The inaugural cohort of SJB’s scientific research program, known as GENESIS, welcomed a guest speaker earlier this school year. In December, students in the GENESIS program were offered an opportunity to gain perspective on the process of conducting Doctoral level research during a roundtable discussion with Kara Hanson Micucci, a Doctoral candidate in the field of psychology at Fordham University. Mrs. Micucci is currently studying the impact of a Catholic school setting on student self-efficacy. The SJB GENESIS students were able to draw on the lessons they have learned through the program to ask questions about topics such as dependent and independent variables, internal review boards and the process of selecting topics to research.

If you’re a senior living in the Town of Oyster Bay, and you’ve been thinking about adopting a pet, Oyster Bay Town Councilman Chis J. Coschignano reminds you that the Town has a program called “Seniors for Seniors,” under which seniors can adopt a pet from the Town Shelter with no adoption fee. “When people consider adopting pets, oftentimes they want a puppy or a kitten,” Councilman Coschignano stated. “Although cute and ‘moldable,’ they can be a handful, especially young dogs with such traits as chewing, barking and jumping. Besides, adult animals can be every bit as cute and playful as their younger counterparts. “Generally speaking, senior canines and felines come already trained and ready for another chance at a good life,” Councilman Coschignano continued. “Also, adult pets usually require far less supervision and less constant care than high-energy kittens and puppies, making them great choices for older people. Another consideration for those with grandchildren is that puppies and kittens sometimes exhibit playful

The Town of Oyster Bay’s Cultural and Performing Arts (CAPA) Division of the Department of Community and Youth Services is pleased to announce that exciting new workshops will be offered for the Spring 2013 season, and registration is now open through March 1st, 2013. A variety of courses will be offered at the Marjorie R. Post Community Center in Massapequa, the North Massapequa Community Center, SyossetWoodbury Community Center, as well as the William P. Bennett Hicksville Community Center, according to Town Councilwoman Rebecca M. Alesia. “The Town is pleased to once again offer workshops through its Cultural and Performing Arts Division,” Councilwoman Alesia said. “This spring, this program features many

new workshops in a wide variety of categories, such as arts, education, entertainment, fitness, music and more. Additionally, while separate workshops are held for both children and adults, the Town will once again be offering special ‘Children and Caregiver’ workshops so that they can be enjoyed together.” Some highlights of the workshops scheduled to be offered for Spring 2013 include zumba fitness, total body sculpt, golf fitness, kickboxing fitness, the art of fen shui, dahn yoga, as well as numerous crafts and art courses. As for the workshops being offered for children, courses include piano lessons (ages 8-11,) project fashionista for budding designers (ages 10-15,) magic 101 (ages 8-12,) mad science (grades K-6,) and so much more. “These workshops

represent an opportunity for residents, both young and old, to hone a new skill, while simultaneously having fun,” Councilwoman Alesia said. “I invite all our residents to take advantage of these great workshops that the CAPA program will be offering. St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School student Aliyah Rolack was acknowledged at the 2013 Urban League of Long Island Young Professional’s Martin Luther King Jr. Spirit Awards Ceremony. Aliyah Rolack, a Senior at SJB and a Massapequa resident, was awarded the inaugural Rising Star Award. This award recognized her service to and accomplishments with

the Urban League and their mission of Empowering Communities, Changing Lives. Aliyah was honored with this award because of her volunteer work and leadership in the Summer Youth Employment and Training Program. This past Summer Aliyah directed the program, which works with Long Island youth to make them ready to enter the workforce. The program educates its participants with activities such as mock interviews, resume building classes and business plan assessment. Aliyah’s leadership and dedication to these endeavors supplements her accomplishments at St. John the Baptist, where she is actively involved in many organizations and is an honor roll student. SeniorNet Classes Town of Oyster Bay seniors are invited to take part in computer classes to be held at the William P. Bennett Hicksville Community Center, located at 28 West Carl Street in Hicksville, announced Town Councilwoman Beth Faughnan. The classes are held by the Education and Assistance Corp (EAC) Inc. to seniors 60 years of age and older through its SeniorNet program and begin on Tuesday, February 19th. “The Town is pleased to continue our partnership with EAC and offer these classes to seniors,” Councilwoman Faughnan said. “The classes are wide ranging, and no prior experience with computers is necessary, just a desire to broaden your computer education.” Councilwoman

Faughnan noted that classes are taught by volunteer instructors and coaches, who strive to make learning fun to help seniors adjust to the ever changing world of technology.
