The annual art auction, featuring the works of both living and past artists of eastern Long Island, is being sponsored by the Southold Historical Society. The auction, which will take place on Saturday, April 27th, will feature works by a number of important local painters, photographers, and artisans. The event will benefit both the Society as well as many of the living artists participating in the event. In addition to works by living artists, which will include John Crimmins, Jada Rowland, Lee Cleary, and Barrbara Zagarek, there will be a number of works by painters of our recent past. Some of the featured items include landscape and seascape paintings by Whitney M. Hubbard, William Steeple Davis, Albert Latham, Otto J. Kurth, Helen Kroeger. Other painters who will be
represented in the auction include the late, noted Setauket Painter, Joseph “Joe” Reboli. “The art auction is a great way for both long time and new residents to support the artists of our region,” stated Geoffrey K. Fleming, Director of the Society. “The Society is very proud that half of all the money raised at this event will go to support the participating artists,” he continued. The location of the event, the Castello di Borghese Vineyard, is one of the oldest and most important of the wineries located on the North Fork. Set amidst the vines, the vineyard’s tasting room and large reception area are the perfect spot for an auction. “We are delighted to have the support of the vineyard and its owners, Prince Marco and Princess Ann Marie Borghese,” continued Fleming.
The preview will begin at 6 p.m., with the auction beginning at 7 p.m. There is a $10 entry donation, which includes wine and hors d’oeuvres. This inexpensive fee will allow those in attendance to spend the rest of their hard earned money on a beautiful artwork for their home or office. To see images of the works that will be up for sale at the auction, please visit the Society website www. southoldhistoricalsociety. org and click “Auction of Fine Art” at the left hand of your screen. Live, on-line bidding will be available through www. liveauctioneers.com. For further information on this event and others at the Society, please call 631.765.5500 or visit us on the web at www. southoldhistoricalsociety. org.

On Thursday, April 4th, The Rotary Club Of Smithtown-Sunrise guest speaker was Nancy Manfredonia, Executive Director of the Central Islip Civic Council and Founder of the Long Island Greenbelt Trail Conference. Nancy’s presentation was on Community Based Non-Profits: Secret Little Engines Of Hope For Long Island. During her discussion she mentioned that despite the prevailing wisdom that Long Island has great schools and wonderful suburban neighborhoods, many Long Island communities are suffering from disinvestment, poor educational outcomes and poverty that is not always recognized. State, County and Town governments have been ineffective in dealing with these individual distressed neighborhoods. The Central Islip Civic Council is a small, community based nonprofit agency that has addressed the entire

Compassion Without Borders TOURO COLLEGE GRADUATE SCHOOL OF EDUCATION
Ten Smithtown High School West Students attended the 4th Annual Compassion Without Borders Convention at Brentwood High School on March 13th. The convention centers on the spread of messages including empathy and
sympathy. These students heard inspiring stories of compassion and sympathy from keynote speakers and participated in “breakout sessions” where they learned how they can bring these messages back to their school. These ten students will serve as a
catalyst to start a new wave of compassionate thinking throughout the school. The Bulls Against Bullying Campaign started by DECA and leadership members that attended this convention will continue this fight for compassion.

Senior Class: Better Balance
Falls are the leading cause of injury and deaths among older adults, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Approximately one-third of adults 65 and over fall at least once a year, and many who sustain injuries stop physical activity for fear of falling. Moving for Better Balance is a modified Tai Chi course offered at the Gurwin Jewish - Fay J. Lindner Residences, located at 50 Hauppauge Road in Commack, by a YMCA of the USA certified instructor. This course helps older adults improve
their balance and reduce their chances of falling. The 12-week session, which meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at the assisted living community in Commack, begins on Tuesday, April 30th. Moving for Better Balance teaches participants balance skills and good body alignment by using coordinated and flowing movements. The course is designed for community-dwelling older adults aged 65 and older, who can walk easily with or without assistive devices. Participants will
feel stronger, have better balance and greater flexibility, and feel more confident after completing the Tai Chi program. This effective program was developed by Fuzhong Li, Ph.D. of the Oregon Research Institute, with funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Space is limited, and registration is required for this free program. For more information, or to register, contact Cheryl Sillberman at 631.715.8268.

Congratulations to Ryan Lanzetta, Kavita Jain, Larissa Barnes, Ryan Scheinberg, Robert Rock and Coach Mary Keegan. We wish them Good Luck at the national finals.
This year’s Sprachfest was another rousing success. Each year, the American Association Teachers of German sponsors Sprachfest, an academic competition and celebration of the German language. This year the event was held at Commack High School. The Smithtown teams collectively won
over 25 ribbons at this year’s competition! One of the highlights was Smithtown High School West’s Culture Bowl Team (Bobby Lewand, Tom Marmann, Zach Renner and John Toscano) beating Chaminade to win first place. Another highlight was Lauren Ehrlich (Great Hollow Middle School) winning the Spelling Bee.
Ryan Deisler (High School West) won first place in the Number Bee. Many other students won a variety of events, making us all very proud. All of our German students had a great time and are looking forward to competing in and celebrating the 25th Anniversary of Sprachfest next year!

Both clubs are modeled on the belief that all students are part of a larger school community and serve as a partnership to break down barriers between students with and without disabilities. The clubs provide a safe outlet for socialization for all Commack students within the school and local community. Best Buddies and Best of Buds create opportunities for one-to-one friendships, and the students are
encouraged to participate in both small and large group social activities with their assigned buddy throughout the school year. Recently the clubs held a campaign to End The R-Word. Students and staff were encouraged to sign a pledge to stop the use of the derogatory word, retard(ed). The entire student body from both schools were invited to help Spread The Word To End The Word, by signing their names to make a commitment to effect a positive change on our school culture. The students were active participants in the Special Olympics, and worked to spread Autism awareness throughout the month of April.

Prepare a deck or patio for entertaining Few things are better than having a functional and beautiful outdoor space to entertain guests. Having a great outdoor space enables a person to host parties or intimate gatherings all year long. Establishing an entertaining space and maintaining that space are essential when planning another year of fun in the sun. There are many things homeowners can do to ensure their entertaining space is safe and functional. As the season approaches, include some landscaping and decorating components to your preparatory plans to make the space as comfortable and aesthetically appealing as possible. Here are a few key tips for readying your yard for entertaining possibilities. Expand on these basics to customize an area for your unique needs. * Check the area for any needed repairs. Prior to your first entertaining session, look over the deck or patio to take note of any flaws that may present safety hazards. Are there any loose railings? Are all screws and nails flush so they do not cause tripping? Are there any cracks in concrete or loose patio blocks? Be sure to remedy all of the repairs needed to ensure guests will be safe. If you are unsure of any structural deficits, consult with a contractor. * Hire a reputable contractor. If you are just laying the groundwork for a new patio or deck, it is important to get the necessary permits and then hire a person who has been properly vetted. Check qualifications and licensing before hiring a contractor and ask to view a portfolio of his or her previous work. Word-of-mouth recommendations from trusted friends and family members are good, and you can also double-check qualifications by contacting the Better Business Bureau to see if any complaints have been lodged or use a service such as Angie’s List to read reviews of his or her work.
for when the sun is too uncomfortable to make sitting outside enjoyable. Similarly, have a sunny area where people can soak up a few rays or dry off after a dip in the spa or pool. Don’t forget to establish a spot for the kids to converge with scaleddown amenities. * Consider a fireplace or fire pit. For centuries man (and woman) has gathered around fire for socialization and a means to warming up. Having a backyard fireplace, pit or chiminea is a conversation-starter, a decorative focal point, and a functional tool to extend the number of seasons in which outdoor entertaining can take place. Place the fire wisely and with concern for safety. It should be out of the way of foot traffic, but central enough so that it can be a gathering point. * Invest in quality outdoor furniture. Today’s yards are extensions of a home’s interior. Guests no longer want to sit on uncomfortable metal or plastic furniture. There are many different outdoor sofas and chairs that are as stylish as they are comfortable. These pieces can be matched to the decor inside your home for a cohesive look. * Accessorize. Consider the creature comforts of indoors and mimic that outdoors. Don’t shy away from hanging artwork on an exterior wall or using urns or pottery to decorate the space. Weather-resistant materials ensure everything from clocks to televisions can be used outdoors. Think about having an entire set of serving dishes and other entertaining items for the outdoors. When refurbishing outdoor entertaining areas, emphasize comfort, safety and functionality.
Did you know?
* Think about closing in a portion of a deck or patio. The use of a canopy, netting or even greenery to protect an entertaining space can help minimize weather-related damage to outdoor furniture. Restoring your property after a long winter One of the best things about the dawn of spring and the return of warmer weather is the chance to get out of the house and get some fresh air. For homeowners, this is the perfect opportunity to assess any damage the previous months did to yards and develop a plan restore properties.
* Employ a pre-emergent weed killer. Homeowners who routinely spend their summers agonizing over weeds throughout the yard should consider applying a pre-emergent weed killer around the beginning of spring. It’s important to do so around the end of March or early April, when the weeds have not yet had a chance to grow. When applying, follow the dosage instructions provided by the product’s manufacturer. Such instructions often recommend a second application right before summer begins.
* Don’t jump the gun. The first warm day of spring might seem like a great time get out in the yard and get your hands dirty. But it’s best to wait until the grass has completely dried out before getting to work. Raking on wet grass increases the risk of tearing out grass, which * Remove thatch. How to edge a lawn Edging a lawn is a springtime rite of passage for many homeowners. When winter has come and gone, many lawns are left in need of some serious maintenance, including edging. Well-defined edges around the yard make the yard look more organized and better maintained. And edging is relatively easy, especially for those homeowners with a smaller yard. Edging can be time-consuming for those with more property, but when done properly, edging is definitely worth the effort. * Remove debris from the areas you plan to edge. Before you even begin to edge, be sure to remove any debris from those areas that need edging. Debris, including rocks, twigs or the kids’ toys, left lying around can be kicked up when you’re edging, potentially causing injury to you or someone standing nearby. * Purchase safety goggles. Even if you have removed all visible debris, there still may be some items hidden in the grass. These items can be kicked up and hit you in the eye, so purchase some safety goggles and be sure to wear them whenever you’re edging. As an added precaution, keep kids and others away from any areas you’re edging so they aren’t injured by any unseen debris that
gets kicked up while you’re working. * Check your tools. Edging can be done by using a gas-powered edger or a string trimmer. Before you begin to edge, inspect these tools to ensure they’re capable of handling the task at hand. Inspect the blades on a gas-powered edger to make sure they haven’t dulled since their most recent use. If they are dull, sharpen them before you start to edge. When using a string trimmer, make sure you have enough string on hand to complete the project. String trimmers use a particular kind of string, so visit your local lawn care or hardware store if you don’t feel like you have enough. * Position your edger properly. Once you have given your tools the green light, it’s time to start edging. When you begin, make sure the edger is between the sidewalk or driveway and the edge of the lawn, placing the wheel of the edger on the sidewalk or driveway and then pushing and pulling the edger until you have created a clear edge. If you have never edged before, you may want to practice on smaller, more isolated areas until you become comfortable operating the edger.

The College was also recognized with a Silver Paragon Award for the same print advertising campaign by the National Council for Marketing and Public Relations (NCMPR), an affiliate of the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC). Being Domestic you actually come to the point in life when you must learn to do all of these necessary things for yourself – you know, just in case the maid calls in sick one day – it’s really not as hard as it looks. A little reading comprehension, a touch of common sense and lots of advice from Mom & Dad… with some trial and error, most things turn out just fine. That’s not to say I haven’t let a pot or two of water boil a little too ferociously, or had a couple of things get a bit too well done in the oven. But rest assured, no fire departments had to be called in the making of my culinary creations. A small victory. Now if I could only get that fuzzy sweater to be fuzzy again…
Suffolk County Legislator Lynne C. Nowick invited Smithtown High School East Intel finalist Michael Zhang and semifinalist Nicholas Spiezo and Smithtown High School West semifinalists Kavita Jain and Prady Manepalli to the general meeting of the Legislature to be
honored for their scientific accomplishments. The Intel Science Talent Search is America’s oldest and most prestigious pre-college science competition in the nation. Legislator Nowick said, “I admire these students for their pursuit of science at such a young age and for their hard work and
diligence. I also commend their science teachers and administrators for the support they have provided to these youngsters.” “Their parents should also be congratulated for their encouragement and assistance,” Legislator Nowick added.

I am not a domestic person by nature. Or, at least, I never thought I was. The whole cooking, cleaning, doing laundry thing just seemed so… boring and tedious. I never wanted to learn, promising my mom that, once the time came for me to move out on my own, I would simply hire a gourmet chef and a maid. Voilá! Problem solved. Right. Well, back in the real world, while the prospect of cooking for myself seemed slightly intriguing, I always had visions of water boiling over onto the stove, clouds of smoke billowing out of the oven…that sort of thing. Laundry was another issue.
Too many compartments, dials, buttons… lights, whites, darks… bleach, fabric softener, water temperatures, load sizes… delicate cycles, special washing and drying instructions… Wouldn’t it be easier to just take everything to the dry cleaners and have them sort it out? Sure, minus the $500 weekly bill maybe. Being a bit of a neat freak – okay, maybe slightly OCD – I’ve actually always enjoyed the vacuuming and dusting part of things, organizing, categorizing... all that fun stuff. Everything but cleaning the windows. I seem to have a small issue with – how would you put it – not making them look even worse than before I touched them. Well, as it turns out, when

Fairy Tale Ball
Accompsett Elementary second graders recently performed at their Fairy Tale Ball. The Ball, which has become a much anticipated annual celebration, is the culminating activity to their educational journey through the fairy tale genre. In the past few weeks the second graders
have immersed themselves in fairy tales and the unique elements that define this magical genre. The students compared and contrasted various Cinderella stories from around the world and recorded information from their travels in their very own passports. At the Fairy Tale Ball,
the children were excited to share their knowledge with their families as they: waltzed, chanted, sang, gave speeches and performed various Readers Theatre presentations, while dressed-up in enchanting costumes. A “happily-ever-after” time was had by all.
