By volunteering as a host family for summer 2013, the spirit of Thanksgiving can continue in your home throughout the year. “I love how quiet and peaceful it is compared to the city. By: Jamie Lynn Ryan This holiday season, it seems especially appropriate to reflect on those things we are thankful for, individually and collectively. Considering all that most of us have been through – and continue to go through – over the last month, I believe most of us have found a new appreciation for those things formerly taken for granted. For one, if you are fortunate enough to spend this Thanksgiving holiday with your family, friends and loved ones, consider yourself ahead of the game. Sure, you may have to forgo the traditional turkey dinner at home, but was the holiday ever truly about the food to begin with?

Perhaps, for some. Food, coupled with football and Black Friday shopping, right? Well this year, it is about something else, something far more important to the big picture. Togetherness. Compassion. Charity. That sense of fulfillment that only comes from these qualities… if only it didn’t take natural disasters and national tragedies to bring this sort of behavior out. I suppose the better part of human nature is always there, just below the surface, pushed aside by the daily monotony of life’s obligations. But to see it on display… that’s something the likes of which we don’t witness nearly often enough. This Thanksgiving – and

Christmas, while we’re at it – the emphasis should be on the people we choose to celebrate with. The rest is material – the food, the gifts, the decorations – and can be modified on the fly. But the people… they cannot be replaced. We have all lost a lot over this last month; at the very least, a sense of security and complacency. Maybe this isn’t a bad thing. Perhaps it is a reminder that we should never take things for granted, and should always be moving forward. You simply never know when things will come to a grinding standstill. Let’s all enjoy the moments and the memories this holiday season. Absorb each and every one and savor them. Happy Thanksgiving.

With homes and businesses destroyed, a gasoline shortage plus some people still without power and heat nine days after Hurricane Sandy, many New York soccer leagues have cancelled games for the foreseeable future. The Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) and Region I, both under the umbrella of the United States Youth Soccer Association, are providing relief to soccer

clubs and leagues adversely affected by the hurricane. Region 1 is offering up to $2,000 in grants and ENYYSA will match every grant approved by Region I. Applications must be returned to the ENYYSA office at 53 North Park Avenue, Suite 103, Rockville Centre, NY 11570, prior to the Region I, December 15th deadline. The application is attached. “Many of our members

have suffered a tremendous amount of hardship from Hurricane Sandy. It’s times like these that all Americans, including the soccer community, come together to help,” commented ENYYSA President Richard Christiano. “We applaud Region I’s generosity in helping those adversely affected and Eastern New York will match every grant they approve for our members.”

From Bulldog Rescue: Due to the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, many of our volunteers have been left without power, evacuated from their homes and tending to getting their own affairs in order. We are in great need of foster homes in New Jersey, Long Island and surrounding areas. This means that if you genuinely want to help a Bulldog who has no where else to turn, we will cover all approved medical expenses and will provide a MCM Rottweiler Rescue crate if needed. We don’t want to turn away a rescue, and we don’t want to see them end up on the street or in the shelters. It’s snowing as I write this and, like many of you, I haven’t had electricity for ten days now. I’m wearing multiple layers of clothing and gloves, and it feels as if I’ll never be able to get warm again. But I need to reach out to you because our friends, our neighbors and our community needs our assistance.

The athletic field at Amityville Memorial High School was filled with teams of seniors facing off in a host of cooperative games on October 17th as the school hosted its annual Senior Awareness Day. While sporting their red Amityville football jerseys, the students participated

in several fun-filled activities throughout the day, including a senior breakfast, sports, a field trip to Amityville Beach and more. The special celebration culminated with the cooperative games, which required the students to work strategically as a unit to succeed and win.

This event, which was coordinated by special education teacher Jason McGowan, is part of the school’s ongoing effort to educate students about the importance of valuing teamwork, diversity, physical fitness, school spirit and sportsmanship.

Thirty-two Amityville Memorial High School juniors and seniors participated in the Annual Tour of Historical Black Colleges. This year, the tour turned to schools in the North Carolina area with stops at Winston Salam State, North Carolina Central, North Carolina A&T, Shaw University, St. Augustine College, and Duke University. Students visited the different campuses and learned about admission procedures and scholarship and financial aid opportunities. They were even treated to a football game and a museum trip focused on Black history. AMHS social

worker/COMPASS coordinator Raymond Velez and social worker Reynolds Hawkins accompanied students on the tour and joined many of them at a recent Amityville Board of Education meeting, where they discussed the trip and how it has enlightened them to available opportunities and inspired them to further pursue higher education. Additionally, the AMHS guidance department recently conducted an evening college fair in the school gymnasium, which was attended by approximately 100 colleges and universities from across the country, including some schools specializing in the needs

Cultural Experience

of ethnic minority students. The Historical Black Colleges tour has been funded through a COMPASS Coalition and grant is designed to encourage students to focus on their future education. Since the tour began six years ago, more than 200 AMHS juniors and seniors have visited more than 20 different Historical Black colleges. Since the grant can no longer be used for the tour, COMPASS will be conducting fundraising to support future trips. Edmund Miles Middle School in Amityville recently celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month with a schoolwide cultural experience that included hands-on activities based on Hispanic history and culture. Students rotated through various classrooms and school centers during their social studies classes. Spanish/Latin foods were served in the EWMMS cafeteria. During physical education classes, students learned about famous Hispanic athletes and had the opportunity to learn some Latin dance moves while exercising through Zumba in the

little gym, led by Sandy Whitney and her student assistants. The EWMMS library was transformed into a Hispanic heritage museum with artifacts and displays of various Hispanic countries, created by National Junior Honor Society students. Students also enjoyed a flag-identifying game as well as a craft-making activity, in which they created a Quetzal bird from cardboard. In the school’s computer lab, students took virtual tours of the Hispanic countries and even conducted an Internet scavenger hunt,

answering questions developed by NJHS students while using an interactive timeline on the influences of Hispanics throughout the Americas. There was also a live performance of Hispanic music led by Joseph Sciolino’s music students, including a lesson on Hispanic instruments that provided participants with the opportunity to play some music using these instruments. Music, food, history and geography were just some of the topics that made the EWMMS Hispanic cultural experience an informative one to remember.
