Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are painful, medically incurable illnesses that attack the digestive system. Crohn's disease may attack anywhere along the digestive track, while ulcerative colitis inflames only the large intestine (colon). Symptoms may include abdominal pain, persistent diarrhea, rectal bleeding, fever, weight loss and fatigue. Many patients require hospitalization and surgery. Most people develop the diseases between the ages of 15 and 35; however the incidence is increasing in young people. United Cerebral Palsy Association of Greater Suffolk. Inc. (UCP Suffolk) was awarded a $10,000 grant from the Chicago based CME Group Community Foundation. The grant funds will be used to purchase and install a SMART Board and Satalight Interactive Learning Station at The Children’s Center at UCP Suffolk in Commack. The Satalight Interactive Learning Station features an interactive, height adjustable whiteboard with a special SMART Board projector and touch display surface. The Station’s innovative and flexible design makes it easily accessible for children with physical challenges. The addition of this technology will enable the Children Center’s staff to have more one-to-one interaction with the students and help

them become more independent through learning and problem solving. “The integration of this new technology will bring the outside world into the classroom for children with disabilities and enable our students to communicate and see the world in ways that were not previously possible,” explained Sherri Glazer, The Children’s Center Principal and Director of Education Services. The Children’s Center at UCP Suffolk operates Early Intervention, Preschool and School – age programs tailored to meet the physical, cognitive and emotional needs of children with disabilities from birth to 21 years of age. “Thanks to the support of CME Group Community Foundation, we will be able to provide new learning

The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) has long been at the forefront of providing alcohol and drug education and treatment referrals and addiction services to individuals. Now, the Long Islandbased non-profit will offer an additional resource to families who are dealing with the loss of a loved one due to addiction in the form of new Grief and Loss Support Groups in both Nassau and Suffolk. The Grief and Loss Support Groups will start this Saturday, September 29th and meet weekly from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in LICADD’s Mineola (114 Old Country Road, Suite 114) and Ronkonkoma (2805 Veterans Memorial Highway, Suite 26) offices. Participants will have an opportunity to connect with others, while receiving the skills and

support necessary to understand and move through the grieving process. “Losing an addicted child, sibling, parent, spouse or any family member to an overdose, car crash, or in any other way is extremely traumatic; a life is lost and in its place are often feelings of guilt, anger and grief,” explained LICADD Clinical Director Steven Chassman, LCSW. “We want anyone experiencing such a loss to know that they are not alone and that healing is possible,” he added. Every 19 minutes, one American dies of an accidental overdose. “Those figures are reflected on Long Island, and our communities have been devastated by this senseless loss of life,” said Dr. Jeffrey L. Reynolds, LICADD’s Executive Director. “We

The Suffolk County Community College Women’s Volleyball Team will once again participate in a Dig Pink Volleyball match to raise funds to support breast cancer education programs and research efforts. This year’s match will take place on Thursday, October 11th at 6 p.m. in the Brookhaven Gymnasium on the Ammerman Campus in Selden, where the team will play Nassau Community College in a best-of-five-games series. In lieu of admission,

donations will be accepted at the door or can be mailed to the College’s Athletics Office, c/o Joseph Kosina-Room 110, at 533 College Road in Selden, NY 11784. All donations are tax deductible and will go to the Side-Out Foundation, which was established in 2004 to unite volleyball players and coaches and to have them work toward the common goal of furthering breast cancer awareness, education and patient services. The term “side-out” refers to a situation in

FRANKSDELIPLUS.COM

volleyball when one team wins a point while its opponent is serving, thereby regaining serve or control of play. It is hoped that this Foundation will do the same for breast cancer patients, providing them with the support, education and best available treatments to resume control of their lives. Through volleyball tournaments, clinics and other events, the Side-Out Foundation raises funds to donate to organizations that support the ideal of a cancer-free world.

Assemblyman Bob Sweeney has joined with the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program in their October breast cancer awareness campaign to encourage woman to get mammograms. “October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a significant time to remind women to get mammograms,” says Assemblyman Sweeney. “Often women will put their own health on hold as they take care of family members; we want to send out the message that when you take care of yourself, you’re taking care of your

family.” For more information, call the Adelphi New York Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program at 800.877.8077. Callers can also get emotional support from the hotline’s specially trained volunteers, most of who are women who have had breast cancer. The hotline has been in existence for over three decades. It is a project of the Adelphi University School of Social Work on Long Island. All services are free. The web site is: www.adelphi.edu/nysbreas tcancer.

By: Jade Nussbaum, Seaford

I feel as if my mind is lost I’m in a room all alone I feel that no one is here with me Just the wall and the sky above I want to sing a soft-spoken song But there is no one to sing along I hear a beat inside of me And a tune inside my head But with nothing around I’m a loner To myself I keep the tune But no one ever heard the song Just my mind that is now gone

(NAPSI)—Shields aren’t just for superheroes and knights in armor. Now there’s one designed to protect your toothbrush from harmful bacteria. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) strongy advises against storing toothbrushes in enclosed spaces that are conducive to bacterial growth. This includes plastic toothbrush caps for travel, medicine cabinets at home and desk drawers at work. The Toothbrush Shield is a disposable, breathable and fast-drying shield that acts like a surgical mask for your toothbrush. It was created to replace plastic snap-on caps and holders. Made of an antimicrobial non-woven material that wicks away moisture, it’s designed to provide a cleaner, healthier environment for your toothbrush—and your mouth. Laboratory tests show it to be an effective barrier against bacterial and viral transfer from both airborne and surface microbial contact. Made by IntelliDent, it’s available at major pharmacy chains nationwide. To learn more, visit www.ToothbrushShield.co m.

A Reflection By Msgr. Daniel S. Hamilton* Pastor Emeritus, OLPH Church, Lindenhurst BEFORE YOU VOTE IN NOVEMBER, PLEASE CONSIDER THIS: TWO RADICALLY DIFFERENT CHOICES FACE VOTERS IN THE 2012 NATIONAL ELECTIONS:

244671N1003

For More Information Call: 631-226-2636 - www.theneighbornewspapers.com

The FIRST CHOICE endorses a “right” to the killing of innocent pre-born human beings – ABORTION. And down the line, this “right” will likely be extended to the killing of persons, usually of advanced age or incurably ill, judged useless or a burden, financial or otherwise, to society and therefore who should be eased out – EUTHANASIA – and to the assisted killing of adult persons who because of their incurable illness or serious disability want to die and want a physician to help them die - ASSISTED SUICIDE. This choice also embraces the already approved medical destruction of human embryos; the manufacture of human beings, the forced provision of insurance for contraception, sterilization procedures and potentially abortifacient drugs - the HHS mandate affecting most religious health, higher educational and social units. The latter calls upon us to RENOUNCE OUR RELIGIOUS LIBERTY. Finally, this choice gives strong support to the legal and social sanction nationwide of HOMOSEXUAL, SAME-SEX “MARRIAGE.” Citizens are being asked to trash the 1995 Defense of Marriage Act, overwhelmingly passed in the Congress and signed by the president. Can one identify greater basic human values founded in the natural moral law that we would be trashing by making such a choice? PRIORITY ISSUES Virtually all these goals, objectives, policies, and procedures gravely violate natural moral law, the precepts of which our human reason reveals to us when we reflect on our own experience and our relationships with others. What is intrinsically evil can never rightly be chosen. No circumstances can make such actions right; they are always wrong. To vote for persons who have supported or, if elected, their records show, will support, authorize and promote such evils is a grave misjudgment of our duties as faithful citizens. Consciously choosing to support such actions by voting for such candidates would be seriously wrong. Faced with such evils and, perhaps, additional ones down the road, we have no choice but to reject their supporters. THE SECOND CHOICE, the right choice, is to vote for candidates who, in the main, firmly uphold the inviolability and dignity of innocent human life, human dignity in all its stages, from fertilization to natural death, the givenness of marriage and family life in the natural order and the precious gift of religious liberty and respect for conscience. To act otherwise would be positively to endorse what does already or will in the future injure the common good by terminating innocent human life, violating human dignity, the authentic meaning of marriage and family life and the precious values of religious liberty and the right of conscience. OTHER ISSUES But some will object. This is true, but in an election there are other important issues in addition to these basic ones. Yes, party platforms identify scores of major issues to which government should give attention. But these other issues are of a different category. They are issues or problems, the solution to which depends on constantly changing facts or data and call for different judgments at different times in response to different circumstances. Issues, for example, like foreign affairs, our involvement with foreign wars and conflicts; nuclear armaments; aid to developing nations, the creation of jobs, affordable housing, health services, educational facilities, immigration, reducing the huge national debt – on all these issues well-intentioned and informed citizens can and do differ as to the best solutions and policies to follow. Ordinary citizens and government officials make prudential, not necessarily inerrant decisions on what is the best course of action to follow. These decisions may have to be altered as circumstances change. Natural moral law respects these diverse judgments of citizens and government officials on the issues just mentioned and does not seek to identify one solution as the only one. In such cases natural moral law can set forth only principles that ought to govern solutions. It is up to government officials and citizens to identify concrete solutions to such problems. But when genuine evils, even if only permissive, become entrenched in the civil law, it is very difficult to uproot them. For example, once permissive abortion, the killing of the pre-born child, was sanctioned by law, it has proved difficult, almost impossible to remove it. CONCLUSION Please reflect on this radical difference between the choices in this coming election; and on the basic moral issues, vote only for those candidates whose platform and record are in accord with the natural moral law. Other issues, which also have important moral dimensions, but are more affected by changing data and by personal judgment on a variety of factors, cannot take priority over basic issues of the natural moral law. *This personal message to fellow citizens on crucial values at stake in the upcoming national election has been paid for personally by Msgr. D. S. Hamilton.

(NAPSI)—Onions— they’re used in a wide range of recipes, from breakfast to supper and nearly every ethnic cuisine. To help you get the best results, here are a few facts about each type and how to decide which onions to use. • Yellow onions are all purpose, used every way from raw to roasted. They are the most abundant type of onion. When raw, their flavor can range

CONGRATULATIONS TO Catherine Furnari Of West Babylon WHO WON A MOVIE THEATRE GIFT CARD FROM SOUTH BAY’S NEIGHBOR

from sweet to pungent, depending on the variety and time of year. Cooking brings out their nutty, mellow flavor-especially when caramelized. • Red onions are increasingly popular, especially raw in salads and sandwiches. Their wonderful color also makes them perfect for grilling, charbroiling and roasting. • White onions are commonly used in Mexican, Southwest and BBQ dishes. They are also used in sauces and potato and pasta salads. When sautéed, they turn a golden color and have a mild flavor. With so many ways in which they can be used, it’s easy to see why the National Onion Association says onions are among the most versatile vegetables. For tips on how to caramelize onions and recipe ideas, visit www.onions-usa.org.

Speaking Of Siri

By: Jamie Lynn Ryan A few weeks ago, my friend and I got the bright inspiration to walk all the way to Kismet from the Fire Island Lighthouse. I had been told it wasn’t an extremely long journey, and, timed just right in the early fall, would be quite lovely and scenic. Well, it was certainly scenic. Considering that there is basically one route from the Lighthouse leading into the Fire Island communities, one would think there would be no need for directions. But, just for kicks, I decided to put the address of the restaurant we planned to go to – Surf’s Out – into my phone and ask the famous Siri for directions. Immediately, my trusty little map dropped a pin at our current location, as well as another quite some distance away. At first glance, it seemed rather far, but we paid no mind. We just started walking. Pretty soon, we saw the sign telling us we were entering Kismet Village. Okay, we were on the right track. My friend thought she remem-

bered that there was a particular cross street we would need to make a left turn on, in order to head north to the Bay side of the Island, where the restaurants were located. Not quite certain which road it was, we figured surely there would be a sign. Oh, there was a sign all right! The next marker we came across welcomed us to the Village of Saltaire – in other words, we were now exiting Kismet. Hmmm… interesting. And yet there remained the little glowing dot on my phone, still way off in the distance. Something was very wrong. As I zoomed in further, I started to faintly make out the words “Ocean Beach” stamped on the map. Ocean Beach?! As in that town I had not too long ago take a ferry to?! I didn’t even know you could walk there if you wanted to! And who in their right mind would want to? Uh-oh, we were seriously off track. At that point, short of knocking on a local resident’s door – many of whom had already packed it in for the season – the only other

passers-by consisted of bicyclists zooming by – and deer…lots of deer, galloping across the street, darting from one yard to the other presumably in search of something to munch on. Ah, but then, out of the blue came an older couple, clearly local residents out for a leisurely afternoon stroll. “Excuse me, but can you tell us if there is a restaurant near here?” my friend inquired. “Oh yes,” the man said. Oh good, I thought. “But not here…” Uhoh. “It’s way back in Kismet,” he gestured in the direction from which we had just come. Oh boy. “How far, exactly?” “Oh, it’s a good hike,” his wife said apologetically. We politely thanked them and began the long process of retracing our steps, finally arriving at our intended destination – approximately 3.5 miles and 1 hour and 20 minutes after departing. All for the experience of walking to Kismet. It was an experience all right. Suffice it to say, Siri will not be invited on our next journey.

Animal Adventures

“Nature” Nick Jacinto, one of the most wellknown animal handlers in the New York tri-state area, paid a visit to Babylon Memorial Grade School on August 3rd to teach Lisa Necroto and Eileen Ratto’s students a lesson on ‘animal adventures.’ Jacinto and his animals have appeared on numerous television shows, including “Good Morning America” and

“The Martha Stewart Show.” His event appearances include animals from all corners of the world, and he arrived to the grade school with a lemur, a parrot, a snake, a hedgehog, twin baby alligators and a wallaby, each of which are animals the students learned about during summer classes. “As a culmination of our summer animal study, students were able to see,

touch and learn more about the animals they had researched in books and on the Internet,” Mrs. Ratto said. “All of our students were thrilled to see the animals they had learned so much about up close in our very own gym, and Nick was especially impressed with the students’ knowledge of each of the animals.” Photo courtesy of: Eileen Ratto

Celebrating Peace

On September 21st, the students and staff of the West Babylon Junior High School arrived to school donning white clothing and peace signs in a show of solidarity for the International Day of Peace, otherwise known as World Peace Day. This day, first recognized in 1981, is one that celebrates peace, or more specifically, the absence of war. M o r n i n g announcements and

discussions of peaceful themes were presented throughout the day. Many teachers took the opportunity to explore the history of the day with their classes and used creative writing assignments to reinforce the message of peace. “The character education committee at the junior high school works hard to promote the social and emotional learning of our students,”

remarked Assistant Principal Jennifer Carere. “Mr. Payne and I believe that social-emotional learning promotes students’ academic success, health and wellbeing. In turn, it helps to ensure positive long- and short-term personal outcomes for students. The International Day of Peace is one of many celebrations that focus on the social-emotional wellbeing of our students.”

For her service project, Deanna aimed to educate the students of West Babylon Junior High School about birds indigenous to the region. She installed two bird feeders and two bird houses to attract birds for purposes of observation. Then she designed two murals with the likeness and descriptions of 23

birds commonly seen in Long Island. With the help of a couple friends she meticulously hand painted each of the birds. She also designed and constructed a podium that houses a booklet full of fun facts about each of these 23 birds.

The West Babylon Senior High School girls soccer teams came together in an act of generosity and kindness and showed their support for a fellow soccer player. A student-athlete on the Kings Park girls team, Lauren Lenardi, was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer two years ago and is no longer capable of playing soccer or attending school. Due to her illness and

treatment she was unable to have a Sweet 16 party. The Kings Park soccer program made the decision to dedicate the game against West Babylon to Lauren, as the game was being held on her birthday. When the West Babylon varsity and junior varsity teams were made aware of the plan, they agreed to each make a small donation to the Love for Lauren organization,

which is aimed at alleviating some of the financial strain of Lauren’s treatment. The West Babylon girls raised $655. The donation was presented to Lauren during a halftime birthday celebration that included cake and a soccer-themed birthday card designed by West Babylon art teacher James Fulton and signed by every member of the JV and varsity teams.

Students then created a preamble to the class constitution that corresponded with the class goals they had previously established and

developed rules to support those goals. Classes throughout South Bay Elementary School took part in similar lessons. A myriad of classes from grades one through five explored the history of the country, discussed rules and fairness, read books and poems on the subject and listened to songs such as School House Rocks The

I love October! It’s the month that kicks off the holiday season with wonderful charity events from my favorite rescue organizations. Long Island Golden Retriever Rescue has planned a great evening. Money that’s raised from ticket sales will go to the life saving efforts of this worthy organization. Can you think of a better way to spend your money on a night out? Here are the details. The Long Island Golden Retriever Rescue Inc. will host its Shop & Dine & Laugh Fundraiser on Thursday, October 18th, at the Holbrook Country Club, 700 Patchogue-Holbrook Road in Holbrook, from 6 to 9 p.m. There will be a buffet dinner, cake, coffee and soda, as well as a cash bar. You will have the opportunity to purchase Pawhaus Jewels, purses, Tastefully Simple products, unique holiday gifts, teas, Avon and more. There will also be psychic readings, a caricaturist, a dog slide show, a Chinese Auction, and comedian Moody McCarthy is scheduled to perform. The cost is $50 per person by October 4th (payable to LIGRR). The psychic was a big hit last year! She was booked through the entire evening. Be sure to sign up early for your spot. The caricaturist was also busy throughout the evening. Some people sat for their pictures, while others brought dog and family pictures for the caricaturist to draw so they could give them as holiday gifts. The cost is $15 – one person or dog, $25 – 2 people or dogs, $10 – each additional person or dog. Your $50 ticket includes a buffet dinner and supports Golden Rescue. Please mail your tax deductible check to LIGRR, P.O. Box 566, Plainview, NY 11803, by October 4th. Include $30 additional if you would like a psychic reading. I’M GLAD YOU ARE IN MY DASH I read of a man who stood to speak, At the funeral of a friend. He referred to the dates on his tombstone, From the beginning... to the end.

Complete the following:

He noted that first came his date of birth, And spoke the following date with tears, But he said what mattered most of all, Was the dash between those years. (1929-2004)

Name Address

For that dash represents all the time, That he spent alive on earth... And now only those who loved him, Know what that little line is worth.

For it matters not, how much we own; The cars... the house... the cash, What matters is how we live and love, And how we spend our dash. So think about this long and hard, Are there things you’d like to change? For you never know how much time is left, That can still be rearranged. If we could just slow down enough, To consider what’s true and real, And always try to understand, The way other people feel. And be less quick to anger, And show appreciation more, And love the people in our lives, Like we’ve never loved before. If we treat each other with respect, And more often wear a smile Remembering that this special dash, May last only a little while. So, when your eulogy’s being read, With your life’s actions to rehash Would you be proud of the things they say, About how you spent, your dash! If you have received this, it means that you are truly special to the one who sent this to you. I am glad that you’re in a part of my dash. Send this on to the ones you care about even if it means sending it back to the one who sent it to you.
