tudents from the seven Hicksville elementary schools are offering to be “little doctors” by actively participating in blood drives coordinated by building PTAs and the New York Blood Center. Students are provided with hospital lab coats and given instruction on how to best assist potential donors before clinicians take over the process. More importantly, the students help those who have just given blood recover by serving replenishing drinks and snacks.

Condensing The Collections By: Jamie Lynn Ryan How many songs do you have on your iPod? Do you even listen to half of them? And what about that CD collection? Is it gathering dust on some rack or – better yet – packed away in a box with all the other electronics of yesteryear? You know, next to the famous 8-tracks, cassettes, VHS tapes and vinyl that everyone seems in such a rush to get rid of. Personally, I will never discard my CD collection. In fact, while in the process of shopping for a TV stand/ entertainment center, one of my main criteria was finding a piece with enough shelving to accommodate
my massive music collection. Sure, most of my favorite songs are already stored on my computer, my iPod, my iPhone…but still, there’s nothing quite like putting on a CD and listening to the tracks in sequence – back when an album was an entire concept, rather than a string of hit singles thrown together. I can understand the attachment people have to their records – to anything that encapsulates a moment in time in their respective lives, really. I have a hard time throwing anything out – mostly for sentimental reasons – hence the massive collection of CDs… and books…and videos… and knick-knacks. Sure, some are obsolete and serve no real
purpose – but they’re mine. They each have a story and a memory associated with them and, even if I’ve outgrown the need to display certain mementos, you can bet they will be carefully packed away in a box sooner than kicked to the curb. Don’t get me wrong – I’m by no means a hoarder, nor will you ever see three quarters of the things I have meticulously catalogued and saved through the years out in the open – as long as they are stored away for safe-keeping, ready to reminisce over whenever the moment strikes. As for my CDs, I just can’t bear to put them away in a box. Not yet. Good thing my wall unit has shelves.

Michell walked away with his hand raised after a hardfought match against Wolff, having earned his first victory on the wrestling mat. Kevin impressed his teammates, coaches, family members and school faculty with a courageous showing, and East Meadow also showed great sportsmanship by giving Kevin a warm welcome and a hearty round of applause for his hard work and determination. “Every day that Kevin comes to practice, he just gets better and better,” said
Hicksville Meteors cohead coach Andrew Fleitman. “I love working with him – he’s a great competitor.”

Kevin Michell, a seventh-grader from Hicksville Middle School who has cerebral palsy, showed tremendous bravery on March 20th, as he accomplished his longtime dream of wrestling competitively. Kevin spent the winter season as team manager for the Hicksville Meteors middle school boys wrestling squad, but his desire to compete led him to the opportunity of a lifetime in the season finale, as Hickville’s coaching staff granted him the chance to hit the mat for the very first time. He competed in the stacked 134-pound weight class, squaring

an Active Role in Society) clubs, faculty members from both the Long Island and Brooklyn campuses, selected a group of 26 students that were willing to spend their spring breaks rebuilding structures, moving sand, painting and helping in any way possible after Superstorm Sandy tore through the east coast, leaving particularly severe damage in New York and New Jersey. “These groups have been working hard to train, plan, organize and fundraise for this year’s alternative spring break,” said Bryan Gill, moderator of the Habitat for Humanity Club and assistant dean of students and student life on the
Long Island Campus. “With such a large group of volunteers, we will be able to split into smaller groups and reach more communities and help even more people. We will also spend time reflecting on this experience and using the trip as a mini service learning project.” Previous spring break trips for SJC students have included helping to build a day care center and playground in Nicaragua, building homes in Georgetown, South Carolina and rebuilding homes that were destroyed by tornadoes in Joplin, Missouri.

Financial Expert Honored
Lois Cornibert, Levittown branch manager for Astoria Federal Savings Bank, was honored before more than 240 of Long Island’s most ardent public education supporters recently, as one of 14 honorees to receive the Nassau BOCES Education Partner Award. The distinction is bestowed annually on those individuals or organizations that have made a substantial impact on public education in Nassau County. A strategic education partner with school districts since 1967, Nassau BOCES created the awards program to honor those who share its mission of ensuring a successful, challenging, caring and safe environment that enables students of all ages and abilities to achieve their maximum potential. These outstanding individuals have made strides towards accomplishing key educational goals embraced by Nassau BOCES, such as ensuring student success. The awards were presented during a gala held by the Nassau BOCES
Educational Foundation, an independent nonprofit organization that raises funds for innovative educational programs that fall outside of the agency’s budget. “Lois has a passion for helping students to excel,” said Nassau BOCES Board member Martin Kaye. “She opens doors for them. Her influence is life changing. If ever there was a friend to education, it is Lois Cornibert. She is a true role model.” For years, Lois Cornibert has dedicated her time, knowledge and influence to the Island Trees High School School-to-Career program, a dynamic partnership that prepares juniors and seniors to enter the workforce. Starting out as fundraising chairperson for the program, she quickly moved into the role of co-chair, where she helped to develop the program’s advisory board. Cornibert secured Astoria Federal funding for vital School-to-Career initiatives, such as the Students Taking Action for Real Success (STARS) Interview conference. In addition to appropriating
the grant for STARS, she helps plan the workshops, recruit the interviewers and run the overall operations for the conference. Cornibert has served the Chamber of Commerce for 22 years, currently as vice president. She is a member of several boards including the Youth Education Services Community Counseling Center and the Long Island Center for Independent Living. She is also a member of the American Heart Association’s (AHA) Go Red for Women Luncheon committee, and is co-chair of the AHA’s “Circle of Red,” a society dedicated to women’s heart health. A civic activist, Cornibert is a member of the Kiwanis and Lions Clubs of Levittown. “Tonight we are honoring 11 people and three organizations that have all proven that they are innovators as well. Individually and collectively, they have had a powerful impact on public education in this county – and we have all benefited from their efforts,” said Nassau BOCES District Superintendent Dr. Thomas Rogers.
Beloved Teacher Honored
Renee Tarzia, special education teacher at the Nassau BOCES Career Preparatory High School, was honored before more than 240 of Long Island’s most ardent public education supporters recently, as one of 14 honorees to receive the Nassau BOCES Education Partner Award. The awards were presented during a gala held by the Nassau BOCES Educational Foundation, an independent non-
profit organization that raises funds for innovative educational programs that fall outside of the agency’s budget. “Renee is a role model for her colleagues and students alike,” said Nassau BOCES District Clerk Susan Bergtraum. “She accentuates her students’ strengths and helps them to improve their weaknesses. She has high expectations for each of her students and empowers them to exemplary performance. Her honesty, dependability, hard work and commitment make her a standout in the field of education.” Renee Tarzia has been a teacher at the Career Preparatory High School for the past nine years. The school serves a unique population of special education students whose needs cannot be met in their home schools for a variety of reasons. She works closely with these students to challenge them academically, build their self-esteem, improve their social skills and make them career ready. Tarzia collaborated with her colleagues to create the career-planning course, which students use as a “reference guide”
throughout the year. She facilitates a unique jobreadiness program at Hofstra University, where students participate in work-study and internship programs, exploring transitional goals and receiving practical, realworld job training. “I truly believe that all of my students have tremendous potential to succeed,” said Tarzia. “At first, many students doubt that they are able to meet my standards, but by the end of the first marking period they are surprised by their own success. I see it as my duty to explore every possible avenue to relate to each child. There is not an evening that I do not reflect upon my day and think about what I can do better tomorrow.” “Tonight we are honoring 11 people and three organizations that have all proven that they are innovators as well. Individually and collectively, they have had a powerful impact on public education in this county – and we have all benefited from their efforts,” said Nassau BOCES District Superintendent Dr. Thomas Rogers.

Services and Director of colorectal Surgery David E. Rivadeneira, MD, FACS, FASCRS, an accomplished colorectal surgeon with board-certification in general surgery as well as colon and rectal surgery. “Statistics show that colon and rectal cancers are now the second most common diagnosed cancer in men and women in the United States today,” said Dr. Rivadeneira. “While our ‘Go Blue Day’ focused on drawing more attention toward the prevalence and seriousness of colorectal cancers, it also celebrated the new hope for more remissions and cures with quicker recovery thanks to today’s colorectal cancer screenings and minimally invasive colorectal procedures including laparoscopic and robotic
surgical procedures.” “Dr. Rivadeneira is a top-flight surgeon who is a strong compliment to Huntington Hospital and our region, bringing a wealth of knowledge and expertise within the areas of colorectal cancer treatment” said Kevin Lawlor, Huntington Hospital’s President and CEO. “Having a cancer and surgical leader like Dr. Rivadeneira among Huntington Hospital’s staff allows us the ability to provide the most upto-date cancer care for our patients through a multidisciplinary team approach that is coupled with not only medical intervention and treatment, but also proactive support and education, which is what ‘Go Blue Day’ is all about.”

National Walking Day In celebration of National Walking Day, on Wednesday, April 3rd, the American Heart Association is encouraging Americans to get fit and have fun by launching Show Us Your Moves. The month-long Instagram promotion encourages consumers to submit photos of their
favorite fun physical activity – dancing, roller skating, walking with friends, gardening – you name it! Selected photos will be featured each week on www.heart.org and various American Heart Association social media pages. By sharing pictures of their physical activity on Instagram with the hashtag
#mymoves, consumers can help spread the notion that exercise can be fun. On National Walking Day, a day where hundreds of thousands across the nation take steps to improve their health, Americans are encouraged to spend at least 30 minutes of their day briskly walking. Physical activity is critical
to being healthy, but less than 50 percent of adults get enough daily exercise. Adults need at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week to see the health benefits of physical activity such as lower blood pressure, improved bone health, weight maintenance after weight loss, better sleep, and more
energy. With Show Us Your Moves, the American Heart Association hopes people will continue to make physical activity a priority beyond National Walking Day and find the fun in being fit. For more information on Show Us Your Moves, visit www.heart.org/ nationalwalkingday to
see promotion rules and directions. To find an American Heart Association Heart Walk in your area and to access healthy living resources including information about getting active and eating healthy, visit My Heart. My Life.
are outstanding academic institutions that also feature some of the nation’s finest athletes. These are sure to be two hard-fought games between collegiate powers, and I believe that seeing these premiere teams in action will help the Town’s young lacrosse players aspire to further their education through athletics.” General admission tickets will be available on game day at the field with proceeds going to Bethpage Educational Foundation, Inc. Donation for adults will be $10 and Children 12 and under will be $5. Attendees are also being asked to bring two cans of food to help support Island Harvest as part of the “LAX Fights Hungers” initiative. Supervisor Venditto said he is already looking forward to the games. “It should be a great experience and a lot of fun for the players and
the fans,” the Supervisor said. “I expect those in attendance will appreciate the opportunity to see these outstanding college teams compete locally. It also is a tremendous source of pride that these high level teams will compete at our local facilities, which are among the finest in the nation.” Supervisor Venditto expressed his appreciation to all those who helped make it possible “I would like to thank all those involved in the planning of this event, especially the Town of Oyster Bay Parks Department and the Bethpage School District,” Supervisor Venditto said. “Without the contributions and support of the many talented and capable people that came together to make “Battle at Bethpage III” a success, none of this would have been possible.”

Sunrise Toyota announced today that it will be sponsoring A Night of Song and Dance at The Gateway Playhouse on Sunday, April 28th. The benefit event will consist of a buffet and silent auction at 5 p.m., followed by a dance performance at 7:30 p.m. Proceeds go to a local Long Island family in need. Deb Cordaro’s on-going battle with cancer has been causing financial stress for her and her family of Ridge. When Jimmy Berg,
owner of Sunrise Toyota heard of the Cordaro’s situation, he immediately wanted to help the family. In addition to sponsoring the benefit, Berg agreed to donate a loaner vehicle from Sunrise Toyota, which was picked up Saturday the 23rd, so the family could take advantage of a timeshare they received for this week’s Spring Break in Florida. While the family is on their “Sunrise Voyage,” Berg is also donating a
portion of every vehicle sold at Sunrise Toyota to the family to help offset the cost of medical treatment. The Cordaro’s “Sunrise Voyage” will be featured on Sunrise Toyota’s Facebook page, so everyone can experience the voyage. Anyone who is not in the market for a vehicle at this time can make a donation to a fund for the Cordaros by calling The Gateway Playhouse at 631.286.1133.
The Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) is pleased to announce that the State Cup will kick off this spring on the weekend of April 6th and 7th. 711 teams from the East End of Long Island to north of Albany have entered the State Cup and are vying to become state champions. “We are looking forward to wonderful competition, hopefully to be played in abundant sunshine this spring,” commented State Cup Chairperson Barbara Rodriguez, an ENYYSA Hall of Famer. As the name implies, the State Open Cup (US Youth Soccer / ENY State Championship) is open to all teams. 283 squads will be playing in this competition primarily for Premier, Division 1 and Division 2 teams. Only State Open Cup champs go on to play in the Regionals with those winners going to the Nationals in the National Championship Series.
The ENY Upper 90 Cup is a new competition this spring. 167 excellent teams in each ENYYSA league who are not Premier League teams are playing in this competition. The finals of both the State Open Cup and ENY Upper 90 Cup are scheduled for Saturday, June 1st and Sunday, June 2nd at Stringham Park in LaGrange. The third competition is the Arch Capital Group Cup with 261 teams competing. For Under-12 and above, it is for travel teams who are still working to rise to the level of the best teams in each ENYYSA league. It is open to all Under-10 and Under-11 teams regardless of skill level. Our sponsor, Arch Capital Group, writes insurance and reinsurance on a worldwide basis through operations in the United States, Bermuda, Canada and Europe, with a focus on specialty lines. “This cup competition is a great event in that it gives young people an
opportunity to experience high levels of competition. And you don’t have to be the best team in the state to win a championship with the Arch Capital Group Cup,” commented Brian Hughes, Senior Vice President and Chief Actuary of Arch Capital. The finals of the Arch Capital Group Cup are scheduled for Saturday, June 8th at the Peter Collins Soccer Park in Plainview, Long Island. Both State Cup championship venues, besides having wellmanicured grass soccer fields, sport 9/11 memorials. RAISING FUNDS - NUMC staff save lives in many ways. The staff of the Emergency Department took the time amidst the commotion of their work days to share Dr. Rosarion’s passion for education and service to benefit women and children in Haiti. A $530 gift was raised on behalf of Eye Of A Dream. This sum will pay in full a year tuition for one of the children in secondary school in Gonaives, Haiti. Dr. Rosarion thanks the emergency department nurses, especially Irene Sheehan, RN, who spearheaded the fundraising.
