Of Taboo Topics & Talking Points By: Jamie Lynn Ryan They say that two of the most taboo topics are religion and politics, subjects that should be avoided at all costs when in mixed company. Before I had my own legitimate opinions on such matters, I have to admit that I never understood what the big deal was. Now I get it. Especially in this day and age, with the advent of social media and the ability to post all sorts of potentially controversial tweets, status updates, photos, videos, etc.… is it any wonder that tensions tend to build to the point of heated disagreements? One day you’re “friends” – the next you’re engaged in a bitter dispute over political ideals. Some things should simply be left for private discourse.

Dear Readers,

Now is the time to save up to $1000 on every gorgeous Karastan carpet. Every pattern. Every color. Come in today and Save. Sale ends on November 6th.

Open: Mon.-Thurs. 10am-9pm; Fri. & Sat. 10am-6pm; Sunday 12 Noon-5pm

thing valid and eye opening. But merely shoving your unsolicited opinions down someone else’s throat is not only unnecessary, but borders on disrespectful. Voting booths are private for a reason, as are many religious institutions and practices. No one should feel obligated to defend his/her beliefs, so long as they are founded in some sort of informed, grounded philosophy. And if they aren’t, if they are merely based on a handful of regurgitated talking points or hearsay – well then, why would you want to recruit someone so ignorant to your side anyway? Better they are left to their own devices. Simply my opinion. Take it or leave it.

Personally, I have always felt that, as long as your opinion is well informed and based on some sort of intelligent foundation, there should really be no need to defend it. Believe what you believe; just don’t try to impose it upon others. That’s what the politicians are for. Those basic philosophies which make us different are precisely what make our society unique – and interesting. No need to change that. When things take a nasty turn – which they inevitably seem to – whether in the form of written discourse or verbal sparring, that’s when it has gone too far. A little healthy debate is fine, and should be encouraged even. We should all be open to other viewpoints – perhaps, in our own narrow-minded tunnel vision, we may have missed some-

The ReWalk participant uses arm crutches to maintain balance during standing and walking. The two ReWalkers will participate in the 1-mile Walk and this will be the first time each participates in this type of an event utilizing the exoskeletonassisted walking device. One of the participants is Theresa Hannigan, a former Army Sergeant who served during the Vietnam era and was left paralyzed two years ago as a result of a progressive autoimmune disease which she contracted while in the Army.

The 5th Annual Long Island Run For The Warriors® will be held on Saturday, October 20th. Each year, this race is completed by nearly 2,000 runners and walkers from Long Island, all who honor and support the sacrifices of our nation’s heroes. This year, participants will be joined by two ReWalkers who will utilize new cutting edge technology to complete the 1-mile Walk event. The ReWalkers are participants of the Spinal Cord Damage Research Center at the James J Peters VA Medical Center in the Bronx. The ReWalk is a robot-assisted exoskeleton. Use of the ReWalk permits a person with motor-complete paraplegia to stand, walk over ground and to ascend/descend stairs. The system weighs 45 pounds and includes a footplate,

Concussion of the brain is the very common injury that occurs under different circumstances. It can occur during the simple slip and fall accident, motor vehicle accident, but most commonly it does in sport. Over the last ten years a lot of research was done with an intention to explain why there is much higher incidence of neurological disorders affecting professional sport players. This study eventually revealed that a mild head injury causes pathological processes that eventually may lead to neurological diseases such as Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, Lou Gehrig’s, etc. During the mild head injury or mild concussion of the brain, the symptoms of the actual injury could be transient and brief, and eventually this condition becomes virtually asymptomatic or having very subtle symptoms. Those symptoms could be just a mild headache, excessive fatigue, excessive or lack of sleep, problem with concentration. Since many symptoms of concussion are brief and may not be present on the second or third day after the concussion, it will leave very little tools to help a doctor to determine if the player is ready to go back to play. Current thinking is that optimal recovery of concussed students occurs when there is cognitive, physical, and emotional rest following injury. Additionally, research has shown that 92% of second injuries occur in the first week following the initial injury, and the goal is to allow adequate recovery time before allowing a student to risk re-injury. Pressure to return an athlete before it is safe can be intense from parents and athletes. Primary care physicians are being asked to assist in the process of keeping injured children safe by remaining objective and withholding participation until it is deemed safe with a reasonable degree of medical certainty.

return to school), but we anticipate a similar slow exertional challenge as we see in RTP. The graduated steps begin after the student has a medical clearance to return to academics, and is symptom free off pain killing medicines for a full 24 hours. RTL should be an individualized steady progression with the parent’s checking the child daily for a return of symptoms and alerting you if the student is struggling so you can provide appropriate requests for medical accommodations to the school as needed. Unlike a RTP, the RTL might start at any level and progress at a rate individualized to the student’s needs and tolerance. Steps might be skipped as tolerated and might look something like this: Students with reasonable recovery times typically will get accommodations within the school by the principal. Students with protracted recovery beyond about 10 weeks, a school quarter, are likely eligible for a 504 plan or an IEP, and you might be asked to write a request to support the family at that time.

The Concussion Act of NYS

The Concussion Act of NYS took effect July 1, 2012, and requires schools to: • Educate parents, athletes, coaches, athletic trainers, physical education teachers, and school nurses on concussion, • Remove observed or suspected concussed students from play based on signs and symptoms, • Withhold further participation until evaluated by, and received written and signed authorization to return to activities from a licensed physician. • Obtain physician clearance, and when the athlete has been symptom-free off pain killing medicines for a minimum of 24 hours and allow them to begin a monitored progressive six phase return to play. MAKING A CLINICAL DETERMINATION • Symptoms: somatic (e.g. headache, nausea, dizziness), cognitive (e.g. feeling in a fog), and/or emotional (e.g. liability)

• Behavioral changes: irritability, personality changes • Cognitive impairment: Hard time concentrating, trouble remembering, not feeling themselves, being confused, thinking speed slowed down, taking a longer time to react • Sleep disturbance: drowsiness, insomnia GRADUATED RETURN TO PHYSICAL EXERTION AND ACTIVITY OR RETURN TO PLAY (RTP) This is a six step gradual return to activity. The RTP protocol may not start until an athlete is completely symptom-free for a full 24 hours off pain killing medicines, and must remain symptom-free for 24 hours following each stage before progressing further. RECOVERY Average recovery following concussion is about a week to ten days; protracted recovery with post concussion syndrome is after 21 days. Young teenage girls often have protracted recovery more than any other group. RETURN TO LEARN (RTL) More information will be forthcoming about RTL (cognitive

(NAPSI)—You may be able to find a great used car online—if you heed a few hints: • You can search millions of used cars for sale online if you go to sites like Autotrader.com and Cars.com. • To narrow your search, consider and compare price, photos of the cars and their descriptions. • Consider the seller. Is the person or company reputable? Is it a dealer or a private seller? They walked for Long Island friends and neighbors, they walked for family members and loved ones, they walked in honor and in memory of the close to 9,600 people on Long Island that die each year from cardiovascular diseases and stroke – Long Island’s No. 1 and No. 4 causes of death. They walked to start a healthier journey and a healthier life. Led by John Buran, President & CEO of Flushing Bank, American Heart Association Long Island Heart Walk Red Cap Ambassador, 13-year old, Cecilia Funk and her family, and WCBS-TV correspondent Jennifer McLogan and thousands of walkers on a beautiful warm and sunny day, stepped out on Sunday, September 23rd, at Jones Beach to help save Long Island lives from heart disease and stroke. “It has been a pleasure and an honor to lead this campaign as Chairman and I appreciate each and every one that supported our efforts to make a difference and save lives.” said John Buran. The Long Island Heart Walk was an opportunity for people to improve their health by walking, while simultaneously raising funds to help fight heart disease and stroke. The American Heart Association’s My Heart. My Life.™ movement will change how Americans live their lives. My Heart. My Life. is about making health a priority – as individuals and as families – by starting with small changes and building toward an ideal health goal. With a focus on personal and incremental change, My Heart. My Life. offers hands-on experiences and practical solutions to help people get physically active, eat healthy and pass healthy habits on to future

generations. By making small changes to take care of their hearts, Americans engaged in the My Heart. My Life. movement put themselves on a path to a longer, better life. The days’ event also included a morning health fair, kid’s zone, blood pressure s c r e e n i n g s , entertainment by the Adelphi University college cheerleaders and dance team and The Long Island Conservatory and music by The S.I.E. band, Nico Padden and Rob Baione. The Long Island Heart Walk is presented nationally by Subway and Jenny Craig, presenting sponsor Flushing Bank, and Long Island businesses such as Astoria Savings Bank, Allstate, Geico, Winthrop-University Hospital, Deloitte, Forest Labs, Hon. Thomas

Gulotta, J.H. Cohn LLP, MSC Industrial Supply Co., St. Joseph’s College and Stony Brook University Medical Center. Media Sponsors of the event were WBABFM 102.3, WBLI-FM 106.1 and Long Island Pulse Magazine. Thirty-nine percent of Americans think they are in ideal health, but fewer than 1 percent actually meet the American Heart Association’s criteria. The association is teaching people what it really means to be healthy, offering practical solutions to improve their lives and the lives of their families. To learn more about the My Heart. My Life. movement, and how your company can become Fit Friendly Company, call the American Heart Association office at 516.450.9126 or visit www.longislandheartwal k.org.

Developmental Disabilities Institute (DDI), the leading service provider for children and adults with autism on Long Island, hosted its DDI Walk and Motorcycle Run for Autism, on September 23rd at the Holtsville Ecology Center. DDI raise over $35,000 to help fund the vital programs and services DDI provides to over 5,000 families served by their educational and residential programs, adult day training and medical services. “This event is all about coming together as a community and helping those who cannot help themselves,” said CoChairmen of the event Brian Brunjes and Charlie Hudson. “This year we not only met that goal, but we exceeded it. It is inspiring to see the generosity of a community come together and lend themselves to help benefit thousands of Long Islanders.” Hundreds of Long Islanders came out for the scenic 5K Walk through Suffolk County's Holtsville Ecology Park followed by a festival in the park complete with picnic lunch, music, games, a petting zoo and more. This year event also included a Motorcycle run sponsored by Hansen Home Designs. U.S. Olympian and Sachem alum Maria Michta helped kick the walk off as the Grand Marshall. Maria recently competed in the women’s 20K race walk event at the summer games in London. “I am honored to be invited to DDI’s Walk and Motorcycle Run as the Grand Marshall,” stated Maria. “As an athlete, DDI's walk presents a wonderful opportunity to work out while also giving back to the community. I would like to thank DDI for this opportunity as well as everyone in attendance for their support. ASDs are unfortunately all too common and while scientists and doctors continue to search for answers it is important that we as a community do our part to support those families who struggle with the frustrating realties of these disorders on a daily basis.” 244813N1010

Job Fair Set

The Town of Oyster Bay, through its federallysubsidized Workforce Program, will be holding a Job Fair and Employment Seminar on Thursday, October 11th, Town Supervisor John Venditto announced. The event, which is intended to aid t h o s e unemployed/underemploy ed within the Town, will be held at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center, 1001 Stewart Avenue in Bethpage. “The Town is very excited to present both the job seekers and businesses with this unique opportunity,” Supervisor Venditto stated. “At this job fair and employment seminar, over 25 companies are expected to attend, providing an opportunity for employees to apply onsite for job openings, and to learn about the application process and specific employment needs of each

individual company.” In addition to the e m p l o y m e n t opportunities presented by companies onsite, experienced Town of Oyster Bay Workforce Specialists will be available to meet with job seekers on a one-on-one basis to discuss job search strategies, assess skill levels, explore career opportunities, and critique/prepare professional resumes. “The Town’s Workforce Specialists are a unique resource that we are happy to make available to those who attend the job fair and seminar,” Supervisor Venditto continued. “While the ultimate goal of any such job fair and employment seminar is finding as many employment opportunities for those who attend as possible, I am confident that those in attendance will leave knowing that with hard

Inspirational Return work and determination, a great job is within reach.” As part of the day’s events, a presentation by the Long Island Labor Market Analyst will provide current information on the state of the Long Island economy, including active hiring trends amongst companies and industries. For more information on the job fair and employment seminar, and to reserve a slot, contact the Town’s Workforce Program at 516.797.4560.

Massapequa High school graduate Chris Crowley, class of 2012, is one of the district’s foreign language program success stories. During his high school career, Chris studied French, Chinese and Italian. He received a 5, the highest grade, on the Advanced Placement French exam and earned an Excellence in Foreign Language Study Award from the Foreign Language Association of Chairpersons and Supervisors (FLACS). During a recent visit to his alma mater he discussed his postgraduate pursuits at Hunter College’s Chinese Language Flagship program to show current foreign language students what they can aspire to beyond high school. The government-funded Language Flagship program, offered at various colleges and universities throughout

the country, aims to promote in the United States uncommon languages ranging from Arabic to Turkish by offering students intensive language instruction and immersion to enhance their academic degrees. Through the program, Chris is expected to achieve high proficiency in Mandarin Chinese through a combination of content-based instruction, one-on-one conversation practice, community service, internships and a one-year study abroad program. “Students in the program major in a chosen language and another field of study with the goal of becoming ‘global professionals’ by using language to become successful in a chosen field.” Chris said. A Chinese and economics major, Chris described how the program immerses

participants in the art and culture of China through various field trips in New York City. He also discussed his plans to volunteer in Taiwan for two-and a half months and then spend his fourth year in China learning economics in Chinese the first half of the year and interning the second half of the year. He advised current foreign language students to “keep practicing to overcome struggles with the language, stick to class participation because that is a form of emerging to proficiency, and be conscious of tones so that you can speak more effectively and are not misinterpreted.” He also encouraged them to take advantage of any realworld opportunities. and flexibility as a tool to enhance organizational and employee success. As a winner, YES ranks in the top 20% of employers nationwide in workplace flexibility. The Sloan Award recognizes organizations that are dedicated to making work “work” for both the employer and the employees. Representing employers of all sizes and all types, winners of this prestigious award not only offer excellent workplace flexibility practices, but they also use flexibility as a strategic business tool to enhance organizational effectiveness while also benefiting employees. YES Board of Directors and Executive staff acknowledge the important role that flexibility practices play in the success of an organization and how critical it is to recognize and respond to the needs of our employees. Applications for the Alfred P. Sloan Awards were open to all organizations in the

greater New York area with more than 10 employees that had been in business for at least one year. Applicants were evaluated in a rigorous two-step process, first comparing the employer’s application to nationally representative data from Families and Work Institute’s National Study of Employers, and then corroborating the employer responses through a survey of employees. Jamie Bogenshutz, YES Executive Director stated that, “The agency is truly excited to receive this p r e s t i g i o u s acknowledgement which further attests to our organizations efforts to maintain and achieve the highest of business standards.” For more information about YES Community Counseling Center, please call 516.799.3203 or visit them on the web at yesccc.org.

Eisenhower Park was filled with the laughter of more than 700 pediatric cancer survivors and family members who gathered for the inaugural Les Nelkin Pediatric Cancer Survivors’ Day hosted by Cohen Children’s Medical Center (CCMC)

of New York. They cheered as the event’s keynote speaker, New York Giants’ linebacker Mark Herzlich talked about his own successful battle with Ewing’s sarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer. When he was diagnosed at age 21

before starting his senior year at Boston College, Mr. Herzlich was told that he would not be able to play football again and may never run again. “I decided that I wasn’t going to let cancer beat me,” Mr. Herzlich told fellow survivors. His dream of playing football

pushed him to not just be a survivor, but to “be a thriver.” A three-year cancer survivor who won a Super Bowl ring with the Giants in February during his rookie season, he encouraged attendees to “fulfill your dreams.” The event, made possible by the support of Ruth and Harold Nelkin as a way to honor the memory of their son, Les, attracted former child cancer patients of all ages. They included Tracy Vicere, who is celebrating 22 years of survivorship after being diagnosed at age 16 with two different types of cancer, Hodgkin’s Disease and NonHodgkin’s Lymphoma. The foundation hosts fundraisers to benefit the Division of Hematology/Oncology and Stem Cell Transplantation at CCMC. As a leading center of pediatric oncology, CCMC sees approximately 200 new cases of childhood cancer every year. Thanks to improvements in chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery, there are more than 300,000 children, teens and young adults in the United States who are survivors of childhood cancer and require ongoing care. Cancer Survivors’ Day

Participants may have experienced personal or professional consequences of their substance use, or may have been arrested for a non-violent low-level offense that involved the use of alcohol and/or illegal substances. The group is also perfect for those who are awaiting placement into inpatient or outpatient chemical dependency treatment. The program is 100% confidential and open to all regardless of ability to pay. Start2Stop participants are required to abstain from any drug or alcohol use while they are enrolled in the

program. Those who are unable to remain abstinent during the twelve weeks of sessions are counseled and referred for more intensive treatment. With a well-publicized opiate crisis gripping Long Island and a documented upswing in impaired driving and boating, LICADD Executive Director Dr. Jeffrey Reynolds says support for Start2Stop comes at the perfect time. “I am grateful to Assemblyman Sweeney for helping us make this program more accessible to local residents before

their use of drugs and alcohol accelerates,” he said. “This proactive approach and timely intervention will help make Suffolk County a safer and healthier place.” “Long Island continues to experience a number of well-publicized tragedies due to substance abuse. The Start2Stop program helps participants get control of their substance abuse problem before it escalates into a tragedy. While we need strong laws

voluntary basis throughout the district for both instructional and administrative purposes. So far, about 150 teachers have been trained and more training sessions are scheduled throughout the school year. Students in grades K-12 and their parents have been logging on during the first weeks of school. The immediate increase in collaboration among students, staff and administration is driving the success of this program. “Students using LMS technology are learning in ways that embrace 21stcentury learning by having the opportunity to develop life skills, improve their college and career readiness, become selfreliant independent learners and gain the managerial skills and selfconfidence needed in today’s society,” Steigerwald said. The initiative also comes with “green” and cost-saving benefits. Less paper and copying supplies will be needed in classrooms and administrative departments, which will yield a financial savings for the district.

Oyster Bay Town Receiver of Taxes James J. Stefanich advises residents that the Town has available an informative brochure to assist senior citizens in applying for the Senior Citizen Real Property Tax Exemption program. “Individuals over the age of 65, whose income is less than $37,400.00, are eligible to participate in the Senior Citizen Tax Exemption Program,” said Receiver Stefanich. “These individuals, who must meet certain other criteria, could receive up to a 50 percent reduction on the taxable values of county, Town and certain school district real

property taxes. “This brochure answers many questions regarding application procedures and eligibility for the Senior Citizen Real Property Tax Exemption offered under New York State law. I want to make certain that all our senior citizens who are eligible take advantage of the exemption.” Receiver Stefanich noted that the State must first raise the income ceiling before local municipalities can adopt it. “Supervisor Venditto has been contact with State legislators about raising the income ceiling again so the Town can make the exemption

available to more seniors, as he knows additional relief is still needed,“ he commented. Receiver Stefanich noted that any resident or organization interested in obtaining a free brochure can pick one up at Town Halls North (Oyster Bay) and South (Massapequa), the Department of Public Works (Syosset) and at major park facilities, or call or write to the Town of Oyster Bay Public Information Office, Town Hall East, 54 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay, N.Y. 11771 (516.624.6380). A copy can also be downloaded from the Town’s Web site, www.oysterbaytown.com.

originated as an instructional tool in colleges and universities, and is just recently gaining popularity in grades K-12. Through years of research, and the piloting of several LMS programs, the Massapequa School District chose the Haiku Learning Management System because of its robust, userfriendly features and its ease of integration. Combine that with Haiku’s Google Apps for Education (GAFE) partnership, offering such applications as cK-12 FlexBooks and Kahn Academy, and the benefits of the anytime, anywhere classroom connection are boundless. Jennifer Steigerwald, executive assistant for Digital Curriculum Support and Development, created the implementation plan and the training program, and is experiencing the enthusiasm of the Haiku participants firsthand. “Everywhere you go, people are talking about Haiku — the excitement is infectious,” she said. The buildings throughout Massapequa School District are buzzing with excitement caused by the 2012 technology initiative Haiku — an all-inclusive learning management system (LMS) that extends education beyond school boundaries. This web-based program provides a platform for teachers and students to connect using any device with Internet access, offering “a simple way to bring the Web to the classroom and the classroom to the Web,” said Robert Schilling, executive director of Assessment, Student Data & Technology Services. “Class calendars, class handouts and notes, homework assignments, e-portfolios, file storage and assignment drop boxes are just a few of the many ways students can use Haiku to manage their own education – an important 21st century skill. And, with the district being wireless at the secondary level, teachers and students are encouraged to utilize personal devices in the classroom in ways that support instruction.” LMS technology

BOOTS CAMPAIGN - Assemblyman Joseph Saladino stopped by the Boots Campaign and saw them off before their New York City trip. The Boots Campaign raises awareness of the challenges that our troops face when they return home and donates funds to charities that support and assist them in their transition back home.
