On Saturday, March 16th, the 3rd Annual Elizabeth Durante Memorial Pancake Breakfast will be held, from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the West Islip Fire Department, located on Union Boulevard in West Islip. All proceeds will benefit the Elizabeth Durante Medical Clinic and Orphanage in a remote part of Uganda. There will be raffles, a Chinese Auction, a 50/50 and more. There will also be free

tours for children of the firehouse and the trucks. The Clinic provides free healthcare and surgery for women and children who otherwise would have no access to these medical services. The Orphanage supplies housing to 300 children. Elizabeth Durante was on her way to Uganda in March of 2009 when she was tragically killed by drunk driver. Her parents, Dr. Keith and his wife Kathy, have carried on the mission of the Clinic and Orphanage in Elizabeth’s memory. This fundraiser is sponsored by the West Islip Fire Department. Donations will also be accepted by mail to the Department. Please support this worthwhile cause by attending the Pancake Breakfast or making a donation.

MUSEUM VISIT - St. Martin of Tours fourth grade students visited the Vanderbilt Museum, exploring a variety of animals, their habitats as well as their adaptations, as they toured many halls within the estate. The tour guide also explained the history of the Vanderbilt family and the estate itself. The students learned about animals from all parts of the world, which are displayed in Mr. Vanderbilt’s personal collection. ED JOHNSON FOR MAYOR OF AMITYVILLE I am proud to have run a local retail business in Amityville for over 33 years, and I am well aware of the impact that our weak economy has brought to our village, not to mention the added financial impact brought on by Super Storm Sandy. The Village has suffered financially, with a decrease in revenues while costs continue to rise. I have solutions that, as Mayor, will enable me to improve the financial status of the village.

VILLAGE EMPLOYEES, UTILITIES AND GRANTS:

• I would retain counsel to negotiate all employee contracts as a flat-rate retainer, rather than on an hourly basis. I believe that expert negotiators, who are well-versed in labor and do not have personal relationships with employees, will ensure that the Village — and by that, I mean the taxpayers — obtain the best contract possible with their employees that is fair to all concerned. • I will ensure that Village utility expenses and communications agreements with Verizon and Cablevision are properly fulfilled by using an auditing firm that only gets paid on a contingency fee based on a portion of the amount of monies that they recover for the Village. • I would like to pass legislation that would require utility companies that open any street in our village to post a bond that will be held until we can ensure that the road is properly restored at the utility company’s expense and not that of the Village. • I will also start a program for road renovations by putting money aside every year to start a neighborhood replacement project. A certain number of roads would be renovated each year as is feasible, so at least residents would see progress. • I would aggressively pursue grants for Village improvements, especially for maintaining our equipment in our Department of Public Works and Fire Department to ensure the safety of our employees and volunteers.

BRUNSWICK HOSPITAL SITE REDEVELOPMENT AND TAXES:

• The Brunswick Hospital property development will be required to enter into a Community Beneﬁts Agreement with the Village. Such an agreement can require that there be a local hiring commitment that mandates that the developer use a minimum of 25% of local contractors or individuals for their project. This rule would apply to any other major development, such as apartment/housing projects. • I will pursue development of the Brunswick site and work with the county and town to negotiate an intermunicipal tax agreement that will fairly resolve outstanding tax issues, while getting this valuable property developed and back on the tax rolls. I will ensure that all parties pay their fair share of taxes, and Payment in Lieu of Taxes (PILOT) agreements will be scrutinized to ensure that they are ﬁscally fair and being properly enforced. • I will guarantee that we are receiving our fair share of sales tax.

BANKS AND FORECLOSURE:

• I would introduce legislation that would require banks to provide notice to the Village when they commence a foreclosure action against property located in the Village. Unfortunately, sometimes property in foreclosure is abandoned and/or in disrepair. We need to be aware of such circumstances so our police and building departments can keep an eye on the property to make sure that it does not become an eyesore. • This legislation will also provide the Village with a contract to address any possible issues while the foreclosure is pending and ensure that the property is maintained until the title transfers.

AMITYVILLE BEACH:

• I would like to get the beach operational for bathing and for swimming and sailing programs, even on a temporary solution for this season, while we wait for funds from FEMA before we proceed with major renovation. I feel residents will understand this delay, as so many are still waiting for their insurance claims and are waiting to have their improvements done on their own homes, post-Sandy. • This beach renovation will be a major project in our village, and I welcome ideas and expertise from those involved in the community to help make decisions, instead of just pushing it ahead to beat the clock.

TRAFFIC SAFETY ON ROUTE 110:

• I would like to look into possible red light camera enforcement on Route 110. Red light cameras have proven to be a source of ﬁnancial revenue in other communities, while ensuring that drivers slow down and stop at red lights.

TERM LIMITS FOR ELECTED VILLAGE OFFICIALS:

• I recommend term limits for elected Village Trustees and the Mayor to three terms of office (12 years). I think this would keep Village politics more current and would get more residents involved in Village government.

TRANSPARENCY IN YOUR VILLAGE GOVERNMENT:

• I will welcome transparency and accountability from me and every department in the Village. • I will ensure that the Village agenda, as well as proposed resolutions, are on the Village website no later than the Friday before the Village Board meeting. • I will institute a policy that requires that there be a written follow-up when a resident has made a complaint. The complaint and response will be forwarded to me so that I am always aware of residents’ concerns. I will be a hands-on Mayor, and my business’ proximity to Village Hall will make this possible.

The reason we live in the Village of Amityville is because we enjoy the quality of life that an incorporated village gives us, one that is different from any other community on Long Island. Amityville is a beautiful village that is welcoming and ideal for raising a family in, retiring in, or simply living in. Amityville provides something for everyone. As your Mayor, my goal is to improve the quality of life at every level. I have the knowledge, experience, energy and ingenuity to bring positive change to the Village of Amityville.

Azha Daniels presented her piece, Lost And Found, and Simone Smith, Dana Dexter and Emily Spizzirri (all pictured) presented their untitled works. Their art teacher is Jayne Grasso. In the Art League of Long Island’s sixth annual “Go APE” Exhibition, Advanced Placement art students from many Long Island high schools

exhibited their work in a wide spectrum of visual arts including drawing, painting, printmaking, mixed media, sculpture, photography and computer graphics in a professional gallery setting. Simone, along with AMHS artists Jamie Radhaykissoon, Donique Streete and Demi Wade represented Amityville in the Suffolk County Art Leaders Association Scholarship Show held at the Old Babylon Town Hall. In addition to attending the inauguration ceremony, the two AMHS students also attended a Presidential Inauguration Leadership Summit, where they networked with students from across the country, participated in government workshops and met former Secretary of State Gen. Colin Powell as well as representatives from the Federal Bureau of Investigations. “It was fun being a part of the experience,” said Hunter, who is the Class of 2013 valedictorian. By: Karen Ranieri, North Massapequa My babies are growing up What they used to love me doing Is just embarrassing now My little boy walks down the hall From a distance, all I see is his back Then suddenly, he turns to see if I’m still there And gives me a wave My heart melts ‘Cause his big sisters They don’t look back anymore She doesn’t look back I guess it’s okay It means she’s growing up In every sense of the way Sometimes those moments get lost Day to day But when my little guy looked back It reminded me of so many yesterdays I drop her off to her hourly job She tells me not to stop in front It’s too embarrassing Getting a lift from my mom She scurries in through the door She doesn’t look back anymore My baby is getting ready to dance Her tutu and make-up on I used to walk her backstage And she’d glance and I’d give her a wink You’re going to do great Don’t be scared Just look straight ahead Don’t look at the floor Now, she doesn’t look back anymore They say you have to let go Cut those apron strings

practically standing on your brakes while in the right traffic lane as you suddenly realize your exit is approaching – oh, in 3 feet or so. Same goes for merging onto a major highway or parkway. Do not assume that the lane is clear for you to simply sail right through at 60 mph. There are occasionally, you know, other vehicles already inhabiting that space. Then there are those scenarios that are simply so bizarre, they are beyond words. A few weeks ago, I was stopped at a light on the Service Road of the LIE. As I waited in the left hand turning lane, a truck opposite me in the right hand lane, I noticed a car approach in the middle lane, “driven” by a man staring intently at the map spread across his steering wheel. Suddenly, he apparently

decided that he needed to be somewhere else, and proceeded to back up on the Service Road and cut his wheel, angling his car toward this aforementioned truck in the right lane…all the while, never shifting his gaze from the map. With a mix of horror and amusement, I watched the scene unfold. I glanced at the truck driver, to see him absolutely hysterical with laughter, shaking his head in amazement. The light turned green at that point, spurring me to get out of there before witnessing Act II of this particular play. No telling what the next move might have been! Let’s all focus people. And not on our maps, please. The road. Only the road. And for goodness sake, invest in a snowbrush.

On Friday, March 1st, students at Northwest Elementary School in Amityville attended a monthly Character Counts Assembly, which recognizes classes and individuals for their accomplishments in accordance with the school’s Six Pillars of Character. Classes were presented with certificates marking the completion of this month’s pillar and theme, responsibility, which was described, encouraged and celebrated throughout the assembly. The gathering began with a short story and Power Point presentation about Ansvar the elephant who had many responsibilities to remember and carry out. Ansvar’s story stressed the importance of realizing that actions impact everyone, which is why it is important to follow through, display self-control and avoid the use of blame when a problem arises and instead employ methods of independent problem solving. Next, attendees viewed a video created by Kerrin Faulkner and Olimpia Karounos’ classes, tying in last month’s theme of respect. The short-film defined respect and explained how students

displayed their acts of respect in and out of the classroom every single day. The assembly concluded with a song performance by students in Margaret Brooks and Margaret Gonser’s classes. The number, an original song composed by Brooks, expounded on the concept of

responsibility not only to one’s self, but to others as well. An afternoon assembly for students included a performance of an original poem, written by Linda Lipowski and read by Alisa Zitofsky and Adeline Karniewich.

Recently, students at Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School in Amityville participated in a Black History Month celebration honoring black inventors and scientists of the past, present and future. The event, organized by the school’s Black History Month Committee and led by Committee Chair Denise Graham, included spirited performances by the percussion ensemble, school dance group and school chorus. Students also played the rolls of accomplished African Americans throughout time, providing facts and other insights into their lives and achievements. Attendees were also treated to an animated reading of a short story about famous black inventors and how their invaluable contributions have become necessities in our daily lives.
