Back to Basics

By: Jamie Lynn Ryan The more I drive, the more I realize how many truly incompetent motorists there are out there. Let’s start with the basics. If you come out to find snow accumulated on the roof of your car, CLEAN IT OFF. Those of us who have the misfortune of driving behind you would greatly appreciate it. I know you think you’re saving time, but honestly, they make rear windows transparent for a reason…you know, just in case you want to take a quick peek back there every now and then. Once on the road, let’s review a few pointers… Shoulders of the road were made for the purpose of easing into and out of traffic while merging. Trust me, it’s a much better alternative than

practically standing on your brakes while in the right traffic lane as you suddenly realize your exit is approaching – oh, in 3 feet or so. Same goes for merging onto a major highway or parkway. Do not assume that the lane is clear for you to simply sail right through at 60 mph. There are occasionally, you know, other vehicles already inhabiting that space. Then there are those scenarios that are simply so bizarre, they are beyond words. A few weeks ago, I was stopped at a light on the Service Road of the LIE. As I waited in the left hand turning lane, a truck opposite me in the right hand lane, I noticed a car approach in the middle lane, “driven” by a man staring intently at the map spread across his steering wheel. Suddenly, he apparently

With a mix of horror and amusement, I watched the scene unfold. I glanced at the truck driver, to see him absolutely hysterical with laughter, shaking his head in amazement. The light turned green at that point, spurring me to get out of there before witnessing Act II of this particular play. No telling what the next move might have been! Let’s all focus people. And not on our maps, please. The road. Only the road. And for goodness sake, invest in a snowbrush.

Fifth-grade students of Tooker Avenue Elementary School in the West Babylon Union Free School District didn’t let the abundance of winter snow in February slow them down. In 2006, physical education instructor Michael Bellacosa wrote a mini-grant that resulted in the school obtaining 30 sets of snowshoes. The shoes are used, when weather permits, in support of lifetime activities, an important element of the physical education curriculum. After the latest storm, students hiked on school grounds, ran relay races and finished the lesson with a small touch football game. Arid A camel needs little water because it sweats very little, and keeps most of the water that is in it’s body.

By: Karen Ranieri, North Massapequa My babies are growing up What they used to love me doing Is just embarrassing now My little boy walks down the hall From a distance, all I see is his back Then suddenly, he turns to see if I’m still there And gives me a wave My heart melts ‘Cause his big sisters They don’t look back anymore She doesn’t look back I guess it’s okay It means she’s growing up In every sense of the way Sometimes those moments get lost Day to day But when my little guy looked back It reminded me of so many yesterdays I drop her off to her hourly job She tells me not to stop in front It’s too embarrassing Getting a lift from my mom She scurries in through the door She doesn’t look back anymore My baby is getting ready to dance Her tutu and make-up on I used to walk her backstage And she’d glance and I’d give her a wink You’re going to do great Don’t be scared Just look straight ahead Don’t look at the floor Now, she doesn’t look back anymore They say you have to let go Cut those apron strings

Additionally, the district utilizes anti-intruder alarms in each building, a visible staff identity protocol using name badges and an electronic mass notification system to communicate with parents and guardians. Several schools in the district have the ability to live monitor the video surveillance systems and to utilize an intercom system at the front door of the building. It was noted that the district’s Project SAVE (Safe Schools Against Violence in Education) materials are up to date and that lockdown, lockout and shelter-in drills are practiced in all buildings. Recommendations provided by Intralogic Solutions include the installation of panic buttons at each building as well as access control panels with swipe entry capabilities. Also suggested was the additional installation of exterior cameras in all buildings and interior cameras and intercoms in some district buildings. The district is actively reviewing means for implementing these recommendations. In addition, the Suffolk County Police Department has requested the use of district buildings for an “active shooter drill” to be held in March. The drill, led by specialists, including members of a SWAT team, will provide officers with an opportunity to learn how best to respond in the event of an emergency scenario while familiarizing themselves with the layout of district buildings involved. Recognizing that ensuring safety is an ongoing priority, the district continually reviews security and safety practices and makes improvements to its current systems as needed. As such, all seven schools within the district were recently assessed to determine the effectiveness of current security measures and what additional measures may need to be implemented in order to better ensure the safety and well being of students and staff. delivered on Valentine’s Day, with all of the proceeds donated to the American Heart Association. The studentraised funds were combined with the proceeds from Go Red Day, where staff members were allowed to dress down for work on February 8th. Between both fundraisers, RMMS donated more than $300 to the AHA.
