Community Foundation Grant The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) is set to receive a $25,000 grant from the Long Island Community Foundation (LICF) to support the creation of a brand new Military Families in Training (M-FIT) Program designed to educate, support, and strengthen military families. Addiction rates among active duty soldiers, returning veterans and the spouses of service men and women are several times higher than rates seen in the general population. Many of the 175,000 returning soldiers who call Long Island “home” bear the scars of war in the form of untreated mental health issues and active addiction. Major depression, anxiety and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are prevalent in this population. Each of those 175,000 returning soldiers

has 4-6 immediate family members who, without family centered services, are at increased risk for a wide variety of mental health disorders and other challenges. M-FIT is a dynamic, evidence-based approach to providing military families with the support they need to live healthy lives. The six-week psycho-educational workshop series targets the root causes of stress and substance abuse in order to end the cycle of addiction. Participants will learn how to deal with stress of deployment, combat and the re-transition back home. The series will seek to enhance family empathy and communication, clarify family boundaries, roles and responsibilities, and strengthen family resiliency among returning service members and their loved ones. The program is open to

returning service man and women, their partners, spouses and parents, as well as their children ages 5-15. The six-week series will launch in Southampton, Riverhead, Huntington and Mineola in early 2013, and is expected to serve more than 100 military families on Long Island. “War takes an incredible toll on the emotional and mental health of our veterans and unfortunately they often find themselves fighting another kind of battle at home,” said David Okorn, executive director of LICF. “LICADD provides our heroes and their families with the counseling and treatment they need and deserve.” LICADD Executive Director Dr. Jeffrey Reynolds says support for M-FIT comes at the perfect time. “With a documented upswing in addiction rates among military members and their families, it is essential

that we address the needs of this community and this grant from the Long Island Community Foundation will help make that possible.” The Long Island Community Foundation (LICF) is the Island’s community foundation, making grants to improve our region and helping donors with their philanthropy since 1978. Are you or someone you love, a returning veteran adjusting to life at home? M-FIT can provide you with military familyfocused services that can ease the stress and tension you may be feeling during the transition. For more information about M-FIT, or any of LICADD’s prevention education, substance abuse counseling and/or treatment referral services, please call 516.747.2606 or visit www.licadd.org.

Flipping The Switch By: Jamie Lynn Ryan There comes a time when you just have to tune things out. That point when all the chaos surrounding you simply needs to be shut off and pushed aside. The moment when all the pointless discourse and frantic commotion dissolves into simple background noise. Peace and quiet…and clarity. We all strive for this. And often, we would not find it so difficult to achieve – if not for the distraction of others. Ah, but to live a solitary life devoid of all nuisance…what kind of existence would that be? And so we must learn to tolerate, to adjust, to find that happy medium between blatant rudeness and healthy…

distance, shall we say. This is not to say we should be uninvolved in life; but sometimes, that fine line between being involved and being overtaken by nonsense is far too important to overlook. We should only become caught up in those things which are healthy and beneficial to us in the long run. Leave the rest behind. The problem is that, while, philosophically, this theory makes perfect sense, putting it into practice is far easier said than done when faced with reality. Anyone who deals with people on a daily basis, whether complete strangers or those near and dear, can surely attest to this fact. Love them or hate them, we are destined to clash with others more often than

not. It’s simple human nature. The trick is to save these so-called “battles” for the important issues. And while, in the heat of the moment, each and every issue may seem equally dire, rest assured, they are not. Take a step back, take a deep breath, and heed the following: “Frame every so-called disaster with these words: In five years, will this matter?” In most cases, the answer will be a clear and unequivocal “no.” So move on. Let it go. Forgive and forget. Don’t allow yourself to get hung up on the small stuff. In five years’ time, it won’t matter. Focus on today – and finding that elusive peace within yourself.

Influenza in New York State (NYS) has been widespread for the past two months and is significantly more prevalent at this time of year as compared to the past several years. To date, there have been more than 19,000 laboratory-confirmed cases reported since seasonal influenza testing began in October 2012, compared to 4,400 cases during all of the 2011-2012 influenza season. Currently, there have been 2,884 laboratory confirmed hospitalizations associated with influenza. There are 2 reported pediatric influenza-related deaths on LI. In light of the widespread influenza activity across NYS and most of the nation, the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) continues to strongly advise all New Yorkers who have not already received their influenza vaccine to do so immediately. Make sure all children are immunized. PEDIATRIC IMMEDIATE CARE PROVIDES PRESERVATIVE-FREE FLU SHOTS AND NASAL SPRAY AT AT NO COST TO ALL UNDER 19 YEARS OF AGE.

and does not cause severe symptoms often associated with influenza illness. (In clinical studies, transmission of vaccine viruses to close contacts has occurred only rarely.) Side effects can include runny nose, wheezing, headache, low grade fever, muscle aches and vomiting. Q: What else can I do to prevent getting or spreading the flu? A: Here are some things you can do: • Get vaccinated! Ask your friends to get vaccinated. • Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue and then throw the tissue in the garbage. • Stay away from people who are sick. • Wash your hands often with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. • If someone in the house is sick, if possible, try to keep them in a separate area. • Keep surfaces like tables, sinks, counters and toys clean by

wiping them down with a household disinfectant (follow instructions on the label). Q: If I am concerned that vaccines cause autism, what is the harm of withholding vaccines? A: Autism is also common in countries where there are no vaccines. Your child may develop severe illness which is easily vaccine - preventable. I hope this helps you to better understand what the flu is, and how you can protect yourself and your family from getting this illness. I wish you health and happiness. If I can be of further assistance, please let me know. Urszula K Rakowska, MD, FAAP, MBA, CPE Assistant Professor of Pediatric Emergency Medicine 631.864.7337 or gp@pediatricimmediatecare.com

Get Vaccinated. Vaccination is the best protection against contracting the flu. Everyone 6 months of age and older should get vaccinated against the flu as soon as the 2012-2013 season vaccine is available in your area. If you do contract the flu, talk to your doctor about antivirals. Antiviral drugs are prescription medicines (pills, liquid or an inhaler) that can be used for prevention or treatment of flu viruses. If you get sick, antiviral drugs can make your illness milder and make you feel better faster. Flu Facts: • The flu is caused by a virus called influenza • Flu is a contagious illness that is spread in droplets made by people when they talk, sneeze or cough. These droplets can then infect another person when they inhale them. • Less commonly, a person might also get flu by touching an object that has the flu virus on it and then touching their own mouth, eyes or nose. • Once infected, you may pass the virus to others even about a day before you begin to have symptoms yourself. • Flu can cause a mild to severe illness and even death, especially in the very young or old, pregnant women or people with other medical illnesses (i.e.: asthma, diabetes) • The best way to prevent the flu is by getting a flu vaccine each year. Q: Who should get the flu vaccine? A: Beginning this year with the 2012-2013 influenza season, the CDC recommends that everyone 6 months and older should get a flu vaccine each year. The single best way to prevent the flu is to get a flu vaccine each year.

Q: What types of vaccinations are available? A: The two types of flu vaccines are: • The “flu shot”: an inactivated vaccine which contains killed virus that is given by injection. It is approved for use in people 6 months of age and older, including healthy people, people with chronic medical conditions and pregnant women. • The nasal spray flu vaccine: a vaccine made with live, but weakened, flu virus that cannot cause the flu in a healthy person. This is approved for use in healthy people 2-49 years old (not pregnant). Q: What are the Side Effects of the two vaccine types? A: Different side effects can be associated with the flu shot and nasal vaccine. The flu shot: You cannot get the flu from a flu shot. Some minor side effects that could occur are: soreness, redness, or swelling at the site of injection, low-grade fever, muscle aches. If they are going to occur at all, they begin soon after the vaccination and usually last 1 to 2 days. Almost all people who receive influenza vaccine have no problems from it. The nasal spray: The nasal-spray vaccine has weakened viruses

MSG Entertainment and the Garden of Dreams Foundation are pleased to announce that legendary broadcaster and 24-time Emmy Award-winner Bob Costas has been named host of Garden of Laughs, a comedy event presented by Chase to benefit the Garden of Dreams Foundation. The special evening is set to take place on Saturday, January 26th, at The Theater at Madison Square Garden. “I am honored to host Garden of Laughs and support the significant work of the Garden of Dreams Foundation,” said Costas. “It will be a very entertaining event for an important and worthy cause. I’m truly looking forward to being at The Garden for this special night.” Costas’ experience in broadcasting runs almost the entire spectrum of sports, having covered

the NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL, the Olympic Games, College Basketball, Horse Racing and more. A 24time Emmy Award winner, he has the additional distinction of having been nominated for an Emmy in five different categories. He is the only person ever to win Emmys for news, sports, and entertainment. Costas has been named Sportscaster of the Year a record eight times by the National Sportswriters and Sportscaster Association. Beyond sports, Costas is well known for his interviews with people from all walks of life, especially comedians. His rapport and revealing conversations with countless comedy legends are another reason he is well suited to be part of this event. Along with Costas, Garden of Laughs, which is being Executive Produced by Emmy Award-

winner Rory Rosegarten, will feature stand-up performances by some of the biggest names in comedy including Adam Ferrara, Darrell Hammond, Robert Klein, Brian Regan, Ray Romano, and Wanda Sykes. Joining this celebrated comedic line-up will be an esteemed list of entertainment and sports icons, who will serve as presenters for this very special occasion. The evening will benefit the Garden of Dreams Foundation, which works with all areas of The Madison Square Garden Company, including MSG Entertainment, the Knicks, the Rangers, the Liberty, MSG Networks and Fuse to make dreams come true for children facing obstacles. “As a renowned sportscaster and television’s most honored studio host, Bob Costas is a legend. We are long-time

fans of his and extremely grateful that he would graciously donate his time to serve as the Master of Ceremonies for this special event,” said Rosegarten. Distinguished Artists An afternoon of jazz with the Carol Sudhalter Group, an afternoon of cabaret and American standards with the Tangletown Trio, an afternoon featuring works From Bach To Broadway by Dean Karahalis and the New York Brass Choir highlight the upcoming “Distinguished Artists” concerts series for January 2013, it was announced by Town Councilman Chris Coschignano. “The Town’s ‘Distinguished Artists’ concert series represent an opportunity for residents to enjoy free musical performances, held throughout the year, at local libraries,” Town Councilman Coschignano said. “Kicking off the 2013 season, the Town’s Department of Community and Youth Services have

lined up some truly noteworthy performers throughout the month of January.” Town Councilman Coschignano noted that for the remainder of January, there are five performances scheduled, all of which are conveniently listed on the Town calendar. On January 20th, at 2 p.m. at the Hicksville Public Library, located at 169 Jerusalem Avenue in Hicksville, the Tangletown Trio will present an afternoon of “wine, women and song,” featuring a cabaret of American Jazz Standards and Musical Theater. On January 26th, at 8 p.m. at the Syosset Public Library, located at 225 South Oyster Bay Road in Syosset, vocalist Annie Kozuch and pianist Frank

Ponzio, present residents with an opportunity to sample ‘bossa nova and music from Mexico.’ And to round out the month’s performances, on January 27th, at 2 p.m. at the Bethpage Public Library, located at 47 Powell Avenue in Bethpage, Dean Karahalis and the New York Brass Choir present an afternoon of ‘Bach to Broadway.’ C o u n c i l m a n Coschignano noted that the “Distinguished Artists” concert series is sponsored by the Cultural and Performing Arts (CAPA) Division of the Town of Oyster Bay’s Department of Community & Youth Services. Anyone interested in obtaining a schedule of free concerts should call 516.797.7900.
