JOANN BOETTCHER DAY!

Tuesday, December 3rd was proclaimed JoAnn Boettcher Day by the Village of Lindenhurst. JoAnn was presented with several Proclamations from local, state, and county governments in recognition of her 25 years of service as President of the Lindenhurst Chamber of Commerce and her continued commitment to numerous community organizations. Village of Lindenhurst Deputy Mayor, RJ Renna presented JoAnn with the Lindenhurst Village Proclamation naming December 3rd as "JoAnn Boettcher Day." JoAnn's cornerstone belief both in her professional and personal life is service. She is deeply grateful for the recognition and looks forward to many more years serving our community.

AnnaMarie “Anna” Donlin, 83, longtime resident of Lindenhurst, New York, passed away November 21, 2024, at her home in Raleigh, North Carolina. She is also survived by scores of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband James W. President Of The United States Signs The Working Dog Commemorative Coin Act Into Law

America’s VetDogs is honored to announce that the President of the United States has signed The Working Dog Commemorative Coin Act into law. This landmark legislation, which garnered strong bipartisan support in both the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate, celebrates the essential role of working dogs nationwide while offering vital assistance to veterans, active-duty service members, and first responders with disabilities. Surcharges from the sale of the commemorative coins will directly benefit America’s VetDogs, enabling the national nonprofit to expand its mission and provide more accredited, specially trained service dogs—at no cost— to our nation’s heroes, helping them Live Without Boundaries®.

“This milestone highlights the strength of unity and our collective dedication to honoring the brave men and women who serve our country and communities,” said John Miller, President & CEO of America’s VetDogs. “The commemorative coin series will serve as a lasting tribute to the extraordinary contributions of working dogs, raising awareness of their impact on society while helping us expand our life-changing services to

nation.

We are profoundly grateful to the President, Senate Majority Leader Schumer, as well as the bipartisan Congressional leaders and co-sponsors, whose unwavering support made this achievement possible.”

The Act, originally introduced to the 118th Congress in February 2023 by Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-NC), chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, and Rep. Jim McGovern (D-MA), was later introduced in the Senate in March 2023 by Senators Ted Budd (R-NC), Thom Tillis (RNC), Mark Kelly (D-AZ), and Tammy Duckworth (D-IL).

Recognizing the invaluable contributions of working dogs to society—spanning detection, military service, therapy, and assistance roles—the legislation gained strong support from Senators Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), as well as the entire Long Island delegation, where America’s VetDogs is headquartered.

The commemorative coins, to be issued by the U.S. Mint in 2027, are set to generate crucial funding for America’s VetDogs’ mission.

America’s VetDogs is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization founded by the Guide Dog Foundation and serves clients from across the United States. America’s VetDogs relies on contributions from generous individuals, corporations, service clubs, and foundations to fund its mission to help those who have served our country live with dignity and independence. It costs over $50,000 to breed, raise, train, and place one assistance dog, but America’s VetDogs provides its services completely free of charge to the individuals it is honored to serve. America’s VetDogs has been accredited by both the International Guide Dog Federation and Assistance Dogs International.

The Works Barbershop-

Presiding Officer Kevin J. McCaffrey Issues Statement Regarding End Of Suffolk County Red Light Camera Program:

On Sunday, December 1, 2024, Red Light Cameras Throughout Suffolk County Were Powered Down For The First Time In Nearly Fifteen Years

For years, I have publicly called into question the merit of the Suffolk County Red Light Camera Program, particularly due to a significant increase in accidents at red light camera intersections in my legislative district. Because of this, my name became synonymous with buzz words like “money grab” and “scam alley,” which I coined for the one mile stretch of Route 109 and Great East Neck Road in West Babylon that was home to five camera intersections.

Reports issued by Suffolk County found that these intersections showed an overall increase in both the total number of accidents and accidents with injury. In particular,

the intersections of Montauk Highway and Great East Neck Road/ Bergen Avenue as well as Route 109 and Great East Neck Road showed more than a 100% increase in total accidents and accidents with injuries. Both intersections are in the top five of intersections that showed the most significant increase in accidents and accidents with injuries in the Program. It became clear to me and to many that safety on this stretch of roadway was not the priority, but revenue was. It was the stance of the County that “The Suffolk County Red Light Camera Program is intended to reduce red light running, and by extension the occurrence of crashes.”

Utilizing a

program, it was found that:

- Overall, there was a 59.6% increase in the total number of accidents from pre-enforcement to active enforcement.

- The total number of accidents during the active enforcement period exceeded the projected number of accidents based on Countywide growth rates.

- Countywide, the number of rear end and overtaking accidents was higher than projected.

- The total number of accidents that involved fatalities was unchanged.

The Red-Light Camera Program was sold to the public as a public safety program, but the “gotcha”

profit-minded goals of the program provided an undue tax on the hardworking men and women of our County. It was my intention to eliminate the revenue-generating goals of the program, and today we say mission accomplished.

Now let me be clear, I am not opposed to a program, if it’s done right. A redlight camera program does have the ability to serve a legitimate public safety interest. But to do so, the Program must be free of traps like “scam alley,” where the saturation of cameras has resulted in higher accident and injury counts without public safety benefit.

The Average Individual Is Retiring Earlier Than Many People Might Expect

According to a recent Gallup’s Economy and Personal Finance survey, the average individual in the United States is retiring earlier than many people might expect. Gallup found that the average retirement age

was 62, which is two years earlier than the working respondents indicated they planned to retire. Canadians are retiring a little bit later than their American counterparts, as Statistics Canada reports the average retirement age in Canada is just over 63 and a half. The average retirement age is worth noting, as studies routinely find that many working professionals greatest concern about retiring is that they won’t have enough money saved to

meet their needs. By recognizing that they may end up retiring earlier than they initially planned, professionals can make a concerted effort to save more money in the years ahead.

United Way Of Long Island’s Vetsbuild Program Receives $40,000 Grant From PSEG Foundation

The United Way of Long Island has received a $40,000 grant toward VetsBuild, a program which provides career training and employment opportunities for Long Island veterans and their families, from the PSEG Foundation. The grant will make possible a hands-on education in green construction for 20 veterans as they work to transform the United Way of Long Island headquarters in Deer Park, New York, into a Net Zero building that produces as much energy as it uses.

VetsBuild is part of United Way of Long Island’s Workforce Development Training Academy providing free hands-on training focused on creating a foundation and pathways to secure careers in the renewable energy industry for Long Islanders. Veterans are able to transition back to a civilian routine and gain clear, long-term career

path development that is complemented by online financial empowerment workshops. Graduates become proficient in the installation of clean heating and cooling technologies, high-efficiency HVAC, heat pumps, solar panels, and EV Charging.

“PSEG Long Island is proud to support the United Way of Long Island’s VetsBuild program because giving back to the communities where we live and work is part of PSEG Long Island’s mission,” said David Lyons, interim president and COO of PSEG Long Island who is a United Way of Long Island board member. “The veterans in the program are learning to design, build, and implement renewable energy on our island. The PSEG Foundation’s funding of this program is a win for all of us.”

“Our thanks to PSEG for providing this important

grant,” said Theresa A. Regnante, President and CEO of United Way of Long Island. “The VetsBuild program will provide workforce development training to connect veterans with the confidence and skills needed to obtain employment and return to everyday life.”

VetsBuild participants will also receive training at United Way’s E3 SmartBuild Training Center, a stateof-the-art facility equipped with the latest technology and equipment. Graduates will work toward earning industry-recognized certifications in green building, such as BPI (Building Performance Institute) and OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration).

“The PSEG Foundation has a long history of supporting veterans and their families, and this program emphasizes all three of our key pillars –environmental sustainability,

social justice and equity and economic empowerment,” said Maria Spina, manager, PSEG Foundation and Corporate Social Responsibility. “VetsBuild is the type of program that will help veterans thrive in the new economy, enabling them to better support their

families and communities while also caring for our planet.”

A signature program of the United Way of Long Island, VetsBuild provides career training, employment, and wrap-around services to veterans who have served post-2001 and seek a career

path. The program combines formal education with onthe-job training and engages local businesses and unions to hire graduates.

paint on top hats and scarves. In the years to come, artists can marvel at how small their hand prints once were.

Wine cork reindeer

Repurpose wine corks by crafting adorable little reindeer. Two corks make up the head and the body, and four vertically will comprise the feet. Stick on googly eyes, and add a small red or black bead for the nose. Pipe cleaners can be bent to form the reindeer’s antlers.

Family garlands

This craft also makes use of handprints. Ask all family members to trace their handprints on different colors of construction paper or card stock. Cut out all of the paper hands, punch holes in the tops and then string a ribbon through.

Make Holiday Crafting A Family Affair

Decorate the Christmas tree or a mantle with this garland.

Miniature Christmas trees

Paint the tips of gathered pine cones with green paint and allow to dry. Add white glitter or paint as “snow.” Glue the pine cones to wine corks that will serve as the tree trunks, and attach a small wooden star to the top of the trees for the finishing touch.

Decoupage ornaments

Purchase wooden or plastic ball ornaments. Cover with small scraps of cut fabric or paper dipped in craft glue or Mod Podge®, and attach to the ornament in an overlapping fashion. Remember to add a string from which the ornament can be hung on the tree. Allow to dry completely before use.

Paper chain

Advent calendar

Cut strips of paper to make a link for every day of Advent. Advent begins on Sunday, December 1, 2024, and lasts until Christmas. The top link can be any design artists prefer, but those who need a little inspiration can consider a religious symbol, the face of a reindeer, a snowman, or a Christmas tree. Hang the chain and then children can take turns ripping off a link from the bottom each day as they count down to the holiday.

Popsicle stick snowflakes

Paint four popsicle sticks per snowflake in desired colors. Decorate with glue, pompoms, beads, or other trinkets. Add small looped strings to hang the ornaments.
