On March 7th, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. held its Alzheimer’s Disease Education Conference and Expo 2013 at the Melville Marriott. Approximately 60 vendors and 300 people were in attendance for this event. The conference featured numerous breakout sessions, including a caregiver discussion panel facilitated by ADRC Instructor Ellen Tolle, RN, MPS, who encouraged caregivers to discuss the challenges and experiences they encountered when
caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease and a session on “Legal Planning and Eldercare Concerns for the Caregiver and Person with Dementia” presented by Frank Buquicchio, Esq, Member, ADRC’s Legal Advisory Committee. This year’s keynote speaker was Bobbie Braun, a local artist, designer and philanthropist. During her speech, Ms. Braun talked about what it was like to care for parents who were living with Alzheimer’s Disease. She shared with those in attendance the ups and downs, the humor

and the complexity of finding the right care for her parents. Thrown into her care giving role on a moment’s notice, Ms. Braun worked diligently to develop what is an evolving long-term care plan while advocating on behalf of her parents to ensure quality care and maintaining the flexibility needed to address a moving disease process. For more information about ADRC, please contact Mary Ann MalackRagona at 631.820.8068 or visit www.ADRCinc.org.

This event is co-sponsored by radio stations WBAB, WBLI and the Natural Heritage Trust. In addition to the hunt, there will be a petting zoo, temporary tattoos, pony rides, environmental crafts, a visit by the Spring Bunny and more. All activities are free. Belmont Lake State Park is located in North Babylon at Exit 38 on the Southern State Parkway. For additional information, contact 631.321.3510.

Perception is everything. Reality is secondary. Seems like it should be the other way around, doesn’t it? And yet, how often do we form our opinions of someone based solely upon an initial, sometimes completely skewed, impression? Feel vs. facts. Sometimes, a gut feeling is the right one. Other times, more careful consideration is needed. But how to determine the difference…that is the question. I have often been told that I form opinions about others far too quickly, leaving little room for the actual process of becoming acquainted. It’s basically black and white, no

shades of gray along the way. Not a great way to be, I’ll be the first to admit; especially because, what happens when the tables are turned and someone makes the exact same snap judgment about you? Not a fair assessment, is it? I’m not sure what changed over the years. I don’t think I was always like this. But lately, my level of impatience and intolerance has grown by leaps and bounds. I’d like to think it all started with my experiences with various members of the fast food industry and their general level of incompetence at the drive-thru. But perhaps that was just the trigger. In any case, I do take exception when others exhibit
the same level of annoyance without taking the time to truly get to know me. This has caused me to take a step back and reevaluate others’ perceptions of me lately. What’s that they say about never judging a person until you have walked a mile in their shoes? True words indeed. Perhaps we should all take that step back and not rush to judge. Sure, some initial impressions are spot on – but what harm does it do to take a little extra time to either confirm or refute that gut feeling? None, so far as I can tell. And who knows, you might just find a new friend in the process.

Visual Arts Scholar
Hicksville High School senior Brian Parisi was named the Nassau County Visual Arts Scholar for the month of October by the Long Island Arts Alliance and Newsday. He was awarded this title in recognition of his ongoing achievements both academically and as
an artist. Brian was honored at the opening ceremony for the LIAA’s Scholar-Artist program at the Usdan Center for the Arts and will again be recognized in the spring at the Scholar-Artist ceremony to be held at the Tilles Center at C.W. Post. Each school year, the

LIAA and Newsday honor only 10 Nassau County students who have excelled academically and artistically. Brian is just one example of the high academic and artistic talent that is being fostered in the Hicksville school system.
The Physical Education Demonstration at Charles Campagne Elementary School in the Bethpage School District is an exciting annual event for fifth-grade students that serves to culminate the curriculum in a meaningful way.
The performance features various athletic events including Beachball Volleybop, Fitness Math, Balloon Pop and Crab Soccer to challenge students’ balance, handeye coordination and mathematical skills through fun, interactive
and team-building exercises. Charles Campagne has been hosting this event, which is held during the day for students and again at night for parents, for more than 25 years.

Send In Your Photos Residents are invited to send in their photos for consideration for use in a Town publication. According to Town Councilman Joe Muscarella, the current season of winter transforming into spring presents many opportunities for photos to be taken. “If you flip through the pages of the 2013 Town Calendar you’ll see some of the many great photos submitted by our residents,” Councilman Muscarella said. “I encourage everyone to start taking pictures, or go through photos you’ve already taken, depicting the people, places, community events and scenery throughout the Town of Oyster Bay for use in upcoming Town publications.” The Councilman went on to say that photos
must be taken within the confines of the Town of Oyster Bay. Digital submissions are preferred, but professionally developed photos, not inkjet printouts, may also be submitted. E-mailed photos, preferably in a jpeg format, should be sent to the Town’s Public Information Office at m k a n e @ o y s t e r b a y - n y. gov. Printed photographs should be mailed to Oyster Bay Town Hall, Attention Public Information Office, Calendar Photo Submissions, 54 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay NY 11771. Entrants will be notified if their photos are selected for the calendar. Residents should make sure their name, address, phone number and photo description accompany the photograph. Do not write in ink on the back of the picture. The photographer is responsible for the
correct spelling of the names of the subjects in the photos, as well as notifying subjects that their picture may appear in a Town of Oyster Bay calendar or other Town material. You may be asked to supply a waiver if your photo is selected. “The Town of Oyster Bay is a photographer’s dream, and the remaining winter and start of spring will provide countless opportunities to take beautiful pictures,” Councilman Muscarella said. “In addition to our many parks and beaches, the Town of Oyster Bay boasts a wealth of historic sites, museums and other places of interest that could be the subject of a great photo. So, whether photography is your passion, your hobby, or just an occasional pastime, grab your camera, go outside and start snapping.”
Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto, together with Kids Helping Kids by Kids Way, Inc. co-Founders Robert A.J. Eslick and Philip M. Eslick, announce their co-sponsored Kids of Distinction Scholarship Program for 2013. “The ‘Kids of Distinction’ Scholarship Program was initiated in an effort to recognize outstanding young people who have been active in exceptional endeavors in their community,” Supervisor Venditto said. “As in years past, six exceptional Town of Oyster Bay youngsters will be honored for their commitment to their communities.” “The concept of the program is to recognize kids for taking part in activities done on their own initiative,” Philip said. “Past winners have certainly fit the bill, many going above and beyond the call of duty to help others in their community.” The Kids of Distinction program focuses on activities participated in outside of school. These activities should have, in some way, benefited the community. “Each year, applicants represent a diverse group who really demonstrate caring and compassion
to those around them,” Supervisor Venditto said. Robert added, “We are confident that this year’s group of winners will be equally compassionate and worthy of this honor. To date Kids Helping Kids has distributed $30,000 in academic scholarships to help these students fund their college education and in these tough economic times every dollar helps.” Nominees will be placed in two categories, those currently in fifth through eighth grade and those in grades nine through 12. The age groups were established so nominees can be evaluated fairly against their peers. Three winners will be selected in each category by a committee organized by Kids Helping Kids. “There are so many wonderful young people living in the Town of Oyster Bay who not only demonstrate academic or extracurricular skills, but also do a little something extra to help make the world a better place,” Supervisor Venditto said. “We felt it was important to recognize our young residents who involve themselves in voluntary community, charity or civic activities on their own individual initiative.” Anyone who wishes to
nominate a student should fill out a nominating form and submit it to Kids Helping Kids by Kids Way, Inc., prior to the May 15th, 2013 deadline. Nominating forms can be obtained at Town Halls North (Oyster Bay) and South (Massapequa), as well as at local libraries. Nominating forms can also be found on the Town’s Web site, www.oysterbaytown.com. Winners will be recognized at an upcoming special ceremony held by the Oyster Bay Town Board and will be presented a $500 scholarship from Kids Helping Kids by Kids Way Inc. (courtesy of sponsors: Empire Bakery Equipment-owner Mr. Claude Zarate, and NY Auto Giant- Chief Operating Officer Mr. John Pickett) and a Kids Helping Kids commemorative plaque. For more information on the Kids of Distinction Scholarship Program please call Kids Helping Kids by Kids Way Inc. at 516-249-9449 or e-mail Kids Helping Kids at HappyKidsClub@aol.com. Prospective applicants are also encouraged to visit the Town’s website, www. oysterbaytown.com, to view the video presentation of the 2011 Kids of Distinction ceremony.

Global Efforts
Alec Urbach, a film student at the Long Island High School for the Arts and a senior at Roslyn High School, was named a Distinguished Finalist in the national 2013 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program. Alec is one of only eight students in New York State to be chosen for the award, which honors young people for outstanding acts of volunteerism and impressive community service activities. Alec earned the award for his impressive global
education efforts, for which he founded the nonprofit organization Giving From the Ground Up in 2009, to help educate students in Africa. With the help of his teachers, Alec methodically developed his own curriculum to teach basic math, science and hygiene. He approached his lessons through his most beloved medium — film. He began with rudimentary animations, crafting his scripts from American lesson plans, but his work quickly evolved. Today, Alec’s beloved characters Finnius Fox and Patty the Hummingbird are helping children in developing nations to better understand their lessons. Giving From the Ground Up is now Alec’s Animated Schoolhouse and has a volunteer core 500 strong in several nations including Ghana, Botswana and Togo.
His videos reach nearly a quarter of a million students, with plans to expand to South America. “You are an exemplary role model for your peers,” wrote Prudential Chairman and CEO John Strangfeld in a congratulatory letter to Alec. “Thank you for your inspiring commitment to serving your community. Contributions like yours make our communities and our entire nation stronger. We salute you.” “It’s a real honor for me to be recognized for my efforts at effecting positive change,” said Alec. “Everyone has their own, innate ability to make the world a better place. My path is through improving education. There’s a real barrier to literacy for these children,” he says of the students his Schoolhouse reaches. “I’m working to help them break through it.”

SOUTH BAY SUCCESS STORY! TROOPER, the Poodle who had his eye surgically removed after being hit by a car in Wyandanch, was recently adopted. A lovely family saw him in South Bay - he looked just like their Bichon mix that had died. They called Babylon Shelter and were told he had been moved to Last Hope. The family rushed right down to Wantagh and, after going through the adoption process, took Trooper home. He is doing wonderfully with their other Bichons, kids, everyone... he fit right in! Here he is pictured in his new home.

PRAYER TO THE BLESSED VIRGIN (Never know to fail) Oh most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine, splendor of heaven, blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh Star of the Sea, help me and show me herein you are my mother. Oh Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart, to succor me in this necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh show me herein you are my mother. Oh Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee. (3x) Holy Mother, I place this cause in you hands. (3x) Holy Spirit, You who solve all problems, light all roads to that I can attain my goal. You, that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy toward me and mine. Amen. The person must say this prayer 3 consecutive days. After 3 days, the request will be granted. This prayer must be published after the favor is granted. BA

Nutrition Power
In honor of March as National Nutrition Month, Kramer Lane Elementary School hosted a nutrition workshop titled KidPower: Lunch Line. The presenter, who disguised himself as a superhero and a
scientist throughout the performance, used 3-D video, singalong songs and interactive games to reinforce healthy habits such as always starting the day with breakfast and the importance of vegetables in one’s diet. Using the 3-D
components, he took the K-5 students on a virtual tour through the body’s digestive process and explained the new My Plate model of how many grains, vegetables, proteins and fats should be eaten every day.
