may attack anywhere along the digestive track, while ulcerative colitis inflames only the large intestine (colon). Symptoms may include abdominal pain, persistent diarrhea, rectal bleeding, fever, weight loss and fatigue. Many patients require hospitalization and surgery. Most people develop the diseases between the ages of 15 and 35; however the incidence is increasing in young people. Take Steps is the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America’s national walk program to raise money for critical research and awareness about these painful and unpredictable digestive diseases. Thousands of people will gather this spring and fall at 158 walk sites across the country to join the fight

Guitarist Sylwia Kloc has been an active performer and teacher for 12 years. A graduate with honors from the prestigious Mannes Conservatory of Music, where she earned her Bachelors and Master Degree, Mrs. Kloc has recently moved to Massapequa from Brooklyn, NY. A founding member of the South Shore Music Conservatory, Mrs. Kloc also teaches popular music, Ukulele (Hawaiian Guitar), and Lute. She accepts students as young as 6 years old. Mrs. Kloc serves as an adjunct professor of classical guitar at Montclair State University, NJ. Her students have been recognized at NYSSMA Festivals, and at concerts in the New York Metro area. For more information contact Sylwia Kloc (917) 292-3149 or email: sylwiakloc@yahoo.com Violinists Mr. and Mrs. Alberghini have played the violin since the age of 4 and 7 respectively. They have participated in prestigious festivals in the United States, Latin America, and Europe. They are graduates of the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College, and Mrs. Alberghini holds a Master Degree in Music Education from the Steindhart School of Education at New York University. As founding members of the (SSMC), they bring to Massapequa 10+ years of experience teaching the violin to kids of age 6 and above with recognitions at NYSSMA. Group lessons are available for kids 4-5. Mr. and Mrs. Alberghini recently moved to Massapequa from Queens, NY, and they are looking forward to sharing and passing on the great gifts of Music. After the proper foundation, kids will have a chance to learn different styles of music other than classical, like Irish Fiddling, Gypsy, Bluegrass, etc.!!!! Our Philosophy We believe in giving every student the ability to learn at their own pace, in a noncompetitive environment, where the skills of learning how to play a musical instrument will enhance their life. Numerous studies suggest that the benefits of music education can increase a child’s potential to perform better in Math, Reading and Science. We believe that music education is part of a solid foundation in a child’s development, by teaching about discipline, attention, and team work, all skills necessary to succeed in school, sports, college, the job market, and as a member of a vibrant community.

Take Steps provides the perfect environment for patients and their families to come together and know they are not alone in this fight. The afternoon is filled with music, food, kids’ activities, local entertainment and most importantly the company of hundreds of people who truly understand the impacts of IBD. I feel as if my mind is lost I’m in a room all alone I feel that no one is here with me Just the wall and the sky above I want to sing a soft-spoken song But there is no one to sing along I hear a beat inside of me And a tune inside my head But with nothing around I’m a loner To myself I keep the tune But no one ever heard the song Just my mind that is now gone

A few weeks ago, my friend and I got the bright inspiration to walk all the way to Kismet from the Fire Island Lighthouse. I had been told it wasn’t an extremely long journey, and, timed just right in the early fall, would be quite lovely and scenic. Well, it was certainly scenic. Considering that there is basically one route from the Lighthouse leading into the Fire Island communities, one would think there would be no need for directions. But, just for kicks, I decided to put the address of the restaurant we planned to go to – Surf’s Out – into my phone and ask the famous Siri for directions. Immediately, my trusty little map dropped a pin at our current location, as well as another quite some distance away. At first glance, it seemed rather far, but we paid no mind. We just started walking. Pretty soon, we saw the sign telling us we were entering Kismet Village. Okay, we were on the right track. My friend thought she remem-
bered that there was a particular cross street we would need to make a left turn on, in order to head north to the Bay side of the Island, where the restaurants were located. Not quite certain which road it was, we figured surely there would be a sign. Oh, there was a sign all right! The next marker we came across welcomed us to the Village of Saltaire – in other words, we were now exiting Kismet. Hmmm… interesting. And yet there remained the little glowing dot on my phone, still way off in the distance. Something was very wrong. As I zoomed in further, I started to faintly make out the words “Ocean Beach” stamped on the map. Ocean Beach?! As in that town I had not too long ago take a ferry to?! I didn’t even know you could walk there if you wanted to! And who in their right mind would want to? Uh-oh, we were seriously off track. At that point, short of knocking on a local resident’s door – many of whom had already packed it in for the season – the only other
passers-by consisted of bicyclists zooming by – and deer…lots of deer, galloping across the street, darting from one yard to the other presumably in search of something to munch on. Ah, but then, out of the blue came an older couple, clearly local residents out for a leisurely afternoon stroll. “Excuse me, but can you tell us if there is a restaurant near here?” my friend inquired. “Oh yes,” the man said. Oh good, I thought. “But not here…” Uhoh. “It’s way back in Kismet,” he gestured in the direction from which we had just come. Oh boy. “How far, exactly?” “Oh, it’s a good hike,” his wife said apologetically. We politely thanked them and began the long process of retracing our steps, finally arriving at our intended destination – approximately 3.5 miles and 1 hour and 20 minutes after departing. All for the experience of walking to Kismet. It was an experience all right. Suffice it to say, Siri will not be invited on our next journey.

If you were faced with the responsibility for designing and building a home, would you consult a builder? Before piloting a plane, would you want to take flying lessons? Would you seek medical training before attempting heart surgery? If the answers seem obvious to you, consider this: Should your skills as a parent be learned only through “trial and error”? All the love we have for our children does not automatically make us effective parents. Parenting, like any other skill, is something we learn, and learning “on the job” can be frustrating. As parents we become confused when, after constant repetition of the same theme, children still do not respond. “Active Parenting” is perhaps the most effective program ever offered in the “how to” of raising children. YES Community Counseling Center will be conducting an Active Parenting program for parents with elementary school age children at our office located at 75 Grand Avenue, Massapequa beginning Wednesday October 17th, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. for six weeks. The cost of the program is $60. If you are interested in attending please contact Kathleen Coletta at YES Community Counseling Center at 516.799.3203. Registration is on a first come, first serve basis.

Top District
Reinforcing its distinction as a “Best Communities for Music Education” three years in a row, Massapequa School District hit another high note as one of 11 districts in the state — and one of four in Nassau County — with 10 or more students selected to perform in the New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) Winter Conference All-State Honors Ensembles. Six more students were chosen as alternates for the annual conference set to take place in Rochester, November 29th through December 2nd. “We are thrilled that the hard work and dedication of our students and staff has resulted in the opportunity for our talented young musicians to perform on this level,” said Dr. David Gaines, Massapequa School District’s curriculum associate for music, K-12. The students, their instrument or voice type,
and the ensemble they will perform with are: Kelly Daley, violin, symphony orchestra; Julia DeGasperis, alto, women's chorus; Timothy Diovanni, clarinet, wind ensemble; Nolan Fitzpatrick, jazz alto sax, instrumental jazz; Jonathan Grant, clarinet, symphonic band; Bailey Hawthorne, soprano, women’s chorus; Marigrace Maley, soprano, women’s chorus; Thomas Morse, tuba, symphonic band; Amanda Painton, alto, women's chorus; and Catherine Vedilago, french horn, wind ensemble. Alternates include: Adam Davi, baritone sax; Erin Kohler, viola; Rachel Meaney, soprano; Ryan Schulte, oboe; Emily Smith, soprano; and Carl Surrow, bass. The NYSSMA All-State process begins with a music educator, a student and an accompanist spending countless hours preparing for a NYSSMA
Level VI solo. More than 6,500 students auditioned for this honor and about 885 were selected. An additional 550 students were selected as alternates.

I love October! It’s the month that kicks off the holiday season with wonderful charity events from my favorite rescue organizations. Long Island Golden Retriever Rescue has planned a great evening. Money 2. that’s raised from ticket sales will go to the life saving efforts of this worthy organization. Can you think of a better way to spend your money on a night Golden Retriever Rescue: out? Here are the details. 516.578.3803 The Long Island Golden Retriever Rescue Inc. will host its Shop & Dine & MAGGIE female Golden Laugh Fundraiser on Thursday, October 18th, at the Holbrook Country Club, JAMIE 700 Patchogue-Holbrook Road in Holbrook, from 6 to 9 p.m. There will be a femaile Golden Retriever buffet dinner, cake, coffee and soda, as well as a cash bar. You will have the opportunity to purchase Pawhaus Jewels, purses, Tastefully Simple products, unique holiday gifts, teas, Avon and more. There will also be psychic readings, a caricaturist, a dog slide show, a Chinese Auction, and comedian Moody McCarthy is scheduled to perform. Musical Standouts
Junior musician Marisa Tyd will be representing Plainedge School District’s music department at this year’s New York State School Music Association’s AllState Music Festival. The festival, which will be held in Rochester at the end of November, will feature high school
student-musicians from throughout New York State. Marisa was chosen as a top string musician (bass) based upon her AllState auditions. In addition to Marisa, fellow musician John Coacci achieved “alternate” status for orchestra. This puts him on a waiting list for
participation in the conference, with a final decision on his status being made by the organization at the end of October. Congratulations to both musicians on this e x c e l l e n t accomplishment.
Sharing Family History
In honor of National Grandparents Day on September 9th, first-grade students in Mrs. Prochilo’s class at Eastplain Elementary School in the Plainedge School District were asked to gather their
family history. Children were asked to have their parents and grandparents get involved in the assignment and to build a small family tree, complete with short descriptions and photos.
In the classroom, students took the assignment one step further by creating hand puppets representative of their grandparents and putting on small plays with their classmates.

“One of the nicest things about our program is that — just like Nassau BOCES — it is open to people from all walks of life, and we welcome nominations that reflect this diversity,” said Dr. Thomas Rogers, Nassau BOCES district superintendent. “Each year, we honor those whose impact on public education can be measured in a tangible way. And, in these challenging times we are especially appreciative of people who go above and beyond the scope of their commitments.” A strategic education partner with local school districts since 1967, Nassau BOCES created the Education Partner Awards program to recognize those who share its commitment to providing the best possible education for learners of all ages and abilities. Over the past six years, the Nassau BOCES Education Partner Awards program has recognized more than 75 individuals for their influence on public education. The awards program is open to everyone who is involved with, or is a supporter of, preschool to
