Department Cookoff n Tuesday, August 21st, top chefs from the West Sayville and Bohemia Fire Departments squared off in a cooking contest, held at West Sayville Fire Department headquarters and sponsored by Firehouse Kitchen. After the panel of four judges, including Chiefs from each Department, taste-tested the gourmet offerings, the Cook-off was declared a tie. Smartphone Safety: What You Need To Know (NAPSI)—Smartphones make life so much more convenient, but if they are lost or stolen, your personal information may be exposed. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to protect your information. Here are a few tips from CTIA—the international w i r e l e s s telecommunications association: Take steps to prevent theft. Before a phone is lost or stolen, protect your information by using passcodes and applications. Passcodes—Use a passcode to make it harder for a thief to access your smartphone if it is lost or stolen. Apps—Use apps that can track or locate a lost or stolen smartphone. Some apps may also enable you to remotely wipe a device

or emit a loud alarm. If your device is lost or stolen, contact your wireless provider immediately to suspend your service. CTIA and its members always want America’s wireless users to be safe. Together with the Federal Communications Commission and major city police chiefs, CTIA and participating wireless companies have agreed to take steps to help protect consumers and their private information on smartphones. Paramount to preventing smartphone thefts is educating consumers about the tools and features that carriers, device manufacturers and app creators already offer. By using these passcodes and apps, consumers can protect themselves and their personal information

on their wireless devices. In addition, participating carriers have agreed to implement and deploy databases to prevent thieves from reactivating stolen smartphones in the U.S. and, when appropriate, internationally. The Long Island Veterans Open House by Eastern Suffolk BOCES welcomed veterans interested in enhancing their skills, changing careers, and seeking education-funding solutions. Taking Time By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I like being busy. It makes time go by faster, and gives you a sense of productivity otherwise lost on being complacent. And this summer has certainly been a busy one. The only problem is when you pause just long enough to look at the calendar and realize – it’s almost over. Labor Day is just around the corner and, while fall is technically over three weeks away, we all know that everyone’s mental clocks reset the second the last “official” barbeque of the season is over. Coastal Clean-Up

There are environmental reports due in September, but not all are for school projects. September 15th marks the main date for the 2012 International Coastal Cleanup, sponsored locally by Keep Islip Clean. As the name implies, this special series of cleanups is an international event and is unique because it involves not only picking up but also recording the type of litter found near

waterways. The data is analyzed by the American Littoral Society and the Ocean Conservancy to track global pollution trends in the marine environment. “This is an excellent activity for people interested in the health of waterways. It takes a bit more work than a regular litter cleanup because data cards are part of the activity but it’s a way to be part of a global effort that will also improve our own

coastal area,” said Nancy Cochran, Executive Director of Keep Islip Clean. KIC provides all data collection materials, instructions and supplies. During his remarks at the dinner, the President reflected on the importance of religious freedom and the important role Muslims have played throughout our country’s history. Don’t Text And Drive (NAPSI)—There are steps parents and others can take to drive down the dreadful rate of traffic injuries and fatalities. An estimated 6,000 people are killed and 500,000 people are injured annually because someone was texting, e-mailing or talking on a mobile phone while driving. The Facts Dr. Joel Haber, a clinical psychologist and LG Text Ed council member, explains that for teens, texting and driving is an even bigger problem than it is for adults. First, kids text more. Texting is their preferred mode of communication. According to a recent LG Text Ed survey conducted by LG Mobile phones, while half of all teens admit to texting while driving, only 4 percent of parents are aware of this. Second, teens are inherently novices when it comes to driving. They especially need to focus on the road to compensate for any lack of driving skill or experience. Third, teens can literally be driven to distraction. If a teen is caught up in a

dramatic or tense texting conversation, it could be too enticing to focus on the phone instead of the road. The Stats The U.S. government’s official website on distracted driving, www.distraction.gov, cites multiple statistics on the dangers of this careless behavior: • Using a mobile phone while driving, whether it’s handheld or hands-free, delays a driver’s reactions as much as having a blood alcohol concentration at the legal limit of .08 percent. • Driving while using a mobile phone reduces the amount of brain activity associated with driving by 37 percent. • Drivers who use handheld devices are four times as likely to get into crashes serious enough to injure themselves as those who don’t. • An estimated 11 percent of drivers are talking on cell phones while driving at any point during the day. The Steps 1. Impress upon teens the need to not text or talk

on the phone while driving by not doing so yourself. Beyond providing an example of responsible behavior, this creates a safer driving environment. 2. Explain to your teens the seriousness of the situation and let them know that it is important to have a plan in order to avoid temptation. For example, have them always keep their cell phone off while driving or in the backseat out of reach to avoid distraction completely. 3. As part of its Text Education campaign, LG offers insights and solutions on how to avoid possibly harmful behaviors such as distracted driving. I am outraged! It is beyond comprehension that one of our Long Island animal shelters would kill 15 cats in one day, yet that is exactly what happened at the Smithtown Animal Shelter. Unfortunately, by the time I started receiving tips about the cats, it was too late - they were already dead. I called and spoke with shelter director George Beatty, who confirmed that the cats had been killed. I’m sorry to tell you he was less than polite on a personal level, and also mumbled something about some of the cats being there for two years or more and unadoptable, which makes this even more horrible. Imagine the sense of terror and betrayal these poor little beings felt as a needle was jabbed into them and they felt their lives draining away! I want you to know Readers, that I asked EVERY rescue organization I know of and NOT ONE was contacted by the Smithtown Shelter or George Beatty and asked to take even one cat.

As a matter of fact, here’s what some of them had to say: “Not a good shelter at all”...“I was never contacted by the Town of Smithtown Animal Shelter in regards to rescuing any cats at the shelter”...“It’s unfortunate that shelters here on LI still resort to killing rather than reaching out for help.” Readers, I have made it known to shelter director Beatty that I would post pictures and write stories about animals at the shelter, but he has never submitted one picture. I have featured blind ten year-old cats, crippled animals, deaf animals...and our readers have always come forward and adopted. There is absolutely no excuse for not reaching out in every way possible to save the lives of these cats. This is an example of the very worst and least progressive in animal sheltering. By the way, Readers, I also reached out to Smithtown Councilman Robert Creighton, who I was told was the town “animal shelter liaison.” I checked the Councilman’s bio and found nothing even remotely related to pets or animals in general, which would explain his less than sympathetic attitude during our phone call.
