ome of the fourth grade students at St. Martin of Tours Elementary School in Amityville recently performed the Nativity Scene in the church on December 17th in celebration of the holiday season. The students, with the guidance of their classroom and music teachers, acted out and sang many traditional Christmas songs, which guided us all in keeping Christ in Christmas. Pictured are a few of the participants in the production, dressed in the appropriate costumes for the pageant. Thanks to all those whose hard work and dedication helped to plan this event. A great time was had by all who participated in the festivities.

The Long Island Housing Partnership, Inc. (LIHP) is pleased to announce the receipt of the generous donation of $200,000 from the Robin Hood Relief Fund. In response to Hurricane Sandy’s devastation, The Robin Hood Foundation, New York City’s largest organization in the fight against poverty, has reactivated the Robin Hood Relief Fund, initially created in response to the September 11th, 2001 attacks. “For 24 years, Robin Hood has been providing housing, food and care for our neighbors in need throughout New York City, and we’re using that expert knowledge to help those affected by Hurricane Sandy,” said Robin Hood Executive Director David Saltzman in a press release this November. “The money LIHP received will greatly benefit low income families living

on Long Island impacted by Hurricane Sandy. The funding will be used to provide repairs from water damages, including heating system repairs, remediation of mold, sheetrock replacement and paint,” says Kevin Law, Chairman of LIHP. The Robin Hood Relief Fund is providing assistance to organizations throughout New York City and, for the first time, New Jersey, and Long Island. “LIHP is pleased to be working with Robin Hood here on Long Island,” says Peter J. Elkowitz, Jr., President and CEO of LIHP. “We appreciate their support to help families impacted by Sandy get back into their homes.” Be Happy Pleasure is Nature’s test, her sign of approval. The FEMA Sheltering and Temporary Essential Power (STEP) Program assists in performing temporary repairs to restore power, heat and hot water to primary residences. STEP is intended to help residents to shelter ‘in place” in their homes pending more permanent repairs. Suffolk County residents who wish to participate in the STEP Program should call 2-1-1 by January 18th, 2013 to set up an appointment for an assessment of their home. Once the assessment is completed, the scope of work will be determined and communicated to the program participant. The program manager will schedule a contractor to perform the work needed on the residential property. Work is required to be completed within sixty days of the assessment of the home.

One more good reason to stop smoking. Untreated periodontal (gum) disease is a common cause of bad breath. Treatment, followed by a good home hygiene can freshen your breath and save your teeth.

game hunting license, a signed landowner’s endorsement and a town permit. Only shotguns loaded with a single slug and muzzleloaders are legal for use during the January season. Crossbows are no longer a legal hunting instrument in New York as of December 31, 2012. Hunters should check with local towns and villages to determine any local restrictions or discharge

ordinances. Overpopulations of deer have the ability to negatively impact natural habitats along with agricultural, public and private properties, and public health in the forms of automobile/deer collisions and tick-borne diseases. Hunting is DEC’s most effective and efficient known tool to maintain wildlife populations at levels that are compatible

The Learning Curve By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I hate learning new things. I do. Sure, it’s great to broaden your horizons and add skills to your repertoire, but the actual learning process? Not so much fun. I prefer to fast forward to the part where I miraculously become highly proficient at something (which sometimes never happens) rather than muddle for too long in the learning curve portion. The funny part is that, with most things, once this “curve” has been navigated, you often realize that the new thing you were so

hesitant to take on wasn’t so bad in the first place. Simple, even. Just took a little getting used to, was all. Over time, we seem to be able to adapt to anything. Think about it. Look back on all your years in school… weren’t you nervous the first time being tested on a particular subject? Didn’t you get butterflies the morning of a big presentation? Wasn’t your initial reaction to any massive projects to immediately push them to the back of your mind and procrastinate? New = Frightening then, and it still does, to some extent, now.

They often say you should try one new thing each and every day – whether something as simple as tasting a new food, reading a new book or buying a new pair of jeans…right on up to the more monumental decisions of whether to search for a new job or buy a new house or travel the world. New = Exciting. It signifies growth, maturity, experience – all those things associated with moving onward and upward. Sometimes, all it takes is a little help navigating the curve to ultimately see the path for what it is – a straight line to improvement.
