I like being busy. It makes time go by faster, and gives you a sense of productivity otherwise lost on being complacent. And this summer has certainly been a busy one. The only problem is when you pause just long enough to look at the calendar and realize – it’s almost over. Labor Day is just around the corner and, while fall is technically over three weeks away, we all know that everyone’s mental clocks reset the second the last “official” barbeque of the season is over. Back to school, back from vacation… quick, close the pool and pack up the lawn chairs! Stick a fork in summer – it’s done. On the one hand, I would love to squeeze in just one
more afternoon at the beach (or two or three), and, after all, a good old-fashioned grilled hot dog knows no season. Is it really time to pack up the white accessories, along with all the skirts and pastel-colored linens? But what if it’s still warm out?? Face it, transitioning isn’t easy. But on the other hand, there’s something exciting about fall too. It has its own perks and pleasures – the cool, crisp air, the upcoming Fall Festivals and Homecoming celebrations… football, postseason baseball… winery tours, pumpkin picking, Halloween… It’s definitely not all bad. Plus, it gives me an excuse to go “back to school” shopping for some new clothes! Every season arrives with
eager anticipation. But then, about halfway through, we’re already waiting for the next round. We’re impatient like that. And then we complain that time has flown by too quickly for us to fully appreciate each and every day. Can’t have it both ways. Like it or not, a new season – and a new mentality – is just around the corner. But what we choose to do with it, and how quickly we choose to react, is up to us. My calendar says we still have three and a half weeks left of summer, even more if the weather holds out. But if you’d rather dig out the boots and scarves from the back of the closet and get on line from now for Halloween candy, well that’s up to you. Just don’t complain that time is flying by too quickly.

Sisters Amanda and Madison Engrassia, both students in Barbara Tubello’s class at East Islip Middle School, ran their own neighborhood collection this year to donate items to American troops in Afghanistan. One man who was particularly touched by the Engrassia sisters’ efforts was Terence D’Alesandro, a gunnery sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps whose unit had been the recipient of
gotten mail in weeks. I’ve been ‘that Marine’ a bunch of times myself, and you sit down on your sleeping bag and open up the package, and you feel like someone back home ‘gets it.’ It’s not about the war or why we are there…it’s about the Marines on the ground, five thousand miles away from home, who are simply doing their job in brutal conditions. These girls reminded them of sanity, normalcy and what America is really about. God bless them and all of those Americans who can separate the war from the warrior and who, whether they know someone over there or not, can spend time doing something for an anonymous Marine just because they care about making him smile in a combat zone.”

There are environmental reports due in September, but not all are for school projects. September 15th marks the main date for the 2012 International Coastal Cleanup, sponsored locally by Keep Islip Clean. As the name implies, this special series of cleanups is an international event and is unique because it involves not only picking up but also recording the type of litter found near waterways. The data is analyzed by the American Littoral Society and the Ocean Conservancy to track global pollution trends in the marine environment. “This is an excellent
activity for people interested in the health of waterways. It takes a bit more work than a regular litter cleanup because data cards are part of the activity but it’s a way to be part of a global effort that will also improve our own coastal area,” said Nancy Cochran, Executive Director of Keep Islip Clean. KIC provides all data collection materials, instructions and supplies. Volunteers interested in participating can register their group through the KIC office, which can be reached at 631.224.2627 o r keepislipclean@optonline. net.

freedom and the important role Muslims have played throughout our country’s history. He talked about the extraordinary courage of Muslim and MuslimAmerican women, including Sister Sanaa. “They are faith leaders like Sanaa Nadim, one of the first Muslim chaplains
at an American college - a voice for interfaith dialogue who’s had the opportunity to meet with the Pope to discuss these issues. We’re very proud to have you here,” said President Obama, according to an official White House transcript. “It was a real honor being recognized by
President Barack Obama,” said Sister Sanaa. “He truly values the religious diversity that forms the fabric of our nation. Being at the White House where our founding fathers fought many years ago for the freedoms we enjoy today, reminded me of the importance of working to build bridges between
groups divided by ethnic, cultural or religious differences. We are truly blessed to have a president who appreciates the beauty of interfaith collaboration, and I feel so lucky to have had the opportunity to have spent time with him.” Sister Sanaa established the Stony Brook Muslim Student Association and works toward its constructive growth, which was reflected by an American interfaith survey that noted Stony Brook has the largest Muslim Student Association in the nation. Her current agenda involves working with different religious and cultural organizations as well as private and public institutions to continue building bridges among different faith groups to positively enhance the image of Islam through unity and understanding.

Dear Readers,

I am outraged! It is beyond comprehension that one of our Long Island animal shelters would kill 15 cats in one day, yet that is exactly what happened at the Smithtown Animal Shelter. Unfortunately, by the time I started receiving tips about the cats, it was too late - they were already dead. I called and spoke with shelter director George Beatty, who confirmed that the cats had been killed. I’m sorry to tell you he was less than polite on a personal level, and also mumbled something about some of the cats being there for two years or more and unadoptable, which makes this even more horrible. Imagine the sense of terror and betrayal these poor little beings felt as a needle was jabbed into them and they felt their lives draining away! I want you to know Readers, that I asked EVERY rescue organization I know of and NOT ONE was contacted by the Smithtown Shelter or George Beatty and asked to take even one cat.
As a matter of fact, here’s what some of them had to say: “Not a good shelter at all”...“I was never contacted by the Town of Smithtown Animal Shelter in regards to rescuing any cats at the shelter”...“It’s unfortunate that shelters here on LI still resort to killing rather than reaching out for help.” Readers, I have made it known to shelter director Beatty that I would post pictures and write stories about animals at the shelter, but he has never submitted one picture. I have featured blind ten year-old cats, crippled animals, deaf animals...and our readers have always come forward and adopted. There is absolutely no excuse for not reaching out in every way possible to save the lives of these cats. This is an example of the very worst and least progressive in animal sheltering. By the way, Readers, I also reached out to Smithtown Councilman Robert Creighton, who I was told was the town “animal shelter liaison.” I checked the Councilman’s bio and found nothing even remotely related to pets or animals in general, which would explain his less than sympathetic attitude during our phone call. Councilman

Creighton did, however, take great issue when I used the words “killed” or “slaughtered.” Unbelievably, he kept “correcting” me and saying the cats were “euthanized.” So here, especially for the Councilman, is the definition of Euthanasia: the act or practice of killing or permitting the death of hopelessly sick or injured individuals (as persons or domestic animals) in a relativly painless way for reasons of mercy. Councilman Creighton also suggested I contact Supervisor Pat Vecchio, and I think that’s a great idea. Readers, if you are as upset and outraged as I am, if you feel the need to be a voice for these little voices who will never be heard again, please call Supervisor Vecchio at 631.360.7600 and let him know how you feel. After all, he can’t make the necessary corrections at the shelter if he doesn’t know you want change! Please visit a shelter and adopt. Remember, Your Best Friend Is Waiting...

End-Of-Summer Food Drive Thirteen year-old Hampton/NYC resident, Grant Andreas had an idea to collect the leftover food from the summer months to feed the struggling families of Long Island. Thanks to help of Strong’s Marine and Hall Lane Movin & Storage, Move For Hunger is turning Grant’s idea into a reality wit the first annual Hamptons End of Summer Food Drive. Over 320,000 people on Long Island, including 118,000 children, live on incomes that put them at risk for hunger. The collections from th End of Summer Food Drive will directly benefit the food supply of Long Island Cares-The Harry Chapin Food Bank; the organization that provides hunger relief for struggling families in Nassau and Suffol counties. Collection boxes will be set up all Labor Day
weekend long, September 1st through September 3rd at Strong’s Marine, conveniently located along County Road 39. Area residents are urged to set aside an nonperishable food items and drop off the donations during the weekend. Any person that makes a donation will automatically be entered to win a Stand Up Paddleboard courtesy of Sunrise to Sunse Surf and Sport. Hall Lane Moving and Storage, the local partner of Move For Hunger, has offered to provide the necessary boxes and deliver all donation directly to the Long Island Cares-The Harry Chapin Food Bank. “We’re very excited to once again partner with our friends at Move for Hunger for this very creative and exciting event,” said Paule Pachter, Executive Director of
Long Island Cares, Inc. “We’re very hopeful tha many people in the Hampton communities will come by and help th regional food bank in an our efforts to feed and support our neighbor in need. About Move For Hunger Move For Hunger is a non-profit organization that works with relocation companies across the country to pick up unwanted, unopene food from those who are relocating and deliver it to local food banks across the country. among U.S. men and women, respectively. Women over 40 should

stages). If you're a man over 50, ask your doctor about getting screened for
prostate cancer. Encourage your partner to get screened. For more
