BHS was the only Nassau County district at the event, and it was the first time Bethpage was invited to attend. Sun Upholstery & Draperies, located at 30 Stewart Avenue in Huntington, is celebrating 90 years of serving the community. Owner Paul Grimes has been in the field for as long as he can remember, working with his father for many years. He loves the craft and the opportunity to be creative, but mostly, he enjoys seeing the clients’ satisfaction with the finished projects. Sun Upholstery provides all upholstery/ reupholstery and window treatments, including Hunter Douglas and Graber Window Fashions. “But the best part,” said Grimes, “of what we offer is personal, friendly experience.”

They conduct all work on-premises, and the clients are able to benefit from this hands-on attention. As a result of such a personalized approach, Sun Upholstery & Draperies has been honored with numerous awards, and has been recognized by the Huntington Historical Society as the Town’s oldest shop. They have won Best Upholstery & Window Treatments for three years in a row, and were recently inducted into the 2014 Business Hall of Fame. As a means of giving back to the community, Sun Upholstery has donated its services to the Huntington Historical Society in helping with antique restorations. They have also donated floor cushions for the playroom at STEPS To End Family Violence, an agency in East Harlem that provides support for survivors of domestic violence. Sun Upholstery regularly offers holiday specials at the end of each year and, in April, holds an anniversary sale on all outdoor cushions and window treatments for summer. Human Nature? By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Let me start off by saying, accidents happen. We all have our moments of distraction on the road. Add to that, heightened tension due to weather conditions (even if said conditions don’t happen to be a factor at the time, but we’re giving the benefit of the doubt here), and the forces of human nature, mixed with Mother Nature, sometimes create catastrophic results. Where am I going with this tangent, you ask? Just a preface to my recent run-in with a fellow motorist, is all. Well, his runin with me, to be exact. At a red light. Behind a line of about 12 other vehicles. Clearly stopped. Not moving. No ice, no slush, no nothing on the road. Getting the picture? So, obviously, you can imagine my astonishment upon glancing in my rearview mirror – as I habitually do when on the roads

– to see headlights approaching at what seemed too fast for an appropriate slowdown and stop maneuver. Sure enough, there it was, the impact, the sound of car metal crunching and cracking, along with the squeal of brakes. Lovely. Just lovely. Luckily, another one of my driving habits is to leave a bit of room between the front of my car and the one in front of mine, saving me the added inconvenience of continuing the potential chain reaction of collisions. One minor crisis averted. All of this, mind you, and the light had yet to change to green. No sooner did I get my bearings, than the driver – a young, college-aged male with a knit hat – appeared at my driver’s side window to apologize profusely and ask if I was alright. I rolled down my window, clearly angry, and said, “Yeah, I’m fine, but my car sure isn’t.” He continued to apologize and suggested we

pull out of the line of traffic and into the parking lot of an office building right alongside the road. Great idea. As I pulled off to the shoulder and continued into the agreedupon lot, the light changed. Wanting to be sure I was out of the entryway (and further harm’s way), I found a spot off to the side and waited. And waited. I watched the continuous stream of traffic drive by, with no sign of the guilty party. Gone. Took off. You must be kidding. Hence the tangent. And the anger. And the feeling that, in spite of the fact that “accidents happen” from time to time and none of us is perfect, there is no excuse for not owning up to your actions after the fact. That’s just bad karma. So, to the other driver, I hope you can live with your decision to run from your mistake. May you never have the misfortune for someone to do precisely the same thing to you.

TERMS OF SALE Such tax liens shall be sold subject to any and all superior tax liens of sovereignties and other municipalities and to all claims of record which the County may have thereon and subject to the provisions of the Federal and State Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Civil Relief Acts. However, such tax liens shall have priority over the County’s Differential Interest Lien, representing the excess, if any, of the interest and penalty borne at the maximum rate over the interest and penalty borne at the rate at which the lien is purchased. The Purchaser acknowledges that the tax lien(s) sold pursuant to these Terms of Sale may be subject to pending bankruptcy proceedings and/or may become subject to such proceedings which may be commenced during the period in which a tax lien is held by a successful bidder or the assignee of same, which may modify a Purchaser’s rights with respect to the lien(s) and the property securing same. Such bankruptcy proceedings shall not affect the validity of the tax lien. In addition to being subject to pending bankruptcy proceedings and/or the Federal and State Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Civil Relief Acts, said purchaser’s right of foreclosure may be affected by the Financial Institutions Reform, Recovery and Enforcement Act(FIRREA),12 U.S.C. ss 1811 et.seq., with regard to real property under Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation(FDIC) receivership. The County Treasurer reserves the right, without further notice and at any time, to withdraw from sale any of the parcels of land or premises herein listed. The Nassau County Treasurer reserves the right to intervene in any bankruptcy case/litigation where the property affected by the tax liens sold by the Treasurer is part of the bankruptcy estate. However,it is the sole responsibility of all tax lien purchasers to protect their legal interests in any bankruptcy case affecting their purchased tax lien, including but not limited to the filing of a proof of claim on their behalf, covering their investment in said tax lien. The Nassau County Treasurer and Nassau County and its agencies, assumes no responsibility for any legal representation of any tax lien purchaser in any legal proceeding including but not limited to a bankruptcy case where the purchased tax lien is at risk. The rate of interest and penalty at which any person purchases the tax lien shall be established by his bid. Each purchaser, immediately after the sale thereof, shall pay to the County Treasurer ten per cent of the amount for which the tax liens have been sold and the remaining ninety per cent within thirty days after such sale. If the purchaser at the tax sale shall fail to pay the remaining ninety per cent within ten days after he has been notified by the County Treasurer that the certificates of sale are ready for delivery, then all amounts deposited with the County Treasurer including but not limited to the ten per cent theretofore paid by him shall, without further notice or demand, be irrevocably forfeited by the purchaser and shall be retained by the County Treasurer as liquidated damages and the agreement to purchase shall be of no further effect. Time is of the essence in this sale. This sale is held pursuant to the Nassau County Administrative Code and interested parties are referred to such Code for additional information as to terms of the sale, rights of purchasers, maximum rates of interest and other legal incidents of the sale. The Character Attributes Reap Excellence afterschool program at Central Boulevard School in the Bethpage School Districts focuses on community service projects that are of interest to the students and can benefit the surrounding communities. Recently, the program asked Town of Oyster

Bay Animal Shelter representative Brad Panetta to speak with the CARE group about ways they could help the shelter. The CARE group presented Panetta with cards they made to distribute to those who adopt a cat or dog. Photo courtesy of: Bethpage School District

Tracing Roots

As part of the school’s yearlong Symphony Space initiative, Plainview-Old Bethpage Stratford Road Elementary School students performed rap music inspired by their history lessons. Visiting artist Juanita Faulkner, an award-winning classically trained soprano, performed African American music from the pre-Civil War era and showed how the historic tunes inspired modern day rap music. The Symphony Space program aims to teach students about art and music, and how it pertains to New York State history. Students participate in multiple in-school workshops throughout the year, hosted by visiting artists and experts, and take field trips to the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Symphony Space Theater. For more information, residents can visit the Plainview-Old Bethpage School District’s Facebook page at https://www.facebook. Valentine’s Day

Send Us Your Best Pics To Be Featured!

By: Alexandra H. Rodrigues, Massapequa At our very first Love, To think about anything else is tough. Chocolate hearts, roses and more than one kiss Ensures that Valentine’s Day is nothing but bliss. The next time this Love day comes around, Promises to spend life together are given abound. Everlasting love for each other, we swear To please each other, we take care. Life goes on with its sorrow and joy; Valentine’s Day special love again we deploy. There can be times when it is hard not to stray; To mend our commitment, we use this day. Love is an emotion that cannot be forced; Kindness is needed to have it endorsed. Valentine was the name for many a saint Who eagerly a picture of Love did paint. Those who nourished their love till their golden time Have truly received a present divine. No matter what stage you presently display, I wish you a Happy Valentine’s Day.

Winter Snows By: Milicent G.Tycko The flakes of snow Stream down, woefully obliging Gravity and fall over lost Reservoirs of love, forming shadowy Oases of snow dunes. When the waters of my sorrow meet This cold indifferent wall, There is no other way. My arctic tears are whipped to whitest snow That drifts and blows about the countryside. The winter snows remind me now Of poetry, of poems transformed From feelings, sorrows, losses. They sweep across and mass as one. The snowflakes and the sorrow, The shadows and the cold, The fresh and gleaming dune of white, As wondrous as a poem.

LIJSL Convention Even though New York looks like a winter wonderland with all the snow, the Spring Season of the Long Island Junior Soccer League (LIJSL) and Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) is scheduled to begin in five weeks. The traditional kick-off to the Spring Season is the LIJSL Convention, which

will be held on March 6th to 8th. The LIJSL Convention is annually one of the world’s largest soccer conventions as approximately 10,000 people are once again expected to flock to the Huntington Hilton on Route 110 in Melville. “We are very enthusiastic to welcome soccer fans from around the world

to the LIJSL Convention once again,” said Convention Chairperson Holly Maresco. “There are new LIJSL families and players so this will be their first convention and that’s quite exciting too.” The fun begins at 7 p.m. on Friday night, March 6th with the Annual Awards Dinner as the Volunteer of the Year from each LIJSL

club will be honored. Gene O’Connell of the Brentwood Soccer Club, the Sachem Youth Soccer League’s Frank Schmidt, the Hicksville Americans’ Joe Visconti and Jim Volpe from Oceanside United will be inducted into the LIJSL Hall of Fame at the dinner. The Boys-Under-12 and GirlsUnder-12 Sportsmanship

Coaches of the Year as nominated in an essay by their players will be honored as well. Throughout the day on Saturday, March 7th and on Sunday morning, March 8th, there will be LIJSL Sportsmanship Award presentations, meetings for club presidents, coaches and volunteers plus coaches

and referee clinics plus a college forum as thousands of people purchase items from vendors who have come from around the world. Admission to the 33rd Annual LIJSL Convention is free on both Saturday and Sunday. For more information, please contact the LIJSL at 631.648.9020.
