Smartphone Safety: What You Need To Know (NAPSI)—Smartphones make life so much more convenient, but if they are lost or stolen, your personal information may be exposed. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to protect your information. Here are a few tips from CTIA—the international w i r e l e s s telecommunications association: Take steps to prevent theft. Before a phone is lost or stolen, protect your information by using passcodes and applications. Passcodes—Use a passcode to make it harder for a thief to access your smartphone if it is lost or stolen. Apps—Use apps that can track or locate a lost or stolen smartphone. Some apps may also enable you to remotely wipe a device

or emit a loud alarm. If your device is lost or stolen, contact your wireless provider immediately to suspend your service. CTIA and its members always want America’s wireless users to be safe. Together with the Federal Communications Commission and major city police chiefs, CTIA and participating wireless companies have agreed to take steps to help protect consumers and their private information on smartphones. Paramount to preventing smartphone thefts is educating consumers about the tools and features that carriers, device manufacturers and app creators already offer. By using these passcodes and apps, consumers can protect themselves and their personal information

on their wireless devices. In addition, participating carriers have agreed to implement and deploy databases to prevent thieves from reactivating stolen smartphones in the U.S. and, when appropriate, internationally. By using a smartphone’s unique identifying number, wireless providers will help prevent smartphones that are reported by their customers as stolen from being activated and/or provided service on their own networks. The U.S. wireless industry has always been dedicated to advancing public safety and enhancing the security and protection of its customers. For more information, visit www.ctia.org.

Founded in 2003 by Alisa Savoretti, My Hope Chest services pick up where other breast cancer organizations leave off providing “final step of breast cancer treatment” and helping women become whole again. Savoretti knows from first-hand experience how breast reconstruction after cancer helps restore not only the body but also transforms and heals the mind and spirit. She founded the organization after her own struggle with breast cancer. About My Hope Chest My Hope Chest is a national non-profit organization that provides breast reconstruction for uninsured and underprivileged breast cancer survivors. of breast cancer groups in America focused on prevention and finding a cure, while the need for breast reconstruction has flown under the radar of the ‘pink ribbon.’” The colors in the breast reconstruction ribbon transition and transform, just like the survivors My Hope Chest helps to become whole again. The ribbon goes from pink the original breast cancer color, to white - known as the “light” or the power of healing. The white blends to yellow, the color of hope, sunshine and new beginnings. The Breast Reconstruction Awareness Ribbon symbolizes transformation and closure from the disease. My Hope Chest hopes this new symbol will help others recognize this need and shine the light on this epidemic for thousands who have sacrificed a piece of themselves to save their life.

My Hope Chest, a Florida-based non-profit, is proud to introduce the Breast Reconstruction Awareness Ribbon, the first ribbon to support uninsured and underinsured breast cancer survivors. This new ribbon speaks to the r e s t o r a t i o n , transformation and the completion from the cancer journey that many survivors seek through reconstructive surgery after mastectomy. For those who desire, breast reconstruction provides closure and a new wholeness allowing a woman to put the disease behind her at last. “The traditional ‘pink ribbon’ has branded breast cancer ‘awareness, education and research’ but overlooks a huge population of underserved survivors that live with scars and a constant reminder of the disease,” founder Alisa Savoretti said. “There are hundreds

Taking Time By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I like being busy. It makes time go by faster, and gives you a sense of productivity otherwise lost on being complacent. And this summer has certainly been a busy one. The only problem is when you pause just long enough to look at the calendar and realize – it’s almost over. Labor Day is just around the corner and, while fall is technically over three weeks away, we all know that everyone’s mental clocks reset the second the last “official” barbeque of the season is over. Back to school, back from vacation… quick, close the pool and pack up the lawn chairs! Stick a fork in summer – it’s done. On the one hand, I would love to squeeze in just one

jlynn@theneighbornewspapers.com www.facebook.com/instepwithjamie more afternoon at the beach (or two or three), and, after all, a good old-fashioned grilled hot dog knows no season. Is it really time to pack up the white accessories, along with all the skirts and pastel-colored linens? But what if it’s still warm out?? Face it, transitioning isn’t easy. But on the other hand, there’s something exciting about fall too. It has its own perks and pleasures – the cool, crisp air, the upcoming Fall Festivals and Homecoming celebrations… football, postseason baseball… winery tours, pumpkin picking, Halloween… It’s definitely not all bad. Plus, it gives me an excuse to go “back to school” shopping for some new clothes! Every season arrives with

eager anticipation. But then, about halfway through, we’re already waiting for the next round. We’re impatient like that. And then we complain that time has flown by too quickly for us to fully appreciate each and every day. Can’t have it both ways. Like it or not, a new season – and a new mentality – is just around the corner. But what we choose to do with it, and how quickly we choose to react, is up to us. My calendar says we still have three and a half weeks left of summer, even more if the weather holds out. But if you’d rather dig out the boots and scarves from the back of the closet and get on line from now for Halloween candy, well that’s up to you. Just don’t complain that time is flying by too quickly.

Common Car Seat Mistakes Parents Should Avoid

(NAPSI)—Here’s a money-saving idea you may warm to: Use a coldwater wash cycle to keep winter wear and blankets clean while saving energy. Cool Off to Save Big High energy costs can result from washing clothes in warm and hot cycles. According to the Consortium for Energy Efficiency, cold-water cycles can use up 76 percent less water and 78 percent less energy while offering the same cleaning power. Not only does coldwater washing keep your energy bill low, it can help minimize how much you need to spend on dry cleaning and new clothes. Knits made of wool and other natural materials that you may have dry cleaned in the past can be safely cleaned and cared for with cold water on a gentle cycle. Keep Your Cool Stain removal can be

stressful, but there’s no reason for your temper or water temperature to rise in the face of difficult stains. Pre-treating and presoaking garments in warm water prior to washing can ensure your stains are removed regardless of the water temperature in your wash cycle. All stains are not alike. Protein stains, such as blood set in hot water, can make cold water a good option for keeping laundry spotless. Warm up at the Right Times Cold-water washing might not be the best option for every laundry load. Heavily soiled or grease-stained loads need warm or hot water for a proper cleaning. Machine Shop Some washing machines feature a cold cycle designed to work specifically with coldwater detergents. The

Maytag Bravos XL even has the Oxi Treat Stains option to ensure laundry is properly cleaned and cared for in cold water. Banish Residue Buildup As you use more coldwater cycles, keep an eyeand nose-on the inside of your washing machine for any residue that may build up. This residue, which can accumulate when too much detergent is used, is easily broken down with a once-a-month cleaning with a washer cleaner. Pop an affresh washer cleaner puck into your top-load or front-load washer and run on a hot cycle to dissolve odor-causing residue and leave your washer ready to handle your toughest laundry loads. Learn More For further money- and energy-saving washing advice, visit www.maytag.com and www.affresh.com or call (800) 344-1274.

Coastal Clean-Up

There are environmental reports due in September, but not all are for school projects. September 15th marks the main date for the 2012 International Coastal Cleanup, sponsored locally by Keep Islip Clean. As the name implies, this special series of cleanups is an international event and is unique because it involves not only picking up but also recording the type of litter found near

waterways. The data is analyzed by the American Littoral Society and the Ocean Conservancy to track global pollution trends in the marine environment. “This is an excellent activity for people interested in the health of waterways. It takes a bit more work than a regular litter cleanup because data cards are part of the activity but it’s a way to be part of a global effort that will also improve our own

coastal area,” said Nancy Cochran, Executive Director of Keep Islip Clean. KIC provides all data collection materials, instructions and supplies. Volunteers interested in participating can register their group through the KIC office, which can be reached at 631.224.2627 o r NETWORKING BBQ - Councilman Steve Flotteron recently attended the keepislipclean@optonline. Brentwood Chamber of Commerce Networking Barbeque. The event was held to net. promote business networking in a relaxed and friendly environment. For future Brentwood Chamber of Commerce events, please call 631.273.4443.

Guest Of The President

Sister Sanaa Nadim, the Muslim Chaplain for The Interfaith Center at Stony Brook University, attended the annual Iftar dinner hosted by President Barack Obama at the White House. Iftar is the meal when Muslim families and communities gather together after sunset to break a day of fasting during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. During his remarks at the dinner, the President reflected on the importance of religious freedom and the important role Muslims have played throughout our country’s history. He talked about the extraordinary courage of Muslim and MuslimAmerican women, including Sister Sanaa. “They are faith leaders like Sanaa Nadim, one of

the first Muslim chaplains at an American college - a voice for interfaith dialogue who’s had the opportunity to meet with the Pope to discuss these issues. We’re very proud to have you here,” said President Obama, according to an official White House transcript. “It was a real honor being recognized by President Barack Obama,” said Sister Sanaa. “He truly values the religious diversity that forms the fabric of our nation. Being at the White House where our founding fathers fought many years ago for the freedoms we enjoy today, reminded me of the importance of working to build bridges between groups divided by ethnic, cultural or religious differences. We are truly blessed to have a president

who appreciates the beauty of interfaith collaboration, and I feel so lucky to have had the opportunity to have spent time with him.” Sister Sanaa established the Stony Brook Muslim Student Association and works toward its constructive growth, which was reflected by an American interfaith survey that noted Stony Brook has the largest Muslim Student Association in the nation. Her current agenda involves working with different religious and cultural organizations as well as private and public institutions to continue building bridges among different faith groups to positively enhance the image of Islam through unity and understanding.

Don’t Text And Drive (NAPSI)—There are steps parents and others can take to drive down the dreadful rate of traffic injuries and fatalities. An estimated 6,000 people are killed and 500,000 people are injured annually because someone was texting, e-mailing or talking on a mobile phone while driving. The Facts Dr. Joel Haber, a clinical psychologist and LG Text Ed council member, explains that for teens, texting and driving is an even bigger problem than it is for adults. First, kids text more. Texting is their preferred mode of communication. According to a recent LG Text Ed survey conducted by LG Mobile phones, while half of all teens admit to texting while driving, only 4 percent of parents are aware of this. Second, teens are inherently novices when it comes to driving. They especially need to focus on the road to compensate for any lack of driving skill or experience. Third, teens can literally be driven to distraction. If a teen is caught up in a

dramatic or tense texting conversation, it could be too enticing to focus on the phone instead of the road. The Stats The U.S. government’s official website on distracted driving, www.distraction.gov, cites multiple statistics on the dangers of this careless behavior: • Using a mobile phone while driving, whether it’s handheld or hands-free, delays a driver’s reactions as much as having a blood alcohol concentration at the legal limit of .08 percent. • Driving while using a mobile phone reduces the amount of brain activity associated with driving by 37 percent. • Drivers who use handheld devices are four times as likely to get into crashes serious enough to injure themselves as those who don’t. • An estimated 11 percent of drivers are talking on cell phones while driving at any point during the day. The Steps 1. Impress upon teens the need to not text or talk

on the phone while driving by not doing so yourself. Beyond providing an example of responsible behavior, this creates a safer driving environment. 2. Explain to your teens the seriousness of the situation and let them know that it is important to have a plan in order to avoid temptation. For example, have them always keep their cell phone off while driving or in the backseat out of reach to avoid distraction completely. 3. Learn more from the experts in mobile technology at LG by visiting the company’s LG Text Ed website, www.lgtexted.com. As part of its Text Education campaign, LG offers insights and solutions on how to avoid possibly harmful behaviors such as distracted driving. In order to keep distractions to a minimum, LG encourages all drivers to never text while driving and to always use a handsfree Bluetooth device when operating a vehicle.

Dear Readers,

1.

Creighton did, however, take great issue when I used the words “killed” or “slaughtered.” Unbelievably, he kept “correcting” me and saying the cats were “euthanized.” So here, especially for the Councilman, is the definition of Euthanasia: the act or practice of killing or permitting the death of hopelessly sick or injured individuals (as persons or domestic animals) in a relativly painless way for reasons of mercy. Councilman Creighton also suggested I contact Supervisor Pat Vecchio, and I think that’s a great idea. Readers, if you are as upset and outraged as I am, if you feel the need to be a voice for these little voices who will never be heard again, please call Supervisor Vecchio at 631.360.7600 and let him know how you feel. After all, he can’t make the necessary corrections at the shelter if he doesn’t know you want change! Please visit a shelter and adopt. Remember, Your Best Friend Is Waiting...

I am outraged! It is beyond comprehension that one of our Long Island animal shelters would kill 15 cats in one day, yet that is exactly what happened at the Smithtown Animal Shelter. Unfortunately, by the time I started receiving tips about the cats, it was too late - they were already dead. I called and spoke with shelter director George Beatty, who confirmed that the cats had been killed. I’m sorry to tell you he was less than polite on a personal level, and also mumbled something about some of the cats being there for two years or more and unadoptable, which makes this even more horrible. Imagine the sense of terror and betrayal these poor little beings felt as a needle was jabbed into them and they felt their lives draining away! I want you to know Readers, that I asked EVERY rescue organization I know of and NOT ONE was contacted by the Smithtown Shelter or George Beatty and asked to take even one cat.

As a matter of fact, here’s what some of them had to say: “Not a good shelter at all”...“I was never contacted by the Town of Smithtown Animal Shelter in regards to rescuing any cats at the shelter”...“It’s unfortunate that shelters here on LI still resort to killing rather than reaching out for help.” Readers, I have made it known to shelter director Beatty that I would post pictures and write stories about animals at the shelter, but he has never submitted one picture. I have featured blind ten year-old cats, crippled animals, deaf animals...and our readers have always come forward and adopted. There is absolutely no excuse for not reaching out in every way possible to save the lives of these cats. This is an example of the very worst and least progressive in animal sheltering. By the way, Readers, I also reached out to Smithtown Councilman Robert Creighton, who I was told was the town “animal shelter liaison.” I checked the Councilman’s bio and found nothing even remotely related to pets or animals in general, which would explain his less than sympathetic attitude during our phone call. New Radio Host Station Sea Tow Services International, Inc., the nation's leading professional marine assistance provider, announces that Montauk Marine Basin is now a Sea Tow Automated Radio Check host station. Boaters in Long Island’s Montauk Harbor and the surrounding areas of Block Island Sound can take advantage of this vital boating safety service free of charge by calling Channel 26 on their VHF radio. Sea Tow’s Automated Radio Check service, which is provided in association with MariTEL, lets boaters quickly and easily check that their vessel’s VHF radio is in good working order. To use the service, they simply tune the VHF to

the local Automated Radio Check channel, key the mic, and request a radio check. They will hear an automated response and their call will be played back to them, confirming that the radio is operational and allowing them to assess transmission strength, a crucial safety check. Sea Tow’s Automated Radio Check service also aids the U.S. Coast Guard by reducing none m e r g e n c y communications on VHF Channel 16, freeing the channel up for distress call activity. “We are happy to be able to provide the free Automated Radio Check service to local boaters and all other mariners passing through the area," said Carl Darenberg, President of

Montauk Marine Basin. “A working VHF radio is one of the most important pieces of safety equipment on any boat.” The first and only service of its kind in the U.S., Sea Tow's Automated Radio Check repurposes existing technology in an innovative way by utilizing marine operator channels that are no longer needed for voice transmissions. Automated Radio Check is broadcast via VHF channels 24-28, depending on the region. To find the dedicated Automated Radio Check channel in a particular area, all a boater needs to do is visit w w w. s e a t o w. c o m / a r c , enter their city, state or zip code, and find their location on the interactive map.

End-Of-Summer Food Drive Thirteen year-old Hampton/NYC resident, Grant Andreas had an idea to collect the leftover food from the summer months to feed the struggling families of Long Island. Thanks to help of Strong’s Marine and Hall Lane Movin & Storage, Move For Hunger is turning Grant’s idea into a reality wit the first annual Hamptons End of Summer Food Drive. Over 320,000 people on Long Island, including 118,000 children, live on incomes that put them at risk for hunger. The collections from th End of Summer Food Drive will directly benefit the food supply of Long Island Cares-The Harry Chapin Food Bank; the organization that provides hunger relief for struggling families in Nassau and Suffol counties. Collection boxes will be set up all Labor Day

weekend long, September 1st through September 3rd at Strong’s Marine, conveniently located along County Road 39. Area residents are urged to set aside an nonperishable food items and drop off the donations during the weekend. Any person that makes a donation will automatically be entered to win a Stand Up Paddleboard courtesy of Sunrise to Sunse Surf and Sport. Hall Lane Moving and Storage, the local partner of Move For Hunger, has offered to provide the necessary boxes and deliver all donation directly to the Long Island Cares-The Harry Chapin Food Bank. “We’re very excited to once again partner with our friends at Move for Hunger for this very creative and exciting event,” said Paule Pachter, Executive Director of

Long Island Cares, Inc. “We’re very hopeful tha many people in the Hampton communities will come by and help th regional food bank in an our efforts to feed and support our neighbor in need. About Move For Hunger Move For Hunger is a non-profit organization that works with relocation companies across the country to pick up unwanted, unopene food from those who are relocating and deliver it to local food banks across the country. Many people think bottled water is safer and cleaner than tap water, but tap water is more stringently and more

consistently regulated than bottled water. Additionally, some bottled water sold in the U.S. is actually derived from tap

water, some of which is just bottled directly from the tap without further treatment.

WOUNDED WARRIOR VISIT - Suffolk County Legislator Steve Stern joined the Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team, which is composed of nearly 20 young, competitive athletic veterans and active-duty soldiers who have lost limbs while serving our great nation. The WWAST recently visited Suffolk County as part of a nation-wide tour to raise awareness of the sacrifices and resiliency of our military and demonstrate that through extensive rehabilitation and training amputee athletes are able to perform at the highest level. WWAST competes through exhibition and celebrity softball games.

NEIGHBORS’ SCRAMBLE - A recent Neighborhood Scramble attracted 148 golfers to the beautiful Nissequogue Golf Club in St. James and successfully raised over $135,000 in support of the programs and services the United Cerebral Palsy Association of Suffolk, Inc. provides for people with disabilities. Giving back to the community and doing their part by providing neighborly hospitality were volunteers from Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill and Bar who supplied a day-long cookout at the event.

you can use to liven up your home: 1. Call attention to one wall of a room with a bold tile accent. Be daring with patterns, or make it modern with subway tiles. 2. Tile the kitchen backsplash to add color and protect the wall from cooking messes. Bondera TileMatSet, a double-sided, peel- andstick tiling adhesive is a great tool to use instead of mortar and mastic, eliminating the mess and allowing you to

grout immediately after positioning the tiles. 3. Modernize old trivets by using the tile adhesive to create a custom tiled pattern that pops against tableware. 4. Explore your creative side by designing a charming tile pattern on an old tabletop, which will add pizzazz to lunches and evening drinks. For more on these and similar projects, visit www.bonderatilematset.com.

(NAPSI)—While many homeowners complain that they don’t have enough space, they may have more than they think. Surprisingly, according to a survey by the American Cleaning Institute, most clutter in the home is really the result of disorganization. “The majority of people have plenty of space, they just aren’t using the space wisely or efficiently,” explains Perri Kersh, a

professional organizer, owner of Neat Freak and member of the National Association of Professional Organizers. “The attic, for example, is an ideal place for storing certain infrequently used items such as holiday decor.” Organizational products can help you make better use of valuable space that is otherwise wasted. The new AtticMaxx™ Shelving System, for example, provides organized attic

space and easy access to stored items. The shelf system mounts between attic trusses—the triangular wooden structures used to support a pitched roof—to create vertical storage space around an attic floor. It installs in minutes with a screwdriver, a level and four screws. Visit www.AtticMaxx.com for more information and free organizing tips.
