Constitution Celebration

LINDY’S TAXI

appy Birthday to the U.S. Constitution! Although Constitution Day is actually September 17th, the celebration at Mills Pond Elementary began on Tuesday, September 11th. Facts about the Constitution and Bill of Rights were shared by 5th graders on the morning announcements. The science room was decorated, and it became the official “signing room” for all class constitutions. Pictured: Using quill pens, two students add their signatures.

The Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America will hold their fall walk on Sunday, October 14th at 12 noon at Stony Brook University in Stony Brook. Many patients feel that they are alone in their struggle with IBD, not knowing how to explain to others what they go through. Take Steps provides the perfect environment for patients and their families to come together and know they are not alone in this fight. The afternoon is filled with music, food, kids’ activities, local entertainment and most importantly the company of hundreds of people who truly understand the impacts of IBD. Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are painful, medically incurable illnesses that attack the digestive

system. Crohn's disease may attack anywhere along the digestive track, while ulcerative colitis inflames only the large intestine (colon). Symptoms may include abdominal pain, persistent diarrhea, rectal bleeding, fever, weight loss and fatigue. Many patients require hospitalization and surgery. Most people develop the diseases between the ages of 15 and 35; however the incidence is increasing in young people. Take Steps is the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America’s national walk program to raise money for critical research and awareness about these painful and unpredictable digestive diseases. Thousands of people will gather this spring and fall at 158 walk sites across the country to join the fight

hundred years. Young and old were treated to over 30 gallons of donated ice cream from The Hershey’s Creamery Corporation, as well as the hometown grocery store, King Kullen. Further generosity came from the many merchants and service providers who generously donated for the auctions and raffles. Disney land passes, Spa Days at T.Carlton, & Cactus Spas, baskets for every interest and taste all made for an interesting and fun filled night. On hand to assist with the ice cream scooping were Legislator John M. Kennedy Jr. and members of his staff, and the members of the

Commerdinger Society. Children were treated to cart rides, as well as face painting. It turned out to be a great time for over 500 local residents, and all agreed that they are looking forward to an even bigger event next year. Finally, a big thanks the Cleary School for the Deaf. These gracious school administrators opened their doors and came through for a good cause in a big way as the host for this event! All efforts led to a whopping $5,600 raised for the charitable and preservation efforts of the Society. Look for an ambitious educational and preservation schedule in 2013.

Michael’s wife Dee Downing Schaffield, and his son, Brian Schaffield, accepted the 2012 Humanitarian Award on behalf of Michael, whose leadership and dedication to LICADD supported the organization to meet its mission. “The support of our event chairs, Michael Brennan and Jeffery Capazzi, and the generosity of our donors and volunteers at this event means so much to us, as the proceeds of the tournament will directly fund programs that provide hope and healing to at-risk individuals and the families that support them,” explained Executive Director Dr. Jeffrey Reynolds. “It is because of their efforts that LICADD remains the go-to agency in the midst of this public health epidemic and continues to develop effective and innovative programs to combat addiction.” Do you know someone who may be at risk for alcohol and drug abuse? The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) held its 32nd Annual R. Brinkley Smithers Golf Invitational yesterday and brought in $360,000 to support its life-saving substance abuse prevention programs and comprehensive addiction services. More than 175 golfers teed-off at The Creek and Piping Rock Clubs in Locust Valley and 200 dinner guests gathered in support of LICADD. Father Philip K. Eichner, SM, President of Kellenberg Memorial High School, led the invocation that began the Diamonds in the Rough Reception and Dinner at The Creek. He spoke of the critical needs of youth and families on Long Island and the services that LICADD offers to address the growing crisis of abuse, addiction and drug-related fatalities in our communities. LICADD Board Chair Jeffery Capazzi explained the appeal of the R. Brinkley Smithers Golf Invitational, “it is wonderful to be involved in organizing this event, especially when the need for proven drug and alcohol support is so evident and continues to escalate each year.” Former Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi, who served as event emcee and auctioneer, helped to energize the

The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) has long been at the forefront of providing alcohol and drug education and treatment referrals and addiction services to individuals. Now, the Long Islandbased non-profit will offer an additional resource to families who are dealing with the loss of a loved one due to addiction in the form of new Grief and Loss Support Groups in both Nassau and Suffolk. The Grief and Loss Support Groups will start this Saturday, September 29th and meet weekly from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in LICADD’s Mineola (114 Old Country Road, Suite 114) and Ronkonkoma (2805 Veterans Memorial Highway, Suite 26) offices. Participants will have an opportunity to connect with others, while receiving the skills and support necessary to

understand and move through the grieving process. “Losing an addicted child, sibling, parent, spouse or any family member to an overdose, car crash, or in any other way is extremely traumatic; a life is lost and in its place are often feelings of guilt, anger and grief,” explained LICADD Clinical Director Steven Chassman, LCSW. “We want anyone experiencing such a loss to know that they are not alone and that healing is possible,” he added. Every 19 minutes, one American dies of an accidental overdose. “Those figures are reflected on Long Island, and our communities have been devastated by this senseless loss of life,” said Dr. Jeffrey L. Reynolds, LICADD’s Executive Director. “We are working hard to prevent fatal overdoses

Speaking Of Siri

By: Jamie Lynn Ryan A few weeks ago, my friend and I got the bright inspiration to walk all the way to Kismet from the Fire Island Lighthouse. I had been told it wasn’t an extremely long journey, and, timed just right in the early fall, would be quite lovely and scenic. Well, it was certainly scenic. Considering that there is basically one route from the Lighthouse leading into the Fire Island communities, one would think there would be no need for directions. But, just for kicks, I decided to put the address of the restaurant we planned to go to – Surf’s Out – into my phone and ask the famous Siri for directions. Immediately, my trusty little map dropped a pin at our current location, as well as another quite some distance away. At first glance, it seemed rather far, but we paid no mind. We just started walking. Pretty soon, we saw the sign telling us we were entering Kismet Village. Okay, we were on the right track. My friend thought she remem-

bered that there was a particular cross street we would need to make a left turn on, in order to head north to the Bay side of the Island, where the restaurants were located. Not quite certain which road it was, we figured surely there would be a sign. Oh, there was a sign all right! The next marker we came across welcomed us to the Village of Saltaire – in other words, we were now exiting Kismet. Hmmm… interesting. And yet there remained the little glowing dot on my phone, still way off in the distance. Something was very wrong. As I zoomed in further, I started to faintly make out the words “Ocean Beach” stamped on the map. Ocean Beach?! As in that town I had not too long ago take a ferry to?! I didn’t even know you could walk there if you wanted to! And who in their right mind would want to? Uh-oh, we were seriously off track. At that point, short of knocking on a local resident’s door – many of whom had already packed it in for the season – the only other

passers-by consisted of bicyclists zooming by – and deer…lots of deer, galloping across the street, darting from one yard to the other presumably in search of something to munch on. Ah, but then, out of the blue came an older couple, clearly local residents out for a leisurely afternoon stroll. “Excuse me, but can you tell us if there is a restaurant near here?” my friend inquired. “Oh yes,” the man said. Oh good, I thought. “But not here…” Uhoh. “It’s way back in Kismet,” he gestured in the direction from which we had just come. Oh boy. “How far, exactly?” “Oh, it’s a good hike,” his wife said apologetically. We politely thanked them and began the long process of retracing our steps, finally arriving at our intended destination – approximately 3.5 miles and 1 hour and 20 minutes after departing. All for the experience of walking to Kismet. It was an experience all right. Suffice it to say, Siri will not be invited on our next journey.

Celebrating Constitution Day

Happy Birthday to the U.S. Constitution! Although Constitution Day is actually September 17th, the celebration at Mills Pond Elementary began on Tuesday, September 11th. Facts about the United States Constitution and Bill of Rights were shared by fifth graders on the morning announcements.

In class, students learned about our government. Each class developed a set of rules and responsibilities for a successful school year as students discussed the history of the writing and signing of the U.S. Constitution. The science room was decorated. It became the official “signing room” for

all class constitutions. Using quill pens, students added their signatures to the documents written with the help of their teachers. Constitutions are now proudly displayed in classrooms as reminders to be good citizens throughout the year.

Gnomes For The Gym

Harbor Country Day School announces a Gnomes for the Gym Benefit Auction to be held on October 19th at Lombardi’s on the Sound in Port Jefferson. The benefit will feature 25 garden Gnomes and nearly three dozen Toadstools imaginatively created by Long Island artisans for auction. Proceeds from the auction will fund a renovation of Harbor’s gym planned for

winter 2012-2013. The event is the brainchild of Harbor Board of Trustees member Adrienne Owen, who is serving as the Event Chair. “Gnomes are enchanted woodland folk and since Harbor Country Day is nestled in the woods of Head of the Harbor, who better to help renovate Harbor’s gym than a troupe of gnomes,” said Mrs. Owen. The Harbor Gnomes and Toadstools, which are all original and unique in design, are being crafted in fiberglass and measure twenty-nine and eleven inches tall, respectively. Before being considered for participation, artists submitted written proposals and design templates along with portfolio samples to a

selection committee. Larissa Grass, Harbor Country Day School’s Artist in Residence, “One of my most cherished artistic philosophies is to help my community in any way I can using my talents as an artist. It is a philosophy I share with my students at Harbor, and the Gnomes for the Gym project was a perfect opportunity to illustrate that important philosophy with the children. It is so lovely that there were so many unique and talented artist who were eager to create for a charitable cause. The collection of gnomes and toadstools we will be auctioning off are quite amazing and I am eager to see them enjoyed by others.”

Athlete Of The Week

Commack High School senior Paul Maline was named a News 12 Long Island Scholar Athlete for the 2012-2013 season. The weekly award recognizes outstanding ability shown by high school seniors in athletics, scholarship, leadership and service to others. Nominations are sent in by coaches from all across Long Island. A segment featuring the weekly winner is taped at the student’s high school and airs on the News 12 Long Island broadcast and

is posted online: www.news12.com/sportsc entral<http://www.news12 .com/sportscentral>. The school receives a plaque to document this achievement. News 12 Long Island and sponsor Capital One Bank will honor each winner, their parents, coach and athletic director at the year-end award dinner in June. Each Scholar Athlete winner will be presented with a $1,000 scholarship. To be considered for this

honor, an athlete must have an unweighted academic average of 90 or better, SAT scores of 1950 or higher or ACT scores of 31 or higher, plus outstanding participation in two or more sports or a multi-season sport, and examples of leadership and service to others. All winners have to demonstrate the ability to get along with others, leadership skills, modesty, and sportsmanship.

Local Scouts Honored

Eight Boy Scouts of Troop 343 were among the 203 Catholic Scouts from Theodore Roosevelt Council and the Suffolk County Council Boy Scouts of America who were presented with their Catholic Scout Religious Emblems from the Reverend Gerard Gentleman, Diocesan Scouting Chaplain of the Diocese of Rockville Centre in St. Agnes Cathedral during the 55h

Annual Scout Convocation in St. Agnes Cathedral on September 16th. Among the 57 Boy Scouts who earned their Pope Pius XII Emblem and the 146 who had earned their Ad Alteri Dei Catholic Emblems, Troop 343 (Hauppauge) scouts pose for a photo in front of St. Agnes Cathedral after they had been presented with their emblems: (left to right, front row) Boy

Scout Troop 343’s Ad Altare Dei recipients Nicholas Sicurelli and Christopher Burns and (back row) Pope Pius XII recipients: Matthew Fortmeyer, Liam Nugent, Dennis Collins, John Carrature, and Ralph Plotke. Vigil Honors

During the Order of the Arrow’s ceremonial work weekend on June 15th17th held at Baiting Hollow Scout Camp in Wading River, The Shinnecock Lodge inducted 74 new members and also recognized Scouts and Scouters for their service and commitments to Scouting in its various forms. Fourteen O.A. Brothers sealed their membership in the Order of the Arrow by receiving their Brotherhood Membership during this Ordeal Weekend’s ceremonies. While induction into the Brotherhood of the Order of the Arrow is both voluntary and a personal choice, the Vigil Honor Award is the highest award that a Lodge can give, and

the recipient is chosen by the youth members of the O.A. OA members, both adults and youths, can be recognized as worthy to be honored with this award. The Vigil Honor cannot be earned. You have to be chosen by your peers to receive it. The greatest honor that can be conferred on a member of the Order of the Arrow is the recognition of his unselfish service to the Order of the Arrow, to Scouting, to a Scout Camp, or to an O.A. Lodge. An extremely prestigious award, those honored with the Order of the Arrow Vigil Honor are chosen annually by the youth members of county-wide Shinnecock Lodge of the Suffolk County Council, Boy Scouts of America.

A person must be a Brotherhood member for two years before he can be considered eligible for the Vigil Honor. This honors those who go above and beyond the call of service in scouting and the community. The Vigil Honor is easily recognized by a triangle having been placed in the middle of the arrow’s stem on the red and white OA sash. The first Vigil Honor was awarded in 1915 to the founder of the O.A., E. Urner Goodman.
