They say that two of the most taboo topics are religion and politics, subjects that should be avoided at all costs when in mixed company. Before I had my own legitimate opinions on such matters, I have to admit that I never understood what the big deal was. Now I get it. Especially in this day and age, with the advent of social media and the ability to post all sorts of potentially controversial tweets, status updates, photos, videos, etc.… is it any wonder that tensions tend to build to the point of heated disagreements? One day you’re “friends” – the next you’re engaged in a bitter dispute over political ideals. Some things should simply be left for private discourse.

Personally, I have always felt that, as long as your opinion is well informed and based on some sort of intelligent foundation, there should really be no need to defend it. Believe what you believe; just don’t try to impose it upon others. That’s what the politicians are for. Those basic philosophies which make us different are precisely what make our society unique – and interesting. No need to change that. When things take a nasty turn – which they inevitably seem to – whether in the form of written discourse or verbal sparring, that’s when it has gone too far. A little healthy debate is fine, and should be encouraged even. We should all be open to other viewpoints – perhaps, in our own narrow-minded tunnel vision, we may have missed some-

thing valid and eye opening. But merely shoving your unsolicited opinions down someone else’s throat is not only unnecessary, but borders on disrespectful. Voting booths are private for a reason, as are many religious institutions and practices. No one should feel obligated to defend his/her beliefs, so long as they are founded in some sort of informed, grounded philosophy. And if they aren’t, if they are merely based on a handful of regurgitated talking points or hearsay – well then, why would you want to recruit someone so ignorant to your side anyway? Better they are left to their own devices. Simply my opinion. Take it or leave it. {This message was approved by Jamie Lynn Ryan.}

Concussion of the brain is the very common injury that occurs under different circumstances. It can occur during the simple slip and fall accident, motor vehicle accident, but most commonly it does in sport. Over the last ten years a lot of research was done with an intention to explain why there is much higher incidence of neurological disorders affecting professional sport players. This study eventually revealed that a mild head injury causes pathological processes that eventually may lead to neurological diseases such as Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, Lou Gehrig’s, etc. During the mild head injury or mild concussion of the brain, the symptoms of the actual injury could be transient and brief, and eventually this condition becomes virtually asymptomatic or having very subtle symptoms. Those symptoms could be just a mild headache, excessive fatigue, excessive or lack of sleep, problem with concentration. Since many symptoms of concussion are brief and may not be present on the second or third day after the concussion, it will leave very little tools to help a doctor to determine if the player is ready to go back to play. Current thinking is that optimal recovery of concussed students occurs when there is cognitive, physical, and emotional rest following injury. Additionally, research has shown that 92% of second injuries occur in the first week following the initial injury, and the goal is to allow adequate recovery time before allowing a student to risk re-injury. Pressure to return an athlete before it is safe can be intense from parents and athletes. Primary care physicians are being asked to assist in the process of keeping injured children safe by remaining objective and withholding participation until it is deemed safe with a reasonable degree of medical certainty.

return to school), but we anticipate a similar slow exertional challenge as we see in RTP. The graduated steps begin after the student has a medical clearance to return to academics, and is symptom free off pain killing medicines for a full 24 hours. RTL should be an individualized steady progression with the parent’s checking the child daily for a return of symptoms and alerting you if the student is struggling so you can provide appropriate requests for medical accommodations to the school as needed. Unlike a RTP, the RTL might start at any level and progress at a rate individualized to the student’s needs and tolerance. Steps might be skipped as tolerated and might look something like this: Students with reasonable recovery times typically will get accommodations within the school by the principal. Students with protracted recovery beyond about 10 weeks, a school quarter, are likely eligible for a 504 plan or an IEP, and you might be asked to write a request to support the family at that time.

The Concussion Act of NYS

The Concussion Act of NYS took effect July 1, 2012, and requires schools to: • Educate parents, athletes, coaches, athletic trainers, physical education teachers, and school nurses on concussion, • Remove observed or suspected concussed students from play based on signs and symptoms, • Withhold further participation until evaluated by, and received written and signed authorization to return to activities from a licensed physician. • Obtain physician clearance, and when the athlete has been symptom-free off pain killing medicines for a minimum of 24 hours and allow them to begin a monitored progressive six phase return to play. The RTP protocol may not start until an athlete is completely symptom-free for a full 24 hours off pain killing medicines, and must remain symptom-free for 24 hours following each stage before progressing further. RECOVERY Average recovery following concussion is about a week to ten days; protracted recovery with post concussion syndrome is after 21 days. Young teenage girls often have protracted recovery more than any other group. RETURN TO LEARN (RTL) More information will be forthcoming about RTL (cognitive

Grant Won The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) is set to receive a $20,000 grant from the NYS Office of Substance Abuse Services to support its addiction services in Suffolk County, thanks to the efforts of NYS Assemblyman Bob Sweeney. Specifically, the grant funds the expansion of LICADD’s Start2Stop program, which provides drug and alcohol information, solutionfocused counseling, peer support and treatment referrals to local residents of all ages. Start2Stop is a professionally facilitated support group that helps participants explore their substance abuse experiences and attitudes about drugs and alcohol, learn more about the biological/social and psychological consequences of use and understand the impact such use has had, and will have on their lives and relationships. The twelve week psychoeducational program is designed for individuals who have had some involvement with drug

and/or alcohol use, but may not yet be ready to seek treatment or live a substance-free life. Participants may have experienced personal or professional consequences of their substance use, or may have been arrested for a non-violent low-level offense that involved the use of alcohol and/or illegal substances. The group is also perfect for those who are awaiting placement into inpatient or outpatient chemical dependency treatment. The program is 100% confidential and open to all regardless of ability to pay. Start2Stop participants are required to abstain from any drug or alcohol use while they are enrolled in the program. Those who are unable to remain abstinent during the twelve weeks of sessions are counseled and referred for more intensive treatment. With a well-publicized opiate crisis gripping Long Island and a documented upswing in impaired driving and boating, LICADD Executive Director Dr. Jeffrey Reynolds says

support for Start2Stop comes at the perfect time. “I am grateful to Assemblyman Sweeney for helping us make this program more accessible to local residents before their use of drugs and alcohol accelerates,” he said. “This proactive approach and timely intervention will help make Suffolk County a safer and healthier place.” “Long Island continues to experience a number of well-publicized tragedies due to substance abuse. The Start2Stop program helps participants get control of their substance abuse problem before it escalates into a tragedy. While we need strong laws to deal with the results of DWI and BWI incidents, it is far better to prevent those tragedies from happening in the first place. That’s what this grant is intended to do,” said Assemblyman Sweeney. For more information about Start2Stop, or any of LICADD’s other services, please call 631.979.1700 or visit www.licadd.org.

In recognition of October as Pit Bull Awareness Month, the Town of Huntington is partnering with the League for Animal Protection to offer free spaying or neutering of pit bulls and pit bull mixes owned by Town residents. “The Town and the League have worked together at our shelter to increase awareness of the adoptability of pit bulls as

pets and to work with the pit bull and pit bull mixes at the shelter to make them more adoptable,” Huntington Supervisor Frank P. Petrone said. “This one-month program is a logical extension of that effort, encouraging Huntington residents to be responsible pet owners by having their pets spayed or neutered to help reduce the unwanted pet population.”

Persons wishing to take advantage of the program should visit the Town Animal Shelter on Deposit Road in East Northport and bring proof of residency. They will be given a voucher that they can take to a participating veterinarian, who will perform the procedure. For more information, contact the shelter at 631.754.8722.

Long Island Heart Walk They walked for Long Island friends and neighbors, they walked for family members and loved ones, they walked in honor and in memory of the close to 9,600 people on Long Island that die each year from cardiovascular diseases and stroke – Long Island’s No. 1 and No. 4 causes of death. They walked to start a healthier journey and a healthier life. Led by John Buran, President & CEO of Flushing Bank, American Heart Association Long Island Heart Walk Red Cap Ambassador, 13 year-old, Cecilia Funk and her family, and WCBS-TV correspondent Jennifer McLogan and thousands of walkers on a beautiful warm and sunny day, stepped out on Sunday, September 23rd, at Jones Beach to help save Long Island lives from heart disease and stroke. “It has been a pleasure and an honor to lead this campaign as Chairman and I appreciate each and every one that supported our efforts to make a difference and save lives.” said John Buran. The Long Island Heart Walk was an opportunity for people to improve

their health by walking, while simultaneously raising funds to help fight heart disease and stroke. The American Heart Association’s My Heart. My Life.™ movement will change how Americans live their lives. My Heart. My Life. is about making health a priority – as individuals and as families – by starting with small changes and building toward an ideal health goal. With a focus on personal and incremental change, My Heart. My Life. offers hands-on experiences and practical solutions to help people get physically active, eat healthy and pass healthy habits on to future generations. By making small changes to take care of their hearts, Americans engaged in the My Heart. My Life. movement put themselves on a path to a longer, better life. The days’ event also included a morning health fair, kid’s zone, blood pressure screenings, entertainment by the Adelphi University college cheerleaders and dance team and The Long Island Conservatory and music by The S.I.E. band, Nico Padden and Rob Baione. The Long Island Heart

Walk is presented nationally by Subway and Jenny Craig, presenting sponsor Flushing Bank, and Long Island businesses such as Astoria Savings Bank, Allstate, Geico, WinthropUniversity Hospital, Deloitte, Forest Labs, Hon. Thomas Gulotta, J.H. Cohn LLP, MSC Industrial Supply Co., St. Joseph’s College and Stony Brook University Medical Center. Media Sponsors of the event were WBAB-FM 102.3, WBLI-FM 106.1 and Long Island Pulse Magazine. Thirty-nine percent of Americans think they are in ideal health, but fewer than 1 percent actually meet the American Heart Association’s criteria. The association is teaching people what it really means to be healthy, offering practical solutions to improve their lives and the lives of their families. To learn more about the My Heart. My Life. movement, and how your company can become Fit Friendly Company, call the American Heart Association office at 516.450.9126 or visit www.longislandheartwalk. org.
