THE MOST COMMUNITY NEWS, PHOTOS AND EVENTS EACH AND EVERY WEEK!
n September 21st, the students and staff of the West Babylon Junior High School arrived to school donning white clothing and peace signs in a show of solidarity for the International Day of Peace, otherwise known as World Peace Day. This day, first recognized in 1981, is one that celebrates peace, specifically, the absence of war. Many teachers took this opportunity to explore the history with their classes and used writing assignments to reinforce the message of peace.

The Grief and Loss Support Groups will start this Saturday, September 29th and meet weekly from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in LICADD’s Mineola (114 Old Country Road, Suite 114) and Ronkonkoma (2805 Veterans Memorial Highway, Suite 26) offices. Featuring Poetry And Photos Submitted By Our Readers!
By: Jade Nussbaum, Seaford
I feel as if my mind is lost I’m in a room all alone I feel that no one is here with me Just the wall and the sky above I want to sing a soft-spoken song But there is no one to sing along I hear a beat inside of me And a tune inside my head But with nothing around I’m a loner To myself I keep the tune But no one ever heard the song Just my mind that is now gone

When we cast amidst the waters Of the many people we meet Some blend into the sea of blue Obscure to the vision Still others glisten On the crest of the wave Visible from the shore line Where one waits For the tide to come in

Crafty Comments By: Toni Cook Sorting beads, buttons ‘n bows to glue Just ain’t what I prefer to do Quilting, crocheting ‘n perling too Really put me in quite a stew My nimbleless fingers do not respond To needles, thimbles, or knitting of yarn Just hand me a pen with subject to ponder I’ll dash off a poem of which I’m much fonder

A bit of Germany complete with rides, games, live entertainment, food and fun - all of these await those attending the Lindenhurst Oktoberfest, being held in the Village of Lindenhurst beginning Friday, October 5th through Sunday, October 7th. On Friday and Saturday, rides, games and food will kick-off at the Oktoberfest at the Midway, located west of North Wellwood Avenue at the intersection of West Hoffman Avenue and School Street. Operation hours are from 5 to 9 p.m. on Friday, and from 12 noon to 9 p.m. on Saturday. Saturday afternoon from 2 to 5 p.m. is “Kids Day,” where all rides will cost only $2 each. From 12 noon until 5 p.m. on Sunday, October 7th, there will be continuous live entertainment at the Village Square in addition to the activities at the Midway. Perhaps you would prefer a traditional German Beer Garden atmosphere and
entertainment from the Edelweiss Orchestra... A tour of the street fair, lined with arts/crafts, food and merchandise vendors might be more to your liking... Either way, you are certain to enjoy the festivities of Lindenhurst Oktoberfest!
Come join us! The Lindenhurst Rotary Club, in cooperation with the Village of Lindenhurst, is sponsoring the event. There is still space for vendors. For further information, contact Doug at 631.957.7500.

The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) held its 32nd Annual R. Brinkley Smithers Golf Invitational yesterday and brought in $360,000 to support its life-saving substance abuse prevention programs and comprehensive addiction services. More than 175 golfers teed-off at The Creek and Piping Rock Clubs in Locust Valley and 200 dinner guests gathered in support of LICADD. Father Philip K. Eichner, SM, President of Kellenberg Memorial High School, led the invocation that began the Diamonds in the Rough Reception and Dinner at The Creek. He spoke of the critical needs of youth and families on Long Island and the services that LICADD offers to address the growing crisis of abuse, addiction and drug-related fatalities in our communities. LICADD Board Chair Jeffery Capazzi explained the appeal of the R. Brinkley Smithers Golf Invitational, “it is wonderful to be involved in organizing this event, especially when the need for proven drug and alcohol support is so evident and continues to escalate each year.” Former Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi, who served as event emcee and auctioneer, helped to energize the crowd throughout the award ceremony and live auction. This year’s t o u r n a m e n t posthumously honored past Board Chair Michael Schaffield. Michael’s wife Dee Downing Schaffield, and his son, Brian Schaffield, accepted the 2012 Humanitarian Award on behalf of Michael, whose leadership and dedication to LICADD supported the organization to meet its mission.
“The support of our event chairs, Michael Brennan and Jeffery Capazzi, and the generosity of our donors and volunteers at this event means so much to us, as the proceeds of the tournament will directly fund programs that provide hope and healing to at-risk individuals and the families that support them,” explained Executive Director Dr. Jeffrey Reynolds. “It is because of their efforts that LICADD remains the go-to agency in the midst of this public health epidemic and continues to develop effective and innovative programs to combat addiction.” Do you know someone who may be at risk for alcohol and drug abuse? To speak with someone today about the support LICADD can provide, please call 516.747.2606 (Nassau County), 631.979.1700 (Suffolk
County). With offices in Mineola, Ronkonkoma and Riverhead, LICADD is working aggressively to help the community overcome the challenges presented by prevailing social stigma of alcoholism and drug
dependence by providing a comprehensive array of prevention, support and recovery programs. For more information on LICADD and its evidence-based programs, please visit www.licadd.org.

Speaking Of Siri By: Jamie Lynn Ryan A few weeks ago, my friend and I got the bright inspiration to walk all the way to Kismet from the Fire Island Lighthouse. I had been told it wasn’t an extremely long journey, and, timed just right in the early fall, would be quite lovely and scenic. Well, it was certainly scenic. Considering that there is basically one route from the Lighthouse leading into the Fire Island communities, one would think there would be no need for directions. But, just for kicks, I decided to put the address of the restaurant we planned to go to – Surf’s Out – into my phone and ask the famous Siri for directions. Immediately, my trusty little map dropped a pin at our current location, as well as another quite some distance away. At first glance, it seemed rather far, but we paid no mind. We just started walking. Pretty soon, we saw the sign telling us we were entering Kismet Village. Okay, we were on the right track. My friend thought she remem-
bered that there was a particular cross street we would need to make a left turn on, in order to head north to the Bay side of the Island, where the restaurants were located. Not quite certain which road it was, we figured surely there would be a sign. Oh, there was a sign all right! The next marker we came across welcomed us to the Village of Saltaire – in other words, we were now exiting Kismet. Hmmm… interesting. And yet there remained the little glowing dot on my phone, still way off in the distance. Something was very wrong. As I zoomed in further, I started to faintly make out the words “Ocean Beach” stamped on the map. Ocean Beach?! As in that town I had not too long ago take a ferry to?! I didn’t even know you could walk there if you wanted to! And who in their right mind would want to? Uh-oh, we were seriously off track. At that point, short of knocking on a local resident’s door – many of whom had already packed it in for the season – the only other
passers-by consisted of bicyclists zooming by – and deer…lots of deer, galloping across the street, darting from one yard to the other presumably in search of something to munch on. Ah, but then, out of the blue came an older couple, clearly local residents out for a leisurely afternoon stroll. “Excuse me, but can you tell us if there is a restaurant near here?” my friend inquired. “Oh yes,” the man said. Oh good, I thought. “But not here…” Uhoh. “It’s way back in Kismet,” he gestured in the direction from which we had just come. Oh boy. “How far, exactly?” “Oh, it’s a good hike,” his wife said apologetically. We politely thanked them and began the long process of retracing our steps, finally arriving at our intended destination – approximately 3.5 miles and 1 hour and 20 minutes after departing. All for the experience of walking to Kismet. It was an experience all right. Suffice it to say, Siri will not be invited on our next journey.

Local Resident Stars In Play school senior class’s “Cutest Couple” – meeting for the first time since graduation at their 20year class reunion. Over the course of the evening, the former sweethearts confront their past, present and future, while Hackert keeps busy playing the part of nearly twenty of their classmates (including five women!).The play marks Hacker’s debut with Bare Bones Theater. Prior to appearing on the Bare Bones stage, Hackert took classes with director Jeff Bennett, so he was eager to be a part of one of the company’s productions. Hackert adds, “Working with Jeff Bennett has been fantastic. By taking Jeff’s Fundamentals of Acting class, I sort of knew what to expect and applied some of those techniques and methods to this part. Jeff is passionate about producing quality theater and crafting believable characters. You get to come away with a new ‘tool’ for your acting toolbox after finishing each rehearsal. Lee Meyer, who is co directing, brings yet another experienced prospective and is great at analyzing the characters to uncover their true motivations.”

North Babylon resident Christopher Hackert stars as the Narrator – enacting nearly 20 roles – in The Bare Bones Repertory Company’s production of The Pavilion. The 2001 Pulitzer Prize-nominated play by Craig Wright runs for six performances, October 11th, 12th, 13th and 18th, 19th, 20th at 8 p.m., at 57 Main Street in Northport. The production is directed by Jeff Bennett and Lee Meyer. Seats $20 and available at www.barebonestheater.co m. Mr. Hackert is no stranger when it comes to the Long Island theatrical scene. Beginning as a contributing playwright with Middle Class American Productions, the North Babylon resident and East Meadow native’s work has been
featured in MCAP’s American Dating Catastrophes one-act play festival, and as part of the Northport One Act Play Festival. Hackert is also an accomplished actor and director - appearing in plays produced by the South Shore Theatre experience and in scenes as part of his work as head writer, director and actor with the See Saw Comedy Repertory Company. The Pavilion, however, is a role that Hackert sees as his most challenging, given the number of roles he plays during the Craig Wright play. “Playing multiple characters and keeping them all straight in my mind is incredibly challenging,” he explained. “When I read the description of the part of The Narrator, it seemed like a part that I could bring some of my improvisational skills to in order to bring the characters to life. The dialogue can jump from ‘philosophical and poetic’ one second to ‘crazy and out of control’ the next, without a beat in between.” The Pavilion also stars Johnny Greenlaw and Jennifer Dorcic. The story is centered on Peter and Kari - voted their high

Golden Girl On September 22nd, Deanna Rohrbacher earned the Girl Scout Gold Award, joining the ranks of generations of young women who have made a difference both locally and globally. The Gold Award represents the highest achievement in Girl Scouts and therefore is a significant individual achievement.
For her service project, Deanna aimed to educate the students of West Babylon Junior High School about birds indigenous to the region. She installed two bird feeders and two bird houses to attract birds for purposes of observation. Then she designed two murals with the likeness and descriptions of 23
birds commonly seen in Long Island. With the help of a couple friends she meticulously hand painted each of the birds. She also designed and constructed a podium that houses a booklet full of fun facts about each of these 23 birds.

Showing Their Support The West Babylon Senior High School girls soccer teams came together in an act of generosity and kindness and showed their support for a fellow soccer player. A student-athlete on the Kings Park girls team, Lauren Lenardi, was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer two years ago and is no longer capable of playing soccer or attending school. Due to her illness and
treatment she was unable to have a Sweet 16 party. The Kings Park soccer program made the decision to dedicate the game against West Babylon to Lauren, as the game was being held on her birthday. When the West Babylon varsity and junior varsity teams were made aware of the plan, they agreed to each make a small donation to the Love for Lauren organization,
which is aimed at alleviating some of the financial strain of Lauren’s treatment. The West Babylon girls raised $655. The donation was presented to Lauren during a halftime birthday celebration that included cake and a soccer-themed birthday card designed by West Babylon art teacher James Fulton and signed by every member of the JV and varsity teams.

Dear Readers,

I love October! It’s the month that kicks off the holiday season with wonderful charity events from my favorite rescue organizations. Long Island Golden Retriever Rescue has planned a great evening. Money 2. that’s raised from ticket sales will go to the life saving efforts of this worthy organization. Can you think of a better way to spend your money on a night Golden Retriever Rescue: out? Here are the details. 516.578.3803 The Long Island Golden Retriever Rescue Inc. will host its Shop & Dine & MAGGIE female Golden Laugh Fundraiser on Thursday, October 18th, at the Holbrook Country Club, JAMIE 700 Patchogue-Holbrook Road in Holbrook, from 6 to 9 p.m. There will be a femaile Golden Retriever buffet dinner, cake, coffee and soda, as well as a cash bar. You will have the opportunity to purchase Pawhaus Jewels, purses, Tastefully Simple products, unique holiday gifts, teas, Avon and more. There will also be psychic readings, a caricaturist, a dog slide show, a Chinese Auction, and comedian Moody McCarthy is scheduled to perform. The cost is $50 per person by October 4th (payable to LIGRR). 3. The psychic was a big hit last year! She was booked through the entire evening. Be sure to sign up early for your spot. The caricaturist was also busy throughout the evening. Some people sat for their pictures, while others brought dog and family pictures for the caricaturist to draw so they could give them as holiday gifts. The cost is $15 – one person or dog, $25 – 2 people or dogs, $10 – each additional person or dog. 4. Your $50 ticket includes a buffet dinner and supports Golden Rescue. Please Little Shelter: mail your tax deductible check to LIGRR, P.O. Box 566, Plainview, NY 11803, 631.368.8770 by October 4th. Include $30 additional if you would like a psychic reading. An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay.
The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad cholesterol
coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to be potent
(LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the risk of
weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be especially important for women, given that heart
disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.
