way for both long time and new residents to support the artists of our region,” stated Geoffrey K. Fleming, Director of the Society. “The Society is very proud that half of all the money raised at this event will go to support the participating artists,” he continued. The location of the event, the Castello di Borghese Vineyard, is one of the oldest and most important of the wineries located on the North Fork. Set amidst the vines, the vineyard’s tasting room and large reception area are the perfect spot for an auction. “We are delighted to have the support of the vineyard and its owners, Prince Marco and Princess Ann Marie Borghese,” continued Fleming. The preview will begin at 6 p.m., with the auction beginning at 7 p.m. There is a $10 entry donation, which includes wine and hors d’oeuvres. This inexpensive fee will allow those in attendance to spend the rest of their hard earned money on a beautiful artwork for their
home or office. To see images of the works that will be up for sale at the auction, please visit the Society website www. southoldhistoricalsociety. org and click “Auction of Fine Art” at the left hand of your screen. Live, on-line bidding will be
available through www. liveauctioneers.com. For further information on this event and others at the Society, please call 631.765.5500 or visit us on the web at www. southoldhistoricalsociety. org.

The event will benefit both the Society as well as many of the living artists participating in the event. Some of the featured items include landscape and seascape paintings by Whitney M. Hubbard, William Steeple Davis, Albert Latham, Otto J. Kurth, Helen Kroeger. Spring Has Sprung On Fire Island The leaves are returning, the water is warming and newly born deer are showing their small heads. As with every April, Fire Island is abuzz with life. After a trip to our barrier island, one can immediately conclude that not everything has been drastically altered by last year’s Hurricane Sandy. At first glance, everything seems as if it was in shambles; but upon further inspection, it is evident that nature is beginning to make a comeback! Vegetation is already starting to fill in all of the damaged areas, and even with the ongoing construction, animals are finally making their way
back out of hiding, onto the beaches and into the water. Seagulls are increasing in number and it seems as if they are thriving. Piping Plover populations have bounced back to a healthy number, considering their spot on the endangered species list. Taking a stroll down the beach, one can already spot patches of Beach Heather, a very common yellow plant, dotting the shoreline. Accounts of whale sightings are becoming less and less frequent, signaling the end to a cold winter, and the beginning of a beautiful summer. All in all, life is finally returning to Fire Island, coincidentally just in time for Earth Day, on April 22nd. Spring is a very
crucial part in the health of Fire Island, as the beaches elongate and erosion is reversed. This cyclic trend will lead to more room for beachgoers in the 2013 season. Nature isn’t the only thing on the mend after Hurricane Sandy; establishments, such as Maguire’s Bayfront Restaurant in Ocean Beach, are getting ready to open up their doors. There is no doubt that Fire Island will be in “fighting shape” and ready for the masses as we kick off the season with a very solid spring. This fun and time honored event is geared towards families, children and adults alike. Incredible llamas and other animals will be there for everyone to admire. Children will be making adorable seasonal crafts and playing wonderful oldfashioned games. Our face

Be sure to stop by the historic Kissam House Museum where you will step back in time and see what life was like in Huntington long ago. This Festival is truly a crowd pleaser and the perfect way to welcome the warm weather. And as if that’s not enough, a trolley will run
back and forth between the Sheep To Shawl Festival and the Annual Tulip Festival in Heckscher Park. Muster Day will be presented at the arsenal and on the Green immediately across the street from the Kissam House. You can make an afternoon of it filled with community spirit, fun and local history. Can you think of a better way to celebrate the season? This event is made possible in part with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts. Students of Harley Avenue Primary School in the Elwood Union Free School District recently enjoyed a visit from the ArtsPower National Touring Theatre, who shared a musical presentation of The Rainbow Fish based on the popular book by Marcus Pfister.
Students were introduced to a character named Rainbow Fish who believes she is the most beautiful fish in the sea, as well as her two less sparkly friends, Green Fish and Blue Fish. When she refuses to share her silvery scales with them, they decide to end the friendship.
Student spectators joined Rainbow on a journey through the ocean to seek the answers needed to cure her loneliness. They enjoyed a variety of song and dance routines that led to a valuable lesson in sharing and being a good friend.

By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I am not a domestic person by nature. Or, at least, I never thought I was. The whole cooking, cleaning, doing laundry thing just seemed so… boring and tedious. I never wanted to learn, promising my mom that, once the time came for me to move out on my own, I would simply hire a gourmet chef and a maid. Voilá! Problem solved. Right. Well, back in the real world, while the prospect of cooking for myself seemed slightly intriguing, I always had visions of water boiling over onto the stove, clouds of smoke billowing out of the oven…that sort of thing. Laundry was another issue.
Too many compartments, dials, buttons… lights, whites, darks… bleach, fabric softener, water temperatures, load sizes… delicate cycles, special washing and drying instructions… Wouldn’t it be easier to just take everything to the dry cleaners and have them sort it out? Sure, minus the $500 weekly bill maybe. Being a bit of a neat freak – okay, maybe slightly OCD – I’ve actually always enjoyed the vacuuming and dusting part of things, organizing, categorizing... all that fun stuff. Everything but cleaning the windows. I seem to have a small issue with – how would you put it – not making them look even worse than before I touched them. Well, as it turns out, when
you actually come to the point in life when you must learn to do all of these necessary things for yourself – you know, just in case the maid calls in sick one day – it’s really not as hard as it looks. A little reading comprehension, a touch of common sense and lots of advice from Mom & Dad… with some trial and error, most things turn out just fine. That’s not to say I haven’t let a pot or two of water boil a little too ferociously, or had a couple of things get a bit too well done in the oven. But rest assured, no fire departments had to be called in the making of my culinary creations. A small victory. Now if I could only get that fuzzy sweater to be fuzzy again…

portrays recent high school students who have chosen to attend Suffolk; students who successfully have transferred to other recognized four-year institutions; and alumni who are now succeeding in their chosen careers. Founded in 1979, the Telly Awards is the premier award honoring outstanding local, regional, and cable TV commercials and programs, as well as the finest video and film productions, and web commercials, videos and films. The Telly Awards is a widely known and highly respected national and international competition and receives over 12,000 entries annually from all 50 states and many foreign countries. Dr. Shaun L. McKay, President of Suffolk County Community College, stated, “We are so proud of our marketing and public relations team. They continue to achieve recognition for developing communications that reflect the quality of our
institution.” The winning print campaign features recent high school students from across Suffolk County who have chosen to start their college careers by attending Suffolk. The Silver Award for logo design was for the recent creation of the Suffolk County Community College Sharks athletics brand identity. Judges consisted of a national panel of higher education marketers, advertising creative directors, marketing professionals and the Board of the Higher Education Marketing Report. “We have wonderful stories to share through our communications,” said Drew Fawcett, Associate Dean for Institutional Advancement. “Our advertising continues to underscore the value that our residents see in Suffolk County Community College.” The campaign was created in-house by the College’s Office of Institutional Advancement.

opportunities, National League teams compete for the invitations to the annual U.S. Youth Soccer National Championships, the oldest and most prestigious youth soccer national championship. The Elite defeated Empire Revolution (New York West), 1-0, on March 17th in Las Vegas to jump over Concorde Fire Elite (Georgia) and punching their ticket to the National Championships. Richie Mastrangelo delivered the goal Dix Hills needed in the 13th minute, and the defense held on the rest of the way as Dix Hills is now planning to play for the National Championship with just 7 other 15 year old teams in the country. “The main reason for the team advancing to the National Championships in Kansas this summer is simply because of the hard work the boys put in during training,” commented Dix Hills coach Dominic Casciato. “We’ve been all over the place with the weather this winter, but when it’s time to train, the players really apply
themselves regardless of the circumstances and take on board everything they are being taught. In addition to that, although I’ve only been coaching the team for about nine months, the majority of the boys have been together a long time and there is a great team spirit within the squad, which can often be the deciding factor in close games like those we played in the National League.” Dix Hills won the State Open Cup in 2011 and the 2011 Massapequa Winter College Showcase (as Under-14s playing up a year), then repeated last year in Massapequa against teams of the same age. The squad also won the 2011 Brooklyn Italians Christopher Columbus Cup, the 2012 Annandale Premier Cup in Virginia and the 2012 Spirit Kick-Off Classic in Pennsylvania. To prepare for Kansas, Dix Hills is playing in the Region I Premier League, EDP League and State Open Cup this spring.

This generous Petco Foundation grant will help Last Hope with transport and veterinary costs of adoptable Kentucky dogs. In rural states, Beagles and other hounds are routinely abandoned, starved or even shot when not deemed worthwhile hunting dogs. Daviess County Shelter currently has a staff of five, including some prison inmates, handling over 5,000 animals a year. With the help of shelters like Last Hope on Long Island, Daviess has dramatically been able to improve adoptions and lower the number of animals put to sleep. In 2008, 90 percent of the dogs and cats at this Kentucky shelter were euthanized. Now the figure is much lower, less than 10 percent. “In 2009, Daviess

Last Hope Animal Rescue & Rehabilitation, Inc. recently announced it has been awarded a $12,000 grant from the Petco Foundation to support our collaborative effort with the Daviess County Animal Control of Owensboro, Kentucky to bring dogs in need (mainly hounds that would be euthanized) to the Last Hope Dog Adoption Center in Wantagh where they will be readily adopted. Last Hope is a nonprofit organization with a mission to save deathdue, abandoned and stray animals. In 2011 we rescued 40 dogs from this shelter, and 65 more in 2012. Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature, has granted $80,000 in matching funds to implement SPARKBOOM immediately. Five Towns College under the direction of President Dr. Martin Cohen has joined the project as Lead Sponsor, enabling kickoff in time for Long Island’s summer season. “We’re so pleased to know of the Governor’s support for the future of art on Long Island. We’re so grateful for the commitment of Five Towns College to celebrating the talents of Long Island’s own young people. We are proud to be Long Islanders,” said Jennifer Sappell, SPARKBOOM Coordinator. The goal of SPARKBOOM is to foster the success of Long Island’s emerging creative talent by providing opportunities, programs and event experiences geared to GenY, 18-34 years of age. The creation of the joint partnership is groundbreaking
and directly addresses the “brain drain” of Long Island’s young professionals. Ms. Sappell said, “We know that Long Island has much to offer. So many resources! Too often young people leave Long Island before learning to appreciate their roots. We’re doing our part to change that.” A kick-off launch party featuring a live DJ set from Multiple Mono with artwork by Long Island natives Michelle Carollo and Richard Gardner was held at fotofoto gallery in Huntington on April 6, 2013 and was attended by over 300 people. Attendees remarked about “a Manhattan vibe” at the event, said Ms. Sappell, who called it “the highest compliment.” SPARKBOOM will highlight the innovative artistic and cultural resources surrounding the Huntington hub during 2013. Additional funding will be sought to expand the program Island-wide within several years.

The Huntington Arts Council held a press conference to announce major funding for a new initiative involving arts and economic development on Long Island. The program is titled “SPARKBOOM” in reference to the creative process that generated the program, as well as the vision for arts as a catalyst for Long Island’s regional economic stability. In August 2012, the Huntington Arts Council forged new ground by partnering with twelve local private, not-for-profit and municipal partners to discuss collective efforts to support emerging talent. The founding partners’ devotion to highlighting the Long Island region as both vibrant and sustainable has manifested itself in SPARKBOOM. Diana Cherryholmes, Executive Director of the Huntington Arts Council (fiscal agent for SPARKBOOM), announced that the New York State Council for the Arts, with support of Governor

Prepare a deck or patio for entertaining Few things are better than having a functional and beautiful outdoor space to entertain guests. Having a great outdoor space enables a person to host parties or intimate gatherings all year long. Establishing an entertaining space and maintaining that space are essential when planning another year of fun in the sun. There are many things homeowners can do to ensure their entertaining space is safe and functional. As the season approaches, include some landscaping and decorating components to your preparatory plans to make the space as comfortable and aesthetically appealing as possible. Here are a few key tips for readying your yard for entertaining possibilities. Expand on these basics to customize an area for your unique needs. * Check the area for any needed repairs. Prior to your first entertaining session, look over the deck or patio to take note of any flaws that may present safety hazards. Are there any loose railings? Are all screws and nails flush so they do not cause tripping? Are there any cracks in concrete or loose patio blocks? Be sure to remedy all of the repairs needed to ensure guests will be safe. If you are unsure of any structural deficits, consult with a contractor. * Hire a reputable contractor. If you are just laying the groundwork for a new patio or deck, it is important to get the necessary permits and then hire a person who has been properly vetted. Check qualifications and licensing before hiring a contractor and ask to view a portfolio of his or her previous work. Word-of-mouth recommendations from trusted friends and family members are good, and you can also double-check qualifications by contacting the Better Business Bureau to see if any complaints have been lodged or use a service such as Angie’s List to read reviews of his or her work.
for when the sun is too uncomfortable to make sitting outside enjoyable. Similarly, have a sunny area where people can soak up a few rays or dry off after a dip in the spa or pool. Don’t forget to establish a spot for the kids to converge with scaleddown amenities. * Consider a fireplace or fire pit. For centuries man (and woman) has gathered around fire for socialization and a means to warming up. Having a backyard fireplace, pit or chiminea is a conversation-starter, a decorative focal point, and a functional tool to extend the number of seasons in which outdoor entertaining can take place. Place the fire wisely and with concern for safety. It should be out of the way of foot traffic, but central enough so that it can be a gathering point. * Invest in quality outdoor furniture. Today’s yards are extensions of a home’s interior. Guests no longer want to sit on uncomfortable metal or plastic furniture. There are many different outdoor sofas and chairs that are as stylish as they are comfortable. These pieces can be matched to the decor inside your home for a cohesive look. * Accessorize. Consider the creature comforts of indoors and mimic that outdoors. Don’t shy away from hanging artwork on an exterior wall or using urns or pottery to decorate the space. Weather-resistant materials ensure everything from clocks to televisions can be used outdoors. Think about having an entire set of serving dishes and other entertaining items for the outdoors. When refurbishing outdoor entertaining areas, emphasize comfort, safety and functionality.
Did you know?
* Think about closing in a portion of a deck or patio. The use of a canopy, netting or even greenery to protect an entertaining space can help minimize weather-related damage to outdoor furniture. For homeowners, this is the perfect opportunity to assess any damage the previous months did to yards and develop a plan restore properties.
* Employ a pre-emergent weed killer. Homeowners who routinely spend their summers agonizing over weeds throughout the yard should consider applying a pre-emergent weed killer around the beginning of spring. It’s important to do so around the end of March or early April, when the weeds have not yet had a chance to grow. When applying, follow the dosage instructions provided by the product’s manufacturer. Such instructions often recommend a second application right before summer begins.

How to edge a lawn Edging a lawn is a springtime rite of passage for many homeowners. When winter has come and gone, many lawns are left in need of some serious maintenance, including edging. Well-defined edges around the yard make the yard look more organized and better maintained. And edging is relatively easy, especially for those homeowners with a smaller yard. Edging can be time-consuming for those with more property, but when done properly, edging is definitely worth the effort. * Remove debris from the areas you plan to edge. Before you even begin to edge, be sure to remove any debris from those areas that need edging. Debris, including rocks, twigs or the kids’ toys, left lying around can be kicked up when you’re edging, potentially causing injury to you or someone standing nearby. * Purchase safety goggles. Even if you have removed all visible debris, there still may be some items hidden in the grass. These items can be kicked up and hit you in the eye, so purchase some safety goggles and be sure to wear them whenever you’re edging. As an added precaution, keep kids and others away from any areas you’re edging so they aren’t injured by any unseen debris that
gets kicked up while you’re working. * Check your tools. Edging can be done by using a gas-powered edger or a string trimmer. Before you begin to edge, inspect these tools to ensure they’re capable of handling the task at hand. Inspect the blades on a gas-powered edger to make sure they haven’t dulled since their most recent use. If they are dull, sharpen them before you start to edge. When using a string trimmer, make sure you have enough string on hand to complete the project. String trimmers use a particular kind of string, so visit your local lawn care or hardware store if you don’t feel like you have enough. * Position your edger properly. Once you have given your tools the green light, it’s time to start edging. When you begin, make sure the edger is between the sidewalk or driveway and the edge of the lawn, placing the wheel of the edger on the sidewalk or driveway and then pushing and pulling the edger until you have created a clear edge. If you have never edged before, you may want to practice on smaller, more isolated areas until you become comfortable operating the edger.

Huntington Supervisor Frank P. Petrone and Council Members Mark Cuthbertson and Susan A. Berland joined with Dylan Thompson and his mother, Gloria, in watching as the Thompsons’ Centerport house was demolished to make way for a new home that will more accessible for 19-year-old Dylan, who has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. The Town worked with the Syosset-based Building Hope for Long Island Foundation, the not-forprofit that helped raise money for the project, which it is undertaking. Supervisor Petrone waived all permit fees, expedited the demolition and building permits and
New Home
assisted the foundation in locating companies who could help with disposal of the demolition debris. “I admire Dylan’s courage in battling this disease, and am pleased that the Town could assist in a project that will make life easier for him and his mother. I applaud the Building Hope for Long Island Foundation for their efforts and look forward to working with them as this project progresses,” Supervisor Petrone said. “Several years ago, Dylan’s Footprint, the organization that helped raise money for the project, participated in the Town’s Earth Day Expo because the new house will not only be handicapped accessible but
Shared Effort
also energy efficient and environmentally sensitive. It is exciting to see the project reach this stage,” Councilman Cuthbertson said. “This is an important milestone for Dylan and his family, and I’m pleased the Town was able to have a role in helping to make it happen,” Councilwoman Berland said. “I hope this project will further raise awareness of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and prompt donations for research to find a cure.” The Building Hope for Long Island Foundation estimates that the Thomspons will be able to move into their new home in six months.
Stimson’s Schoolbased Management Team (SBM) has been very busy over the past couple of months, and, along with the Stimson community, is credited for adopting the Lindenhurst Middle School after they were devastated by Hurricane Sandy. “Our SBM team adopted Lindenhurst Middle School in an effort to provide relief to the families devastated by the storm,” said Stimson Principal Ms. Faye Robins. “Through the SBM’s fundraising efforts, over $1,000 was raised, along with a minibus full of supplies and sporting goods. On April 5th, we had the pleasure of delivering all of it to Lindenhurst, where we were met by Principal Frank Naccarato and students and staff from Lindenhurst’s Middle
School. The gratification we felt is beyond expression.” Principal Robins would like to thank her SBM team of MaryEllen Jaworski, Kathy O’Donohue, Nancy Gray, Norma Ferrante, Rob Bilicki, Rosa Kazandjian, Emily Blank, Michael Giarizzo, and Noelle Bryggman for working so closely to get this done. “Thanks also to our two winning homerooms--Ms. Scavo’s and Ms. Daniello’s-for successfully raising the most to support this worthwhile endeavor,” added Principal Robins. “This means so much, to have communities like Stimson come together to help us out of a bad situation,” said Principal Naccarato. “Things were very grave here for a while. A lot of people lost their
homes, and many lost everything they had. A lot of our kids really struggled, but because of districts like South Huntington that took up our cause, things are so much better now.” A very special thank you to the following students who loaded the minibus at Stimson: Andrew Avila, Farrell Blum, Erika Lopez, Edward Nitkewicz, Marissa Pastore, Joseph Pecorella, Joshua Ramtahal, Daniel Sgaraglio, Sean Smith, and Dennis Sposato. Additionaly Principal Robins would like to acknowledge the follow staff members who’s help made the day possible: Sandra Adebola, Laura Carrano, Barbara Costa, Shari Daniello, Cheryl Murphy, Margaret O’Brien, Margaret Vetter and Bettina Wright.

Sculpture Comes To Huntington The Huntington Station Plaza took another significant step toward completion recently with the installation of Generations, a four-piece limestone sculpture that will serve as a centerpiece for the Huntington Station revitalization project that is in its final stages. With the help of a crane and riggers from Huntingtonbased C. R. Hamilton, what Denver sculptor Madeline Wiener informally calls “the stone family” was positioned in the Plaza, at the intersection of New York Avenue and Olive Street. Consisting of four separate sculptural elements carved from dolomitic limestone – guitar player, grandmother & child, guitar case, and drum – “Generations” is the latest in a series of the artist’s “bench people:” figurative sculptures that the public can also sit on. “Generations is a work of art that people can come to the Plaza to enjoy and that they can use to enjoy the Plaza,” said Huntington Supervisor Frank P. Petrone, who met with Wiener during the installation. “This sculpture both furthers the goals of the is the Town’s Public Art Initiative and exemplifies the revitalization “smart growth” principle of developing a public infrastructure of beautiful places that become walkable destinations within a community. An official ceremony welcoming the sculpture will be part of the formal Plaza dedication that will be held after the installation of landscaping and completion of other final details of the Plaza’s construction. The installation of Generations was the final step in a process that began in 2011 with issuance by the Town’s Public Art Initiative of a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) seeking submissions from interested artists. Following review of the 54 submissions, an Artist Selection Panel unanimously recommended Wiener based on her extensive experience, the quality of her past work, and the appropriateness of her “bench people” concept for this project location. That recommendation
that was enthusiastically endorsed by the Town’s Public Art Advisory Committee and the Huntington Economic Development Corporation (EDC) before being approved by the Town Board. The artist’s initial task of familiarizing herself with the Huntington Station community was greatly aided by the fact that, although now a resident of Denver, Colorado, Wiener grew up in Brooklyn and over the years has been frequent visitor to Long Island, often staying with Long Island relatives who reside in Huntington and surrounding communities. In addition, a series of interviews with a wide variety of different Huntington Station residents and community leaders helped the artist develop her concept for “Generations,” which draws upon the importance of music in our community as well as a strong cross-cultural and multi-generational emphasis on families. Following approval of this design proposal by the
Town Board in March of 2012, the artist proceeded with the lengthy process of creating her larger-than-lifesized sculpture. Blocks of dolomitic limestone quarried specially for the artist were transported from Wiarton, Ontario to a facility in Colorado where each block was “profiled” by cutting away large unwanted sections
of stone to reveal the rough profile of each planned sculptural component. After transfer of the profiled stone to the artist’s nearby studio, Wiener and her assistants used a diamond chain saw to remove smaller pieces of stone to further refine the remaining forms. Eventually, a succession of diamond grit grinders were used, starting with nine-inch pads and gradually progressing to smaller and smaller pads for finer shaping of the forms. After completing each form, selective polishing and texturing of the various stone surfaces yielded contrasting finishes to highlight different segments of each sculptural component. Transport of the completed work to Huntington Station began on Monday, April 1st, with the loading of “the stone family” onto a flatbed truck headed on its multi-day cross country journey to Long Island. On Friday, April 5th, each for the four pieces – weighing between 1,100-8,000 lbs. – was lifted separately by crane from the flatbed and carefully positioned on their new home as a centerpiece of the Huntington Station Plaza. Design and creation of the work was supported by grants from the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and from Round 6 of the Suffolk County Downtown Revitalization Program, as well as funds from the Town Public Art Initiative. Photos documenting each of the steps in the creation of “Generations” can be viewed on the project blog at http://huntingtonstationgenerations. wordpress.com/. For additional information about the Wiener and other works that she has created, visit www. madelinewiener.com. Further information on the project, or other Town of Huntington Public Art Initiative projects currently on view, can be obtained from the Division of Cultural Affairs at 631.351.3099 or by viewing the Public Art Inventory on the Town’s web site at www.HuntingtonNY. gov.
