With a well-publicized opiate crisis gripping Long Island and a documented upswing in impaired driving and boating, LICADD Executive Director Dr. Jeffrey Reynolds says support for Start2Stop comes at the perfect time. “I am grateful to Assemblyman Sweeney for helping us make this program more accessible to local residents before their use of drugs and alcohol accelerates,” he said. “This proactive approach and timely intervention will help make Suffolk County a safer and healthier place.” “Long Island continues to experience a number of well-publicized tragedies due to substance abuse. The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) is set to receive a $20,000 grant from the NYS Office of Substance Abuse Services to support its addiction services in Suffolk County, thanks to the efforts of NYS Assemblyman Bob Sweeney. Specifically, the grant funds the expansion of LICADD’s Start2Stop program, which provides drug and alcohol information, solutionfocused counseling, peer support and treatment referrals to local residents of all ages. Start2Stop is a professionally facilitated support group that helps participants explore their substance abuse experiences and attitudes about drugs and alcohol, learn more about the biological/social and p s y c h o l o g i c a l consequences of use and understand the impact such use has had, and will have on their lives and relationships. The twelve week psycho-educational program is designed for individuals who have had some involvement with drug and/or alcohol use, but may not yet be ready to seek treatment or live a substance-free life. Participants may have experienced personal or professional consequences of their substance use, or may have been arrested for a non-violent low-level offense that involved the use of alcohol and/or illegal substances. The group is also perfect for those who are awaiting placement into inpatient or outpatient chemical dependency treatment. The program is 100% confidential and open to all regardless of ability to pay. Start2Stop participants are required to abstain from any drug or alcohol use while they are enrolled in the program. Those who are unable to remain abstinent during the

Of Taboo Topics & Talking Points By: Jamie Lynn Ryan They say that two of the most taboo topics are religion and politics, subjects that should be avoided at all costs when in mixed company. Before I had my own legitimate opinions on such matters, I have to admit that I never understood what the big deal was. Now I get it. Especially in this day and age, with the advent of social media and the ability to post all sorts of potentially controversial tweets, status updates, photos, videos, etc.… is it any wonder that tensions tend to build to the point of heated disagreements? One day you’re “friends” – the next you’re engaged in a bitter dispute over political ideals. Some things should simply be left for private discourse.

thing valid and eye opening. But merely shoving your unsolicited opinions down someone else’s throat is not only unnecessary, but borders on disrespectful. Voting booths are private for a reason, as are many religious institutions and practices. No one should feel obligated to defend his/her beliefs, so long as they are founded in some sort of informed, grounded philosophy. And if they aren’t, if they are merely based on a handful of regurgitated talking points or hearsay – well then, why would you want to recruit someone so ignorant to your side anyway? Better they are left to their own devices. Simply my opinion. Take it or leave it.

Personally, I have always felt that, as long as your opinion is well informed and based on some sort of intelligent foundation, there should really be no need to defend it. Believe what you believe; just don’t try to impose it upon others. That’s what the politicians are for. Those basic philosophies which make us different are precisely what make our society unique – and interesting. No need to change that. When things take a nasty turn – which they inevitably seem to – whether in the form of written discourse or verbal sparring, that’s when it has gone too far. A little healthy debate is fine, and should be encouraged even. We should all be open to other viewpoints – perhaps, in our own narrow-minded tunnel vision, we may have missed some-

Community Assessment
The Children’s Community Head Start and Early Head Start, a federally funded comprehensive early childhood program for income eligible families, recently released the results of its annual community assessment. The assessment measures trends related to poverty, hunger, health,
employment and housing status in Suffolk County. The information gathered enabled the Children’s Community Head Start to modify and enhance its programs and to plan services that meet the needs of the community. This year’s community assessment found that

In addition, the Hispanic/Latino population continues to grow, increasing the need for access to programs for English language learners. Suffolk County also reports an increase in the child abuse and maltreatment reports in Suffolk County; perhaps a reflection of economic stress on families and the need for support services. A complete report of the annual community assessment can be found on the program’s website: www.childrenscommunityh s.org. On Sunday, November 4th, from 1 to 3 p.m., Suffolk County Community College will host an Open House for prospective and accepted students at the following campus locations: Ammerman Campus in Selden Babylon Student Center Michael J. Grant Campus in Brentwood Sagtikos Arts & Sciences Building Eastern Campus in Riverhead - Montaukett Learning Resource Center Faculty and administrators will be on hand to offer detailed information regarding the more than 70 degree programs of study and 30 certificate programs available at the College. Educational and transitional services information for Veterans will also be available at the Open House. Financial aid representatives will discuss the grants and loans process, as well as the many scholarships available at Suffolk.
Members of the admissions staff will be in attendance to guide students and parents through the admissions process and to answer questions. The Open House program also includes useful information for recentlyaccepted students, who will have the opportunity to learn more about placement testing, academic advisement and financial aid. “Whether you have already been accepted to Suffolk County Community College or are a prospective student, making a personal visit to a campus is critical to the college decision making process,” said Joanne E. Braxton, Suffolk’s Dean of Enrollment. “We welcome students and their families to join us at our upcoming Open House, where they will find a dynamic overview of the academic programs and student support services available at the College. They will also have the opportunity
to tour the campus with student guides, who are available to answer questions based upon their own experience as students.” In light of the increased demand for access to community colleges, the best way to secure admission to Suffolk County Community College for the spring 2013 semester is to attend Open House and apply for admission early. The Ammerman Campus in Selden is located on Nicholls Road, north of Exit 62 of the LIE. The Michael J. Grant Campus is located on Wicks Road, south of Exit 53 of the LIE in Brentwood. The Eastern Campus is located on County Road 51, three miles south of the County’s Riverhead Center. Driving directions for all campus locations can be found at: http://www3.sunysuffolk.e du/About/Directions.asp.

Concussion of the brain is the very common injury that occurs under different circumstances. It can occur during the simple slip and fall accident, motor vehicle accident, but most commonly it does in sport. Over the last ten years a lot of research was done with an intention to explain why there is much higher incidence of neurological disorders affecting professional sport players. This study eventually revealed that a mild head injury causes pathological processes that eventually may lead to neurological diseases such as Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, Lou Gehrig’s, etc. During the mild head injury or mild concussion of the brain, the symptoms of the actual injury could be transient and brief, and eventually this condition becomes virtually asymptomatic or having very subtle symptoms. Those symptoms could be just a mild headache, excessive fatigue, excessive or lack of sleep, problem with concentration. Since many symptoms of concussion are brief and may not be present on the second or third day after the concussion, it will leave very little tools to help a doctor to determine if the player is ready to go back to play. Current thinking is that optimal recovery of concussed students occurs when there is cognitive, physical, and emotional rest following injury. Additionally, research has shown that 92% of second injuries occur in the first week following the initial injury, and the goal is to allow adequate recovery time before allowing a student to risk re-injury. Pressure to return an athlete before it is safe can be intense from parents and athletes. Primary care physicians are being asked to assist in the process of keeping injured children safe by remaining objective and withholding participation until it is deemed safe with a reasonable degree of medical certainty.
return to school), but we anticipate a similar slow exertional challenge as we see in RTP. The graduated steps begin after the student has a medical clearance to return to academics, and is symptom free off pain killing medicines for a full 24 hours. RTL should be an individualized steady progression with the parent’s checking the child daily for a return of symptoms and alerting you if the student is struggling so you can provide appropriate requests for medical accommodations to the school as needed. Unlike a RTP, the RTL might start at any level and progress at a rate individualized to the student’s needs and tolerance. Steps might be skipped as tolerated and might look something like this: Students with reasonable recovery times typically will get accommodations within the school by the principal. Students with protracted recovery beyond about 10 weeks, a school quarter, are likely eligible for a 504 plan or an IEP, and you might be asked to write a request to support the family at that time.

The Concussion Act of NYS took effect July 1, 2012, and requires schools to: • Educate parents, athletes, coaches, athletic trainers, physical education teachers, and school nurses on concussion, • Remove observed or suspected concussed students from play based on signs and symptoms, • Withhold further participation until evaluated by, and received written and signed authorization to return to activities from a licensed physician. • Obtain physician clearance, and when the athlete has been symptom-free off pain killing medicines for a minimum of 24 hours and allow them to begin a monitored progressive six phase return to play. MAKING A CLINICAL DETERMINATION • Symptoms: somatic (e.g. headache, nausea, dizziness), cognitive (e.g. feeling in a fog), and/or emotional (e.g. liability)
• Behavioral changes: irritability, personality changes • Cognitive impairment: Hard time concentrating, trouble remembering, not feeling themselves, being confused, thinking speed slowed down, taking a longer time to react • Sleep disturbance: drowsiness, insomnia GRADUATED RETURN TO PHYSICAL EXERTION AND ACTIVITY OR RETURN TO PLAY (RTP) This is a six step gradual return to activity. The RTP protocol may not start until an athlete is completely symptom-free for a full 24 hours off pain killing medicines, and must remain symptom-free for 24 hours following each stage before progressing further. RECOVERY Average recovery following concussion is about a week to ten days; protracted recovery with post concussion syndrome is after 21 days. Young teenage girls often have protracted recovery more than any other group. RETURN TO LEARN (RTL) More information will be forthcoming about RTL (cognitive

Physical Therapists are experts in evaluating and designing treatment programs for persons with osteoporosis. Education of safe movement along with stretching, weight bearing and resistive strength programs are proven over time to improve osteoporosis and increase bone mass. While it’s important to perform a full body exercise program, the key is to focus on those areas that have a high chance of having a fracture due to osteoporosis; hips, spine and wrists. Posture, body mechanics, improvement of balance and fall prevention is also a key component in reducing the risk of fracture. Remember to avoid exercises with; excessive spine forward bending (e.g. abdominal crunches), excessive spine and hip

The Long Island Maritime Museum recently announced that their 22nd Annual Boat Burning will take place on Friday, October 26th from 5 to 9 p.m. The rain date is October 27th. The Boat Burning, which is held on the grounds of the museum, marks the height of fall with an event for the entire family. Admission will be $5, with children under five free. Each year, the Museum receives a donation of a large, wooden boat that is in a condition of being beyond repair. Loosely based on the Norse tradition of a Viking Funeral, the boat is placed in the center of the museum’s property and set ablaze by the West Sayville Fire Department to the delight of the many families in attendance. “This unique annual event has become a fall tradition in our community,” said the Museum’s Executive Director Steve Jones. “In addition to hosting Long Island’s largest bonfire, it’s a wonderful opportunity for us to showcase the outstanding work that our boat shop volunteers do, by raffling off one of their beautiful creations.” This year’s raffle boat is a handmade wooden 15’ Skerry by Chesapeake Light Craft. This attractive boat, constructed by volunteers at the Museum’s Moonbeam/Grooms Boat Shop, is extremely versatile in that it can be utilized either as a sail boat or a row boat. Raffle tickets are $5.00 a piece or (5) for $20.00 and can be purchased right up until the time of the drawing. Tickets are also available for purchase prior to the event. Attendees are encouraged to wear Halloween costumes. In addition to live music, there will be a featured performance by special guests at 5:30 p.m. The Long Island Maritime Museum, which operates under a license agreement with Suffolk County Parks, serves to preserve Long Island's maritime history and heritage for educational purposes.

Come Root For Your Favorite Teams... GO JETS & GIANTS!!!
Developmental Disabilities Institute (DDI), the leading service provider for children and adults with autism on Long Island, hosted its DDI Walk and Motorcycle Run for Autism, on September 23rd at the Holtsville Ecology Center. DDI raise over $35,000 to help fund the vital programs and services DDI provides to over 5,000 families served by their educational and residential programs, adult day training and medical services. “This event is all about coming together as a community and helping those who cannot help themselves,” said CoChairmen of the event Brian Brunjes and Charlie Hudson. “This year we not only met that goal, but we exceeded it. It is inspiring to see the generosity of a community come together and lend themselves to help benefit thousands of Long Islanders.” Hundreds of Long Islanders came out for the scenic 5K Walk through Suffolk County's Holtsville Ecology Park followed by a festival in the park complete with picnic lunch, music, games, a petting zoo and more. This year event also included a Motorcycle run sponsored by Hansen Home Designs. U.S. Olympian and Sachem alum Maria Michta helped kick the walk off as the Grand Marshall. Maria recently competed in the women’s 20K race walk event at the summer games in London. “I am honored to be invited to DDI’s Walk and Motorcycle Run as the Grand Marshall,” stated Maria. “As an athlete, DDI’s walk presents a wonderful opportunity to work out while also giving back to the community. I would like to thank DDI for this opportunity as well as everyone in attendance for their support. ASDs are unfortunately all too common and while scientists and doctors continue to search for answers it is important that we as a community do our part to support those families who struggle with the frustrating realties of these disorders on a daily basis.” 244813N1010

Bracelet Benefit design resembling one of the bracelets in the Brighton line that women have loved collecting. The design is like two bracelets in one, it can be worn with pink-accented links or reversed to wear as an allsilver bracelet. Its dangling heart charm and pink ribbon with touches of light rose Swarovski crystals show support for everyone who has been
touched by breast cancer. “This bracelet symbolizes hope and raises awareness, each one of us can make a difference when we act together in support of women fighting breast cancer”, said Good Samaritan Hospital’s Breast Health Center Coordinator Bonnie Edsall, RN.

20 th Annual Fall
Continued From Page 6 school districts in Central Suffolk County. Families are eligible based on household incomes that are below the federal poverty line. Homeless and foster children, and children with disabilities, are also eligible. In addition to a high-quality and structured classroom experience, children benefit from health and nutrition services, family involvement, parent training and strong relationships with local school districts, thus aiding their transition to Kindergarten. According to the 2009 Long Island Index research report prepared by the Rauch Foundation, early childhood education “prepares children for school, and when provided in a high quality program, it can reduce grade repetition, drop out rates and juvenile delinquency.” The report further explains that high quality programs can lower future costs that the public school would otherwise assume.

Memory writes on every page of the calendar – here a birthday, there a holiday, further on a wedding date. In the wake of death, those precious days bear a bittersweet tinge, a pang that the celebration they mark will never be the same. Most of those dates are warmed by tender recollections: some are written darker than the rest. Whether this is your first turn around the calendar – or one of many since your loss, these dates loom dark on the horizon. Tears that you thought were behind you swell again, with them comes a terrible loneliness. These days will not be wished away, even if you pull the covers over you and wait for the sun to set. Perhaps nothing you can do will make them easy for you, but there is a lot you can do to make them easier to endure. You can meet these milestones head-on and make them into an experience, which will help you toward a brighter tomorrow. Reach out to others who may have the same feelings about the day. Don’t hesitate to present your needs and ask for companionship and help. I am one of those types of people who always grins and bears it and goes it alone. But on several occasions when the burden was to heavy and I did ask for help, I was so glad I had someone to lean on and help me through my difficult days. Don’t be as thick as I am and don’t be afraid to ask for help from all those friends who said, “If there is ever anything I can do to help. 244890N1010

Babylon High School Principal Al Cirone announced on October 3rd that Babylon seniors Delaney Cassidy, Kelly Corcoran and Christopher Fenton have been named Commended Students in the 2013 National Merit Scholarship Program. To earn the Commended distinction, students had to place among the top five percent of the 1.5 million who entered the
Book Rentals
competition. Students entered the program by taking the 2011 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, and a select group of approximately 34,000 across the nation were officially “commended.” A letter of commendation from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation was presented by Mr. Cirone, Superintendent
Richard Rozakis and Babylon High School guidance counselor Suzanne Murphy to the three talented Babylon seniors who qualified. “We are all so proud of our Commended Students,” Ms. Murphy said. “It is a great honor, and we look forward to hearing what colleges they plan to attend in the fall.” Photo courtesy of: Eric Holden, Syntax

The Common Core
New York State teachers plan lessons based upon a series of state learning standards that clearly and consistently explore what students are expected to learn at every grade level. In January 2011, the Board of Regents approved additions to these standards, creating a new set of New York State Common Core Learning Standards for English Language Arts and Literacy, as well as for Mathematics and PreKindergarten. As such, it was expected that all schools would have their curricula aligned to the Common Core by the start of the 2012-2013 school year.
The West Babylon School District staff prepared for these changes in a myriad of ways, beginning by familiarizing themselves with the new standards at w w w. e n g a g e n y. o r g . During the summer months, the State Education Department (SED) began the process of rolling out curriculum modules, each containing a collection of units that provide guidelines for grades K-5. Additional modules for the upper grades will be published by the SED shortly. The district plans to use and build upon the models provided throughout the year. Despite the fact that the state has not yet provided a comprehensive K-12 guide, the district’s Professional Development Plan Committee has been meeting with consistency to finalize a plan for implementation that will support the learning needs of students in every grade. The district’s K-5 teachers have already begun using the enVisions

Math program by Pearson. This program is aligned with the Common Core Standards. District staff will be exploring the new curricula and the Common Core further during professional development sessions scheduled throughout the fall and during the superintendent’s conference days in November and January. A main focus of the Common Core implementation is the alignment of assessments with the Common Core. This year, the ELA and math assessments in grades 3-8, as well as the NYSESLAT, have been aligned to the new state standards. “The SED has presented every educator in the state with an abundance of changes,” explained Christine Tona, the district’s executive director for curriculum and instruction. “We all must do everything we can to educate ourselves so that we can guide our students toward success.”
Six student-musicians at North Babylon High School have been selected for the Suffolk Chapter of the New York State Council of Administrators of Music Education’s annual All-County Festival at Northport High School on November 16th. Students are selected based on outstanding
performances given at the New York State School Music Association Solo and Ensemble Festival held the previous spring. High school senior Brian Manzo will play the euphonium in the AllCounty Band, while seniors Thomas Perticono (Tenor II), Katie Schneider (Soprano I),
William Zangerle (Bass II) and Daniel Zuaro (Bass II) and junior Carolyn Mistretta (Soprano II) were selected to sing in the All-County Choruses. Additionally, Brian and Carolyn were chosen as alternates in the AllCounty festival for piano and vocals.
