Program Student Exchange. The twenty Bay Shore High School IB students who hosted the twenty Danish students remarked unanimously that doing so was one of the best educational experiences they’d ever had. Although the opportunity to host a student in itself is a beneficial intercultural experience, IB students who are able to travel to Denmark and stay with a Danish host family will achieve still greater international perspective. The ability to immerse themselves in the day-to-day experience of Danish culture will forever change the way they view American culture, leading to a deeper understanding of their own values and beliefs. The purpose of the grant money so generously awarded by the Evelyn Blose Holman
Education Foundation (EBHEF) is to provide support to students struggling to cover travel expenses to Denmark associated with airfare and lodging. The Denmark Exchange Trip was designed to be affordable, with costs reduced by having students reside in the homes of Danish host families. Still, airfare,

“The international exchange visit to Denmark is a capstone experience for the IB Diploma student,” said Jon Nelson, International Baccalaureate (IB) Program Coordinator. “Developing intercultural empathy and understanding is a required element of the IB curriculum and is reflected in the international dimensions of every IB course.” Thus, to truly understand the workings of a global world, students should ideally gain first-hand experience of another culture and interact with the people of that culture. In November, twenty students and two teachers from Sct. Knuds Gymnasium, an upper secondary school in Odense, Denmark, arrived in Bay Shore for six days to take part in the first part of the IB

would make it about three days into summer vacation before whining that there was “nothing” to do. Ah, to be that young and innocent again. Nowadays, most people work overtime leading up to and following a “vacation,” only to have it interspersed by checking e-mails, voicemails and “touching base” to make sure everything is running smoothly in their absence. I can’t remember the last time I spent even a handful of days completely cut off from the rest of the world. Sounds nice, doesn’t it? Sounds like a plan, in fact. Once I catch up on the week. If I ever do :)

STUFFING THE BUS - This December, students at South Country School showed their compassionate nature by donating countless food items to benefit others in the Bay Shore community. For the past four years, South Country School has been participating in its own version of Stuff-A-Bus. Each year, the students and staff collect hundreds of donations, including canned goods, rice, cereal, soup, pasta and juice boxes, all of which are sent to St. Patrick’s Hospitality Center, a center that provides meals and supplies to members of our community who are in need. This year, South Country School collected over 1,400 items.
No matter how much of a “head start” I get on the week, I always feel completely overwhelmed by the time Friday comes around. Is it just me? Do I subconsciously slow down the pace as the week progresses, forcing everything to pile up at the end? Or does the list of “To Do” items continuously outweigh the “Done” section, as seven more tasks are added for every two accomplished? So it would seem. And all this without taking a day off. Imagine if, by some sheer loss of judgement, I actually tried to cram everything into four days,
rather than five. What would happen then? Not that the weekends are particularly restful and relaxing either, mind you. No, they pretty much consist of two days of nonstop running around, back and forth across the Island, in a fruitless effort to mix chores, errands and maybe a touch of recreation thrown in for good measure (read: mental health). When did my schedule become so insane? Seems like it was not so long ago that I had quite a bit more free time on my hands, even days when I was somewhat bored. Imagine that. Sort of makes you wish for the days back in elementary school when you
my luck before the deadline ended,” Mrs. Genc-Forbes stated, “so I was surprised to see any response, as so many other organizations write to them.” The Walmart Foundation wrote to the Brook Avenue PFA, “We believe that your organization is doing important work for the
communities you serve, and we are proud that we are able to support you in your efforts.” Congratulations to Nadja, the Brook Avenue PFA, and the students and teachers at Brook Avenue School for being awarded this wonderful grant.

9 South Bay Shore - South Bay’s Neighbor NEWSPAPERS - Wednesday January 23, 2013
A place where children grow and succeed. Our schools give children the well-rounded education to go far. The powerful commitment to academic excellence and strong spiritual guidance at Long Island Catholic elementary schools reaps proven benefits for our students. “How do you go red?” asks the American Heart Association. On Friday, February 1st, people from across Long Island, as well as corporations, businesses, hospitals, towns, schools, local and state legislators, members of the media, teachers, and people from all walks of life will be wearing red to focus attention on - and raise funds to fight - the No. 1 killer of women – cardiovascular disease. On February 1st, the American Heart Association’s 10th Annual National Wear Red Day asks women to show their support for the fight against heart disease in women by wearing red. It’s an easy, powerful way to speak up and show support for Go Red For Women®, the American Heart Association’s solution to save women’s lives. The Go Red For Women movement, sponsored nationally by Macys and Merck urges women to take charge of their cardiovascular health, make it a top priority and live a stronger, longer
life. The North ShoreLong Island Jewish Health System is the Cities Go Red Sponsor for the movement. Every minute in the United States, someone’s wife, mother, daughter or sister dies from heart disease, stroke or other form of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women age 25 and older and stroke is the No. 4 killer of women, as women account for 61 percent of all stroke deaths annually. The American Heart Association Go Red For Women movement is about turning around these statistics. It’s also about resources, information and hope. Donations to Go Red For Women help support our efforts to educate women and to fund breakthrough research by the American Heart Association that helps ensure women are represented in clinical studies. Since 2004, through its fundraising efforts, Go Red For Women has contributed almost $44 million to women-

The semifinalists mentored at Stony Brook University participated in the Simons Summer Research Program, the Garcia Center for Polymers at Engineered Interfaces Summer Research Program or independently under the direction of Stony Brook Faculty members. In addition to mentoring 49 percent of Long Island’s semifinalists, Stony Brook faculty mentored four semifinalists from California,

focused research and has provided additional funds to life-saving educational programs and tools for physicians. On February 1st, or on a different day if you wish, you and your colleagues are encouraged to wear red (and dress down if your company allows) and each donate $5 or more. As a thank you for their support, each participant will receive a Go Red For Women® red dress pin or sticker to wear, along with information about how to make healthy choices every day. As a Wear Red Day Coordinator, you’ll receive a Coordinator’s Tool Kit with all the materials needed to conduct a successful Wear Red Day event – including a Coordinator’s Guide, educational materials, posters, and ideas to make your event successful and fun. Did you know metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer tumors can help fuel themselves by producing androgen? Research shows that metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) tumors are capable of producing their own androgen, which can help fuel their survival.. This information could help in managing your mCRPC. The more you know about the disease, the better equipped you are to discuss it with your doctor.

Developed by Charles Best, a high school History teacher in the Bronx, DonorsChoose. org makes it easy to help classrooms in need of supplies for specific projects, from pencils for poetry to microscopes for mitochondria. Bay Shore teachers have certainly found this to be the case. At Bay Shore High School, Mr. Claiborne requested and received three tape measures and three packs of timers for his “Walk This Way” Physics lab, which requires students to mark out a course of travel, record times at which travelers cross designated locations, collect and graph their results and calculate the slope of the line to find velocity. At Bay Shore Middle School, Mrs. Payne-Yarborough’s Newspaper Club received a camera, laptop and printer, all of which were used to enhance the school newspaper and successfully capture and reflect heartfelt and/ or “magical” moments from around their school community. At Fifth Avenue School, Mrs. Shelley’s students received a colorful, cozy carpet they now use as a welcoming place to share stories, participate in learning activities and read comfortably throughout their literacy block. Another Fifth Avenue teacher, Mrs. Sharon Hinnant, submitted three projects to DonorsChoose and all were funded: Little Listeners in Need of Listening Center Materials, Little Learners in Need of Organization, and Alphabet Carpet. Mrs. Hinnant expressed her gratitude for the
high quality stories/books on CD now available in the classroom’s listening center, the storage bins that are helping students learn to efficiently store and organize materials and supplies, and the huge, brightly colored alphabet carpet that enhances her students’ reading/community area. Ms. Suzzivalli, a teacher at Fifth Avenue School, has had four projects funded through DonorsChoose. org: Essential Supplies for Young Reader and Writers, Creating a Cozy Reading Space for Eager Readers, Need for NonFiction and Essentials for Organization in the Classroom. Like Mrs. Hinnant, Ms. Suzzivalli has since posted more project requests, hoping to receive even more donations from this wonderful organization. At Gardiner Manor, one of Mr. Modderno’s requests, I Can Be a Better Me from What I Read,
was also fully funded. His students received books about self-esteem that were used in the remedial reading program to enrich understanding about bullying and selfrespect. In all, 23 Bay Shore Schools faculty members have received donations through DonorsChoose. org project requests, including 14 at Fifth Avenue School alone. Many Bay Shore teachers have current DonorsChoose.org campaigns on line. To support their efforts, please visit DonorsChoose.org, click on projects, enter Bay Shore as a location and begin supporting Bay Shore teachers and students in their campaigns. Below is a complete list of teachers with successful Donors Choose campaigns. Congratulations to each and every one of them.
