Recipe Of The Week: Take Hot Chocolate To The Next Level

People tend to think of sipping ice cream floats in the middle of summer when temperatures are soaring. Ice cream floating in a bubbling base of cola or root beer can be a welcome treat on a hot day. However, floats can be just as delicious when the weather chills, particularly when ice cream enhances rich and decadent hot chocolate. For this “Hot Chocolate Float” from “Chocolate: Over 100 Temptingly-Tasty Dishes” (Love Food) by the Love Food editors, coconut and chocolate-flavored scoops of ice cream bob and melt in creamy hot chocolate. Feel free to use your favorite flavors of ice cream to make this recipe your own, and you can even make this drink a boozy version with the inclusion of a shot of flavored vodka.

Directions:

Pour the milk into a saucepan. Break the chocolate into pieces and add to the saucepan with the sugar. Stir over low heat until the chocolate has melted, the sugar has dissolved and the mixture is smooth. Remove from the heat.

Put 1 scoop of coconut ice cream into each of 4 heatproof glasses, top with a scoop of chocolate ice cream, then repeat the layers.

Pour the chocolate flavored milk into the glasses, top with whipped cream, and serve immediately.

A Healthy Approach To Weight Loss

Though people attempting to lose weight may love a quick fix or magic pill that could shed excess pounds, successful efforts that produce long-term weight loss generally take considerable time and effort. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says people who lose weight at a gradual, steady pace tend to keep the weight off. The CDC advises individuals to aspire to lose one to two pounds each week

Working in concert with a doctor or a registered dietician is one of the ways to ensure that the weight loss experience is successful and healthy. In addition to following the advice of a professional, these tips can help.

• Think of it as a lifestyle change. Managing weight is a lifelong commitment. That means that following a short-term diet may not prove a successful way to lose weight and keep it off in the long run. It’s important to put strategies in place that will help change habits

that may be contributing to weight gain.

• Set short-term goals. Certainly the overall goal may be to lose a set number of pounds. But having that goal in the distance may make it seem less achievable. Rather, set small goals throughout a weight loss journey. This can be something like a plan to replace sugary drinks with water, or to exercise three days a week instead of being sedentary most of the time.

• Be sure the time is right. Some people jump in at the start of the new year, even if they are not mentally ready to commit or lack the time to make the overhaul necessary to affect change. Begin a weight-loss journey when you have a strong desire to change habits and are not distracted by other pressures.

• Tame stress as much as possible. High levels of stress can derail weightloss plans. Many people

Pravato To Host Free Property Tax Assessment Grievance Workshops

Oyster Bay Town Receiver of Taxes Jeffrey Pravato will host four free Property Tax Assessment Grievance Workshops for residents looking to acquire information on how to challenge their 2026-2027 property tax assessments. The workshops will be held both in the morning and evening to help accommodate all residents.

“While Nassau County determines your assessed value, we in Town government want to make sure you know that you have a right as a homeowner to challenge your assessment. Remember, your assessment can only be lowered as the result of a challenge – it can never be raised – and this workshop helps you challenge for free,” said Receiver of Taxes Pravato. “If you are a homeowner who disagrees

with the assessed value of your property, I invite you to attend a Property Tax Assessment Workshop, as the property tax grievance deadline of March 3rd is approaching.”

The Property Tax Grievance Workshops are scheduled as follows:

· Tuesday, January 28th, 7pm at the Hicksville Community Center, 28 W. Carl St.

· Wednesday, January 29th, 10am at the Hicksville Community Center, 28 W. Carl St.

· Thursday, January 30th, 10am at Oyster Bay Town Hall, 54 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay

· Tuesday, February 4th, 7pm at Oyster Bay Town Hall, 54 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay In January, Nassau County notified residents of their home’s tentative

assessed value for the 20262027 School Tax period and the 2027 General Tax period. Any residents who did not receive the notice may view it online at www. mynassauproperty.com or contact their County Legislator.

At the workshop, Receiver of Taxes Pravato will answer questions and show residents how to use online tools to file an “Application for Correction of Property Tax Assessment” online or via mail. There is no requirement to pay a law firm or agency to file a grievance. For those unable to attend the workshop, Receiver of Taxes Pravato offers an online video at www.oysterbaytown.com/ grievancevideo. For more information, contact the Tax Office at (516) 624-6400 or visit www.oysterbaytown. com.

turn to foods, beverages and other unhealthy habits as a means to coping with stress. The Cleveland Clinic says stress raises cortisol levels, which increases insulin production. The resulting low blood sugar makes people crave sugary, fatty foods. The Mayo Clinic suggests speaking with a health care professional if you need help taking

charge of stress.

• Change your perceptions. Focus on what you can eat rather than what you can’t eat. Healthy weight loss means finding balance and enjoying the foods you love, but not going overboard. Restricting any one food or food group could lead you on a path to feeling resentful or even binging on unhealthy items.

• Don’t skip meals. Seriously restricting food intake is not healthy at all and could lead to fluctuations in weight. An eating pattern that includes a cycle of weight loss and weight gain can contribute to an increased risk of coronary heart disease, says Better Health, a resource of the Australian Department of Health. Plan meals to meet your daily calorie count, being sure to avoid skipping any during the day. Healthy weight loss takes time and requires changing habits over the long haul.
