I am so disappointed in the response - or, should I say, lack of response - by the town of Smithtown to the slaughter of close to 28 cats (my previous number of 15 was incorrect) at the town shelter. I was told by an exasperated office worker that the phone in Supervisor Vecchio’s office was ringing off the hook and that Supervisor Vecchio “wasn’t going to do anything about the shelter.” She refused to give me her name. Supervisor Vecchio did not return my phone call. Calls were sent right over to the shelter and, depending on when you called, you received the following excuse: “yes, rescue organizations were called,” or “the cats were sick.” Neither of those excuses were true. However, if shelter director G. Beatty found the shelter was overcrowded or he needed to “clean up the shelter” due to an official visit, all avenues to save lives should have been explored: adoption events (there were none)...contacting our wonderful rescue organizations (none received a call). Readers, what steps do you think the public should take to effect change at the Smithown Shelter? Please send me your comments. Readers, if you are trying to volunteer at the Hempstead Town Animal Shelter or are “on hold” awaiting orientation, please send me an e-mail. The animals are languishing in their cages as they continue to wait for the animal shelter to get its act together.

Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center’s Pharmacy Department has scheduled a drug “take back” day on Saturday, September 29th, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., in partnership with the federal Drug Enforcement Administration. Members of the community may safely dispose of unused or expired medications rather than discarding them in the garbage or flushing them down the toilet which could lead to e n v i r o n m e n t a l contamination. Hicks Nurseries is offering fun activities for families from September 15th through October 31st at 100 Jericho Turnpike in Westbury. Otto the Ghost returns in the free animated story Otto’s Crows Woes, where Otto aids his friends the scarecrow and the witch in saving their fall harvest of corn and pumpkins from the hungry crows. Glowing scenes and special effects make the show visually exciting and visitors are asked to be helpful like Otto by donating non perishable food items to support the efforts of Long Island Cares. The weekends are packed with activities that include real live farm animals to visit (free) plus Otto’s Hay Ride and homemade fudge, fresh cider and roasted corn. To decorate the home there will be hay bales, corn stalks, gourds and lots of pumpkins for sale. Special children’s workshops are offered during the week. Reservations can be made by calling 516.334.0066. • Decorate Otto’s Krispie House on Tuesday,

Wednesday and Thursday, October 23rd, 24th and 25th at 4:30 p.m. Cost: $12 + tax per child. Children are invited to turn a house made out of rice krispies into a home for Otto the Ghost. Hicks will supply the house and all of the candy and icing. The house, which measures 7 inches by 8 inches, is totally edible. • Children’s Pumpkin Decorating Workshop on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, October 16th, 17th and 18th at 4:30 p.m. Cost: $8 + tax per child. QUESTION: In order to remove bacterial plaque from our teeth, we have to see it. How is this accomplished? ANSWER: This is done with something called a disclosing agent -- usually a red dye that stains bacteria. You can buy it at any pharmacy. Apply it with a Q-tip (after you brush and floss). Paint the edge of your gum where it meets the teeth. Move the Q-tip along, up and down, following the gum line. Now rinse and look to see where the stain is. Then brush and floss again. You'll notice that although brushing removes some of the stain at the direct edge of the gum, it did not get it all BETWEEN the teeth. Only dental floss will get into these areas to remove bacteria.. Brushing won't. Do this disclosing daily at first until you really know your mouth, and later three times a week. You really won't know if you've effectively removed plaque if you don't disclose. It's like trying to lose weight without checking yourself on a scale. From the office of

In Memory Of Bill Stein. This past week, we lost a dear friend of ours, Bill Stein. We’ve known Bill for over 50 years, since his wife Ann worked for my Dad. My father opened the Funeral Home in 1958, and a few years later Bill, and his wife Ann, came to live and work at the Funeral Home. They were dedicated employees for decades until they retired to Pennsylvania. Bill was like and adopted Grandfather to our Son Eric since both of his grandfathers died before he was born. various school supplies during the month of August. The goal of the campaign is to provide children from low-income families with new school supplies to help prepare them for their academic studies and build their self-esteem. Having extra school
