The 2012-2013 School Tax levy bill printing will commence on October 1st, and mailing will start in early October. Receiver Stefanich asks property owners to be patient when calling the Tax Office for information on property taxes due to the usual high volume of calls received at the beginning of a new tax collection. Residents are requested to have the school district, section, block and lot numbers of the property in question available. This information is listed on the tax bill and on the property deed.

Dear Readers,

jlynn@theneighbornewspapers.com By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I was never an Apple person. I learned on a PC, I used them throughout my high school and college days, and I couldn’t fathom – or didn’t want to, more accurately – ever learning to use a Mac, let alone liking it. Well, all that changed once I became introduced to the Apple world at my first office job. Now, not only do I prefer it, but I don’t even remember how to work my way around a PC. Everything seems so much easier and userfriendly that I can’t recall why, exactly, I was ever so opposed to broadening my horizons. Now, I’m not fully indoctrinated mind you. I own an iMac, a couple of iPods and – finally, after years of carrying around an outdated, semi-obsolete “flip” phone – an iPhone 4S (iPad to follow at some point in the near future I’m sure). I have never camped out for a product, I don’t upgrade every time a new one comes out and I’m sure there are many who are far more educated when it

The Siri Factor comes to using them. But still, I love Apple, especially my iPhone. To be fair, given my prior cell phone experience, just about anything short of a tin can with a string would seem like an amazing upgrade. But this truly is. And my favorite part of it all? Why, that would be Siri. Siri, the “Intelligent Assistant” who comes pre-installed on the iPhone 4S and 5 models… Siri, who, for all his/her (“I was not assigned a gender,” it replies when questioned) quirks and occasional glitches, has quite the personality. Obviously, it was designed to be utilized in such a way as to make life easier by creating reminders, providing directions, weather updates and more. Not that I have used it for this purpose too often. No, I prefer to antagonize my poor little personal assistant with bizarre, out-ofleft field queries – just to see what responses I might get. I remember shortly after purchasing my iPhone when I decided to experiment with the Q&A possi-
bilities. Most were met with “I’m sorry. I don’t understand. Did you mean…” or some variation of that. Exasperated, I finally exclaimed at one point, “Why are you so dumb?!” Without missing a beat, Siri replied, “Why do you hate me? You don’t even know me!” Hysterical laughter. Seriously? This thing was obviously so much smarter than it let on. Fast forward to just a little over a month ago, after Siri and I had more of an opportunity to become acquainted, and I asked, “Siri, did you know today is my birthday?” He/she/it responded, “I’m so sorry Jamie, I didn’t know. I didn’t get you anything.” Apparently, we were now friends. With the launch of the new iPhone and software update, Siri is now being marketed as “new and improved” and able to overcome many of the previous glitches that had previously marred its novelty. Just imagine all the fun conversations to be had now! Most definitely an Apple person now. No going back.
This is three year-old Dharma. She is one of the rescued dogs I wrote about last week, and her story breaks my heart. Dharma’s ear has been badly ripped (healing now), her face is scarred and bares witness to the unspeakably cruel life she has led. Apparently, she was used as bait to train the fighting dogs. Perhaps she was chosen because she is petite (only 36 lbs), demure and sweet. Despite the unthinkable cruelty that she has suffered at the hands of man, she loves people. She is truly a special soul and deserves to be in a loving home with people who will cherish her and return the love she is so anxious to give. To quote Brookhaven Animal Shelter director Dori Scofield, “She forgives the humans who mistreated her. After all, dogs are most forgiving creatures. They put us humans to shame.” Dharma is all gentleness and loves to give kisses. You can see the sweetness of her soul shinning in her bright eyes. Unfortunately, Dharma has been bitten and attacked by the fighting dogs in training so many times that she must be the only dog in the household. Readers, can you give Dharma the opportunity to live the kind of life that she deserves to have? Her suffering has touched me deeply. Please call the Brookhaven Animal Shelter at 631.286.4940 and consider opening your hearts and home to this gentle loving girl. I would love to hear from the special person who adopts Dharma. Please visit a shelter and adopt. Remember, Your Best Friend Is Waiting...

Post Community Park, Merrick and Unqua Roads, Massapequa. It is a great event for car owners and car admirers, with free admission, breakfast provided by Sun Auto Group and lunch provided by the Town. Councilman Muscarella noted that this is a nontrophy meet. All vehicles must have valid registration and plates and must be driven by the owner. The event features vintage automobiles dating back to 1927 and is supported by All Car Club in Oyster Bay. “The Town’s All Car Friendship Meet is always a great family day at Marjorie R Post Community Park,” Councilman Muscarella said. “I invite all car owners and car enthusiasts to come to the park. LARGE REGULAR PIE
LONG ISLAND – A new report has just been released which reveals 7 costly mistakes that most homeowners make when selling their home, and a 9 Step System that can help you sell your home fast and for the most amount of money. This industry report shows clearly how the traditional ways of selling homes have become increasingly less and less effective in today’s market. The fact of the matter is that fully three quarters of homesellers don’t get what they want for their home and become disillusioned and - worse - financially disadvantaged when they put their home on the market.

In ignorance our acts do sometimes undo what love and caring took long to accrue We learn from no teacher or books from any shelf to think, act or feel like another, just ourselves It is for this reason misunderstandings will arise that influence our judgment and cloud up our eyes When we stare into a mirror and look upon our face we should examine it deeply like a telescope through space

We view the faults of others so easily some days that we fail to see ourselves in the shortcomings of their ways With the knowledge of how our thoughts create actions, we are enlightened our lives become simplified our love becomes heightened We are spirits here to grow in loving wisdom from our birth and God gave us each other to ease this passage through earth

attendance. At 3 p.m., the Long Island Bombers, a blind softball team that utilizes a ball that beeps and bases that buzz, will compete. “It is quite impressive to see the Bombers in action,” Friese said. “They are a dedicated group of baseball enthusiasts from the Long Island and tristate area. They just happen to be blind and visually impaired. They
hold rigorous practices, instructional clinics and play exhibition and competitive games against sighted and other visually impaired teams in the metropolitan area.” Supervisor Venditto indicated that the Town’s long history of supporting Challenger Baseball was a strong factor in being selected to host the 2012 Long Island Challenger Baseball Jamboree.
“There’s no question of our commitment to youngsters with special needs,” Supervisor Venditto said. “We’re proud to host the Jamboree, but more importantly, we are proud of the youngsters who will participate. They’re ability to overcome obstacles in the pursuit of their dreams is an inspiration to us all.”

In addition, the field has wider gate openings to accommodate wheelchairs, cement pads to facilitate access onto the field and nearby restroom access. The league enables boys and girls with physical and mental challenges, ages 418, or up to age 22 if still enrolled in high school, to enjoy the game of baseball along with the millions of other children who participate in this sport worldwide. Today, more than 30,000 children participate in more than 900 Challenger Divisions worldwide. Teams are set up according to abilities, rather than age, and can include as many as 15-20 players. Challenger games can be played as tee ball games, coach pitch, player pitch, or a combination of the three. According to Al Friese, Commissioner of the Massapequa Coast Little League's Challenger Division, "Buddies" are utilized for the benefit of Challenger players. “The buddies assist the Challenger players on the field, but whenever possible, encourage the players to bat and make plays themselves,” Friese said. “However, the buddy is always nearby to help when needed. Parents and teenagers are frequently asked to be ‘buddies’ and find the experience to be uniquely-rewarding.” After completing a Little League volunteer application and passing a required national background check, teenagers may become buddies, while parents

The Town of Oyster Bay will host the 2012 Long Island Challenger Baseball Jamboree at its Challenger Baseball Field located at John J. Burns Town Park in Massapequa on Saturday, October 7th, according to Town Supervisor John Venditto. The widely acclaimed event will be a full day of fun for all in attendance, beginning at 9:30 a.m. with registration and concluding at 4 p.m. with a closing ceremony. “We consider it quite an honor to host this prestigious event at our beautiful Challenger Field,” Supervisor Venditto said. “In addition to providing an awesome experience for the players and their families, the event also builds awareness to advancing Challenger Baseball.” Supervisor Venditto noted that Challenger Baseball League participants, some of whom have cerebral palsy, autism or are wheelchair bound, are able to focus upon their abilities rather than their limitations. “Once they put the league uniform on, they’re all ball players,” Supervisor Venditto said. “It’s a beautiful thing for both the youngsters and their parents.” Challenger Baseball is a Little League-sanctioned program established in 1989 that gives physically and mentally challenged children the opportunity to play baseball in an environment structured to their abilities. The Town created a dedicated field to meet the special needs of the players with such features as synthetic FieldTurf, which offers a stable, uniform and shock-absorbing playing surface. Division 5 is comprised of a truly remarkable group of people,” Councilman Macagnone said. “What spectators often don’t realize is that many of these players have undergone some sort of life-altering medical procedure, whether it be a joint-replacement or cardiac procedure, at some point in their lifetime.” For those interested in obtaining more information about LISSA, and especially for those looking to register and participate in future games for the league, contact Joe Friedman, Commissioner of LISSA, at 516.766.0883 or through email at joefriedman36@yahoo.com. Participation in the Long Island Senior Softball Association is open to those 68 years or older. “I hope to see our community out at this game, to support these amazing individuals,” Councilman Macagnone said. “The members of this organization truly are a testament to the age old adage that ‘you are only as old as you feel.’”

On Wednesday, October 3rd, Plainedge Middle School will present “Rachel’s Challenge” to the entire school population and will hold a special showing of the program for the community in the middle school auditorium at 6:30 p.m. The event will recount the story of Rachel Joy Scott – her life, her death in the Columbine High School shooting, and her
challenge to deliberately reach out to others with kindness. The evening showing will allow parents and community members to experience the impact that the program has had on students. Its goal is to motivate individuals personally, as well as prompt them to reflect on their relationship with and impact on their children and the people around them.
This community event also encourages the participants to start their own chain reactions of kindness and compassion, and teaches them ways in which they can support their children and the school in their efforts to promote kindness and respect. Please join the Plainedge Middle School for this event on Wednesday, October 3rd.
STARTING THE SEASON - The Massapequa Coast Little League started the season on Saturday, September 8th. The team is managed by Coach Andy Fascano, Assistant Coach Rob and Assistant Coach Frank. Fascano’s team won the first game 9-0. What a way to start off the season!
