New Beginnings Community Center for Brain Rehabilitation, a non-profit organization located in Medford, will hold its first Golf Outing on September 25th at Willow Creek Golf & Country Club in Mt. Sinai. The proceeds from this event will support New Beginning’s Brendan House Community Project, which will provide long term care for those with (TBI) traumatic brain injuries. The Brendan House, which is located in Riverhead and was donated by The Agoglia Family, is named in memory of Blue Point’s TBI victim Brendan Akroyd. The golf outing begins with registration and breakfast at 10 a.m., a shot gun start/scramble format with lunch at the Turn at noon, and ends with a cocktail reception, dinner, awards and raffles beginning at 5 p.m.

Taking Time By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I like being busy. It makes time go by faster, and gives you a sense of productivity otherwise lost on being complacent. And this summer has certainly been a busy one. The only problem is when you pause just long enough to look at the calendar and realize – it’s almost over. Labor Day is just around the corner and, while fall is technically over three weeks away, we all know that everyone’s mental clocks reset the second the last “official” barbeque of the season is over. Back to school, back from vacation… quick, close the pool and pack up the lawn chairs! Stick a fork in summer – it’s done. On the one hand, I would love to squeeze in just one

Smartphone Safety: What You Need To Know (NAPSI)—Smartphones make life so much more convenient, but if they are lost or stolen, your personal information may be exposed. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to protect your information. Here are a few tips from CTIA—the international w i r e l e s s telecommunications association: Take steps to prevent theft. Before a phone is lost or stolen, protect your information by using passcodes and applications. Passcodes—Use a passcode to make it harder for a thief to access your smartphone if it is lost or stolen. Apps—Use apps that can track or locate a lost or stolen smartphone. Some apps may also enable you to remotely wipe a device
or emit a loud alarm. If your device is lost or stolen, contact your wireless provider immediately to suspend your service. CTIA and its members always want America’s wireless users to be safe. Together with the Federal Communications Commission and major city police chiefs, CTIA and participating wireless companies have agreed to take steps to help protect consumers and their private information on smartphones. Paramount to preventing smartphone thefts is educating consumers about the tools and features that carriers, device manufacturers and app creators already offer. By using these passcodes and apps, consumers can protect themselves and their personal information
on their wireless devices. In addition, participating carriers have agreed to implement and deploy databases to prevent thieves from reactivating stolen smartphones in the U.S. and, when appropriate, internationally. How do members of the U.S. National Luge Team get their start in the Fastest Sport on Ice?... through the Norton USA Luge Slider Search, which targets boys and girls ages 9 to 13. On Saturday and Sunday, September 15th and 16th, young athletes who want to experience the thrill of luge and train under the guidance of USA Luge national team coaches and athletes can do so when the Norton USA Luge Slider Search rolls into Farmingville. Summer Concert
The second summer concert held at Medford Memorial Park drew a happy crowd, there to enjoy the dulcet sounds of Something, the Band covering the best of the Beatle classics. This year’s concert series is once again organized by the Medford Chamber of Commerce and has been made possible by the generous
donations of three local businesses: Winter Brothers, McManus-Lorey Funeral Home, and Gershow Recycling. The third and last concert will take place Wednesday, August 29th at 7 p.m., featuring oldies and Doo Wop by The New York Exceptions. “It was my pleasure to work with the Chamber, not only as the Legislator

I am outraged! It is beyond comprehension that one of our Long Island animal shelters would kill 15 cats in one day, yet that is exactly what happened at the Smithtown Animal Shelter. Unfortunately, by the time I started receiving tips about the cats, it was too late - they were already dead. I called and spoke with shelter director George Beatty, who confirmed that the cats had been killed. I’m sorry to tell you he was less than polite on a personal level, and also mumbled something about some of the cats being there for two years or more and unadoptable, which makes this even more horrible. Imagine the sense of terror and betrayal these poor little beings felt as a needle was jabbed into them and they felt their lives draining away! I want you to know Readers, that I asked EVERY rescue organization I know of and NOT ONE was contacted by the Smithtown Shelter or George Beatty and asked to take even one cat.
As a matter of fact, here’s what some of them had to say: “Not a good shelter at all”...“I was never contacted by the Town of Smithtown Animal Shelter in regards to rescuing any cats at the shelter”...“It’s unfortunate that shelters here on LI still resort to killing rather than reaching out for help.” Readers, I have made it known to shelter director Beatty that I would post pictures and write stories about animals at the shelter, but he has never submitted one picture. I have featured blind ten year-old cats, crippled animals, deaf animals...and our readers have always come forward and adopted. There is absolutely no excuse for not reaching out in every way possible to save the lives of these cats. This is an example of the very worst and least progressive in animal sheltering. By the way, Readers, I also reached out to Smithtown Councilman Robert Creighton, who I was told was the town “animal shelter liaison.” I checked the Councilman’s bio and found nothing even remotely related to pets or animals in general, which would explain his less than sympathetic attitude during our phone call. Councilman

Creighton did, however, take great issue when I used the words “killed” or “slaughtered.” Unbelievably, he kept “correcting” me and saying the cats were “euthanized.” So here, especially for the Councilman, is the definition of Euthanasia: the act or practice of killing or permitting the death of hopelessly sick or injured individuals (as persons or domestic animals) in a relativly painless way for reasons of mercy. Councilman Creighton also suggested I contact Supervisor Pat Vecchio, and I think that’s a great idea. Readers, if you are as upset and outraged as I am, if you feel the need to be a voice for these little voices who will never be heard again, please call Supervisor Vecchio at 631.360.7600 and let him know how you feel. After all, he can’t make the necessary corrections at the shelter if he doesn’t know you want change! Please visit a shelter and adopt. Remember, Your Best Friend Is Waiting...

WOUNDED WARRIOR VISIT - Suffolk County Legislator Steve Stern joined the Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team, which is composed of nearly 20 young, competitive athletic veterans and active-duty soldiers who have lost limbs while serving our great nation. Sister Sanaa Nadim, the Muslim Chaplain for The Interfaith Center at Stony Brook University, attended the annual Iftar dinner hosted by President Barack Obama at the White House. Iftar is the meal when Muslim families and communities gather together after sunset to break a day of fasting during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. During his remarks at the dinner, the President reflected on the importance of religious freedom and the important role Muslims have played throughout our country’s history.
