Bureau Executive Director Joe Gregela, Assemblyman Dean Murray and New York State Senator Ken LaValle.
Setting The Stage (NAPSI)—With a flood of real estate listings on the market, sellers continuously search for ways to stand out. The process is called staging. Done correctly, it can make a house look bigger, brighter, cleaner, warmer and make homebuyers want to buy it. To help, here are some tips: • Curb Appeal: The exterior of the house is the first thing potential buyers see; make sure it’s bright, clean and inviting.
• Clean: Clean from top to bottom, getting rid of clutter and organizing the space. Don’t forget the ceilings and fans. • Brighten Up: Do what you can to help buyers envision living in the space. Make sure windows are streak free. Hide personal pictures. Instead, decorate with fresh flowers. • Living Space: Choose neutral tones for the walls and furniture. Slipcovers are an inexpensive way to spruce up old furniture. Add pillows for pops of

(NAPSI)—Granite countertops are the most popular option available when it comes to kitchen or bathroom remodeling. They look great, they’re durable, but they can also cost thousands of dollars. Granite requires special care and attention because it’s a natural stone. Here are a few tips to help you protect your investment: • Seal your countertops: According to the Marble Institute of America, an industry group, granite countertops should be sealed so that the stone is more resistant to dirt and spills. Check with the manufacturer or retailer about the best kind of sealer to use on food preparation areas. • Be careful what you clean with: Never use
color. • Dining Area: Set your dining room or kitchen table. Use brightly colored plates and napkins. • Master Bedroom: You can make the space appear larger by limiting furniture to essentials; a bed and dresser will do. Working closely with a licensed real estate agent can often help sellers achieve the best results. For more staging and DIY tips, visit www.Homes.com's Idea Gallery.
