East Islip students have once again excelled in the annual PTA Reflections arts contest, led by middle schooler Kerri Kolensky, who won the Suffolk County Award of Excellence In Literature from the Suffolk Region PTA, and Spencer Kavanagh of John F. Kennedy Elementary School, who won the Suffolk County Award of Excellence in Music Composition. Kolensky’s and Kavanagh’s entries both on the theme of “The Magic of a Moment,” not only achieved victory on the county level, but also won during the next round

of judging at the New York State PTA level. They both will be recognized at the state PTA convention in November. “The PTA Reflections program was described by its founder, Mary Lou Anderson, as almost too simple,” said Linda Hillman, the East Islip Middle School PTA Reflections chairperson. “That simplicity – of asking children to express themselves artistically based on a common theme – is the foundation of this longstanding PTA program.” Students participating in PTA Reflections submit artwork to their local PTAs, where

the works are judged at the local level. The winning entries advance to the county, then to the state. Top state award-winning entries advance to the national level of judging. “This year we had over 100 student participants districtwide,” said Hillman. “We had winners move onto judging at the Suffolk County level in all categories ranging in age from kindergarten through high school.” Three other district Reflections winners were selected from East Islip at the county level and moved on to judging at the state level: Emily Jean White at Connetquot Elementary

in Photography, Paige Maurici at JFK in Dance Choreography and Julianna Longo at Ruth C. Kinney Elementary in Music Composition. Along with Kolensky and Kavanagh, they will be presented with certificates from the Suffolk Region PTA at the annual Reflections Showcase in April. Other East Islip Middle School students honored for their work in the 2012 Reflections contest were Sarah Bloom and Gregory Cassiano, both winners of the schoollevel Award of Excellence in Literature; Thomas Allen, Raymond Betances and Angela Loizides, who won the Award of Merit in Literature; and Edmund Martorella, given the Award of Excellence in Photography. Middle school students who participated in PTA Reflections but did not win any of the categories still received a participation prize and congratulations from Principal Mark Bernard.

Winter Storm Nemo may have forced a rescheduling to February 12th and 13th, but it couldn’t dampen East Islip Middle School’s young thespians’ enthusiasm and theatrical ambitions as they put on two superlative performances of Meredith Willson’s 1957 Broadway smash The Music Man. Based on a story by Willson and Franklin Lacey, “The Music Man” tells the story of a con man, Harold Hill, who pretends to be a bandleader selling uniforms

Students in Robert Chiarelli’s fifth-grade class at Connetquot Elementary in Islip Terrace recently explored the world of nonfiction books, expanding their knowledge and entertaining their peers with book reports and visual projects in a nod to the new Common Core State Standards, which emphasize familiarizing the students with nonfiction texts and having them determine the pertinent information that the books contain. After the class discussed the features of nonfiction text, each individual student was given the option of choosing any book on any topic that he or she wanted to learn more about, with topics ranging from people and places to specific events. Chiarelli also strongly encouraged them to choose topics that they had no prior knowledge of. The reports had to address the format and the author’s style in delivering the detailed information contained in the selected book. The students were required to paraphrase the specific evidence from their books and organize the structure of their report in a similar but condensed manner. “My students agreed that the text was difficult at times to understand,” said Chiarelli. “They needed to be selective and to make educated decisions as to what information to include within their reports, as they were restricted in

regards to the length.” The fifth-graders were also given the option of choosing their own visual component to accompany the report. Some of the graphic elements they used were wanted posters, models, timelines and even costumes embodying people featured in the books. They were then required to present their written reports and their visual components to their classmates, who proved to be an active, engaged and respectful audience. “The class found the books incredibly interesting and the students now look at the genre of nonfiction in a completely different light,” said Chiarelli. “They even felt the desire to learn more about some of the topics.”

Tyler James D’Agostino successfully completed his Eagle Board of Review in July, 2012, officially making him the 40th Eagle Scout of Troop 205 of Great River, East Islip, and Islip Terrace. Tyler’s Eagle Court of Honor will be held on Sunday, April 7th, starting at 11 a.m. at the Marconi Manor of Islip, 333 Moffitt Boulevard. Tyler D’Agostino is a member of Troop 205, sponsored by the Great River Fire Department, under the direction of Scoutmaster Mark Businski. On his “road to Eagle,” Tyler has served the Troop as Patrol Leader, Assistant Patrol Leader, and Troop Guide. Tyler has had many unique Scouting experiences, including many Long Island camping experiences and extended trips, attending summer camp at Camp Wakpominee in Fort Ann, NY for three consecutive years, participated in the Baiting Hollow Scout Camp spring and winter sessions, hiked in the Harriman State Park, and camped at Camp Hero – the old World War II Military Installation in Montauk. To become an Eagle Scout, the Scout must earn 21 Merit Badges, of which 12 are specifically Eagle

required, progress through six rank advancements – from Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star, Life, then Eagle, and also plan, develop, and implement a major Service Project for the Community. The Service Project that Tyler conducted was the organization, solicitation, and collection of 195 used bikes, along with 10 used sewing machines. As part of Tyler’s Eagle Project, the bikes then had to be prepared for shipment to third world counties to be used by people in need of transportation and sewing machines. His project was to support the non-profit organization – Pedals for Progress. Tyler also raised $2,200 to help with the costs of shipping the bikes and sewing machines to the third world countries. As Tyler reflects on his Scouting experience, he recently said, “It is a wellknown fact that there are two paths a person can choose in life. The first path that is far more common to be traveled is the path of being a follower. The second path is the road that is rarely taken by individuals and that is the road of a leader. This idea is perfectly demonstrated in the famous poem The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost. I strive to follow the second road, the road of a leader. In every situation I strive to play a critical role and make sure everything I’m involved with complies with my standards.” Tyler went on to say, “My positions of leadership and my choice to be a leader has had a tremendous effect on me. With all the obstacles I have overcome during my leadership roles I know that I can face whatever life decides

SOUTH BAY SUCCESS STORY! TROOPER, the Poodle who had his eye surgically removed after being hit by a car in Wyandanch, was recently adopted. A lovely family saw him in South Bay - he looked just like their Bichon mix that had died. They called Babylon Shelter and were told he had been moved to Last Hope. The family rushed right down to Wantagh and, after going through the adoption process, took Trooper home. He is doing wonderfully with their other Bichons, kids, everyone... he fit right in! Here he is pictured in his new home.

The East Islip Community Watch Group was established to ensure our area continues to be a great place to live and bring the community closer. Together we can make a difference in our neighborhood with consistency and effective communication. Neighbors can voice concerns or present prevention and solution ideas to potential or current problems. The mission of this group and it’s members is to keep our neighborhood safe and to share information about anything happening in the neighborhood related to crime, suspicious activity, drugs, town concerns, questions, meeting dates and times, ect. The community is also educated about who to contact in the event of a storm warning and damage and to assist others in need as a result of destruction. Through this group, residents who were previously unknown to one another have regular conversations. Our next East Islip Community Watch Meeting will be held on Wednesday, March 27 at the East Islip Library on the 2nd Floor in the North Room from 7-9PM. Supervisor Tom Croci will be attending to answer any Town related questions along with Patrick Boyle, COPE Officer Jeannette Morales, Cope Sgt Welshimer and Special Victims. The Special Victims Unit will be educating the group on the sexual predator alerts and protocol. We recently had one move back into the area.

Perception By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Perception is everything. Reality is secondary. Seems like it should be the other way around, doesn’t it? And yet, how often do we form our opinions of someone based solely upon an initial, sometimes completely skewed, impression? Feel vs. facts. Sometimes, a gut feeling is the right one. Other times, more careful consideration is needed. But how to determine the difference…that is the question. I have often been told that I form opinions about others far too quickly, leaving little room for the actual process of becoming acquainted. It’s basically black and white, no

shades of gray along the way. Not a great way to be, I’ll be the first to admit; especially because, what happens when the tables are turned and someone makes the exact same snap judgment about you? Not a fair assessment, is it? I’m not sure what changed over the years. I don’t think I was always like this. But lately, my level of impatience and intolerance has grown by leaps and bounds. I’d like to think it all started with my experiences with various members of the fast food industry and their general level of incompetence at the drive-thru. But perhaps that was just the trigger. In any case, I do take exception when others exhibit

the same level of annoyance without taking the time to truly get to know me. This has caused me to take a step back and reevaluate others’ perceptions of me lately. What’s that they say about never judging a person until you have walked a mile in their shoes? True words indeed. Perhaps we should all take that step back and not rush to judge. Sure, some initial impressions are spot on – but what harm does it do to take a little extra time to either confirm or refute that gut feeling? None, so far as I can tell. And who knows, you might just find a new friend in the process.

PRAYER TO THE BLESSED VIRGIN (Never know to fail) Oh most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine, splendor of heaven, blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh Star of the Sea, help me and show me herein you are my mother. Oh Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart, to succor me in this necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh show me herein you are my mother. Oh Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee. (3x) Holy Mother, I place this cause in you hands. (3x) Holy Spirit, You who solve all problems, light all roads to that I can attain my goal. You, that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy toward me and mine. Amen. The person must say this prayer 3 consecutive days. After 3 days, the request will be granted. This prayer must be published after the favor is granted. BA
