Home Garden Preparing Your Home For The Next Natural Disaster

MASSAPEQUA PARK - SOUTH BAY’S NEIGHBOR NEWSPAPERS - WEDNESDAY JUNE 3, 2020 • www.southbaysneighbor.com

We all want our homes to be safe, comforting spaces that offer refuge and protection from the outside world. The global pandemic has taught us this, as well as the importance of preparation – not just for illness — but also for natural

disasters like fires, floods, earthquakes, and tornados. Making sure your house is a secure and resilient structure is critical no matter where you live, as global warming has altered the climates and weather events of many

regions. Fortunately, thanks to advances in design and innovative materials, building a stronger, disaster-proof home is possible. An alternative to traditional wood-framing, Nudura insulated concrete forms are an excellent option many engineers and designers are turning to. The steelreinforced solid concrete cores range from four to 12 inches, providing far superior strength and safety compared to wood. Meanwhile the nontoxic, fire-retardant expanded polystyrene foam provides a fire protection rating of up to four hours. Homes built with these ICFs are proven to survive natural disasters — houses that faced Hurricane Michael in Florida and Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans are still standing. ICFs even offer wind resistance of up to 250 mph (402 kph), equivalent to an F4 tornado.

&

Homes that use ICF construction have other added benefits, including enhanced insulation for lower energy bills, a reduced carbon footprint, and improved ventilation for better indoor air quality and lower susceptibility to mold.

Home Garden A Guide To Buying And Setting Up A Bird Bath Warm weather means more opportunities to spend time outdoors while at home. Whether your favorite form of outdoor recreation includes sitting on the patio reading or digging in the garden, there’s a good chance that you will be sharing the space with local wildlife. Optimizing opportunities to view and interact with backyard wildlife can make the great outdoors even more enjoyable. The Cornell Lab of Ornithology indicates that there are around 2,059 bird species on the continent of North America. Red-winged blackbirds, yellowrumped warblers, American robins, and chipping sparrows are among the most commonly seen birds in North America. Making a backyard hospitable to birds can increase the chances for sightings and hearing their sweet songs. Installing a bird bath can be a step in the right direction. Bird baths can make yards more attractive to birds. Birds

require a supply of fresh, clean water for drinking and bathing. By setting up a bath, homeowners can attract not only seed-loving birds, but those that don’t eat seeds and wouldn’t normally congregate around feeders, indicates All About Birds. Experts surmise that birds may bathe to maintain their feathers. Not all bird baths are constructed in the same fashion. Many bird baths sold in stores are better suited for decoration than for serving as functional baths. There are four general types of bird baths: standing pedestal, hanging bath, deck-mounted, and ground-level. In general, the lower a bird bath is to the ground, the more likely birds are to use it. Most natural sources of water birds use are on or near the ground. Therefore, groundlevel bird baths may be the best investments. It is important to keep the water in a bird bath shallow (around two inches of water or less). This enables birds to splash

around safely and wade in. Birds do not want to slide around, so a material that is coated and slippery, like glazed ceramic or glass, may not be too popular. Rough stone or a bird bath modified with pea gravel or rocks can give birds steady footing. Place the bird bath in the shade if possible to ensure the water is cool and fresh. Locate it by a tree so the birds can hop up to a branch and preen afterwards. All About Birds also says that a bird bath is more attractive if it has a dripping or moving water feature, as this is often irresistible to birds. Another way to ensure the bath will be used, is to keep it clean and maintained. Change the water every day or two. Rinse off the bath to remove droppings, bugs and other debris. Once birds learn there is a comfortable bath nearby, they may be more apt to visit a yard and may even become frequent guests.

Concrete forms also require less maintenance over time, saving you the expense and effort of continuous upkeep and providing additional peace of mind. Find more information at nudura.com.

Prior research of other viruses found that treating patients with plasma obtained from those who have recovered from the same virus leads to rapid improvement. The use of remdesivir to treat COVID-19 follows limited testing in the United States, Canada, China and elsewhere that led to an improvement in the condition of some patients afflicted with the virus. “Catholic Health Services is excited to be on the front lines and participate in these clinical trials for COVID-19,” said CHS Senior Vice President and Chief Quality Officer Jason Golbin, DO, MBA, MS. “Our clinical teams have spent several weeks caring for COVID-19 patients. It means a great deal to everyone to take part in these two cuttingedge research efforts.” Potential plasma donors must have a prior, verified diagnosis of COVID-19, but are now symptomfree and fully recovered. Catholic Health Services (CHS) is participating in two clinical trials aimed at developing treatments for COVID-19. CHS is participating in a Mayo Clinic trial that will use convalescent plasma donated by recovered COVID-19 patents to treat individuals who continue to fight the virus. The second study involves using the medication remdesivir, which was developed to treat the Ebola virus and has been successfully used for other coronaviruses including Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS). The convalescent plasma study is being offered at CHS’s six hospitals. The remdesivir trial is taking place at St. Francis Hospital, The Heart Center® in Roslyn and at Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip. Initial data available from studies using COVID-19 convalescent plasma to treat individuals with severe or lifethreatening conditions related to the virus indicate that a single dose (200 milliliters/6.8 ounces) of plasma showed a benefit for

The Charity of The Month for June is:

Scanlon’s Traveling Salon

www.ScanlonsTravelingSalon.com

Scanlon’s Traveling Salon is run by Eileen Scanlon, a fellow New Yorker whose mission is to cultivate a community based on kindness, respect and equality. Eileen has been a NYS Licensed Cosmetologist for over 30 years, however she has experience in many other industries as well. She has worked with corporate America, nonprofits, academia and local grassroots organizations. She is well-rounded and truly one of the kindest people I have ever met.

In 2010, Eileen began volunteering, offering free haircuts to people in need. Eileen felt so overjoyed by helping others look and feel beautiful for free while working within various types of socio economic communities, that she eventually began her very own traveling salon. With its catchy slogan, Where Style Comes To You, Scanlon’s Traveling Salon now serves an abundance of people across Long Island. As a licensed hair professional, Eileen has a following of paying customers, however her real passion lies with helping those who are not able to afford a haircut or hair process. Sometimes something as simple as gaining a new look can help a person feel better about him or herself and gain confidence again. Eileen generously and freely gives people that opportunity.

She also incorporates her love of social justice and advocacy into her business practice by using only vegan products. During these trying times when only essential businesses are operating, Eileen has shifted her focus to helping the homless community, a group she feels extremely passionate for. She has been bringing homeless individuals food, clothes, blankets, shoes, etc. to help them feel loved and cared for. Although she actively helps homless people throughout Long Island, she focuses a lot in East Meadow, a community she finds to have a large homeless population. “I’m one person trying desperately to make a difference,” says Eileen. “The ‘not in my backyard’ mentality needs to be a thing of the past!” Her clients, along with local restaurants have donated food, gently used clothes, blankets, shoes and more for her to distribute. The homeless community needs attention and assistance and together we can give them the help they need. One way we can start is by donating food, clothes, shoes, blankets, socks or any other important items to Eileen for her to distribute. She visits homeless individuals twice a day and any donations received will be handed out to those in need.

Some of the communities that Eileen serves are: the home confined and vulnerable, hospice, group homes, sober Lastly, if you or someone you know can houses, assisted living communities and benefit from Eileen’s salon services, you can now book an appointment with her those who are differently abled. for an upcoming date. FASNY Offers Lifesaving BBQ And Grilling Tips During Lockdown As New Yorkers are beginning to emerge from “New York on Pause,” and looking towards nicer weather, many will be dusting off and firing up their grills for the first time in months. The Firemen’s Association of the State of New York urges all New Yorkers to follow some basic rules and tips to avoid accidents and injuries, and to remember not to hesitate to call for help needed. “The warmer weather will certainly encourage New Yorkers to break out their BBQ’s for some outdoor cooking,” said FASNY President Steven Klein. “We want all residents to stay safe as we emerge from quarantine and heed some basic safety tips. We also remind everyone to continue to follow social distancing rules to keep their families and other families safe for the coming months.”

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), from 2014-2018, an average of 19,700 patients per year went to emergency rooms because of injuries involving grills and gas grills were involved in an average of 8,900 home fires per year, including 3,900 structure fires and 4,900 outdoor fires annually. Keep everyone safe by following the important tips below. Tips from the NFPA and FASNY: Propane and charcoal BBQ grills should only be used outdoors. The grill should be placed well away from the home, deck railings and out from under eaves and overhanging branches. Keep children and pets at least three feet away from

the grill area. Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and in trays below the grill. Never leave your grill unattended. Always make sure your gas grill lid is open before lighting it. Grilling Safety Video from the NFPA About FASNY Founded in 1872, the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) represents the interests of the approximately 90,000 volunteer firefighters and emergency medical personnel in New York State. Valedictorian Talia Cartafalsa, foreground, and salutatorian Alexa Mangione have been friends since middle school.

Five years ago, Talia Cartafalsa and Alexa Mangione entered Berner Middle School together from different sides of the Massapequa School District and quickly became friends. Little did they know that they would lead similar academic paths en route to becoming the top ranked graduates of Massapequa High School’s Class of 2020. Talia, with a grade point average of 100.125, was named the valedictorian while Alexa’s 99.8 GPA earned her the distinction of salutatorian. “I’m grateful,” Talia said, “and I’m proud that it’s the two of us because we’ve been friends since 7th grade.” It wasn’t just in class that Talia and Alexa made their mark. They were two active citizens in the Massapequa school community. Talia was the stage manager for the Massapequa High School and Berner Middle School musical productions, a member of the French Club and French and National honor societies. Additionally, she worked as the assistant to the director for the Summer Fine Arts program. Alexa was president of the Visions art and literary magazine, a member of the Spanish Club and the Art, Spanish and National honor societies. She has also been a student assistant in the Summer Fine Arts program, and this past year supported young artists in ceramics, sculpture and printmaking classes.

MASSAPEQUA PARK - SOUTH BAY’S NEIGHBOR NEWSPAPERS - WEDNESDAY JUNE 3, 2020 • www.southbaysneighbor.com

Using South Bay’s Neighbor Newspaper as a form of advertising has been a positive experience. It is the one local paper that is a staple here on the South Shore. I grew up with the South Bay in Lindenhurst and looked forward to receiving it when living in Massapequa and now in Massapequa Park. People stop me and comment how they see me in all the papers and honestly, theirs is the only one I advertise in, so I’m getting the exposure I wanted! Through this difficult time, it has been comforting to reach out to my account representative and have him respond so quickly, whether I am placing my own ad or an ad with other Signature Associates I work with and admire. I think it foolish not to buy print ads in the South Bay’s Neighbor, which is read by so many. Thank you for publishing this local paper. - Katherine C. of Signature Premier Properties

My attitude of gratitude starts with a huge thank you and profound/authentic appreciation for South Bay’s Neighbor Newspaper. This paper really helped put my salon business “on the map” by increasing my client base. I also wound up being contacted by Senator Brooks’ office in regards to being nominated for the Empire State Award, which I then won, after they learned about all that I do for the community while reading the South Bay. I absolutely love this paper and I’m forever grateful what they have done for me. - Eileen S. of Scanlon’s Traveling Salon

We have been advertising our homeowner’s homes in South Bay’s Neighbor Newspaper since 1995. Over the years, we have successfully worked together with several account representatives, thus combining our talents to create advertising copy & photo. We value our long-lasting relationship with South Bay’s Neighbor especially during these challenging Covid-19 times & we urge everyone to continue to support their neighborhood businesses. There are lessons to be learned during this pandemic if we really listen & hopefully as a society we‘ll emerge stronger, wiser, smarter, more compassionate & empathetic. - The Michele & Mark Goodman Team (516-655-6613) of Douglas Elliman Real Estate The Michele & Mark Goodman Team

I have been working with my account representative for the past couple of years to promote my company in the South Bay Neighbor Newspaper and he has always been so helpful and fast to get back to us with any issues that may arise. I am looking forward to continuing our business relationship for many years to come! He and his team are a pleasure to work with. - Benny D. of Exit Realty Premiere

transport you somewhere far away without leaving your home. A pool can help you and the kids get some exercise while swimming laps, while a spa can soothe tired muscles after a long day hunched over your laptop. To reduce energy costs and increase longevity, consider using Nudura insulated concrete forms, which provide superior insulation. ICF pools also can be custommade to accommodate any design, making them a very versatile and efficient way to build pools. Go wild with greenery. Live plants can help you feel connected with nature, and tending to them can help you feel relaxed yet productive during isolation. A vertical garden can add visual interest, while trees and shrubs can provide shade and character. Aromatic herbs like lavender or rosemary offer pleasant scents and can spice up your cooking. And don’t be afraid to cut some flowers from your garden to place in vases or pots for beautiful finishing touches. Find more information at nudura.com.

To recreate the same feeling, splurge on some soft furniture that will make you want to stay outside for hours reading a book or working remotely. It doesn’t have to break the bank either — you can DIY a cozy lounging bench with reclaimed wood and hand-sewn cushions with outdoor stuffing and fabric. Add a relaxing pool or spa. Our backyards are some of the best places to spend the summer months, especially if you’re practicing social distancing and are tired of being cooped up indoors. Massapequa School Libraries Continue To Support Students (“Fountains of Silence”) and Ms. Reynolds (“Dig”) shared the books they were reading and encouraged their students to do the same. Arielle Isaacson read “Eve the Hunted,” Sofia Dooley was immersed in “Educated” and John Passanante read “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.” McKenna Elementary School librarian Ellen Rosenzweig continued lessons on library skills, particularly on responsible digital citizenship. Students completed worksheets about internet safety, learning how to navigate the web to find trustworthy information and how to protect themselves. She also provided students with ideas for makerspace

activities they could do at home, such as building a volcano. Unqua Elementary School librarian Melinda Alford has offered her students library enrichment activities such as virtual trips to New York City museums, podcasts about folktales and read alouds by famous actors. Students made connections with authors and illustrators including Oliver Jeffers, Dav Pilkey and Mo Willems, learned about puppetry and created projects for Poetry Month and Autism Awareness Month. East Lake Elementary School students have been submitting short videos to librarian Renee Susman about the books they are reading at home.

Jacqueline Lee, librarian at Birch Lane Elementary School, also has been getting photos and videos of students doing different literary-based projects at home. Fourth graders studied author Chris Van Allsburg and as a culminating activity they built game boards celebrating one of his wellknown books, “Jumanji.” “There are so many reasons why I love being a librarian, but the children are the best,” Ms. Lee

said. “I love getting the videos from my students completing an activity, and at the end they say they miss me.” Tina Farrell, curriculum associate for English language arts and library media, noted that even through the buildings are closed, Massapequa’s school libraries remain a place of comfort for students. In addition to providing access to e-books and supporting digital literacy, the library

media specialists also chat with students over Google Meet to support research projects. “During this time of distance learning, librarians are connecting with students and their families in meaningful ways to promote literacy,” she said. “We thank our library media specialists for their remarkable effort and dedication to meet the literacy needs of our students during this historical pandemic.”

National Library Week, from April 19-25, served as a valuable reminder that libraries don’t have to be physically open to serve a purpose, as demonstrated by the Massapequa School District’s team of library media specialists. They have continued to remain connected to their students by providing ideas for do-at-home activities. Massapequa High School librarians Jill O’Connor and Lynn Reynolds celebrated National Library Week virtually this year by promoting the simple pleasures of reading. They encouraged students to check out e-book and audiobooks and ensured that plenty of titles were available through the library’s Sora app. Ms. O’Connor
