Stony Brook University Cancer Center, Vice Dean, Cancer Medicine, and the Joel Kenny Professor of Medicine, most patients undergoing chemotherapy or radiation therapy require frequent visits to the hospital. “Transportation has been an obstacle for many of our patients who live in Suffolk County,” said Dr. Hannun. “Offering free transportation to and from the Cancer Center is one more way we can serve our patients and ease the burden of their treatment journey.” The idea of the transportation service was initiated by Linda Bily, Cancer Patient Advocacy & Community Outreach Coordinator, and Darlene Kenny, LCSW, Social Worker at the Cancer Center. Debbie Wunderlich, a member of the Cancer Center’s
Advisory Board, arranged for the bus to be donated by We Transport in Nassau County. The vehicle was painted by volunteers from Splashes of Hope, a non-profit agency based in Huntington, NY. Penny’s North Country Car Care in St. James, NY, donated repair services. Through an online voting co-sponsored by Warex Terminals Corporation and CITGO Petroleum Corporation and its Fueling Good program, Stony Brook University Hospital employees helped win $5,000 in free gas for the vehicle. “This is a unique hospital-based program,” Bily said. “Obtaining and refurbishing the bus was a true community partnership in every sense of the word.” For more information, call 631.638.0913 or 631.638.0004.

Stony Brook University Cancer Center has initiated a free transportation service for cancer patients to and from their homes throughout Suffolk County in an effort to provide access to care for patients who need chemotherapy and radiation treatment, and have limited resources to get to the Cancer Center. The Non-Emergency Transportation (NET) program began in November and operates Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Recommendations for the service come from Cancer Center social workers; already more than 25 transports have been made. To qualify for the service, patients complete an application signed by their medical provider. According to Yusuf Hannun, MD, Director,

Continued From 3 roles and responsibilities, and strengthen family resiliency among returning service members and their loved ones. The program is open to returning service man and women, their partners, spouses and parents, as well as their children ages 5-15. The six-week series will launch in Southampton, Riverhead, Huntington and Mineola in early 2013, and is expected to serve more than 100 military families on Long Island. “War takes an incredible toll on the emotional and mental health of our veterans and unfortunately they often find themselves fighting another kind of battle at home,” said David Okorn, executive director of LICF. “LICADD provides our heroes and their families with the counseling and treatment they need and deserve.” LICADD Executive Director Dr. Jeffrey Reynolds says support for M-FIT comes
at the perfect time. “With a documented upswing in addiction rates among military members and their families, it is essential that we address the needs of this community and this grant from the Long Island Community Foundation will help make that possible.” The Long Island Community Foundation (LICF) is the Island’s community foundation, making grants to improve our region and helping donors with their philanthropy since 1978. Are you or someone you love, a returning veteran adjusting to life at home? M-FIT can provide you with military familyfocused services that can ease the stress and tension you may be feeling during the transition. For more information about M-FIT, or any of LICADD’s prevention education, substance abuse counseling and/or treatment referral services, please call 516.747.2606 or visit www.licadd.org.
LONG ISLAND – A new report has just been released which reveals 7 costly mistakes that most homeowners make when selling their home, and a 9 Step System that can help you sell your home fast and for the most amount of money. This industry report shows clearly how the traditional ways of selling homes have become increasingly less and less effective in today’s market. The fact of the matter is that fully three quarters of homesellers don’t get what they want for their home and become disillusioned and - worse - financially disadvantaged when they put their home on the market.
As this report uncovers, most homesellers make 7 deadly mistakes that cost them literally thousands of dollars. The good news is that each and every one of these mistakes is entirely preventable. In answer to this issue, industry insiders have prepared a free special report entitled “The 9 Step System to Get Your Home Sold Fast and For Top Dollar”. To hear a brief recorded message about how to order your free copy of this report, call 1-877-263-6397 and enter ID #1000. You can call anytime, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week . Influenza in New York State (NYS) has been widespread for the past two months and is significantly more prevalent at this time of year as compared to the past several years. To date, there have been more than 19,000 laboratory-confirmed cases reported since seasonal influenza testing began in October 2012, compared to 4,400 cases during all of the 2011-2012 influenza season. Currently, there have been 2,884 laboratory confirmed hospitalizations associated with influenza. There are 2 reported pediatric influenza-related deaths on LI. In light of the widespread influenza activity across NYS and most of the nation, the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) continues to strongly advise all New Yorkers who have not already received their influenza vaccine to do so immediately. Make sure all children are immunized. PEDIATRIC IMMEDIATE CARE PROVIDES PRESERVATIVE-FREE FLU SHOTS AND NASAL SPRAY AT AT NO COST TO ALL UNDER 19 YEARS OF AGE.
and does not cause severe symptoms often associated with influenza illness. (In clinical studies, transmission of vaccine viruses to close contacts has occurred only rarely.) Side effects can include runny nose, wheezing, headache, low grade fever, muscle aches and vomiting. Q: What else can I do to prevent getting or spreading the flu? A: Here are some things you can do: • Get vaccinated! Ask your friends to get vaccinated. • Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue and then throw the tissue in the garbage. • Stay away from people who are sick. • Wash your hands often with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. • If someone in the house is sick, if possible, try to keep them in a separate area. • Keep surfaces like tables, sinks, counters and toys clean by
wiping them down with a household disinfectant (follow instructions on the label). Q: If I am concerned that vaccines cause autism, what is the harm of withholding vaccines? A: Autism is also common in countries where there are no vaccines. Your child may develop severe illness which is easily vaccine - preventable. I hope this helps you to better understand what the flu is, and how you can protect yourself and your family from getting this illness. I wish you health and happiness. If I can be of further assistance, please let me know. Urszula K Rakowska, MD, FAAP, MBA, CPE Assistant Professor of Pediatric Emergency Medicine 631.864.7337 or gp@pediatricimmediatecare.com
Get Vaccinated. Vaccination is the best protection against contracting the flu. Everyone 6 months of age and older should get vaccinated against the flu as soon as the 2012-2013 season vaccine is available in your area. If you do contract the flu, talk to your doctor about antivirals. Antiviral drugs are prescription medicines (pills, liquid or an inhaler) that can be used for prevention or treatment of flu viruses. If you get sick, antiviral drugs can make your illness milder and make you feel better faster. Flu Facts: • The flu is caused by a virus called influenza • Flu is a contagious illness that is spread in droplets made by people when they talk, sneeze or cough. These droplets can then infect another person when they inhale them. • Less commonly, a person might also get flu by touching an object that has the flu virus on it and then touching their own mouth, eyes or nose. • Once infected, you may pass the virus to others even about a day before you begin to have symptoms yourself. • Flu can cause a mild to severe illness and even death, especially in the very young or old, pregnant women or people with other medical illnesses (i.e.: asthma, diabetes) • The best way to prevent the flu is by getting a flu vaccine each year. Q: Who should get the flu vaccine? A: Beginning this year with the 2012-2013 influenza season, the CDC recommends that everyone 6 months and older should get a flu vaccine each year. The single best way to prevent the flu is to get a flu vaccine each year.
Q: What types of vaccinations are available? A: The two types of flu vaccines are: • The “flu shot”: an inactivated vaccine which contains killed virus that is given by injection. It is approved for use in people 6 months of age and older, including healthy people, people with chronic medical conditions and pregnant women. • The nasal spray flu vaccine: a vaccine made with live, but weakened, flu virus that cannot cause the flu in a healthy person. This is approved for use in healthy people 2-49 years old (not pregnant). Q: What are the Side Effects of the two vaccine types? A: Different side effects can be associated with the flu shot and nasal vaccine. The flu shot: You cannot get the flu from a flu shot. Some minor side effects that could occur are: soreness, redness, or swelling at the site of injection, low-grade fever, muscle aches. If they are going to occur at all, they begin soon after the vaccination and usually last 1 to 2 days. Almost all people who receive influenza vaccine have no problems from it. The nasal spray: The nasal-spray vaccine has weakened viruses

Noted Lecturer The large meeting room at the Suffolk Cooperative Library System (SLS) was full with school librarians from across the county who had questions about teaching the new standards. Guest speaker and author Dr. Marc Aronson, hosted by the Eastern Suffolk BOCES Library System (SLS), was there to discuss the implementation of the new Common Core State Standards. “The evolution of K-12 education is upon us,” he said, “and
school librarians are the foundation in creating a common core community.” The new education standards in English/ language arts and mathematics, adopted by 45 states including New York, will prepare students for life after 12th grade. These standards have taken Dr. Aronson down a path of guiding librarians to be, he said, “…in this new world that promotes culling and curating from every source to give young
people opportunities to be in the debate as new ideas come forward. How we change education, librarianship, print and digital books, apps, is important. We need to immerse young people not in receiving knowledge, but in the pursuit of knowledge,” he explained. “Thinking is endorphins for the brain.” His presentation was titled Common Core, Uncommon Challenge.
RINGING IN THE NEW YEAR - On December 31st, the residents of St. Catherine of Siena Nursing & Rehabilitation Care Center rang in the New Year with a celebration. The staff arranged for the residents to enjoy musical entertainment and dancing as well as noisemakers, tiaras and hats to welcome 2013. This was a great celebration for staff to share with the residents and families. This celebration is just one way in NOTED LECTURER - Dr. Aronson speaks with several school librarians as Gail which St. Catherine of Siena Nursing & Rehabilitation Care Center strives to give their Barraco (standing), the Eastern Suffolk BOCES SLS administrative coordinator, residents a fun filled day to keep their home a place to share with family and friends. listens.

The senior high school, in addition to Santapogue and South Bay elementary schools in the West Babylon Union Free School District, answered the call of the Sandy Hook PTA after the December 14th tragedy in Newtown, Conn. In an effort to ease some of the pain, the Sandy Hook PTA asked for schools nationwide to
make paper snowflakes so that they could create a “winter wonderland” for the students to see when they arrived back to school after the break. The West Babylon students worked diligently to create hundreds of snowflakes to line the school’s hallways. Kindergarten students of Forest Avenue Elementary
joined the effort and made “love bugs,” symmetrical painted pieces of art, to accompany the snowflakes. “It’s nice to think that the creative work of our students might put a smile on the faces of the jlynn@theneighbornewspapers.com www.facebook.com/instepwithjamie children from Sandy Hook,” remarked West Babylon Senior High School Principal Dr. Ellice not. It’s simple human nature. distance, shall we say. By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Vassallo. This is not to say we should The trick is to save these
WONDERLAND OF WELL WISHES - Students of the West Babylon Union Free School District created snowflakes for the students of Sandy Hook Elementary School.
Flipping The Switch
There comes a time when you just have to tune things out. That point when all the chaos surrounding you simply needs to be shut off and pushed aside. The moment when all the pointless discourse and frantic commotion dissolves into simple background noise. Peace and quiet…and clarity. We all strive for this. And often, we would not find it so difficult to achieve – if not for the distraction of others. Ah, but to live a solitary life devoid of all nuisance…what kind of existence would that be? And so we must learn to tolerate, to adjust, to find that happy medium between blatant rudeness and healthy…
be uninvolved in life; but sometimes, that fine line between being involved and being overtaken by nonsense is far too important to overlook. We should only become caught up in those things which are healthy and beneficial to us in the long run. Leave the rest behind. The problem is that, while, philosophically, this theory makes perfect sense, putting it into practice is far easier said than done when faced with reality. Anyone who deals with people on a daily basis, whether complete strangers or those near and dear, can surely attest to this fact. Love them or hate them, we are destined to clash with others more often than
so-called “battles” for the important issues. And while, in the heat of the moment, each and every issue may seem equally dire, rest assured, they are not. Take a step back, take a deep breath, and heed the following: “Frame every so-called disaster with these words: In five years, will this matter?” In most cases, the answer will be a clear and unequivocal “no.” So move on. Let it go. Forgive and forget. Don’t allow yourself to get hung up on the small stuff. In five years’ time, it won’t matter. Focus on today – and finding that elusive peace within yourself.

Hurricane Relief
Students from Babylon Elementary School have been generously donating leftover portions of their lunch money in support of Babylon families that were affected by Hurricane Sandy, and Principal Dana Basile announced that over $2,500 has been collected. The total, which Basile estimates at approximately $2,700, includes donations from elementary school staffers, an anonymous $1,000 donation from a Babylon family, and a generous donation from a school in Massachusetts. “We are extremely grateful that a Massachusetts
school stepped up with a monetary donation, along with books and clothing for children in need,” Basile said. “We also had Barnes and Noble donate over $1,000 worth of books to us to share with families, and $525 from our Barnes and Noble book fair event. We also had approximately $500 donated in the way of grocery store and Target gifts cards from families through the K-6 PTA.” Basile added that the school developed a reserve fund for donations specific to Hurricane Sandy. “In the months ahead, using the monies we collected,

A Valuable Lesson Suffolk County Police Department Officer George Lynagh paid a visit to Babylon Memorial Grade School this week to teach students an important anti-bullying lesson. Officer Lynagh, who works with the Suffolk County Police Department’s Community Outreach Bureau, wanted the students to remember that since there are many different types of bullying – including emotional, verbal and physical – it’s important to watch for the early signs of it. Lynagh’s lesson came at a crucial time, as student bullying is one of the most frequently reported discipline
problems in schools across the country. According to a recent report from the National Education Association, 21 percent of elementary schools, 43 percent of middle schools and 22 percent of high schools reported problems with bullying over the past decade. Due to Lynagh’s fantastic school outreach efforts, Babylon is bucking the national trend when it comes to bullying. “We teach from a police officer’s point of view, and we talk a lot about consequences, both of bullying and Internet use,” Lynagh said. “It’s a school resource officer program. It reaches from the
elementary school all the way up to the high school level.” Babylon Memorial Grade School Principal Randee Bonagura makes it a point to invite Lynagh back to the school each year, and she is extremely pleased with the difference his message brings. Thanks to Officer Lynagh, Babylon’s grade school students have learned it’s always better to be a buddy rather than a bully. Lynagh’s visits reinforce the schoolcommunity partnership as an extension of the district’s character education program.
On January 7th, a retirement ceremony was held to commemorate the career and accomplishments of West Babylon Public Library Director Anne Marie Dolan. The event also welcomed in Gail Pepa as the new Director. Anne Marie Dolan has
been working in libraries since high school, when she started as a page in the West Islip Public Library. She earned a masters degree in library science, and started working for the West Babylon Public Library in January of 1990. She led the library through a series of major
renovations, going from a 1,400 square foot building with borrowed books and used furniture to the 3,300 square foot modern facility we appreciate today. Anne Marie credits the growth of the West Babylon Public Library to fiscal responsibility, hard work, and extreme dedication.
