Expressing Patriotism ast Meadow students at W.T. Clarke Middle School commemorated September 11th, also referred to as Patriot Day, with reflections on hopes and dreams for the future. The morning commenced with the Pledge of Allegiance and the singing of God Bless America. During Social Studies classes, each student wrote a reflection and wishes for a better world on an index card. The index cards were then placed in a box at the school’s Reflection Garden.

Landmark Site Suggested Supervisor Kate Murray and Councilwoman Dorothy Goosby are proud to announce that the Town of Hempstead Landmarks Preservation Commission has offered its unanimous support and a recommendation to the Hempstead Town Board to officially landmark a monument marking the historic take-off site of Charles Lindbergh’s 1927
trans-Atlantic flight, located in the shadow of the Source Mall in Westbury. Supervisor Murray and Councilwoman Goosby, as well as Hofstra student and history enthusiast Adam Sackowitz, spoke in favor of landmarking the historic site during the Landmarks Commission’s September 18th meeting at Old Town Hall in Hempstead. The officials
expressed concern that any prospective development of the Source Mall sitecould threaten the monument. Given the Landmarks Commission’s unanimous support of the preservation plan, the proposal will now go before the Hempstead Town Board – on which Murray and Goosby sit – for a final decision. “I would like to thank
the town Landmarks P r e s e r v a t i o n C o m m i s s i o n , Councilwoman Dorothy Goosby and Adam Sackowitz for their support in helping to preserve Charles Lindbergh’s 1927 take-off site, an important landmark in the Town of Hempstead and a piece of aviation history in our nation,” stated Murray. “I am confident that efforts

monument and site would be safeguarded against alteration, development or other construction. In fact, property owners would be required to seek the approval of the town’s Landmarks Commission to make any alterations to the monument and a small section of grass surrounding it. At the same time, the officials stated that the designation would not hamper commercial development of the rest of the property, which is currently home to the Source Mall. The Supervisor and Councilwoman pointed out that the area under consideration for landmark status is a small grassy median and the stone monument, which are on a perimeter roadway median behind the mall. What’s more, the designation would not impact the site of the mall building or any likely replacement structure. “Protecting our region’s history is part of preserving our identity,” concluded Murray. “And, we have been wisely cautioned by a saying that proclaims, ‘a generation which ignores history has no past – and no future.’ For the sake of our children and future generations, let’s stake our claim to both our history and the future.”

Dear Readers, This is three year-old Dharma. She is one of the rescued dogs I wrote about last week, and her story breaks my heart. Dharma’s ear has been badly ripped (healing now), her face is scarred and bares witness to the unspeakably cruel life she has led. Apparently, she was used as bait to train the fighting dogs. Perhaps she was chosen because she is petite (only 36 lbs), demure and sweet. Despite the unthinkable cruelty that she has suffered at the hands of man, she loves people. She is truly a special soul and deserves to be in a loving home with people who will cherish her and return the love she is so anxious to give. To quote Brookhaven Animal Shelter director Dori Scofield, “She forgives the humans who mistreated her. After all, dogs are most forgiving creatures. They put us humans to shame.” Dharma is all gentleness and loves to give kisses. You can see the sweetness of her soul shinning in her bright eyes. Unfortunately, Dharma has been bitten and attacked by the fighting dogs in training so many times that she must be the only dog in the household. Readers, can you give Dharma the opportunity to live the kind of life that she deserves to have? Her suffering has touched me deeply. Please call the Brookhaven Animal Shelter at 631.286.4940 and consider opening your hearts and home to this gentle loving girl. I would love to hear from the special person who adopts Dharma. Please visit a shelter and adopt. Remember, Your Best Friend Is Waiting...

AARP Foundation TaxAide, the nation’s largest free, volunteer-run tax preparation and assistance service, is seeking volunteers across the state to help New York taxpayers who are seeking assistance preparing and filing their 2012 tax returns. Volunteers do not need to be an AARP member or retiree to participate. AARP Foundation TaxAide volunteers receive free tax training and are reimbursed on a limited basis for qualified program-related expenses. They help taxpayers at sites around the state, learning new skills while giving back to countless communities. “This year, we’ve assisted thousands of people in preparing and filing their tax returns,” said Will Stoner, Associate State Director on Long Island. “We could not do it without our volunteers, who make an indelible mark on the communities they help.”

This year, Beach Cleanup 2012 was held on Saturday, September 15th, at Robert Moses State Park, Field #2 from 10 a.m. until 12 noon. Hundreds of volunteers combed the beaches and collected over 2000 pounds of debris. For the 26th year, Beach Cleanup 2012 was another big success! “Thank you to everyone who came out for Beach Cleanup 2012,” Senator Johnson said. “We had a wonderful response again this year. Our 345
volunteers gathered a ton of garbage from the beach and helped raise awareness about the harmful effects of littering and dumping on our shores. Thanks also to all who brought along donations for our local food pantries.” The data collected from the Beach Cleanup will be compiled by the American Littoral Society and sent to the Ocean conservancy in Washington, D.C., where it will be analyzed and compared with data from around the world.
The information is used to develop national and international programs and policies to control debris so that our beaches will remain clean and safe. It is also used by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation to evaluate the effectiveness of existing laws and programs to prevent debris from washing up in the first place. The Long Island Beach Buggy Association and the Long Island State Park Region cosponsored the

Are You Ready I was never an Apple person. I learned on a PC, I used them throughout my high school and college days, and I couldn’t fathom – or didn’t want to, more accurately – ever learning to use a Mac, let alone liking it. Well, all that changed once I became introduced to the Apple world at my first office job. Now, not only do I prefer it, but I don’t even remember how to work my way around a PC. Everything seems so much easier and userfriendly that I can’t recall why, exactly, I was ever so opposed to broadening my horizons. Now, I’m not fully indoctrinated mind you. I own an iMac, a couple of iPods and – finally, after years of carrying around an outdated, semi-obsolete “flip” phone – an iPhone 4S (iPad to follow at some point in the near future I’m sure). I have never camped out for a product, I don’t upgrade every time a new one comes out and I’m sure there are many who are far more educated when it
comes to using them. But still, I love Apple, especially my iPhone. To be fair, given my prior cell phone experience, just about anything short of a tin can with a string would seem like an amazing upgrade. But this truly is. And my favorite part of it all? Why, that would be Siri. Siri, the “Intelligent Assistant” who comes pre-installed on the iPhone 4S and 5 models… Siri, who, for all his/her (“I was not assigned a gender,” it replies when questioned) quirks and occasional glitches, has quite the personality. Obviously, it was designed to be utilized in such a way as to make life easier by creating reminders, providing directions, weather updates and more. Not that I have used it for this purpose too often. No, I prefer to antagonize my poor little personal assistant with bizarre, out-ofleft field queries – just to see what responses I might get. I remember shortly after purchasing my iPhone when I decided to experiment with the Q&A possi-
bilities. Most were met with “I’m sorry. I don’t understand. Did you mean…” or some variation of that. Exasperated, I finally exclaimed at one point, “Why are you so dumb?!” Without missing a beat, Siri replied, “Why do you hate me? You don’t even know me!” Hysterical laughter. Seriously? This thing was obviously so much smarter than it let on. Fast forward to just a little over a month ago, after Siri and I had more of an opportunity to become acquainted, and I asked, “Siri, did you know today is my birthday?” He/she/it responded, “I’m so sorry Jamie, I didn’t know. I didn’t get you anything.” Apparently, we were now friends. With the launch of the new iPhone and software update, Siri is now being marketed as “new and improved” and able to overcome many of the previous glitches that had previously marred its novelty. Just imagine all the fun conversations to be had now! Most definitely an Apple person now. No going back.

highest rank. “Parade Co-Chair Tom Fabian and I were happy the parade stepped off on time and the ceremonies that followed stayed on schedule. Despite the looming threat of rain, the day’s events amounted to the finest tribute that Council could carryout in recognition of Scouting history and the Eagle Scout Award. Having the Eldred family members present made the day very significant and memorable. Everyone was impressed by the number of boys in uniform. Seeing them march was a positive reflection of our Scouting program in Nassau County,” said Steve Herman, Eagle Centennial Parade Chair. “The parade was a highlight in our Council’s history. The thousands of Boy Scouts marching in uniform to the Arthur R. Eldred Park for a ceremony in his honor was very impressive. For 100 years scout leaders, families and friends have encouraged and supported boys here in Nassau County to follow Eldred’s example and work to achieve the rank of Eagle. The presence of Eldred’s relatives at the ceremony made the day even more memorable. The parade reminded folks that every Boy Scout, regardless of their rank, has the opportunity to make friends, take part in wholesome activities and prepare to be a leader and responsible citizen,” said Jay Garee, Scout Executive/CEO, TRC-BSA. Since 1912, more than two million young men have achieved the prestigious Boy Scouts of America Eagle Scout Award. In addition to Eldred, Eagle Scouts

Thousands of spectators watched as 2,000 plus Eagle Scouts, Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, Police Explorer Scouts, Boy Scout leaders and dignitaries marched in the Eagle Scout Centennial Parade held recently in Rockville Centre. Nassau County’s Theodore Roosevelt Council of Boy Scouts of America (TRCBSA) and the National Eagle Scout Association – Arthur R. Eldred Chapter, sponsored the Eagle Scout Centennial Parade and commemorative ceremony to pay tribute to Arthur R. Eldred, the first Eagle Scout and the more than two million Eagle Scouts in America. Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano spoke at the ceremony congratulating the Council, Eagle Scouts and Boy Scouts on the occasion of the 100th anniversary, recognizing that the parade symbolized the impact that the Boy Scouts of America has had on millions of boys across the nation. The ceremony paid special tribute to the Arthur R. Eldred. Several Eldred family members, who followed in Arthur’s footsteps and also attained the rank of Eagle Scout, were present, including his son Bill Eldred, two grandsons Bill Eldred and Jim Hudson and a great grandson Bobby Hitte. The Boy Scouts of America was founded in 1910 and in 1912, Arthur R. Eldred, of Rockville Centre, N.Y. became the very first Eagle Scout. As a young boy Eldred moved to Long Island and joined a Troop in the Nassau Council of Boy Scouts of America, in Rockville Centre and quickly achieved Scouting’s

Principal Stacy Breslin explained that the Reflection Garden, which was originally created as a memorial for two former colleagues who passed away, has also become an alcove where students and teachers can come to reflect or spend quiet time. Teacher Debra Marks worked diligently over the summer to prepare the Reflection Garden for the fall. She also secured donations of plantings and mulch from Zainos Nursery and benches from Lowe’s of Westbury. “This is a wonderful place for teachers to bring their class for a period of quiet reading, or for staff and students to take a moment to reflect during
their day,” Ms. Breslin stated. The students’ reflections were heartwarming and included the following hopes for the future: “I hope that the world learns to accept other cultures and religions.” “I hope that we can have peace and stop fighting and that soldiers can stop fighting in wars.” “I hope that we don’t get attacked again, and that police and firefighters don’t have to continue to risk their lives.” “I wish for no more wars, an end to poverty and world peace.” “I hope we can all move on.”

East Meadow students at W.T. The index cards were then taken to the school’s Reflection Garden and placed in a box decorated with patriotic colors. After the reflections were deposited, the students received a pin to commemorate this historical day.

football players, cheerleaders and kickline team and marching band members were honored alongside their parents for having dedicated many hours on and off the field. Members of the Board of Education, high school administrators, student council members and coaching staff were also on hand to participate in a ribbon-cutting ceremony with Nassau County Legislator Dennis Dunne (Class of 1968), who donated a new scoreboard for the athletic field. Senior Iliana Tzanis’ impressive singing of the national anthem signaled the official start to the game against Valley Stream South. At halftime, the cheerleaders riled up the crowd with
cheers and stunts, followed by a spectacular musical performance by the marching band and a dancing demonstration by the kickline team. A much-awaited moment then arrived as candidates James Reilly and Felicia Comuniello were named homecoming king and queen, with Devin Votta and Emily Doglio announced as prince and princess. Congratulations are also in order for candidates Rob Cracchiolo, Tom Critelli, Khondker Hossan, Theresa O’Neill, Ashley Stinnet, Caitlin Sweeney, Iliana Tzanis and Matt Wilson, who were members of the homecoming court.

It was a great day of fun and community pride as family, staff and friends gathered for homecoming on the grounds of Levittown’s Division Avenue High School. The kickoff to the weekend commenced with a pep rally in the gymnasium, where students proudly wore their school colors and cheered for their athletes. The Division Avenue marching band led the parade, followed by the kickline team, cheerleaders, Wisdom Avenue’s marching band, homecoming king and queen candidates and students who accompanied colorful and creatively themed class banners. BENEFIT PICNIC - The 4th Annual Picnic to Benefit Autism Speaks was recently held at Wantagh Park. Bob Gayer and his family of Wantagh started this fundraiser in 2009 after a relative of his family was diagnosed with this affliction. Hempstead Town Clerk Mark Bonilla presented a Town of Hempstead Certificate of Recognition to the Gayer Family and commented on the fact that “Autism now affects 1 in 88 children and 1 in 54 boys” and that more communities should be getting involved in finding a cure for this horrific epidemic.
BATTALION PARADE - This year, the Seaford Fire Department hosted Nassau County’s 6th Battalion Parade on September 15th. The 6th Battalion consists of Fire Departments from Seaford, Wantagh, Levittown, Bellmore, North Bellmore, Merrick, East Meadow, Massapequa and North Massapequa. In addition, Fire Departments from Levittown and Amityville marched in the Parade. Seaford’s ex-Chief Ray Kuhner was the Grand Marshal of the parade with Seaford’s ex-Chiefs Fred Roth and Wes Weeks as Marshal. Prior to the parade, an old-fashioned drill took place in which the “Rinky Dinks” racing team of North Bellmore won. Following the parade, there was a block party at the Seaford Fire Department headquarters.

Credit Unions Provide Meals
WREATH PRESENTATION - The Jerusalem Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) presented a wreath at the ceremony held at the Wantagh American Legion Post 1273 to remember the 11th Anniversary of the September 11th, 2001 terrorist attacks.
This summer, 13 Long Island credit unions combined efforts to assist thousands of needy families and children across the region and bring an end to hunger. The collection, which ran from June 2nd to June 30th, was a huge success. Participating credit unions accepted food and monetary donations at their branches and local supermarkets throughout Long Island with all proceeds benefiting Island Harvest and Long Island Cares, Long Island’s leading hunger relief organizations. Together the credit unions collected an astonishing total of 3,460 pounds of food and $31,213.21. After six years of collection, the credit unions are proud to announce that their efforts have produced $247,570.43 and 18,040 lbs. of food for Long Island’s hungry. “The food donated by the Long Island Credit Union Cooperative has allowed us to provide 1,129 meals for families in need,” said Paule T. Pachter, Executive Director of Long Island Cares. “This is enough meals to feed a family of four for the entire summer.” “Summer can be an extra difficult time for families who struggle to find enough to eat, since school breakfast and lunch programs are not available,” said Randi Shubin Dresner, President and CEO of Island Harvest. “Thanks to the generous efforts of each credit union, food
collected will help provide much needed food assistance for children and families.” The participating credit unions included: Bethpage Federal Credit Union, The Heart Center Federal Credit Union, Island Federal Credit Union, Long Island Community Federal Credit Union, Long Island Realtors Federal Credit Union, Nassau Financial Federal Credit Union, NEFCU, North Shore LIJ Health System FCU, People’s Alliance Federal Credit Union, Sperry Federal Credit Union, Teachers Federal Credit Union, Town of Hempstead Employees Federal Credit Union, Winthrop University Hospital Employees Federal Credit Union. Men on the Move Moving & Self-Storage generously donated their services by providing collection boxes and picking up and delivering the collected food. Long Island Cares, Inc. The Harry Chapin Food Bank is Long Island’s first food bank, serving the hungry on Long Island since 1980. Long Island Cares brings together all available resources for the benefit of the hungry on Long Island and provides emergency food where and when it is needed, and sponsors a wide array programs and direct services that help families achieve self-sufficiency. The organization was founded by the late singer/activist Harry Chapin in response to the immediate needs of hungry Long Islanders. It is continued by his wife
and partner Sandy Chapin, a dedicated board of directors and talented staff working out of their 35,000 square foot facility in Hauppauge and storefront hunger assistance center in Freeport. Long Island Cares is a member agency of the Food Bank Association of New York State and Feeding America. For more information visit www.licares.org. Island Harvest Fighting hunger and touching lives, Island Harvest serves as the bridge between those who have surplus food and those who need it, supplying over 570 community-based nonprofit organizations on Long Island with critical food support to help stem the advancing tide of hunger in our communities. Island Harvest has delivered more than 71 million pounds of food, supplementing nearly 66 million meals, since its inception in 1992. In support of its mission to end hunger and reduce food waste on Long Island, the organization is actively involved in education, outreach, advocacy, job training and hunger awareness programs. Island Harvest is a member of Feeding America. For more information about Island Harvest, visit www.islandharvest.org. Long Island Crisis Center (LICC) will hold its 4th Annual Let’s Walk, Let’s Talk…Stepping Together to Prevent Suicide event on Sunday, September 30th on the Boardwalk at Riverside Blvd. in Long Beach. Registration begins at 11 a.m. At 12 noon, a brief program will highlight two high school students: Jamie Isaacs and Brooke DiPalma. Jamie is a victim of intense bullying. She considers herself a strong survivor due to the fact that the bullying started when she was in second grade at 8 years old and lasted till the end of seventh grade at 13 years of age. The bullying only stopped when she transferred to the Knox School in St. James, a private school, where she is currently in 11th grade. During these years, however, she has evolved from victim to activist founding the Jamie Isaacs Foundation For AntiBullying, writing her story in the book, In Jamie’s Words, and working with both local and state legislators to pass strong anti-bullying laws. Brooke DiPalma is a student at West Islip High School who decided to address the issue of suicide prevention and awareness when her father committed suicide. She created the “P.S. I Love You” Campaign that went viral when she did a YouTube video. In the video, she asks everyone to look out and care for others who may be having suicidal thoughts. She designated a day in February in her school to be known as P.S. I Love You Day. Once she spread the word, it was adopted by many other schools, both locally and in other states. On that day, the students raise money and donate the proceeds to organizations that are work in suicide prevention. The Crisis Center was selected by Brooke and her fellow students to be the recipient of 2012’s fundraising. The Crisis Center, now in its 41st year, is dedicated to increasing suicide awareness, educating everyone about the warning signs of suicide, and de-
