Deer Park High School Hosts First Book Fair

Deer Park High School recently hosted its firstever book fair in the school library, making for a few days of enthusiasm centered around reading. Partnering with local Huntington bookstore The Next Chapter, students visited the library, browsed

through a wide selection of new and popular titles, and discussed their choices with librarian Evan DeNaro and ELA teachers. Many students discovered new favorite authors and titles, and some selected books as gifts for their families. “A book fair really builds

a buzz around reading, and helps us with our growing BookLove initiative,” Director of ELA, Reading and Library Justin Uliano said. “Students embraced the days, and we were much more successful than we anticipated.”

The tri-annual and award winning Long Island Restaurant Week is warming up the winter season with an opportunity to bring customers into Long Island restaurants in the off season! In a recent survey sent to diners, over 70% said they are very likely to dine out during Restaurant Week again in the future, and more than 45% said they dine out twice during the promotion. The Winter edition will take place from Sunday, January 26th to Sunday, February 2nd, 2025, with several prix fixe options. Restaurants may offer a $24 two-course lunch, a $29 three-course dinner menu, a $39 three-course dinner menu and/or a $46 threecourse dinner prix fixe. They may offer one, two or any combination of the four prix fixes during the promotion. Each participant is required

to offer three options per course (appetizer, entrée and dessert) for dinner. Participating restaurants MUST offer the $24 twocourse lunch prix fixe, $29, $39 or $46 three-course dinner prix fixe all night every night they are open (or during lunch hours) from Sunday to Sunday, with the exception of Saturday when it may only be offered until 7 p.m. Back by popular demand, the Gift Card Giveaway returns for the winter promotion and diners have the option to enter to win one of three gift cards to redeemed at a participating restaurant of their choice. State Funding Keeps Adventureland Spinning Forward New York State will help Adventureland remain a Fireball, as “Long Island’s Amusement Park since 1962” is set to receive $205,600 in funding for its five-year improvement project, Sen. Monica R. Martinez announced. The $10 million to $15 million modernization plan will introduce several new attractions to the park while retiring some long-time favorites. But don’t expect too much Turbulence from those closures. In their place

will be the new thrill ride, Top Spin; a Miniature Pirate Ship; a refurbished Viking Voyage; and the installation of a water main that will support additional attractions, all made possible in part by this grant. Funding is being provided through a Market New York grant, a program that supports regionally themed marketing projects that promote tourism destinations, attractions and special events, as well as tourism facility capital

improvement projects. “Adventureland not only holds fond memories for nearly every Long Island child and family, but it also holds an important place in our regional economy,” said Sen. Martinez. “It employs over 650 local workers who keep the Train, and other rides, moving throughout the park’s operating season. Supporting Adventureland’s improvement is good for patrons, impactful for our community, and beneficial

for New York State.” The upgrades are expected to be Musik to the ears of visitors to the adventure park, which has operated rides, games, and attractions for children and adults of all ages on its East Farmingdale campus for more than 60 years. The multi-phased redevelopment project began earlier this year and is expected to continue until 2028, with park employment projected to increase by 10% upon completion.

Book Vending Machine Comes To Robert Frost Middle School Students at Deer Park’s Robert Frost Middle School were very curious as a new vending machine was installed in the lobby. They soon discovered that this machine dispenses books to students as a reward from their English language arts teachers and to Project Wisdom winners each month. The vending machine and books are a part of the larger BookLove initiative at Robert Frost, encouraging reading throughout the school. Securing the vending machine was the result of efforts by Executive Director of Secondary Education and Human Resources Jeanne Kozlowsky, Associate Principal James Henry and library media specialist Anne Lotito-Schuh, through donations and grant funding. “This vending machine builds student excitement for lifelong reading habits, and it’s a daily reminder how much students really love books,” Director of ELA Justin Uliano said.
