7 Deadly Mistakes That Will Cost You Thousands When You Sell Your Home LONG ISLAND – A new report has just been released which reveals 7 costly mistakes that most homeowners make when selling their home, and a 9 Step System that can help you sell your home fast and for the most amount of money. This industry report shows clearly how the traditional ways of selling homes have become increasingly less and less effective in today’s market. The fact of the matter is that fully three quarters of homesellers don’t get what they want for their home and become disillusioned and - worse - financially disadvantaged when they put their home on the market.
As this report uncovers, most homesellers make 7 deadly mistakes that cost them literally thousands of dollars. The good news is that each and every one of these mistakes is entirely preventable. In answer to this issue, industry insiders have prepared a free special report entitled “The 9 Step System to Get Your Home Sold Fast and For Top Dollar”. To hear a brief recorded message about how to order your free copy of this report, call 1-877-263-6397 and enter ID #1000. You can call anytime, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week . Call NOW to find out how you can get the most money for your home.

Everyone got into the spirit, including teachers, administrators, students, custodians, clerical staff and secretaries. “Everyone enjoyed the day and it was great to see so many people smiling,” said Li. “Coworkers sent singing grams to friends, some sent multiple singing grams to one teacher to ‘lighten them up.’ The principal even got one singing gram from the student council and ended up listening to all five songs.” For the student council, many of whose members are heavily involved in the school play and music department, this was an important effort that brought joy and laughter to the entire building. “Boosting morale and making this long hard winter just a little bit more enjoyable is what student council is all about,” said Li.

Of Keynotes & Conquering Fears By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Giant sigh of relief. I did it. I delivered a 20 minute (well, more like 10-minute) keynote address in front of roughly 100 high school journalism students and former professors. And I survived. What’s the big deal, you ask? Given that my profession consists mainly of the written word, the spoken word has always presented a bit of a problem for me. It’s not so much a weak point as a giant source of anxiety. Give me something to read, and I’m probably going to race through it and a relatively low volume, barely glancing up. All words will be pronounced correctly, with proper inflection and expression, but it will be over before you know it – and there had better be a powerful microphone handy. Ask me to ad lib and simply speak off the top of my head in front of a group of people – be it 3 or 3,000 – and, well, let’s just say most people know not to even ask. Granted, I have gotten much better at this. Back in high school, I used to dread the words “Oral
Presentation” on any syllabus, and would work myself up into a frenzy of sorts in the days and hours leading up to said presentation. Usually, it came off fairly well; but there were definitely a handful of occasions when my ill-advised attempts to toss the notecards and “wing it” went awry. Suddenly, I would lose all track of what I was saying, where I was going with my “point” (more like tangent) and how on earth to get back on track. Of course, seeing dozens of your fellow classmates staring blankly back at you never helped the situation either. Being a Journalism major in college, I’m sure you can all imagine how thrilled I was to learn that public speaking would be a large part of the curriculum. There was even an entire Oral Communication course I was required to take…what luck! All joking aside, I did learn to slow it down a bit, enunciate, project, make eye contact (well, occasionally anyway) and – dare I say it – even to ad lib a bit from time to time. Not too much. Just enough.
When I was first asked to deliver the keynote for the LIU Post Media Arts Best Of High School Journalism Awards, all those nerves came flooding back. Memories of my valedictory address in high school, complete with my Guidance Counselor asking, “Um, Jamie? Do you need gum or a mint or something? You look like you’re going to be sick…” just prior to my getting ready to go on stage seemed fresh. But that was almost thirteen years ago. A lot has changed. People grow. They overcome their fears. Those once-impossible tasks seem suddenly attainable. In fact, that was the overall reaction of the high school students to my keynote address – Wow, we can do this too. She was just like us, and look what she’s achieved… The dream can become a reality. That, I think, was the greatest compliment anyone could hope to receive. If, by getting over my fear of public speaking and being able to convey my message, I was able to influence even one high school student to pursue his/her dream of becoming a journalist… well, that’s the biggest reward of all.

Thaddaeus Hill, Executive Director of Timothy Hill Children’s Ranch, Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco and members of the Sheriff’s Youth Reentry Task Force conducted a ribbon-cutting ceremony for a new home designated for homeless youth who will transition from a special rehabilitative program at the Riverhead Correctional Facility. Youth placed in the home will be engaged in a new initiative at Timothy Hill Children’s Ranch called The Right Path. The collaboration represents one of the most innovative jail-tocommunity anti-recidivism efforts in the nation. During the ceremony at Timothy Hill Children’s Ranch, DeMarco stated, “This haven for formerly incarcerated youth represents the work of an entire community of more than 40 nonprofit agencies, volunteers and service providers who have joined with Timothy Hill Children’s Ranch to ensure that our youth can stay on the right path once they leave our facility.”

Creative Expressions When I Can’t Sleep... The Gallery

The dark streets can be dangerous, But exercise is good for the body and soul, There is not much activity because of the time, Exercise is invigorating especially when it is cold… My wife tells me how dangerous it can be, So I try to avoid walking in the wee hours, But when I can’t sleep the exercise is great, It gives me strength and power… A body that is inactive is not good for the mind and soul, As we age we must remain active and not become lazy, The aches and pains always disappear when I exercise, My mind avoids “oldtimers” and becomes sharp and not hazy…
Rebirth By: Andrew Kessler, Massapequa We refuse to love others See our flaws within them In the mirror these same traits we admire Shatter the reflection Sweep away the broken deception In front of you a blank canvas Take a brush, imagine your reborn soul With each stroke, create the life you wish to live Embrace this new world Gone the scars of yesteryear Welcome to paradise naive virgin How does it feel to truly live and love again?

from repeat exposure to loud noises – at concerts, nightclubs, sporting events, crowded restaurants, loud workplaces and so on. In many ways, hearing loss is the unintended by-product of life fully lived—that is, before we knew better about how to protect our hearing in such noisy environments. But when ignored and left unaddressed, hearing loss robs from life. It isolates, it debilitates, and it diminishes quality of life and it even takes a toll on financial well being, by cutting into earnings potential. Perhaps, most notable, unaddressed hearing loss creates barriers and unnecessarily strains even the best of relationships. But listen up now! It doesn’t have to, and it shouldn’t. The overwhelming majority of people with hearing loss

Americans love their electronics, smart phones, tablet computers, digital cameras, HDTV’s, e-book readers, MP3 players, and hearing aids (oops, those words ‘hearing aids’ are old, lets re-name them). That’s right – new, sleek, stateof-the-art, life-altering hearing instruments (that’s better). As contoured and futuristic as the most highly styled electronic device – or so discreet that they are virtually invisible – today’s hearing instruments are the high-tech “anti-aging” tool that can help keep life-long Gen-Xers and baby boomers socially, cognitively and physically active. At its best, technology offers solutions, enriches life, and makes us more efficient. Today’s modern hearing instruments do all three. For more than 34 million Americans hearing loss is part of life. Most frequently, it results
can benefit from hearing instruments. Eight out of ten hearing instrument users say they are satisfied with the changes that have occurred in their lives, specifically, due to their hearing instruments – from how they feel about themselves to the positive effects hearing instruments have on their social and work lives. High-performance technology and style have merged with durability and ease-of-use when it comes to today’s hearing instruments. The options are so varied, in fact, that there is an attractive solution for just about anyone; today’s high-tech hearing aids can be discreet or as visible as you like. Top designer’s offer styles that appeal to the fashion conscious, the trendsetter, party-goer, the intellectual, or sports enthusiast. Now designer styles and colors can make the average guy who is tired of arguing with his wife and kids about the volume on the TV feel more comfortable and confident wearing hearing instruments. Simply put, today’s hearing instruments transcend the old-world notion about hiding a condition as common as hearing loss. Whether they sit discreetly unnoticeable inside your ear canal, or wrap aesthetically around the contour of your outer ear like the latest fashion accessory, today’s highperformance hearing instruments selectively amplify life. They do unabashedly send the message: “I’m too young and full of life to stop doing the things I love best.” If you think you or someone you care about is struggling with unaddressed hearing loss ask yourself, or them, these questions: • Do you seem to have trouble hearing on the telephone? • Is it more difficult for you to follow conversations when two or more people are talking at the same time? • Do you keep turning up the TV or radio? • Do you sometimes miss a telephone ring or doorbell? • Do you seem more irritated or tired at big family or social gatherings? RAINBOW HAIR - Kindergartners at Ruth C. Kinney Elementary School had fun participating in the school’s recent Rainbow Hair project. Art teacher Dana Belfiore and music teacher Malgorzata Strzelecka composed a special “Rainbow Hair” song for the children to sing during music class, and they created rainbow hair paintings in art. This vibrant cross-curricular project was designed to help the students learn about the order of the colors in a rainbow as well as how to read color words in class. Photo by: Greg Fasolino, Syntax

Award Recipients Honored
Islip Town Supervisor Tom Croci and the Islip Town Board recently honored several members of Islip’s African-American community for their significant contributions to the Islip community at-large. Each of the honorees has dedicated their lives toward pursuing socially conscious goals in the Islip community. Those honored at Islip’s 2013 Black History Month Awards Ceremony were Carlton Brown, Evelyn Daily, Sabrina C’Aire Lacy, and Pastor Roderick Pearson. “Islip has a proud heritage of being a Town where people of many different backgrounds come together to build their lives,” said Supervisor Croci. “The sacrifices and triumphs of these honorees have enriched Islip’s culture, fed Islip’s poor, and educated generations of residents on civic values.” The honorees were presented with their awards at a recent Town Board meeting, where the artwork of Carlton Brown
was on display. Mr. Brown specializes in photography, and has made a significant contribution to Islip’s cultural diaspora. Evelyn Daily was honored for her tireless community activism. Ms. Daily specializes in using her doll-making talents to create opportunities for disadvantaged people in the community. Her dolls have raised money for numerous charities and have at times simply been given away to children in need of a little extra care. Sabrina C’Aire Lacy served 20 years as a sergeant in the U.S. Army before settling on Long Island to raise her family. Despite raising her own daughters and building her career, she continued to care for her larger family: the veterans of the Islip community. Today she is the Commander of VFW Post 6431 in Brentwood, where her compassion for veterans in our community is exercised every day. Pastor Roderick Pearson’s record of service to our community is unmatched and has
transcended geographical boundaries. Mr. Pearson currently leads St. Mark Remnant Ministries, based in Central Islip. He is presently the President of the Islip Branch of the NAACP, Chairman of Clergy Liaison for 2nd Congressional District Congressman, Steve Israel, Chairman of the Youth Council of the Suffolk County Workforce Investment Board, former Chairman of the Suffolk County African American Advisory Board and a member of the Suffolk County Black Clergy Advisory Board. In September, 2010, Pastor Pearson had the distinguished honor of delivering the invocation for the opening session of the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington D.C. “Each of these distinguished members of our community are worthy of our praise, and we only hope for many years of their continued dedication to our area,” said Supervisor Croci.
BEST BUDDIES - The East Islip Middle School Best Buddies Club hosted an afterschool mixer with Hauppauge Middle School’s Best Buddies Club on February 15th. Guided by co-advisers Valerie Butler and Christine O’Connell, students from both schools made crafts, played games, ate pizza and cupcakes for dinner, and enjoyed each other’s company while making new friends. Both clubs look forward to meeting up again on June 7th, when they will venture out to attend a Long Island Ducks baseball game together. Photo by: Greg Fasolino, Syntax
Celebrating Service
The Town Board this week hosted a ceremony honoring some of our longest serving firefighters from 11 local Fire Departments. Long time firefighters who have dedicated 50, 60 or 70 years of volunteer service were invited by Islip officials to be publicly honored for their commitment to safe neighborhoods. Collectively, the honorees have more than 1,245 years of volunteerism in fire service. Councilman Steve Flotteron welcomed the honorees and the hundreds of firefighters who came e to support their fellow members. The firemen came from almost every volunteer Fire Department in the Town and each was given a Maltese cross plaque from the Town officials as a thank you for their dedication. “In recent years this traditional Islip town ceremony was forgotten, but this Town Board felt a need to resurrect it to give these men the recognition
they deserve for their halfcentury of service,” said Councilman Flotteron. The honorees came from all walks of life, many of whom joined their local departments when they were still teenagers. In the early 1960’s, when the youngest of the honorees would have joined their department, Islip’s population was roughly 173,000; today it is over 330,000. The oldest honoree in attendance, Edward Kennelly of the Bayport Fire Department, joined at a time when Islip’s population was just 52,000. “Although they have seen Islip transform and change over of the years, their commitment to their fellow residents has remained,” said Supervisor Tom Croci. Complete List of Honorees (for 50 years of service unless noted otherwise): · Bay Shore Fire Department: William Murray; John Trocchio. · Bayport Fire
Department: Albert Wageli, Jr. (70 years); Edward Kennelly (70 years); Frank Meyer (60 years); Clarence Rosche; Frank Norton; George Sutherland. · Brentwood Fire Department: Donald Leun; William Feely. · East Brentwood Fire Department: Samuel Klee. · East Islip Fire Department: John O’Keefe. · Great River Fire Department: Henry Liebbrandt (60 years); Rudy Koubek (65 years). · Hauppauge Fire Department: G. Warren Holtje. · Islip Fire Department: Ronald W. Pfuhl; James Galletto. · Lakeland Fire Department: John Lombardo; Rudy Hanak (70 years); Raymond Stultz Sr. · West Islip Fire Department: Louis Caggioni; William Troy. · West Sayville Fire Department: Edward Slavik.
SHARPSHOOTER SUCCESS - Islip Town Councilman Steve Flotteron was recently joined by Supervisor Tom Croci and Councilman Anthony Senft at the Town’s Annual Youth Sharpshooter Basketball competition. The annual event is hosted by the local Elks Lodge Associations, and began as a way to encourage anti-drug attitudes among young athletes in the Town.

Volunteer Recognized East Islip Middle School eighth-grader Victoria Goldfader was recently honored for her exemplary volunteerism with a President’s Volunteer Service Award. The award, presented by the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards on behalf of President Barack Obama, recognizes Americans of all ages who have volunteered significant amounts of time in order to serve their communities and their country. Goldfader participated in the Spirit of Community program this
year as a representative of East Islip Middle School, donating an extensive number of hours to the endeavor. Sponsored by Prudential Financial in partnership with the Reston, Va.-based National Association of Secondary School Principals, the Spirit of Community Awards program honors students across America for outstanding community service activities. More than 370,000 young persons have been considered for these awards – judged on such criteria as personal
initiative, creativity, effort, impact and personal growth – since the program’s 1995 inception. Principal Mark Bernard presented Goldfader with the President’s Volunteer Service Award certificate and a letter from President Obama at a celebratory breakfast held at the middle school on February 26th. She was accompanied by her parents, David and Nancy Goldfader. Photo by: Greg Fasolino, Syntax

East Islip High School’s Chris Chambers earned his 100th career win as a varsity wrestler during a Section XI finals match at the recent Dr. L Robert “Doc” Fallot Memorial Suffolk County Wrestling Championship. With an unbeaten 41-0 record, Chambers pancaked opponent Nick Weber of Kings Park in the 195-pound class, recording a fall at 2:32 to earn his championship. He had earlier defeated Sachem East’s Cristian Nunez. The Division I competition, which took place February 12th and 13th at both Hofstra University in Hempstead and Walt Whitman High School in Huntington Station, saw East Islip come in second with 138 points, just behind firstplace Sachem East (156) and ahead of Rocky Point (118), Brentwood (111) and Huntington (96.5). Other East Islip wrestlers also fared well in the Fallot tournament. Eric Adon earned second place with a win over Sachem East’s Anthony Pistone. Jesse Dellavecchia (99), Dennis Ferro (145) and Dan Hayden (285) all finished in third-place in their respective weight classes, with Hayden decisioning John Glenn’s Edwin Rubio, 6-3. Zak Smalls came in fifth in the
160-pound class. Chambers, Dellavecchia and Ferro (the latter two qualifying as wild cards) will be representing East Islip at New York’s high school wrestling state tournament. The tournament, held at the Times Union Center in Albany on February 22nd
and 23rd, will feature 480 student-athletes from approximately 400 New York State public high schools along with qualifiers from the New York City Public School Athletic League and the Catholic High School Athletic Association.
