Concussion of the brain is the very common injury that occurs under different circumstances. It can occur during the simple slip and fall accident, motor vehicle accident, but most commonly it does in sport. Over the last ten years a lot of research was done with an intention to explain why there is much higher incidence of neurological disorders affecting professional sport players. This study eventually revealed that a mild head injury causes pathological processes that eventually may lead to neurological diseases such as Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, Lou Gehrig’s, etc. During the mild head injury or mild concussion of the brain, the symptoms of the actual injury could be transient and brief, and eventually this condition becomes virtually asymptomatic or having very subtle symptoms. Those symptoms could be just a mild headache, excessive fatigue, excessive or lack of sleep, problem with concentration. Since many symptoms of concussion are brief and may not be present on the second or third day after the concussion, it will leave very little tools to help a doctor to determine if the player is ready to go back to play. Current thinking is that optimal recovery of concussed students occurs when there is cognitive, physical, and emotional rest following injury. Additionally, research has shown that 92% of second injuries occur in the first week following the initial injury, and the goal is to allow adequate recovery time before allowing a student to risk re-injury. Pressure to return an athlete before it is safe can be intense from parents and athletes. Primary care physicians are being asked to assist in the process of keeping injured children safe by remaining objective and withholding participation until it is deemed safe with a reasonable degree of medical certainty.

return to school), but we anticipate a similar slow exertional challenge as we see in RTP. The graduated steps begin after the student has a medical clearance to return to academics, and is symptom free off pain killing medicines for a full 24 hours. RTL should be an individualized steady progression with the parent’s checking the child daily for a return of symptoms and alerting you if the student is struggling so you can provide appropriate requests for medical accommodations to the school as needed. Unlike a RTP, the RTL might start at any level and progress at a rate individualized to the student’s needs and tolerance. Steps might be skipped as tolerated and might look something like this: Students with reasonable recovery times typically will get accommodations within the school by the principal. Students with protracted recovery beyond about 10 weeks, a school quarter, are likely eligible for a 504 plan or an IEP, and you might be asked to write a request to support the family at that time.

The Concussion Act of NYS

www.pediatricimmediatecare.com

The Concussion Act of NYS took effect July 1, 2012, and requires schools to: • Educate parents, athletes, coaches, athletic trainers, physical education teachers, and school nurses on concussion, • Remove observed or suspected concussed students from play based on signs and symptoms, • Withhold further participation until evaluated by, and received written and signed authorization to return to activities from a licensed physician. • Obtain physician clearance, and when the athlete has been symptom-free off pain killing medicines for a minimum of 24 hours and allow them to begin a monitored progressive six phase return to play. MAKING A CLINICAL DETERMINATION • Symptoms: somatic (e.g. headache, nausea, dizziness), cognitive (e.g. feeling in a fog), and/or emotional (e.g. liability)

• Behavioral changes: irritability, personality changes • Cognitive impairment: Hard time concentrating, trouble remembering, not feeling themselves, being confused, thinking speed slowed down, taking a longer time to react • Sleep disturbance: drowsiness, insomnia GRADUATED RETURN TO PHYSICAL EXERTION AND ACTIVITY OR RETURN TO PLAY (RTP) This is a six step gradual return to activity. The RTP protocol may not start until an athlete is completely symptom-free for a full 24 hours off pain killing medicines, and must remain symptom-free for 24 hours following each stage before progressing further. RECOVERY Average recovery following concussion is about a week to ten days; protracted recovery with post concussion syndrome is after 21 days. Young teenage girls often have protracted recovery more than any other group. RETURN TO LEARN (RTL) More information will be forthcoming about RTL (cognitive

Bringing the community together for three days of fundraising recreation, the 16th Annual FTK Carnival was held from September 21st-23rd on the grounds of Timber Point Elementary School in East Islip. FTK President Nancy Goldfader welcomed East Islip students, staff, parents and friends to the Friday night opening ceremonies, which featured strong vocal and musical performances by combined ensembles of students from all four of the East Islip School District’s elementary schools (Timber Point as well as

Connetquot, John F. Kennedy and Ruth C. Kinney). With patriotic colors flying courtesy of three local Scouts, student Emma Sasso led the assembled crowd in the Pledge of Allegiance. The chorus students then sang a stirring “Star-Spangled Banner,” conducted by RCK music teacher Margaret Strzelecka and assisted by fellow music teachers Kathleen Carter of Timber Point, Eileen Egbert of Connetquot and James Santoro of JFK. Up next were the

elementary string students, who performed marvelously under the direction of teachers Jaime DeMaria and Angela Fetcho, assisted by Alyssa Sciarrino, the high school’s string orchestra director. “The string musicians from all four buildings really ‘twinkled’ and shined at the opening ceremonies,” said DeMaria. “We were very proud of all of our students!” When the last musical notes had faded, Goldfader spoke, expressing her

Weekend Of Fun

Proudly Serving The Community Since 1953! YOUR COMMUNITY NEWSPAPER!

Continued From Page 4 gratitude for the support FTK (formally known as the For the Kids Foundation) had received. Superintendent of Schools John J. Finello took the mic to reiterate how meaningful FTK’s recent $70,000 donation would be for the students in the district. With those words, the party started and a weekend of fun games, rides and food began for the children of East Islip. “We were thrilled with the community support through sponsorships and ecstatic with the turnout for this year’s carnival,” said Goldfader. “I give sincere thanks to everyone – especially co-chairpersons Pat Blair and Mary Finn – who gave of their time and energy to this event. Beautiful weather, exciting rides, great food and a safe environment made for a weekend that was enjoyed by all, especially the kids.” Photos by: Greg Fasolino, Syntax

LONG ISLAND – A new report has just been released which reveals 7 costly mistakes that most homeowners make when selling their home, and a 9 Step System that can help you sell your home fast and for the most amount of money. This industry report shows clearly how the traditional ways of selling homes have become increasingly less and less effective in today’s market. The fact of the matter is that fully three quarters of homesellers don’t get what they want for their home and become disillusioned and - worse - financially disadvantaged when they put their home on the market.

As this report uncovers, most homesellers make 7 deadly mistakes that cost them literally thousands of dollars. The good news is that each and every one of these mistakes is entirely preventable. In answer to this issue, industry insiders have prepared a free special report entitled “The 9 Step System to Get Your Home Sold Fast and For Top Dollar”. To hear a brief recorded message about how to order your free copy of this report, call 1-877-263-6397 and enter ID #1000. You can call anytime, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week . Personally, I have always felt that, as long as your opinion is well informed and based on some sort of intelligent foundation, there should really be no need to defend it. Believe what you believe; just don’t try to impose it upon others. That’s what the politicians are for. Those basic philosophies which make us different are precisely what make our society unique – and interesting. No need to change that. When things take a nasty turn – which they inevitably seem to – whether in the form of written discourse or verbal sparring, that’s when it has gone too far. A little healthy debate is fine, and should be encouraged even. We should all be open to other viewpoints – perhaps, in our own narrow-minded tunnel vision, we may have missed some-

thing valid and eye opening. But merely shoving your unsolicited opinions down someone else’s throat is not only unnecessary, but borders on disrespectful. Voting booths are private for a reason, as are many religious institutions and practices. No one should feel obligated to defend his/her beliefs, so long as they are founded in some sort of informed, grounded philosophy. And if they aren’t, if they are merely based on a handful of regurgitated talking points or hearsay – well then, why would you want to recruit someone so ignorant to your side anyway? Better they are left to their own devices. Simply my opinion. Take it or leave it. {This message was approved by Jamie Lynn Ryan.}

They say that two of the most taboo topics are religion and politics, subjects that should be avoided at all costs when in mixed company. Before I had my own legitimate opinions on such matters, I have to admit that I never understood what the big deal was. Now I get it. Especially in this day and age, with the advent of social media and the ability to post all sorts of potentially controversial tweets, status updates, photos, videos, etc.… is it any wonder that tensions tend to build to the point of heated disagreements? One day you’re “friends” – the next you’re engaged in a bitter dispute over political ideals. Some things should simply be left for private discourse.

Developmental Disabilities Institute (DDI), the leading service provider for children and adults with autism on Long Island, hosted its DDI Walk and Motorcycle Run for Autism, on September 23rd at the Holtsville Ecology Center. DDI raise over $35,000 to help fund the vital programs and services DDI provides to over 5,000 families served by their educational and residential programs, adult day training and medical services. “This event is all about coming together as a community and helping those who cannot help themselves,” said CoChairmen of the event Brian Brunjes and Charlie Hudson. “This year we not only met that goal, but we exceeded it. It is inspiring to see the generosity of a community come together and lend themselves to help benefit thousands of Long Islanders.” Hundreds of Long Islanders came out for the scenic 5K Walk through Suffolk County's Holtsville Ecology Park followed by a festival in the park complete with picnic lunch, music, games, a petting zoo and more. This year event also included a Motorcycle run sponsored by Hansen Home Designs. U.S. Olympian and Sachem alum Maria Michta helped kick the walk off as the Grand Marshall. Maria recently competed in the women’s 20K race walk event at the summer games in London. “I am honored to be invited to DDI’s Walk and Motorcycle Run as the Grand Marshall,” stated Maria. “As an athlete, DDI’s walk presents a wonderful opportunity to work out while also giving back to the community. I would like to thank DDI for this opportunity as well as everyone in attendance for their support. ASDs are unfortunately all too common and while scientists and doctors continue to search for answers it is important that we as a community do our part to support those families who struggle with the frustrating realties of these disorders on a daily basis.” 244813N1010

Spotless Sparkles

A KIC (Keep Islip Clean) sponsored group called “The Spotless Sparkles” participated in The American Littoral Society and The Ocean Conservancy Annual Global Intercostal Cleanup. Christian Muller, a 7th grader at Islip Middle School, named the group and served as Group Leader and organizer. The objective of this global effort is to remove and catalog litter and debris from our waterways, wetlands and coastlines in order to preserve these

delicate and environmentally diverse ecosystems. The group of almost 30 volunteers cleaned up Islip Town Beach and the surrounding assessable wetlands, collecting bags of garbage and recording the critical data on summary cards. The data was sent to scientists at the Ocean Conservancy where they can track pollution trends in an effort to devise solutions to this ever growing problem. Muller says that the amount of smoking and

drug-related items found sparked a discussion among the kids about how both were not only hazardous to your health but to the environment. Nancy Cochran, KIC Executive Director, adds that this group represents what KIC is all about. “People taking ownership of their community to make it a better place to live. These efforts help keep our community clean and our environment healthy,” says Cochran.

Recognizing Scholars

This year, the College Board recognized Islip High School senior Montana Prechtl as an Advanced Placement Scholar with Distinction. To receive this honor, a student must have received an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP exams taken and score 3 or higher on five or more of these exams. Additionally, two students were named AP Scholars with Honor, while 12 students were designated as AP Scholars. AP courses enable students to experience a higher

level of curriculum that is comparable to material covered at the college level, and students taking AP courses can earn college credit while still enrolled in high school. Each course is graded on a scale of 1 to 5, and students pass their course with a grade of 3 or more. In order to be designated as an AP Scholar with Honor, a student must have received a 3.25 or higher on four or more AP exams in the last school year. Shannon McKenna and Madison Schaefer were

this year’s designees. To receive recognition as an AP Scholar, a student must earn a 3 or higher on three or more AP exams. The dozen Islip students named as Scholars this year were Ian Berry, Jacquline Croteau, Katherine Curran, Victoria D’Acunto, Brianna Egger, Madison Grando, Lori Greenblatt, Morgan Greene, Lauren Hyland, Mahnoor Raheel, Bryan Ramirez and Gabriella Rocco.

In an overwhelming gesture of support for the great lifesaving work done by Little Shelter, George Voutsinas Jr. has generously donated his lovely facility on the Great South Bay as well as providing the Chateau’s finest dinner and cocktails. The beautiful and irrepressibly delightful Waller sisters, Gail and Wendy, are pitching in to make sure this is the event of the season! And Little Shelter: although I’m not sure that I’m permitted to tell you... there will be items 631.368.8770 from Chanel, Tiffany, Louis Vuitton, Mackenzie Childs, Ebel, fine art, and JEFFERSON male Chocolate Lab mix much much more.
